    A

Deserts are dry ecosystems that receive less than 250 millimetres of rainfall a year on average. Here are the world’s several big deserts.

    Antarctic Desert

Antarctica is, on average, the coldest, windiest and driest of all the world’s continents. With an average annual rainfall of just 166 millimetres along the coastal regions and even less farther inland, it meets the standard of a desert. The continent has only plants that can live in a region so cold and dry.

    Australian Desert

The Australian desert consists of ten interlinked smaller deserts. Together, they cover 18 percent of the mainland and contribute to making Australia the world’s second driest continent. The deserts are far from deserted, populated by native animals like kangaroos.

    Arabian Desert

The Arabian Desert covers the entire Arabian Peninsula and contains the Rub’al-Khali, one of the world’s largest continuous bodies of sand. Bedouins, the native people, have crossed these sands for centuries, driving sheep, cattle, camels and goats into the desert during the rainy winter season and moving back toward farmland during the dry summer months.

    Kalahari Desert

Strictly speaking, the Kalahari doesn’t meet the standard of a desert as its wettest regions can receive more than 500 millimetres of rain in very wet years. However, it remains extremely dry. Rain filters(渗入)rapidly through the vast expanses of sand, leaving nothing on the surface. The evaporation (蒸发) rate is twice as great as the rainfall in the southwestern half of the Kalahari. The desert is home to several important national parks and reserves, providing shelters for various species.

    21. Which desert is made up of smaller deserts?

    A. Antarctic Desert. B. Australian Desert. C. Arabian Desert. D. Kalahari Desert.

    22. What do we know about Bedouins?

    A. They are on the move. B. They are good at growing plants.

    C. They come from Australia. D. They benefit from local tourism.

    23. What is special about Kalahari Desert?

    A. It has enough rainfalls. B. It covers a big area C. It is poorly protected. D. It dries up quickly.

    B

I have always had pets. My first animal friends were guinea pigs. And then I tried my best to persuade my parents to get a dog. For some reason they did not seem to believe I would walk the dog three times a day, no matter how hard I tried.

Then my mother said a friend’s cat had had kittens and we could go and get one. At first I was disappointed, but with time I learned to love our cat so much I have had cats ever since.

I just have to remember to bolt everything into place. If I don’t, things fly (they seem to get airborne when cats are around —the more expensive an object is, the more it seems to enjoy flying).

Also, watering plants is no problem. During the years all the plants have disappeared except the cactuses (仙人掌). They don’t seem to interest cats much. Nor do they need much water. It would be nice to get flowers, but I do advise against anyone bringing them to me. No matter what flower — it is considered a kitty snack.

Changing furniture is nice too. Cats help in letting us know when it is time to change the sofa. Either when the fabric starts to look like Einstein’s hair that has been combed with cats’ paws (爪子), or when no amount of vacuuming (用吸尘器打扫) helps in revealing the original color of the couch, thanks to the generous donation of cat hair. A soft sofa is nice, sure, but it sort of gets a bit embarrassing when, all our guests leave the house with fur-trousers.

I could go on and on to tell you more interesting stories between us next time!

    24. Why did the author’s parents turn him down when he wanted to have a dog?

    A. They didn’t favour dogs. B. They didn’t think he could attend dogs well.

    C. They had already had a pet. D. They thought dogs might mess the house up.

    25. Which of the following can explain “bolt everything into place” underlined in paragraph 3?

    A. Keep everything fastened. B. Keep everything organized.

    C. Have everything prepared. D. Have everything repaired.

    26. What can we infer about the plants from paragraph 4?

    A. They are replaced by new ones. B. They are sent to the guests.

    C. They are mostly eaten by the cats. D. They are frequently watered.

    27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To complain about his cats. B. To share fun experiences of petting cats.

    C. To compare his different pets. D. To introduce his skills for keeping pets.

    C

Accompanied by typical Jin opera music, a red-faced performer with a long beard showed up at the hall of a high school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. All the students in the hall stood up and craned (伸长) their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was something from the past.

They are not alone. It goes without saying that kids nowadays are much more familiar with popular music than traditional opera, which is why performing artist Wu Lingyun, together with his colleagues, goes to campuses to promote the art.

Wu Lingyun is best known for his role as Guan Gong, a general during the late Han Dynasty period.

Wu began playing the role in 1985, at the age of 21, and has been associated with it ever since.

Wu was significantly influenced by his parents, both of whom are also famous Jin opera performers. With a natural talent for performing and great effort, Wu was soon recognized by audiences and later awarded the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award in 2000, the highest award for Chinese drama performing arts.

Given Wu’s considerable fame, one might think he would now prefer to enjoy a life of leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Wu has a big dream. He pictures a growing future for Jin opera. Wu expected more chances for more people to get to know about the art, hoping Jin opera could become a worldwide art.

Wu has also made some changes to the traditional art to bring it up-to-date.“Jin opera should keep pace with the times if we want to bring it back to life and get the young generation to accept it,“ he says. An art without life can never survive”“

    28. How did the students react to the performance at the hall?

    A. They became bored. B. They got disappointed. C. They felt curious. D. They looked casual

    29. What do we know about Wu Lingyun?

    A. He got a top award in 2000. B. He started his performance in his teens.

    C. He now enjoys a leisure life. D. He became famous because of his parents.

    30. What does Wu Lingyun expect of Jin opera?

    A. It’ll be studied as a college major. B. It’ll be officially recognized.

    C. It’ll have an easier performing form. D. It’ll be popular across the world.

    31. Which of the following best describes Wu Lingyun?

    A. Humorous. B. Kind-minded. C. Cautious. D. Devoted.

    D

To give grasshoppers (蚱蜢) some credit -- jumping across yards and between branches takes a lot more expertise than it might appear. There are incredibly tiny factors to consider, such as the resistance in launch surface, as well as desired distance, speed, and landing.

Most jumping robots can’t compete with the insect, as their jumps are limited to starting atop extremely rigid surfaces. But a new bouncing robot developed by researchers in Carnegie Mellon’s College of Engineering is crossing those barriers, and showing promise for how autonomous devices could operate in the future.

A team of scientists led by professor of mechanical engineering Sarah Bergbreiter recently optimized a robot’s latch mechanisms (弹簧机制) used to boost it upward. Previously, these latches were primarily thought of as simple “on/off switches that enabled the release of stored energy. However, Bergbreiter and her team employed mathematical modeling to illustrate that these latches both were capable of controlling energy output, as well as controlling the transfer (传递) of energy between the jumper and the launch surface.

To test their work, the team positioned a small jumping robot atop a tree branch and recorded the precise energy transfers in its jumps’ first moments. We found that the latch can not only mediate (调节)energy output but can also mediate energy transfer between the jumper and the environment that it is jumping from,” said Bergbreiter.

Now that researchers better understand the interactions at play in the opening moments of jumping, they can now begin working on ways to integrate this into future robotic designs. “It has been nearly impossible to design controlled insect-sized robots because they are launched in just milliseconds,“ explained Bergbreiter. “Now, we have more control over whether our robots are jumping up one foot or three. It’s really fascinating that the latch -- something that we already need in our robots -- can be used to control outputs that we couldn’t have controlled before.”

    32. What does the author want to show about the new robot by mentioning grasshoppers?

    A. It comes with technical difficulties. B. It can beat the insect easily.

    C. It is the first one designed for jumping. D. It is shaped like the tiny creature.

    33. What advantage do latches designed by Bergbreiter have over the traditional ones?

    A. They are better positioned in robots. B. They help release more energy at a time.

    C. They work in extreme environments. D. They have more than a single function.

34 What does Bergbreiter think of their work?

    A. It has changed their research direction. B. It inspires new applications of robots.

    C. It brings them a sense of achievement. D. It will make robots smaller and lighter.

    35. What is the text mainly about?

    A. A new model for future robots. B. A step forward in robot design.

    C. Jumping robots inspired by grasshoppers. D. Efforts to develop insect-sized robots.

During the past two years, I felt down from time to time, especially when I stayed indoors. To get out of the house, I decided to teach myself how to skate again even though it had been more than 30 years since I had been on the ice. Little did I know, I would also be teaching myself how to rise to the challenges I’d soon face in life, too.

I dug out my old figure skates, but they didn’t work. So I ordered a new pair of skates and found a place to get them sharpened. I assumed it would be easy to pick up from where I had left off, so I reserved our ice time. Armed and ready, I was awake before the online reservation system opened to secure spots at my neighborhood rink (滑冰场). I even convinced my son to join me for my first go.

Filled with fear, I estimated there was a five-centimeter drop down from the walking ledge (台子) to the ice and nothing nearby to grab onto in order to keep my balance. My son was already circling around but skated over to offer his arm for support.

I climbed down, one skate at a time and my leg shook slightly when both feet landed on the ice.

“Can I hang onto you for the first few minutes?” I asked my son nervously. I took baby steps but I had forgotten how to glide (滑行). Eager to see how far I could go, I let go of my son’s arm.

With great efforts, I began to do slow laps, inching ahead with my skates and staying close to the rink boards.

I avoided falling on my first attempt but as I walked home silently with my son, I wondered whether I should quit. Fear had held me back and I hadn’t given it my all.

“You used to skate so well, what happened?” asked my son.

    “Life got in the way.”

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But I did not cancel my future reserved ice times.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After some progress was made, I decided to sign up for adult learn-to skate lessons the following winter.
