Sailing may seem too difficult for us, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind. First, you must ask yourself, "Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?" You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.
Let's start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should beat a 90°angle(角度) to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.
If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动). It shouldn't look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.
Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can't go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.
4、What should you consider first while sailing?
A. Wave levels. B. Size of sails.
C.Wind directions. D. Sailors'strength.
5、What does the underlined word "It" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The wind. B. The angle. C.The boat. D. The sail.
6、What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?
A.Tack the boat. B.Lower the sail.
C. Move in a straight line. D. Allow the sail to flap.
7、Where is the text probably from?
A. A physics textbook. B. A popular magazine.
C.A tourist guidebook. D. An official report.
New emojis(表情符号) appear every year. The updates come from a California-based non-profit committee called Unicode Consortium. Each year, the emoji committee releases new emojis that will update the existing keyboard.
Jennifer Daniel, chair of the committee, says that it's not the organization coming up with these new characters. It's the public.
The first emoji keyboard was created in Japan in the 1990s by mobile phone company designer Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita created emojis because the company offered email communications that were limited to 250 characters and an emoji is only one character each but can be used to say more. Emojis have become popular around the world-92 percent of the online population uses them.
“They aren't tied to any language. They aren't tied to any region of the world,” she says.
Anyone is allowed to submit(提交) new emojis, and if they make a strong enough case, Unicode will accept them. "We do get suggestions in lots of different languages from around the world," says Daniel.
An emoji idea has to meet certain criteria(标准).These criteria include its clear differences, whether it can be used with existing emojis and whether it can have multiple meanings. The popular face with "tears of joy" emoji, for example, is easy to identify, which makes it distinct. You can pair it with many other emojis to convey how you are feeling. Additionally, this emoji has adopted many meanings.
Kids today are very familiar with emojis and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. "They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they're more willing to take risks," Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.
8、Which best describes emojis?
A.They vary from place to place. B.They are more expressive than words.
C. They make daily talk more difficult. D. They are limited in computers.
9、What can we learn about Unicode Consortium?
A. It gives emojis new meanings. B. It invents new emojis every year.
C. It created the first emoji keyboard. D. It judges the submission of new emojis.
10、Why is the popular face with "tears of joy" emoji mentioned?
A. To prove its difference from others.
B.To let the emoji be accepted by more people.
C.To make the criteria understood more easily.
D. To show its popularity among young people.
11、What's the younger generation's attitude towards using emojis?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C.Cautious. D. Critical.
Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards(危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers(制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University(GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, "To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what's around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably."
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. (Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
12、What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text?

34、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was preparing lunch in the kitchen while my 2-year-old son, Adam, was playing by himself at the front door. Suddenly, I heard him shouting, "Look, Mom! Doggie!" I put away what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door. Brandy, our next-door neighbor's 1l-year-old dog, was there again. I quickly ran out, shouting at her, "Go away!"
Brandy's owner, an old woman, had died about a month before. Her family had emptied her house and put up a "For Sale" sign in the front yard, but they had left old Brandy behind. Nowhere to go, for weeks, she'd been wandering around(徘徊) the neighborhood.
It wasn't that I disliked dogs or anything like that. I just didn't think about them very much. I had never kept a dog as a pet and had never thought to get one.
Brandy ran away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone was ringing. I went inside to get the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool, but couldn't find him. I was so nervous that I ran back home and called the police, then my husband.
We searched the neighborhood carefully. Suddenly I heard a dog barking in the distance. "It's coming from the woods," one of my neighbors said. We followed the barking to a wooded cliff(悬崖). There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep. Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the edge. When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on the ground, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

34、答案:
I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house. She hesitated for a moment on our doorstep, no doubt remembering the time I'd driven her away. Seeing her reaction, I felt ashamed. I was really grateful for what she had done for my son. But for her holding Adam for hours, he would have died because of falling down the cliff. At that moment, I was sincerely willing to accept her as a member of our family.
After a simple discussion with my husband, I made a decision. I decided to have a conversation with Brandy. “Come on, girl,” I said. “This is your home now.” Brandy stepped in, and once she saw she was really welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She'd done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it. She'd certainly touched me in a way that no animal ever had. What a pity a dog like Brandy had been left behind!
