Jack London, one of America’s major writers of adventure tales, was born in California in 1876. During his life, London worked at many jobs. His broad life experiences would become the background for his writing.

London loved to read. As a teenager, he spent many hours educating himself at the Oakland, California, public library. He attended college at the University of California at Berkeley, but he stayed for only six months. He thought Berkeley was “not lively enough” and wanted to do something more exciting.

London wrote stories about working people and the hard times they had making a living. He knew their problems first hand. He worked as a sailor, farmer, factory employee, railroad worker, and gold prospector, to name just a few of his many jobs.

London grew up near the waterfront in Oakland. He loved the water. When he was fifteen years old, he bought a small sailboat called a sloop. Later he sailed to Japan on a schooner, which is a much larger sailing boat. Like many people of the time, London caught the Klondike Gold Rush Fever. In 1897, he headed for Alaska. He didn’t find gold, but he discovered something even more valuable. He discovered that people enjoyed listening to the stories he made up with his vivid imagination. London entertained the miners with story after story. Later, using his experiences during the Gold Rush, he created many more colorful stories.

London resolved to live a full, exciting life. He once said, “I would rather be a superb meteor(流星), every atom of me in magnificent(壮丽的) glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.” Each day, he pushed himself. Once London determined that he was going to be a writer, nothing could stop him. His goal was to write at least one thousand words every day. He refused to stop even when he was sick. In eighteen years, the writer published fifty-one books and hundreds of articles. He was the best-selling and highest-paid author of his day. Many people also considered him to be the best writer. White Fang and The Call of the Wild are his most famous stories and are about surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. Readers can enjoy Jack London’s energy and his talent for telling wonderful stories each time they open one of his novels.

What will life in the future be like? Will it be much better than it is now? And what will we be able to do in 10, 20 or 30 years’ time?

Genetic engineering (基因工程) may help us make the perfect human. Babies may grow up to play basketball like Yao Ming or look like Cecilia Cheung. Also, we may be able to bring the dead back to life. Maybe people will be able to meet and talk with their dead family members.

Over the next 20 to 50 years, it will become harder to tell the difference between humans and machines. Perhaps we will be able to make copies of ourselves, so we will appear to be alive long after we are dead. People may be able to find ways of putting the life of a person into a new body.

Nanobots (纳米机器人) will be important. We will use them when we are sick. For example, when we have a stomachache, we will swallow (吞下) a nanobot and it will travel through our stomach, taking a video of whats happening there. The video will help the doctor cure us.

In the future, computers may have their feelings. They may be able to think better than us. We may be more and more interested in computers and the internet, spending all our time in front of computers. Perhaps we will forget our real needs. Perhaps we will become super couch potatoes weighing 250 kg!

    28. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

    A. What genetic engineering is. B. Why we use genetic engineering.

    30. According to the last paragraph, computers may be able to ________.

    31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the story?

    A. We will no longer be interested in our own lives in the future.

    B. Computers and robots will take the place of humans.

    C. Humans may get fatter in the future.

    D. We will no longer need doctors and teachers.

    D

There have been several incidents at concerts and other events in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes(蜂拥). This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede. Indeed, it’s a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape. But crowd-safety experts say there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially fatal outcome.

The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location says Randy I. Atlas, a safety consultant based in Fort Lauderdale. Namely, he advises people to take note of where the nearest exits are. It’s a piece of common-sense advice that Atlas applies not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.

If theres a sudden panic(恐慌) and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, your instinct(本能) may be to fight back and push the opposite way. But that could be a big mistake, Atlas warns. If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk, according to experts: If you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly in a situation where you need all the energy you can gather.

Another potential way to handle the situation is to protect yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for “a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar, a wall, a car or even a lamppost” says Bart Whitaker, an event-management professional.

In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation(窒息)—they are simply crushed to the point they cant breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer-like posture. That could give you some very valuable breathing room, which is a simple pose, but surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving.

On the whole, the best way is to stay away from the crowd and avoid coming along for the ride.

    32. What does the writer think of a stampede?

    A. No one can survive it. B. It’s nothing serious.

    C. It can leave a place in ruins. D. It can become disastrous.

    33. What should we first do for safety in a crowd?

    A. Arriving early at the spot. B. Coming along for fun.

    C. Knowing where to leave most quickly. D. Pushing through the crowd to the middle.

    34. What does Alta advise people to do in case of a big crowd?

    A. Stop feeling panic. B. Go with the flow.

    C. Follow their instinct. D. Gather all their energy.

    35. How can people really avoid a stampede?

    A. Staying away from it.                         B. Standing with both hands raised.

    C. Finding a hard thing for protection.              D. Giving themselves some breathing room.

The story started when the Marches were driving home on a cold winter evening.

It was almost 11:00 pm. They were waiting at a red traffic light when they spotted a middle-aged man walking across the road. He dragged his leg, wrapped up his overcoat and hurried by, looking tired and depressed.

The couple felt a need to give him a hand. Then they pulled over and offered him a lift. The man felt surprised at first but soon he accepted their offer and showed his appreciation.

On the way home, they had a chat. They learned the man called Bill was a security guard of a company, which was on the other side of the city. Every day it would take him about 3 hours to travel there by public transportation and the same time back home. The long trip left him only time for work and sleep. Sometimes if he missed the last bus, just as that day, he would have no time to sleep. He had had a car, but because of several hardships in his family, he had to sell it for money.

The Marches didn’t return until they sent Bill to his home. That might have been the end of the story, but they couldn’t take Bill’s 6-hour daily trip and his hardship off their minds. His experience reminded the couple of their own previous struggles in their early life. Short of money, they counted every coin to cover the cost. In order to support life, they walked to the office in the distance, despite hot or cold. Hopelessness and disappointment clouded their life. This time, they thought the trip with Bill wasn’t over.

    续写要求:
