2022·湖北·十堰市高二期末)When drama teacher Chelsie King asked students in her school to come up with a way for her husband to go around the block in his wheelchair with their newborn, they were up for the challenge.

Chelsie’s husband, Jeremy, underwent brain surgery three years ago, and since then it has been difficult for him to keep his balance. “He wanted to be able to safely hold his baby, but there’s just really not a ton of resources out there for disabled parents,” Chelsie said. She works at the Bullis School in Germantown, Maryland, and asked her colleague Matt Zigler, who teaches the “Making for Social Good” class, for assistance.

In this course, students learn and design products to help people. The 10 high school students were excited to come up with something that could attach to the wheelchair Jeremy uses. They spoke with the Kings about their needs, conducted research on infant car seats and how they are installed, and then drafted 3D models of their designs. “I really feel the students took all my concerns to heart when creating the prototypes(原型),” Jeremy said. Two projects were selected for the students to make—one that connected an infant car seat to Jeremy’s wheelchair and another that attaches an entire stroller(折叠婴儿车)to the wheelchair.

When they were done making the attachments, the students put the instructions online to help even more people. A few weeks later, the Kings went out with the car seat attachment, and found it worked perfectly. The students were excited to learn that their creation was a hit. “I feel fortunate to have been able to take a class that has allowed me to truly make a difference in someone’s life, ” said Zlotnitsky.

    1. What happened to King’s husband Jeremy?

    A. He had a brain operation.

    B. He could safely hold his baby easily.

    C. He got a job at school in Germantown.

    D. He had to make his wheelchair himself.

    1. Why did high school students speak with the Kings?

    A. To print 3D models of their designs.

    B. To help the Kings fix baby car seats.

    C. To connect something to Jeremy’s wheelchair.

    D. To know about the Kings’ practical requirements.

    1. What can we know about the students from the last paragraph?

    A. Their design was a great success.

    B. They discussed and designed two projects.

    C. They were crazy about wheelchair models.

    D. They taught more people to make car seats online.

2021·甘肃·静宁县第一中学高二期末)There are big cultural differences between the U.S. and the U.K., despite having many similarities. People talk differently, and not just in the accent or the words, but the general meaning.

Americans are very friendly. They will talk to strangers in a store, laugh with someone at a bar, and help their neighbours as necessary. Many expats have reported difficulty in making really close friends like they had in the U.K.. The friendliness is only on the surface.

Many Americans are very family-centered. Family life includes endless school musicals, after-class sports, birthday parties and the like. Many new expats report exhaustion trying to keep up with all the things to do with the kids when they come to the US.

Most Americans have never been abroad. The United States is a huge country. Go and look at a map of the US to get an idea. Many Americans feel they simply haven’t seen enough of their own country to consider travelling abroad to see another country. In addition, many people just don’t get enough holiday time to make it worthwhile travelling abroad, with holiday or “vacation” time often being as low as 7-10 days a year, and sometimes that includes sick days.

Most Americans are proud of Scottish or Irish or German or Italian ancestry, even if it has been centuries since anyone in their family lived abroad. Many Americans like to remember this not because they like the old country but because they like to show that their family came from immigrants who dreamed of a better life in America. By pointing out that fact, many feel they are meeting their ancestors’ wishes and dreams.

Making friends can be daunting. While for some in their 20s, they can reach out to those who are also just starting out and form some lifelong friendships, for some who are older, in their 30s and 40s, with kids and a family, meeting others can be difficult.

    1. Why do most Americans seldom travel abroad?

    AThey have short holiday time.

BThey are short of money for trips.

CThey think it worthless to travel abroad.

DThey like their own country’s scenery better.

    1. Why are most Americans proud of their British ancestry?

    AThey love the old country.

    BThey appreciate British culture.

CThey think their ancestors had made history.

DThey think they’re realizing their ancestors’ dreams.

    1. What does the underlined word “daunting” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    ADiscouraging.     BInteresting.    CSurprising.  DExciting.

2021·江苏·常熟中学高二阶段练习)A search of Chinese social media produces almost no posts on the subject: shutdown-related concerns expressed by Chinese are primarily about the safety of themselves, family and friends; change of lifestyle; boredom and the resulting social conflict due to close and extended interaction time while simultaneously managing work, childcare and household tasks. A review of China's academic literature likewise produces no articles.

This may seem strange. Shouldn't the group-oriented Chinese have more social-distancing anxiety than Americans, not less? To give a little background: Individuals in both Western and Eastern societies have social needs, which we meet in a variety of ways. However, our “go-to” strategies do tend to differ. In the more individualistic West, we love our families, of course, but tend to rely heavily on friendship as well-on elective ties reflecting “who we really are." Beneficial to personal growth, these friendships can develop into “chosen families”.

But these relationships depend on subtle in-person interaction, which, unfortunately, is made difficult by social distancing. Cornell researchers Duyen Nguyen and Susan Fussel have shown that compared with the Chinese, Americans rely more on nonverbal behavioral cues such as head turns, facial expressions and eye contact to support communication.

We can also be more skittish—more likely, for example, to owe a lack of affirmative body language to a lack of interest or involvement. As these sorts of subtle behavioral cues are poorly conveyed by electronic media, Americans now reliant on Zoom or Face Time can find it hard to maintain a sense of connection with others.

In contrast, people in more collective societies like China tend to meet their social needs with given or blood ties-with family or schoolmates, for example. Indeed, the lab run by one of us recently found that Asians can get a sense of closeness from almost any kind of social exchange, including talking about the weather. A sense of connection is thus easily maintained even during long periods of social distancing.

    1. What subject did the author search for on the Chinese social media?

    AChange of lifestyle. BSocial-distancing anxiety.

    CSocial conflicts. DClose interaction time.

    1. Which of the following is true about Westerners?

AThey rely heavily on body language in communication.

BThey stay connected with others easily through Zoom.

CThey value their family members more than friends.

DThey get a sense of closeness from any kind of social exchange.

    1. What is the probable nationality of the author?

    AChinese.      BBritish.     CAmerican.     DJapanese.

    1. What does the passage mainly talk about?

AWhat we can do to solve the shut-down related concerns.

BHow social media influence westerners' communication.

CWhat social distancing reveals about East-West differences.

DHow Chinese meet their social needs in times of social distancing.

2021·福建·北京师范大学泉州附属中学高二期中)Every Chinese-language textbook starts out with the standard phrases for greeting people. But as an American, I always found myself unable to speak freely when it came to ____16____ guests at the door. Just a goodbye would not do, yet that was all I had ever ____17____ the books. So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching ____18____ for words that would smooth over the visitors’ leaving and make them feel they would be ____19____ to come again. In my unease, I often hid behind the skirts of my Chinese husband's kindness.

Then finally, listening to others, I began to pick up the phrases that eased relationships and sent people off not only successfully but also skillfully.

The parting for the Chinese includes a lot of necessary habitual practice. Although as a ____20____ I’m not expected to observe or even know all the rules, I’ve had to learn the expressions of politeness and ____21____ at a leave-taking.

The Chinese feel they are ____22____ to see a guest off to the farthest possible point-down the flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the nearest bus stop. I’ve sometimes waited half an hour or more for my husband to ____23____ from seeing a guest off, ____24____ he’s gone to the bus stop and waited for the next bus to arrive.

That’s all very well, but when I’m the guest being seen off, my polite refusals are always ___25___ . My hostess or host, or both, insist on seeing me down the stairs and well on my way, with my repeating the “Don’t trouble to see me off” at every landing. If I try to go fast to discourage them from following, they are simply out to the discomfort of having to run after me. Better to ____26____ the inevitable.

Besides, that’s going against Chinese ____27___, because haste (doing things quickly) is to be avoided. What do you say when you ___28___ someone? People often say “Go slowly” ____29____ “Farewell”. To the Chinese it means “Take care” or “Watch your ____30____ ”, or some such caution, but translated literally it means “Go slowly”.
