Are you daydreaming about your next big adventure? New Zealand could be just the place for you, as its amazingly beautiful natural scenery and huge choice of activities mean there’s something to suit everyone. Here are our top activities to inspire you!
Hike the Franz Josef Glacier(冰川)
One of the most famous glaciers in the world, the Franz Josef Glacier, is an incredible sight and the perfect way to experience it is a guided hike. The cool, starry, icy landscape is something different and the ever-changing caves(洞穴), tunnels and expanses also offer some amazing photo opportunities.
Meet the Wildlife
Grab a wetsuit and go snorkeling(浮潜)with seals, an unusual way to see the islands from a different point of view. Seals swim in large groups, and are very powerful and graceful in the water, a complete contrast to when you spot them lying lazily on the beach.
Get Your Gandalf on
A New Zealand tour would not be complete without seeing some of the jaw dropping landscapes from the famous Lord of the Rings films. The mountains, fields, forests and plains are on an unbelievable scale and certainly something to remember as you can spot over 100 locations used in the films.
Relax in a Natural Thermal Spa
There’s no better way to ease those aching muscles after a horse ride or glacier hike than a long dip in a naturally occurring pool. And the best part is that they are beautifully warm, heated by the natural heat below the islands. The water often contains minerals from the rocks it passes through as an added benefit to your skin.

In a classroom in rural Kenya’s Rift Valley, a student takes notes alongside her fellow classmates. She wears the same school uniform—a grey skirt and a green sweater. However, she is more than 80 years older than them.
Priscilla Sitienei, who turned 99-years-old on February 11, said she went back to class to set a good example for her great-grandchildren and to start a new career. “I’d like to become a doctor because I used to be a midwife (助产士)” she said, adding that her children were supportive of her decision.
Back in 2003, the government of the East African country began an education campaign to help to pay for the cost of primary schooling, allowing some older members of society who had missed out on education in their younger days to continue their dreams. This has given Sitienei more than an education. She’s also become a film star. She traveled to Paris last year for the first showing of a film about her journey titled “Gogo”, which means “grandmother” in her native Kalenjin language.
Sitienei, who is in her sixth year of primary school, said her aims were far more practical than becoming a movie star. She had the idea when her great-granddaughter dropped out of school after getting pregnant. Sitienei said she jokingly asked great-granddaughter if she had any money remaining on her school fee and she said yes. So Sitienei told her that she’d use it to attend school. She said she had hoped that her great granddaughter would continue with her studies. But when she refused, Sitienei decided to go to school herself.
Sitienci also enjoys other school activities, including physical education classes. “It keeps me fit. I get to jump around, even though not as much as they can do, but I at least move my body. That’s my joy,” she said. Sitienei shares her wide experience and knowledge with the children. Her teachers also use her experience to keep the peace during lessons. Her class teacher, Leonida Talaam, said she uses Sitienei to help control the class. And it works! “When I go outside,”the teacher said “the class remains silent.”
24. How does Priscilla Sitienei differ from her classmates?
A. The learning approach. B. The dressing style.
C. Study efficiency. D. Physical age.
25. The purpose of mentioning Paris in Paragraph 3 is_______.
A. to show the daily routines of a film star.
B. to state Sitienei is really fond of traveling.
C. to indicate effects of the education campaign on Sitienei.
D. to explain the hard work it takes to make dreams come true.
26. Why did Sitienei return to school?
A. To gain knowledge to help her great granddaughter.
B. To set a good example to her fourth generation.
C. To satisfy her children's wishes.
D. To become a movie star.
27. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. How Priscilla Sitienei performed at school.
B. How Priscilla Sitienei enjoyed physical education classes.
C. How Priscilla Sitienei’s class teacher controlled the class with her help.
D. How Priscilla Sitienei shared her experience and knowledge with her fellow classmates.

Stressed at work and feeling your blood pressure rise? People all over the world are told by their doctors to try for a low-sodium (钠) diet to treat high blood pressure or other diseases, but there’s no denying that salt makes food taste good. Fortunately, Japanese researchers at Tokyo’s Meiji University and the manufacturer Kirin have developed high-tech chopsticks that enhance salty tastes, potentially helping those who need to reduce sodium in their diets.
These wired-up chopsticks are actually part of a device that the researchers say can enhance the salty flavor of low-sodium foods. And when they were tested on participants for the first time, results showed that the high-tech chopsticks increase perceived (察觉到) saltiness in foods by about 1.5 times.
According to the research team, the basic principle is that the extra salty flavor is perceived due to extremely weak electric currents conveyed directly into the mouth through the tip of one of the chopsticks. Scientists have apparently been using this kind of weak electricity to play with flavors in the lab for years, but these chopsticks in particular are set to adjust the activity of ions (离子) in sodium chloride (table salt), which enhances salty flavor.
And do these chopsticks work as expected? To verify the effect of the new chopsticks, the researchers conducted an experiment on a total of 36 participants aged 40 to 65, all of whom were eating a low-sodium diet. If nothing else, one thing was clear: participants using the chopsticks tasted more salt than they did without. Results show that they even thought that low-sodium food eaten with the high-tech chopsticks tasted saltier than regular food made with an average amount of sodium, and eaten with normal chopsticks.
The chopsticks aren’t on store shelves quite yet, but with promising results, people around the world who are unhappily devoted to a low-sodium diet might just be excited for any updates to come!
28. What is the main function of the future high-tech chopsticks?
A. To treat blood pressure. B. To test how salty a dish is.
C. To help reduce salt intake. D. To increase the saltiness of food.
29. How do the high-tech chopsticks work?
A. By sending warning information to the brain.
B. By tricking our brains into tasting extra salt.
C. By changing the saltiness of food with electric shocks.
D. By using electricity to transport ions between chopsticks.
30. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Decrease. B. Stimulate. C. Bother. D. Confirm.
31. What is the writer’s attitude toward the future of the chopsticks?
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain. D. Pessimistic.
D
Researchers have found strange deep-sea tubeworms (管虫) 36 miles off the North Carolina coast — an animal that has never been observed before in this area of the Atlantic Ocean.
A team from the DEEP SEARCH program made the find while exploring several recently identified cold gas seeps — openings where hydrocarbon-rich(富含碳氢化合物的) liquid is released from below the seafloor — near Pea Island part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA. They used a remotely operated vehicle known as Jason.
Amanda Demopoulos, a chief scientist on the exploration, said that a tubeworm was seen like a jack-in-the-box (a toy consisting of a box from which a figure suddenly appears) while Jason was handling a piece of rock. “ The initial discovery of the tubeworm was serendipitous,” Demopoulos said in a statement. “We were trying to break off a piece of rock for a collection when the worm appeared seemingly out of nowhere.”
After this initial observation, the team explored another seep in the area, finding more of the tubeworms.
These unusual animals are almost plant-like in appearance. They live in tube-shaped structures that are connected to the seafloor near gas seeps. The tubeworms don't have a digestive system and thus rely on bacteria that live inside them for nutrition. These bacteria change hydrogen sulfide (硫化氢)
— which is harmful to humans and smells like rotten (腐烂的) eggs — released by seeps into organic molecules (分子) that feed the worms.
The tubeworm has been documented in the Gulf of Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, Brazil, West Africa and the Mediterranean, but never in this area of the Atlantic.
The cold seeps the team studied off the North Carolina coast were first identified in 2017 by an autonomous underwater vehicle known as Sentry. They are home to a diverse group of oceanic life— including several types of fish, such as black-bellied rosefish, hammerhead sharks, manta rays and tuna.
32.Which can replace the underlined word“serendipitous” in Paragraph 3?
A. Recognized. B. Accidental. C. Spectacular. D. Frightening.
33. What is the relationship between the worms and the bacteria?
A. The worms eat the bacteria for food.
B. The worms can produce the bacteria
C. The bacteria are harmful to the worms
D. The bacteria provide food for the worms.
34. What have scientists found about the seeps?
A. They are in rocks miles under the seafloor
B. They usually have very high temperatures.
C. They offer habitats for many kinds of animals.
D. They can be found in every ocean except the Atlantic.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The various animals living on the seafloor.
B. The discovery of tubeworms near Pea Island.
C. The use of autonomous underwater equipment.
D. The study on seeps off the North Carolina coast

The Importance of Art in Children’s Development
In recent years, school curricula in the United States have shifted heavily toward common subjects of reading and math. 36 Although some may regard art education as a luxury, simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of children’s development. Here are some developmental benefits of art.
It is good for children’s language development. For very young children, learning art or just talking about it provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes and actions. When children are one year old, parents can do simple activities such as crumpling up paper and calling it a “ball”. At elementary schools, students can use descriptive words to discuss their own creations. 37
It helps children to make better decisions. 38 The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other parts of life. “If they are experimenting and trying new ideas then creativity has a chance to blossom,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about children’s art education.
It improves children’s inventiveness. When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating arts, they develop a sense of inventiveness. 39 “The people that society needs to make it move forward are thinking and inventive people who seek new ways and improvements, not people who can only follow directions,” says Kohl. “Art is a way to encourage people to think and make things better!”
40 A report by Americans for the arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than children who do not participate.
A. But what about the art?
B. It helps children’s school performance.
C. It helps children develop communication skills.
D. And this sense will be very important when they grow up.
E. Art education improves children’s problem-solving skills.
F. The first thing we need to point out is that art is a process, not a product.
G. They can also talk about how they feel when they see different styles of artwork.

Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited(自负的). I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse(排练)for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,”I replied. “I have a bit of a sore(疼痛的)throat.” This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Mrs. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script(手稿). I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal(校长) were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌)sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

A possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes -- not even a
consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I now regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings, “Pride goes before a fall.” and “Practice makes perfect!”

W: Dick, if you can finish your homework before 6:00, I will take you to the cinema.
M: I’m sure I can. But I’d like to go to the park to play football.
W: OK. But you must return home before 8:00.
Text 2
W: Oh, dear. I can’t find my necklace now. I remember I put it in the sitting room.
M: It is in the bedroom. You left it here when our daughter called you to the kitchen.
Text 3
M: Henry had never expected he would be awarded a holiday abroad. That’s awesome.
W: Work hard and you will have the luck. Our boss has always been friendly and generous to hard-working workers.
Text 4
M: Hey, Emily. We’re going to Susie Q’s Restaurant for lunch. Do you want to come along?
W: Sorry, I can’t. I have to type the document for Scott. He’s having a dentist appointment.
Text 5
W: Did you watch that comedy special on TV last night? I don’t think I ever laughed so hard.
M: Don’t even talk to me about it. The only night I really wanted to watch something and we had a power failure in my building.
Text 6
W: Hi, Mike. Do you have any plans for the weekend? I have an extra ticket for the Dawson Trio’s live performance at Capital Stadium. Would you like to join me?
M: I don’t know if I can. My parents are coming to town this weekend, so I need to spend time with them.
W: Well, if they like jazz, they might enjoy the show as well. Why don’t you go to the band’s website and see if there are more tickets available? Their shows often sell out, but you might be lucky.
M: All right, I’ll do that this evening. Thanks for the information.
Text 7
M: Can I help you?
W: Yes. I’d like to move to another room, if possible.
M: Of course. Is there anything wrong with your room, madam?
W: Yes. It faces the street, so it’s pretty noisy.
M: I see. Let me check. Yes, I can move you to a room on the opposite side. That should be much quieter. But there’s no sunshine getting in, so it’s a little dark.
W: OK. And is it a non-smoking room?
M: I’m sorry, but it’s not. All of them are occupied at the moment.
W: That’s too bad. I hate the smell of smoke. But at least it will be quieter.
Text 8
M: Good afternoon. Can I help you with anything?
W: Yeah. Can I look at this ring?
M: Sure. Let me get it out for you. What is your size?
W: I believe I’m a six. But I’m not choosing for myself. My mom’s birthday is coming, and one of my friends suggested I send her some jewelry. She is a seven.
M: I see. Here you go.
W: Do you have any necklace that would go well with this?
M: Actually, we have many to choose from. They are over there.
W: This necklace is a little short. Do you have one that is longer?
M: Yes. Why don’t you try this one on?
W: This one is much better. Can I try on the ring with this necklace?
M: Sure. Here you go.
W: If you don’t mind me asking, how much do they cost?
M: The ring is $1,500. But the necklace ranges from $600 to $3,000, which mainly depends on its quality. Of course its size and length also count.
Text 9
M: Next week, there will be an annual folk festival. A lot of programs will be shown then. Will you come?
W: Er, what programs are there this year?
M: There will be a free art exhibition on Monday. It will be held in the Art School, and I’ve heard that most of the works on the show are painted by the students in our town.
W: Really? I will go and see. Well, what else is on the program?
M: There are several traditional programs every year, such as ballet performance. But it is a little different from that of last year. This year there will be two performances at the theater, the first on Tuesday at 6:00 pm and the second on Thursday at the same time. This program is so popular that the audience need to book the tickets in advance.
W: Oh, I saw it last year. There were so many people at the theater that I could hardly see the dancer. Are there any other particular new programs?
M: Er, yes, there will be a mask party. It will be held on Friday evening. Everyone is welcome, but every participant should be dressed in fancy dress.
W: That’s funny. Where will it be held?
M: It was planned to be held in the piazza (广场), but now it has been changed to the concert hall.
W: Great. I will go. Er, are there any living theaters?
M: Yes, The Little Prince will be held on Wednesday. It is also at the theater. You can go to see it from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm or 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
W: How much will the ticket cost?
M: Well, the ticket costs $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $15 for a family.
W: Excellent. I will go with my family.

M: Hello, this is Principal Johnson with the morning announcements. Our usual reader Timmy is out sick today, so I’m reading in his place. I hope you’ve all had a great start to the week! This Monday has started out warm and sunny, so let’s hope it stays that way. I know we’ve had some strange weather in the last few weeks. We have just one month of school left before summer break, so make sure you’ve turned in all of your homework. The last day to turn in an assignment is Friday, May 20th. The last boys’ baseball game will be held at 6:00 pm this Wednesday. Please show up to support the team! If you’ve had problems using the computers in the library, they should be fixed by Thursday. We’re sorry for any trouble this may have caused. This evening, the girls’ softball team will be playing their last game, and over the weekend, the basketball team is playing McKinney School on Saturday afternoon. That’s it for the morning announcements. I hope everyone has a great Monday!
