    >>> Is the Clean Hong Kong campaign(运动)working?
    LittleBug 88:
My dad had to pay a $1500 fine today for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground. An officer caught him and gave him a ticket. That’s just bad!
    MsNeat99:
Littering is against the law. If you break that law, you’re a “littler bug”, and have to pay the fine. You bring that onto yourself! The law is there to deter people from littering and to keep our environment clean.
    LittleBug 88:
Well, I’m against this whole Clean Hong Kong campaign as it just doesn’t work! There’s still litter everywhere!
    TidyBunny:
What’s the Clean Hong Kong campaign?
    MsNeat99:
The government started it to make Hong Kong cleaner. It’s now illegal to litter or spit in public places. The campaign includes posters and television advertisements to educate people about the law and encourage them to keep Hong Kong clean.
    TidyBunny:
I think the campaign is a great idea. I always pick up after myself and try to keep all public places clean.
    MsNeat99:
I really support this campaign too. It’s important to keep our public spaces clean, otherwise diseases can spread quickly, and we can get very sick.
    LittleBug 88:
I know a clean environment is important, but the campaign just isn’t effective. After all, people still litter and spit in public spaces.
    TidyBunny:
If you aren’t worried about the fine, then you’ll litter. But as long as some people are worried about the fine, they won’t litter. The fine works if it prevents some people from making public spaces dirty.
    MsNeat99:
I agree! The campaign works if it helps keep public spaces cleaner. Hong Kong would be much dirtier without the campaign!
    TidyBunny:
People need to know it’s important to keep Hong Kong clean.
    LittleBug88:
But what can I do? I can’t clean up Hong Kong clean!
    TidyBunny:
Everyone needs to do their part. If everyone cleaned up after themselves, the environment would be a lot cleaner.
    LittleBug88:
Yes, but many people still think it’s harmless if they just throw small things on the ground. I’ve seen people drop sweet wrappers on the ground when they tink no one is looking.
    MsNeat99:
We need to be aware that small things add up to big things when many people do it! Keeping public spaces clean benefits everyone.
    TidyBunny:
Maybe the fine will help some people see that littering or spitting isn’t so harmless!
    LittleBug88:
It’s helped my dad to see that. He will definitely think twice before littering again. A $1500 fine isn’t harmless!

Ghina Ghaliya of Indonesia says a stranger’s visit to her house led to a charity to help students influenced by the COVID-19. Ghaliya remembers when a rubbish collector came to her house in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. The man asked if she had an old mobile phone that his children could use to get on the Internet. Even ugly phones were okay.
“He said it does not matter if it is an ugly one, as long as his children can use it for learning from home,” she said. “I thought there must be many people who need second-hand mobile phones out there.”
Ghaliya works for a national newspaper. Shortly after the COVID-19 hit Jakarta, she and 11 other journalists organized a group to provide food and money for poor people. They started hearing from parents who wanted their children to study online but lacked(缺乏)a way to use the Internet. Ghaliya thought of her meeting with the rubbish collector when she and her group decided to provide mobile phones to poor students.
Many of these children were not able to do face-to-face learning when the new school year started in July. When the journalists announced their charity through social media, the reaction(反应)was overwhelming. Many people donated second-hand phones, while others gave cash donations. As of November, the journalists had collected more than 200 mobile phones and donations of more than $35,000. They used the money to buy more phones. They also paid for Internet use for those needing it.
Qayran Ruby Al Maghribi had also been using his father’s mobile phone to attend three video calls a week with his teachers and get homework. But the 11-year-old boy sometimes sent his homework late because he had to wait for his father to return from work in order to get back online, which made him upset. But a big smile appeared on his face when he received the mobile phone sent by Ghaliya’s group. “I will use the phone to do online school every day,” Maghribi said.

Raising money for your favorite charity sounds like a great idea. It can be a lot of fun to hold events for charities, but it can also be a lot of work, too.
Pick a charity. The best way to pick a charity is to find a cause. If you love books, raise money for the library. Charge a small entry fee(the part that raises money)to the event, and get people in the community to organize small games, where the money goes back to the charity. If you can, get a band to play popular music, and try to have food on band for sale. You may also be able to get some businessmen to donate food so that more people will come.
Have a competition. You can hold a competition for anything. Get someone to donate prizes, and have each person pay an entry fee. This event can raise even more money if you get the rich here.

Charity walk for children in poor areas
Last week our school organized a charity walk to raise money for children in poor areas. We wanted to use the money we raised to buy some books for the children in poor areas so that they could get more knowledge.
At 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, we got together at the school gate, and then we walked to Water Park. Before we set off, we (had) planned everything well. For example, we divided all the students into four groups. After walking a difficult long way, some of us felt a bit awful. However, we helped each other during the whole campaign. In the end, we raised 50,000 yuan with the help of thousands of kind-hearted people.
After the campaign, although we all felt very tired, we were very happy. On the one hand, the campaign is a meaningful experience for us, and on the other hand, it makes us realize how important the teamwork is.
