UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Latin America
Below are some of the best UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Latin America. There are currently many sites listed, so narrowing this list down to only 5 was quite the task.
    ² Chichen Itza, Mexico
The centre of pilgrimage for more than 1,000 years and previously the Yucatán’s most powerful city, the Mayans really did us a favour by creating Chichen Itza. One of the greatest places to visit in Mexico, there’s still so much to enjoy here from ancient carvings in the structures to sound and light shows in the evenings. Highlighted by El Castillo, the striking 30-meter step pyramid makes Chichen Itza stand out among Mexico’s best ruins.
    ² Easter Island, Chile
This remote Polynesian island is famed for its 887 surviving monumental statues. With monuments dating back to the 10th century, the landscape is unlike any other you’ll ever see.
    ² Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
The former Guatemalan capital is an amazingly well-preserved colonial city known for its colonial church ruins and Spanish Baroque architecture. In 1773, the earthquake-prone area was majorly damaged by an earthquake, which led to its main structures being preserved as ruins and the capital being moved to Guatemala City.
    ² Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
While Rio is known for many things, its carioca landscapes definitely take the cake. The landscapes comprise major natural elements that have moulded the development of the city and stretch from the top of Tijuca National Park’s highest peak at 1,021 meters down to the sea. Some of its key sites are the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, hills around Guanabara Bay, and the renowned Christ the Redeemer statue.
² Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina
Highlighting the list of the most beautiful places in the world, glacial lakes and rugged mountains are only the beginning of one of South America’s best parks. With ⅓ of the park being covered in ice, the glaciers are some of the most accessible in the world. Wildlife viewing, hiking, and climbing are super popular here along with helicopter rides over the park.

Held every year on 21 May, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrates culture and highlights its diversity as a symbol of inclusion and positive change. Today, we invite Nita Llonçari and Baktygul Rakymbaeva to talk about their favourite cultural heritages.
    Nita Llonçari, Kosovo
Cinema ‘Lumbardhi’ in Prizren is one of my favourite sites. It’s a great representation of national culture because it goes beyond the usual definition of material heritage. The Cinema has not become a monument due to its astonishing architecture or its very old age, but because of its genuine value to the people of Kosovo.
Cultural monuments in their most basic form can teach us about why we live the way we live. Every decision taken about a monument - how it was built, why it was built, how it is protected - has an idea behind it, whether it is their protection, destruction, restoration or reinterpretation. When we look at a monument, we learn about the power heritage has to alter societies. That’s the reason we should not allow our past to be erased. Otherwise, we risk history falling into oblivion.
    Baktygul Rakymbaeva, Kyrgyzstan
‘Manas’ is one of the finest narratives and an encyclopaedia of the Kyrgyz people’s life and fight for independence, statehood, culture, life-style, education and all other aspects of their life. Counting up to 937,000 lines of sentences, the oral epic has been included in UNESCO's list of masterpieces of cultural heritages of humanity. ‘Manas’ has also been considered for World Guinness Records as the World’s Biggest Epic.
The epic has travelled through more than 1,000 years by word of mouth depicting the Kyrgyz hero Manas, his wife Kanykei, their relatives, family and their efforts to build the strong and independent Kyrgyz state. Manaschy have taken on the responsibility to pass the epic of ‘Manas’ to the next generation.

Norwegians would perhaps highlight their custom of “gå på tur” – going on a journey on foot or on skis. In Denmark, everyone knows what “hygge” is – to freely enjoy the good life with the people you love. They’re the issues of “intangible cultural heritage”, things that cannot be physically touched such as traditions, stories, music, dance, and craft skills.
In 2003, Unesco, the education, science and culture organization of the United Nations (UN), adopted an agreement to “preserve the intangible”, and many developing-world countries were quick to get their traditions included on the official list. But it would take almost 10 years for “Agreement for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” to be approved by the Scandinavian countries.
Annika Sjöberg is responsible for managing the work of the agency in Sweden. She has been, and continues to be, flooded with suggestions of intangible cultural heritage worthy of protection, submitted by committed citizens and organizations wanting to see their particular traditions included on the list that should be ready sometime in the next couple of years.
Suggestions have also been received concerning various maritime traditions: old shipwright skills such as the building of wooden hulled vessels, are in decline and at risk of being lost forever.
“Our work has attracted considerable attention as it is regarded as being a little out in left field,” says Sjöberg. “In addition, it’s also opened people’s eyes to the fact that the things we can’t physically touch indeed have a major bearing on the way in which we live. Even in an urbanized society, there is knowledge we carry with us that we’ve inherited from previous generations – knowledge that’s important to preserve and take care of.”
Sjöberg explains that the point is not to preserve this cultural heritage in a stony, rigid form, as traditions must be allowed to change and evolve. She also emphasizes that her work should not be interpreted as a nationalistic project, rather as a means of multicultural spreading.
It’s actually a matter of documenting the knowledge that exists in the various traditions. What is most exciting is the diversity that now exists and the ways in which different cultures interact with each other.

19版译林选必三Unit 4 Protecting our heritage sites
We often hear about the importance of cultural heritage. But what is cultural heritage and why is it important?
First of all, let’s have a look at the meaning of the words. “Heritage” is a property, something that is inherited, passed down from previous generations. In the case of “cultural heritage,” the heritage doesn’t consist of money or property, but of culture, values and traditions. Cultural heritage implies a shared bond, our belonging to a community. It represents our history and our identity; our bond to the past, to our present, and the future.
Cultural heritage often brings to mind artifacts (paintings, drawings, prints, mosaics, sculptures), historical monuments and buildings, as well as archaeological sites. But the concept of cultural heritage is even wider than that, and has gradually grown to include all evidence of human creativity and expression: photographs, documents, books and manuscripts, and instruments, etc. either as individual objects or as collections. Today, towns, underwater heritage, and the natural environment are also considered part of cultural heritage since communities identify themselves with the natural landscape.
Moreover, cultural heritage is not only limited to material objects that we can see and touch. It also consists of immaterial elements: traditions, oral history, performing arts, social practices, traditional craftsmanship, representations, rituals, knowledge and skills transmitted from generation to generation within a community.
But cultural heritage is not just a set of cultural objects or traditions from the past. It is also the result of a selection process: a process of memory and forgetfulness that characterizes every human society constantly engaged in choosing — for both cultural and political reasons — what is worthy of being preserved for future generations and what is not.
All peoples make their contribution to the culture of the world. That’s why it’s important to respect and safeguard all cultural heritage, through national laws and international treaties. Illicit trafficking of artifacts and cultural objects, pillaging of archaeological sites, and destruction of historical buildings and monuments cause irreparable damage to the cultural heritage of a country. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), founded in 1946, has adopted international conventions on the protection of cultural heritage, to foster intercultural understanding while stressing the importance of international cooperation.

    Dear Susan,
I’m sorry to say that I cannot attend the Chinese paper-cutting show in the Folk Art Museum on Sunday morning as I promised. I’m writing to express my sincere apology to you.
The reason why I will not be available is that my uncle is coming from American on Sunday morning. So my family are going to the airport to meet him, then we will have a family dinner together. I think we can enjoy the show on Sunday afternoon if it is convenient to you. I hope this change will not bring you too much trouble.
I’ m looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Unit 4 Protecting our heritage sites录音文字稿
    Text 1
W: Is your watch made in Tokyo?
M: It is made in Shanghai.
    Text 2
W: There is something wrong with my cell phone. Could you lend me yours?
M: I want to, but my sister is using it.
    Text 3
M: What’s the matter, Anne? Do you have a problem?
W: Yes, I have a chance to get a job in the NTC company and I don’t know what to do.
M: Do take it because it’s a better job than your present one.
    Text 4
M: Would you like to go with me to the new bookstore tomorrow morning?
W: I’d love to. But only if we go there by bike rather than by bus or by taxi.
M: No problem. We can use Mobike.
    Text 5
W:Mike is good at tennis, isn’t he?
M: Yes. But speaking of tennis, Steven is the best in our school.
W: I don’t think so. David is the best in my mind because he had won many prizes in tennis matches.
    Text 6
M: Betty! Betty! Could you please turn off the radio? I hate to have to say this, but it’s too noisy here. I’m reading my books and I’m preparing for my English exam tomorrow.
W: I’m not listening to the radio. The noise comes from our neighbor downstairs.
M: Oh! How terrible! I’ll talk to them and let them be quiet.
    Text 7
    M: What are you reading?
W: Oh, it’s San Chong Men written by Han Han.
M: San Chong Men? I’ve heard of that book. It’s said to be a huge success among young readers.
W: Yes, indeed. This is the third time that I have read it.
M: It sounds interesting. I must read it one day.
W: It’s certainly worth reading. I’m going to the bookshop to look for more of his works tomorrow. Would you like to come with me to buy one?
M: Yes, I’d like to. I can read it on the train to Beijing the day after tomorrow.
    Text 8
M: Hello, Mona, this is Peter.
W: Hi, Peter. What can I do for you?
M: I need directions on how to get to the football stadium.
W: Oh, it’s easy to find. First, go south on Highway 18 for 5 miles until you come to a large KFC. Turn left at the KFC and continue for a few miles more and you will come to the stadium. There are plenty of signs once you pass the KFC and they will take you right to the stadium.
M: Do you think the stadium will be very crowded?
W: Well, the radio announced the tickets for this game had been sold out. That means you should leave about an hour before the game starts.
M: Thank you very much. I’ll take your advice.
    Text 9
W: I told you that the show started at a quarter to nine. Why weren’t you there?
M: Listen, it was not my fault. I wrote it on my calendar, and I didn’t forget to set my alarm.
W: Yeah, it’s never your fault. So, what’s your excuse this time?
M: I saw a man on the side of the road, so I gave him a ride.
W: Well, of course you were late! You were on your way to your daughter’s play and you stopped to pick someone up! What were you thinking?
M: No, I had plenty of time after I dropped him off. But it took almost 40 minutes to get to the school. The traffic was really bad.
W: Why didn’t you just come in when you arrived?
    M: They wouldn’t let me in, because I didn’t have a ticket.
W: So, you just went home after that?
M: Yeah. I just came back here and decided to wait for you two so that I could tell you what happened.
    Text 10
M: What does history or heritage mean? Why is it important? Heritage is our music, our food, our traditions. It’s about places, people and histories that are important to you. It’s everywhere. You can touch it, see it, hear it, and speak about it. It’s as old as humankind, and it is also being created all the time. And it means different things to different people. How people value heritage can also change with time. A great example is Edinburgh’s New Town, which is now an internationally known World Heritage Site, but was considered ugly when it was first built.
It helps us to understand who we are and who we are not. What we consider important in our past can help us to feel connected. A community, brought together by a place, a language, or a shared past, might feel closer to each other through their histories. Heritage reflects different viewpoints across cultures and generations. It’s key to local distinctiveness and identity.
