When Allie and Chloe Knuth decided to both attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the twins from Green Bay were excited to share a campus but also determined to have their own distinct experiences and follow their own academic paths.
Four years later-as they graduate together this month-the twins say things worked out even better than they could have expected. UW-Eau Claire's campus is small enough that their lives sometimes overlap(重叠), yet big enough that each of them has had room to stretch and grow as individuals.
“It means a lot to graduate alongside each other and I wouldn't want it any other way,” says Chloe, who will earn her degree in international business and management with certificates in Mandarin Chinese and leadership studies. “Graduating college is a momentous experience and I love that I will be walking with my sister.”
Allie, who will graduate with a degree in biology and a certificate in Chinese language, originally planned to go to UW-Madison. However, as college neared, Allie decided to go to UW-Eau Claire as well, a decision Chloe supported. “I didn't want to be without my twin sister,” Allie says of her decision. “It means a great deal to be graduating with my sister because she has always been there for me.”
They shared some experiences and accomplishments during their college careers. For example, they both completed certificates in Chinese. As Asian Americans, it was important for them to learn more about Chinese language and culture.
Allie and Chloe also are active in the University Honors Program, a program where they were able to explore interesting topics that fell outside their academic program. “This program is not just something to put on my resume; it had a vast positive influence on my college experience,” says Allie. Chloe and Allie contributed a great deal to the Honors program, Dr. Heather Fielding says. They invested time and effort into helping other students, especially new students, to adapt to college and develop a sense of belonging, she says.
4、What did Allie and Chloe Knuth expect in the university?

We all have an idea about the common types of environmental problems. However, light pollution may be a new term to many of us. But, the fact is, it does affect mankind, other living forms and the environment as a whole.
What is light pollution? It presents all forms of misused man-made light. The obvious cause of light pollution is the use of outdoor lighting products improperly. It can be office lighting, car headlights, station lights, streetlights and many more.
Light pollution is harmful to both animals and plants. Upon studies, it is found that obvious effects are observed in the behaviour of nocturnal animals. Needless to mention, bright light at night makes it difficult for these animals to hunt, wander and perform their regular activities. Light pollution is directly or indirectly responsible for causing several diseases. Its effects are related to disturbance in the physical rhythm. It contributes to risks of developing cancerous cells. So, it's nothing less than a threat to human health.
You have already seen the negative effects of light pollution on animals and human health. Apart from this, the actual cost of misused light is about millions of dollars every year. It also leads to the release of greenhouse gases and global warming. After all, fuels are used for producing electricity.
While outdoor lighting and using man-made lighting products are part of our modern lifestyle, some simple ways will surely help in reducing light pollution. For example, while installing outdoor lighting, make sure that they are pointed downwards. Also, use only the required lighting equipment for both home and offices. Believe it or not, many people living in the urban areas cannot view clear sky and stars at night. Let's contribute our part in reducing the pollution.
8、What can we learn about light pollution?
A. It has no effect on plants.
B. It contributes to most cancers.
C. It is a negative fruit of light technology.
D. It affects animals' normal activities in the daytime.
9、How does light pollution affect the climate?
A. It reduces temperatures by days and makes nights warmer.
B. It creates more clouds over parts of the Earth.
C. It stops the release of greenhouse gases.
D. It causes global temperatures to go up.
10、How can we contribute our part in reducing light pollution?
A. Forbidding the use of outdoor lighting.
B. Using clean energy to produce electricity.
C. Not using unnecessary lights at home and offices.
D. Reducing money spent on man-made light in urban areas.
11、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _______.
A. citizens should be forbidden to install outdoor lighting
B. only simple ways can help reduce light pollution
C. there is no clear sky or stars over the urban areas
D. light pollution needs to be dealt with urgently
Do you like the woolly mammoths(毛猛犸象) from the movie Ice Age? Too bad they're extinct? Thanks to recent developments in biotechnology, the stuff of science fiction may soon become a reality through an attractive process called “de-extinction”, which aims to bring the extinct species back. The resurrected(复活的) species are functionally equal to the original extinct species, but they are not exact copies.
There are three primary techniques of de-extinction. One of them is that scientists deliberately select existing species with similar characters to the extinct species to produce later generation. This is a natural method. Another is cloning. A cloned animal is created by obtaining the DNA of the extinct animal. The later generation will be an identical copy of the extinct species. This is only applied to animals that are either endangered or have recently gone extinct, as it requires well-preserved eggs. The third is the newest technique, genetic engineering(基因工程). It uses gene-editing tools to place selected genes from extinct animals in place of those present in its closest living relative.
If we refer to Jurassic Park, resurrecting extinct animals is a terrible idea. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about dinosaurs running wildly, as their DNA has disintegrated over the 65 million years since their extinction. DNA can survive for several million years at best under certain rare conditions, but does that mean we should do that?
De-extinction is more for ecology than for tourism. Ecologist Ben Novak said, “All animals perform critical roles in their ecosystem. Woolly mammoths, for example, were excellent gardeners. Their disappearance was followed by a loss in diversity and the Arctic grassland became a cold, ice field1. If a resurrected animal is always going to be a zoo animal then it shouldn't be brought back. ”
12、Why does the author mention the movie Ice Age?
A. To recall the joy from the movie.
B. To lead the readers into the topic.
C. To attract readers' attention to the movie.
D. To show functions of resurrecting animals.
13、What is mainly discussed about de-extinction in Paragraph 2?
A. Its wide application. B. Its main methods.
C. Its complex procedures. D. Its distinct characteristic.
14、What can replace the underlined word “disintegrated” in Paragraph 3?
A. broken away B. picked up C. fallen apart D. run out
15、What would be the best title for the text?
A. Can we bring extinct animals back? B. Do you like the woolly mammoths?
C. Will dinosaurs be seen in the zoos? D. Should we promote cloning skills?

34、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off," said the teacher to her class. An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kaylaoff, she ran into the house happily.
“How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday.”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours. Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on,” said Kayla's mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Kayla. It is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place.”
Paragraph 1:
At first, Kayla felt disappointed at her parents' plan for the holiday.

Dear fellow students,
Spring is coming! It brings us hope as well as a lot of infectious diseases. Here I appeal to us all to take some measures to protect ourselves from the virus.
First of all, people with cold or flu-like symptoms should wear masks to prevent viruses spreading from person to person. Of course, don’t forget to wash your hands properly before eating or after using the toilet. Regular exercise is also one of the most important ways to help you stay away from catching any disease. If possible, avoid going to crowded public places such as cinemas, shopping malls, Internet bars and etc.
A healthy body results from good healthy habits, so let’s act together to fight against diseases and create a better life!
