When I went off to college in the fall of 1991, I was an 18-year-old man whose favorite letters were the ones on the sports sweater. Four years later,I was crazy about the letters of the poet Keats, but one author's penned letters stood out above the rest. You see, my father wrote me one letter per week from the time I left home.
In an age before email, these letters seemed too ordinary. But they arrived. Each week. One after another. Again and again. In snowstorms. On holidays. From foreign countries. They detailed what Dad referred to as "the week that was"—a day-by-day description of my father's life.
In 1995, I graduated from college, like many 22-year old, with plenty of uncertainty. Some of my questions were pretty typical: What was I going to do? Where was I going to live? When was I going to apply for graduate school? But one question was more vital than any other thing.
What would happen to the weekly letters? Would they continue? To my surprise, the letters kept coming, more heartfelt and emotional than before and always on time. I mean, the guy never missed.
As much as I enjoyed my father s weekly letters, I didn't t fully appreciate them all those years when they arrived like clockwork. And I never fully understood why my dad would always ask if I'd received the letter when we spoke.
But now, as I pen my first official letters to my own sons Jackson and Cassius, it all seems clear. Although our boys have yet to leave for college, I have to accept that day will soon come.
Just the idea of their leaving from our home makes me ache with sadness only a parent can know.
So I am writing about "the week that was" with my daily details. With a box of over 500 of Dad's letters nearby and his pen in hand, I write a letter, fighting back the tears. I make it to the end and sign it just as he did. All my love, Dad.
4、What were the letters from the author' s father mainly about?
    A.Daily details. B.Keats' poems.
C.College and family. D.Weather and holidays.
5、What does the underlined word "vital" in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.Professional. B.Interesting. C.Difficult. D.Important.
6、What leads the author to fully understand his father's letters?
A.Entering college. B.Writing to his own sons.
C.Graduating from college. D.Sending his sons to college.
7、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What We Can Learn from Graduate School
B.How I Communicated with My Sons by Letter
C.How I Came to Appreciate My Father's Letters
D.What We Know About Kids After Being Parents
As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置) that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
8、Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?
    A. To reduce pressure on keys. B. To improve accuracy in typing.
    C. To replace the password system. D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.
9、What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?
    A. Computers are much easier to operate.
    B. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
    C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
    D. Data security measures are guaranteed.
10、What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?
    A. It’ll be environment-friendly. B. It’ll reach consumers soon.
    C. It’ll be made of plastics. D. It’ll help speed up typing.
11、Where is this text most likely from?
    A. A diary. B. A guidebook C. A novel. D. A magazine.
A few days ago I was sitting in a Thai restaurant enjoying a meal when I got a phone call from a friend I hadn’t spoken to for a long time. Full of enthusiasm and excitement I talked slightly louder than usual and in Spanish, my mother tongue.
A few minutes into the call the lady sitting beside me got up, seemingly upset, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate her to a table as far away as possible from “this man who won’t get off his phone”
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and felt the urge to go over and apologize. Before getting up I looked around to see where she was and I found she was, indeed, at the table furthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out of the window, looking a bit sad.
Right then I quit my plan for a conventional apologetic gesture and decided to conduct an experiment. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I took one out. When signing my check I asked the waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to my credit card instead of her bill.
I left the restaurant, letting the waiter know I would be back in a few hours to pick up my credit card. I returned later as promised, excited to learn the result.
To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way. A group of restaurant staff approached me with joy, telling me that the lady had dined there many times, but they had never seen her smile and laugh like she did upon receiving the smile card and the $0 check.
12、Why did the lady ask the restaurant staff to relocate her?
    A.She didn't understand Spanish.
B.She preferred to stay on her own.
C.She wanted to sit beside the window.
D.She felt bothered by the author's phone call.
13、What did the author want to do first after he ended his phone call?
A.Apologize to the lady. B.Pay for the lady's meal.
C.Conduct an experiment. D.Give the lady a smile card.
14、According to the text, the lady_______.
A.was unfriendly to others B.was too poor to afford a meal
C.was not happy deep in her heart D.was particular about where she sat
15、What is the best title fir the text?

    Friday 6 November
I have been a senior high school student for about three months and there are a great many memorable things. Last week, when I played basketball, I fell and twisted my ankle accidentally. You can imagine how helpless I was because the next class was about to begin. Fortunately, a girl I didn’t know before helped me to my classroom and she told me that she was in the next classroom. What was amazing is that both of us loved painting and we became good friends later. I truly feel that it was a wonderful thing that happened to me, because it tells me that there are always kind people around us, who always give others warmth. In addition, if something terrible happens to us, don’t worry, because something good may follow it.
