(2023·上海·统考一模)Choose the best answer(选择最恰当的答案)
When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents for those he loved. The third Saturday in December Mark said that he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went off on his own while I waited patiently reading a book in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. The clerk rang in his purchases(把他所购物品输入现金出入记录器)as I politely looked the other way. Mark kept within his budget(预算)and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood in the middle of the store holding his basket, tears rolling down his cheeks. His whole body was shaking with his sobs. Then an amazing thing happened. A customer in the store came up to Mark. She knelt down and took him in her arms.
“You would do me the greatest favour if you let me replace(补还)your money,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful present you could ever give me. I only ask that one day you pass it on. One day, when you are grown-up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help this other person, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran to the checkout counter as fast as he could. I think we all enjoyed our gifts that year as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you” to that very kind woman. I would like to tell her that four years later Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the Oakland fire—and he thought of her. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.

(2022春·上海闵行·九年级上海市实验学校西校校考一模)As an English language teacher, I have come into contact with many, many different nationalities. The people I teach English to come from very different backgrounds. I have also been fortunate enough to travel to different countries with my work: The USA, China, France, Austria, Germany and Italy to name just a few. You might think, then, that I would be well prepared for the challenge of meeting different cultures. I think I am quite well prepared, but I have had some interesting and surprising experiences. Here are some of the experiences which have made an impression on me.
Arab culture
When some Saudi Arabian students invited me to their house for a meal, we sat on the floor to eat. When I complimented (赞美) to an Omani students on his smart coat, he offered it to me! It seems that is the expected response in some parts of the Arab world. When I asked a Saudi student when his birthday was, he said he did not know. I kept asking him the same question, thinking he did not understand, but the problem was that they don’t celebrate birthdays in some parts of the Arab world.
Japanese culture
When I was invited for a meal by some Japanese students, I was surprised that I had to take my shoes off before going into the house. I was even more surprised when I had to sing karaoke! I have noticed that when I asked Japanese students questions, they often don’t say anything until they have the answer. The silence is longer than we expect in English culture, where you normally make some kind of noise to show you have understood questions and you are thinking about it.
Chinese culture
We had a group of Chinese teachers here. They made their tea in their cups. Boiling water is added to the same leaves when they wanted another cup of tea. I found this interesting because we make our tea in a teapot, using boiling water. But new leaves or teabags are used every time we want another pot of tea. We drink it black or milk and sugar can be added to the tea.
I don’t think the culture differences I have experienced have brought me any real problems. They just make life interesting.

C.they don’t like answering questions D.they don’t know the English culture
22.There are ________ difference(s) in the way of making tea between the Chinese and the Englishmen.
A.1 B.2 C.3 D.4
23.The world “They” in the last paragraph here refers to ________.
A.the problems B.Chinese teachers C.cultural differences D.the writers classes
24.From the passage we can tell that ________.
A.the writer likes to have dinner with students in their homes and learn from them

A.advertisement B.story book C.novel D.science magazine
(2022春·上海徐汇·九年级统考一模)Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world—or even less if the wing of the plane happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, you are moving so quickly that you do not see the countryside clearly. Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and on: they never want to stop. Is it the great motorways that attract them, or what?
And as for sea travel, here are some words of an old song: “I joined the navy (海军) to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” You name the place in the world like El Dorado, and someone is sure to say “I’ve been there”, meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. By traveling like this, you suspend (终止) all experience.
The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives in the present. For him traveling and arriving is one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes and the whole of his body. In the end, he feels tired. Satisfying sleep will be: the reward of all true travelers.
37.When we are going to another place in a hurry, we ________.
A.get a good view on the way B.make good use of our eyes
C.fail to enjoy views with our heart D.are eager to see everything on the way
38.The underlined phrase “get in your way” in Paragraph 1 means ________.
A.arrive at a place B.develop a particular habit
C.reach a particular state or condition D.block your sights
39.The writer uses the words of an old song to tell us ________.
A.sea travel is a good way of seeing the world
B.joining the navy can help our dreams come true
C.traveling by sea hardly helps us enjoy wonderful views
D.what he gained after joining the navy
40.When we travel at high speeds, “the present” means “nothing” because ________.
A.we change our aims all the time B.we are eager to go to another place
C.we are looking forward to the future life D.we can experience a lot
41.The writer most probably advises us to ________.
A.go hiking(徒步) in the mountain B.travel at a high speed
C.go around the world D.travel by car or train
42.The best title of the passage might be ________.
A.True Traveling B.Traveling And Arriving Is The Same Thing
C.Traveling At A High Speed D.Future History Books

Detective Drake was napping with his feet up on his desk when the phone rang. He yawned(打呵欠) and picked it up. “Hello?” he said. “I’ll take the case. I will depart at once.” Drake took his umbrella, which was suitable for the rain outside, and walked out into the noisy city.
The case
Drake hurried to the police station. “We’ve been getting unfinished math problems in the mail,” the Chief said. “They’re signed ‘Guessss Who?’ Every day the number of letters increases. We keep getting more. They are blocking the mail room.”

When he matched the numbers to the letters of the alphabet, this is what he had: A A E E E H J K K N S T

Have conversations with relatives
Name: Sophia “I like talking to older relatives about what happened when they were younger and the times they lived through. We can learn a lot. Popa(my granda) told me that his great aunt, Mary Whitmore, was the first female Mayor of Ipswich, which was exciting to know.”
What should I ask questions about?
Do the relatives and older people you speak to remember when the astronaut Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon in 1969?
Any interviewing tips?
When talking to people about the history they have lived through, try to ask interesting questions, and listen carefully to their answers. Write notes and questions down before you chat so that you will remember what to say.
Oral History
Do you talk to older people about what life was like when they were young? Perhaps you enjoy finding out what major events, such as the Second World War, were actually like for the people who lived through them? Oral history means listening to these stories and asking questions of the people who remember them.
It is a good idea to make recordings of oral history conversations so that they can be kept and listened to in the future. This can be done with a sound recording device or an app on a smartphone.
As well as historical events that affect a whole country, local events are also important. Examples could include flooding, the construction of new buildings, or a person making a big change or having strong influence on a particular area.
Neal Foster, who creates the popular Horrible Histories Live stage shows, thinks oral history is vital. “Nothing competes with hearing history from people who went through the experience. What makes history fascinating is hearing the same event recalled by different people. That knowledge is priceless,” he says.
