(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)When my oldest son was in high school, he planned to attend a concert with his young friends. To my surprise, Aron invited me to go along. I quickly accepted. However, by the time the date of the concert arrived, my youngest son had been ill, and I was worried about him. My husband encouraged me to attend the concert, promising he would look after our youngest son. Finally, it hit me. Aron was 16 years old. How many years would I have to do something fun with him before he went to college? And how many youths invite their mothers to attend a concert with them that was clearly for teens? The decision was made. I’d not miss this chance.
At the concert, I sat with Aron in the third row, stuffing (填满) cotton in my ears to block out the loud music of the first performer. I stood when the kids stood, clapped (鼓掌) when they clapped, and never let anyone know how nervous I was to feel the floor shaking under my feet. Aron and his friends were amazed at my enthusiasm (热情).
When we left the concert, my ears were ringing, but it quickly passed. So did my son’s teenage years. Soon he was in college and away from home. I missed him more than I could say. On days when I was especially lonely for his happy smile, I would think back to the concert we attended and thank myself again that I didn’t miss a chance to spend time with my son.
Aron is now grown and has a family of his own, but we are still very close. Some days he calls just to chat and tell me about his day. I drop everything and enjoy the moment, knowing these times shall pass.
1.Why did Aron’s mother decide to attend a concert with Aron?
A.Because she showed great interest in a concert with loud music.
B.Because Aron’s father promised her to look after the sick 16-year-old child.
C.Because she valued the chance to spend time with her son.
D.Because it was not polite to refuse Aron’s rare invitation.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Aron’s mother loved Aron more than her youngest son.
B.Aron’s mother really enjoyed every minute of the concert.
C.Though Aron was very shy, his mother was still proud of him.
D.It was the loud music that led to the shaking of the floor during the concert.
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It’s necessary for parents to spend time with their children all the time.
B.Aron’s mother sometimes regretted attending the concert when thinking back.
C.Aron felt lonely from time to time after he attended college far from home.
D.Aron still has a close relationship with his mother even after he becomes an adult.
(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)The term “social phobia(社交恐惧症)” seems to have taken on popularity these days. Young people in particular are describing themselves as having “social phobia”. They prefer not to go out much, saying that it’s hard for them to make new friends or socialize. But is this a “real” disorder(病症)?
In fact, this is just a reaction to certain social situations. US researcher Ty Tashiro wrote the book Awkward(笨拙): The Science of Why We’re. Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome. He explains that some people don’t “read” social situations correctly and therefore end up feeling uncomfortable.
For example, they might be afraid of breaking some kind of unspoken rule. Therefore, they start to act awkwardly because they don’t want this to happen. This might make them unwilling to socialize. They prefer to stay in instead of going out to meet new people. But this doesn’t mean they have social phobia.
“Real” social phobia—also known as social worry—is much more serious. People with social worry want to go out and interact with people but are so terrified of doing it that they cannot leave their homes. Their brains simply won’t allow them to interact with others in a normal(正常地)way. People with social phobia disorder can even experience panic attacks(惊恐发作).
Luckily, social worry can be treated. Some people use self-help books to help them gain more control over their minds. Therapy can also help.
4.What does Paragraph 1 say about some young people?
A.They often go out alone.
B.They find it hard to socialize in different situations.
C.They develop new social skills to make themselves go out.
D.They don’t like to make new friends.
5.What causes people to have social worry?
A.They have a disorder in their brains. B.They aren’t interested in social interaction.
C.They are experiencing illnesses. D.They don’t trust anyone except families.
6.What does the story try to explain?
A.How to improve our social skills. B.Why people often feel worried.
C.What real social phobia is like. D.How social phobia influences everyone.
(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Imagine this: you and your friend are on a video call. He or she picks up a book, and you feel like you are holding the book as well. You can shake hands or give your friend a high five, even though you are in different places.
A pair of special gloves might make this a reality. Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have made gloves that can recreate the sense of touch. They call this haptic device(触觉装置)a “soft skin stretch device”(SSD).
The SSD works like this: One user’s gloves create 3D force signals when they touch something. The signals are sent to the other user’s gloves, which vibrate(震动)to create the same force that the first user is experiencing. This allows the second user to experience the same sense of touch.
The SSD allows you to feel force, vibration and movement. “It is like wearing a second skin,” said Thanh Nho Do, one of the researchers who created the gloves.
Haptic technology is already being widely used. For example, the trackpads(触控板)in notebook computers use vibration to make it feel like you are clicking a real mouse. However, it is difficult to recreate the sense of touch in virtual(虚拟的)environments or remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead researcher of the SSD project. The SSD is special because it has a high level of sensitivity(灵敏度)even when it is used continuously. This makes it feel more realistic.
The SSD could be used in medical practice. Two doctors in separate places could work together during an operation—one touches the patient with the SSD while the other doctor feels the same sensation and completes the real operation.
7.What is the “SSD” in the story?
A.A video chat app. B.A special pair of gloves.
C.A computer hard drive. D.A winter overcoat.
8.What does the underlined word “signal” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.标志 B.信号 C.符号 D.姿势
9.Why does the SSD feel so realistic?
A.Because it creates vibrations. B.Because it strengthens the senses.
C.Because it is highly sensitive. D.Because it works remotely.
10.What do we know from the story?
A.The SSD aims to improve video calls. B.Haptic devices are hard to use.
C.The SSD makes remote operations possible. D.Haptic technology is mostly used in games.

There are a few different kinds of hockey, including ice hockey and field hockey. One of the biggest differences between the sports is the surface on which they are played. Some suggest that field hockey has been around for thousands of years. There is evidence to support that a similar game was played by ancient people in Greece and Rome.
Ice hockey has been around, officially, since the late 1800s. This is when the rules were made by J.A.Creighton. The first league was in place by the early 1900s. Later, ice hockey became an Olympic sport.
Hockey is a team sport with six players on two opposing teams. The game is played on a rink of ice with two goals at each end. The standard rink size is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Players, all wearing ice skates, move a disk called a puck around the ice. Their purpose is to shoot the puck into the other team’s goal. The goal is a net that is six feet wide and four feet tall. Each goal is guarded by a goalie, who is the only one that can touch the puck with his hockey stick as well as any part of his body. Goalies can even use their feet to stop the puck from getting into the net.
A hockey stick is what players use to move the puck. It is usually 5 to 6 feet in length with a flat blade at the end. Hockey sticks are straight sticks made of wood. The puck is made of vulcanized (硫化的) rubber, which is a much better material than the first pucks. It’s said that the first informal hockey games were played with pucks made of frozen cow waste! The modern puck is typically one inch thick and three inches in diameter.
36 Instead, the names of the winning hockey team’s players, coaches, and managers are added to the presentation cup. There are five rings of names. The oldest ring is removed when a new one is added.
Today, ice hockey is the most popular team sport played on the ice all over the world.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Dr. Nate Lewis patiently adds a chemical to a machine in his laboratory. The chemical smells a little bit like rotten (变质的) fish. We know that because we have our noses to smell and know it. Dr. Lewis, however, wonders if his machine can smell the chemical, too. The machine is actually an electronic nose.
You might wonder why anyone would want to build an electronic nose. After all, if you want to smell something, you can just breathe in through your own nose. For example, it’s common for someone to smell a bottle of milk to check if it has gone bad. But imagine if a person had to smell the thousands of bottles of milk that farms produce every day-all that milk would go bad long before the testing was done! The food industry uses electronic noses every day to test the foods for freshness.
There are millions of different smells in the world. How can our nose tell the difference between all these smells? Scientists know there are cells in our noses that act as smell detectors (探测器). They think that a certain pattern of cells respond (回应) to every smell. Our nose creates a fingerprint for each smell using this pattern. Our brain understands all the odor (气味) fingerprints, Dr. Lewis’s electronic nose works like the human nose to detect odor fingerprints.
The biggest difference, however, between human noses and the electronic noses that have been built so far is the brain. We need our brains to explain each smell we meet. But the electronic nose can only identify the chemical makeup of a smell while our brain can decide whether something your nose smells is good or bad. “It doesn’t know which smells it likes and which is terrible because it can’t think.” explains Dr. Lewis.
Dr. Lewis is working on how to make the electronic nose get smarter. Maybe someday fridges with electronic noses will tell you when food has gone bad, or your locker room will use them to remind you to wash your sports clothes. There are many possible uses for a machine to take the place of the human nose. Every day scientists are getting closer to building a more perfect electronic nose.
18.What does the writer mean by saying the underlined sentence “all that milk would go bad long before the testing was done” in Paragraph 2?
A.It’s necessary to invent an electronic nose.
B.The test machine usually makes the milk go bad.
C.We don’t need to test the smell of the milk every day.
D.It takes electronic noses a long time to test the smell.
19.What can we know about Dr. Lewis’s electronic nose?
A.It must work together with human noses. B.It works like other electronic noses.
C.Its working process (过程) is similar to human noses. D.It can’t tell the rotten food at all.
20.Which of the following statement might the writer agree with?
A.Electronic noses will help us wash clothes.
B.Electronic noses will disappear sooner or later.
C.Electronic noses will be widely used in our daily life.
D.Electronic noses will completely take the place of human noses to tell the smell.
(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)On Dec.9, 2021, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, who are working abroad the Tiangong space station, showed millions of students their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity. But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to sustain our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
________
During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why?
We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. It is like a “skin” of water. The “skin”is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin” stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws in sealed bags.
21.What can we learn about the lecture from space?
A.It is a part of the astronauts’ daily work. B.It took place in the International Space Station.
C.It is one of the astronauts’ ways to ask for help. D.It took place 400 kilometers above Earth.
22.What does the underlined word “they” in the passage refer to?
A.astronauts B.muscles C.bones D.bodies

A.Space water is valuable B.Space water is different
C.Space water is important D.Space water is interesting

A.To raise people’s interest in space exploration.
B.To explain the importance of space experiments.
C.To ask readers to do more science experiments.
D.To introduce the space lecture given by Chinese astronauts.
(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)I have tried to write a ghost story that won’t make you unhappy with yourselves, with each other, with seasons, or with me. I hope it haunts your houses pleasantly.
Charles Dickens
One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew (侄子).
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug (骗人的话)! ”
“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, uncle.” said his nephew.
“I do.” said Scrooge “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.”
“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don’t be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” answered the uncle. “I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!”
“Uncle! Please don’t say that!” said the nephew. “I’ve always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable happy time. And so, Uncle Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”
Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded (鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.
“One more sound from you. Bob Cratchit,” said Scrooge, “and you’ll celebrate Christmas by losing your job!”
“Don’t be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.”
“No.” said Scrooge.
“I’m sorry you don’t want to cerebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”
“Good afternoon!” said Scrooge.

Gong made a complaint and required the video company to return all the money. But “It’s in the air so far.” Gong told workers’ Daily.
This is not a single case in which children have paid a great deal of money to play online games. The Guangdong Consumer Council (消费者委员会) has received more than 10,000 similar complaints from local parents in the first three months of this year.
Because of the increasing number of similar cases, the council talked with many online game companies in the province, strongly suggesting that they should introduce useful methods to protect the consumer rights of children.
In fact, many online companies and mobile apps have provided a youth mode, announcing that parents can control the content and limit the time their children spend in using the apps.
However, according to the consumer survey report by the Jiangsu Consumer Council. Some of the protection modes of companies such as Huya, Douyu, Bilibili and Team Talk are far from useful.
For example users of all of the above companies can extend watching time by entering a password. Team Talk’s youth mode is no different from the usual mode, which means that children can watch all content. Wang Yihan, 16, from Fuzhou No. l High School, shared her experience. She said “Some apps would only send a notice to check whether the user is over 18 years old. The user can simply choose “Yes’ and star playing the game. It’s no good.”
According to Guangdong Consumer Council, game companies are being advised to introduce different methods to check who the players are, including fingerprint, password or facial recognition (人脸识别) when children pay to play online games.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)I have been a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Dagligtale, since my first day here at the University of Alberta. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students, the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist. I have learned to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of asking people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything you can!

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)When visitors to the Palace Museum feel a need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they soon will be able to turn to their smart phones for the information they need.
This modern solution comes thanks to an agreement signed on Friday by the museum and Huawei Co., the telecommunication giant, to build a “smart network” using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China’s royal palace from 1420 to 1911.
“It’s important to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics, such as when the priceless painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 a.m. to have a look. The museum ended up preparing fast food to serve the hungry visitors. “I don’t want that scenario to happen again”, Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.”
The new system will also make use of the closed-cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum’s precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?” Shan said. “After adopting the Internet of Things, we can instantly (立即) detect any motion involving the relics to prevent such threats.”
The 5G network also will be used to improve remote meeting through webcams, which will discuss with scholars to jointly find the best answers for repair and store issues.
39.What do we know about the Palace Museum?
A.Its visitors won’t have to queue up for the bathroom.
B.It has served as China’s royal palace for over 500 years.
C.It will cooperate with Huawei to promote its management.
D.It will set up advanced television cameras only for the purpose of safety.
40.What are the figures (数字) in Paragraph 4 intended to show about the Palace Museum?
A.It is better than any other museums. B.It has a rich collection of cultural relics.
C.It enjoys great popularity all over the world. D.If faces a tough challenge of protecting relics.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Trees are one of the oldest “citizens” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Life is hard but the value of life is how you live it bravely. A man who overcomes himself is a real strong man in life. Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees as well as ours!

B.Because trees devote all their lifetime to satisfying people and protecting the Earth.
C.Because life is meaningful though there are challenges in different periods of life.
D.Because life is becoming better and better with so many beautiful and useful trees.

Girls usually did not learn these skills at that time, but Mulan’s father believed everyone should know how to fight, even girls.
One day, the government officials sent soldiers to Mulan’s village. Because the war was coming, men were needed for the army. The military leader of the group posted a list of names on the village’s wall. Each name represented one volunteer, one man from each family.
Mulan saw her father’s name on the list. She knew her father would never return alive if he was there. Mulan’s brother was a young child. There was only Mulan who could take her father’s place. But the military did not take girls as replacements for fighting men.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Do you have good friends? Do you sometimes feel so close to them that they are like family to you?
It turns out that this isn’t just an expression. A study by Yale University has found that you and your friends have more genes(基因) in common than strangers do. Researchers looked at the genes of 1, 932 people and compared them in pairs of unrelated friends and strangers. They found that friends have 1% of genes that match.
“1% of genes may not sound like much to the layperson(外行), but to geneticists(遗传学家) it is a larger number,” Professor Nicholas Christakis of Yale University told Discovery News. In fact, this is the same amount of genes you share with your fourth cousins, those who have the same great-great-great grandparents as you.
So do you happen to become friends with people who share your genes? Not at all. In fact, it is evolution(进化) that brings you together.
People who share certain genes also share skills and have similar likes and dislikes, researchers said. In ancient times, it was important that people who were alike stayed together. For example, people who had a similar susceptibility(易感性) to the cold were more likely to help each other build a fire, giving them a better chance to stay alive.
Researchers also found that among all the genes studied, those producing a change in sense of smell were the most similar in friends. This is probably because people who smell things in the same way are more easily drawn to similar environments. For example, people who like the smell of coffee may hang out at cafes(咖啡馆) more often and as a result are more likely to meet and become friends with each other.
With their findings, the team has developed an interesting test called the “friendship score”. It can help tell how big the chances are that two people will be friends by studying their genes.
So, here is a question for you: would you like to take this test and know in advance(提前) who your friends are going to be, or would you still prefer to learn about it by yourself and let time be the judge?

How can people in ancient times do calculations(计算)? In the very beginning, the cleverest thought of using stones and seashells. Then, around the 2nd century BC, they invented the abacus. Some researchers consider the invention to be the world’s oldest “calculator”. In China, people used abacuses to do calculations quickly for thousands of years before electronic calculators became popular.
The abacus is usually made of wood. It has many beads(珠子). Each bead above the horizontal divider(横向分隔竿) stands for five, and each bead below the divider stands for one. As for the vertical rods(竖向分隔竿), each one stands for a different digit(数位). The rightmost is ones, the second is tens, the third is hundreds, and so on. Each bead in the central area has a value. Those away from the horizontal divider are ready to use. By moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations. Because of this, abacus computations are also called “bead computations”.
It is a joy to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock and after a few seconds, the result comes out. It requires lots of practice to use the abacus well. In the past, the use of the abacus was taught in all schools. It was considered to be an important skill that everybody needed to pick up.
Today, abacuses are no longer widely used. However, we can still feel the important roles they once played. Abacuses have become a symbol. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. But we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Fresh green grass, hundreds of colorful wild flowers, water running into little pools, birds making their homes in boxes, the 9,500-square-meter Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park, but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs (屋顶) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.
Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modern city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.
Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect”. On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. Rooftops covered with plants help keep buildings cool. Green roofs take in rain water and protect the city drainage (排水) system. They can reduce water runoff into streets and storm water systems. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
Also, _______. Small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it. Though they won’t directly replace ground environments, they’re perfect for attracting birds and other wildlife to create a eco-friendly habitat (栖息地).
A green roof helps to improve the overall air quality, too. According to a study, green roofs help reduce (减少) up to:
37% of sulfur dioxide
21% of nitrous acid
0.2kg of dust particles / square meter each year
While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and traffic, whether you’re at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block?
73.With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain ________.
A.how wildlife is protected B.what a green roof is like
C.how to organize a good park D.what to do with a spare roof
74.The word “moderate” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.raise B.check C.record D.control
75.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?
A.a green roof is alive B.a green roof protects animals
C.a green roof is perfect D.a green roof helps the environment
(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)A new study by researchers at the University of Oxford has suggested catching COVID-19 may lead to changes to the brain.
It is as yet unclear if the changes are lasting, but Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans have shown that even in mild(轻症)cases of infection(感染), patients’ brains have become a little smaller. The lost tissues(组织)have influenced areas of the brain connected to memory and the sense of smell.
“We were looking at small infection, so to see that we could really see some differences in their brain and how much their brain had changed,” Gwenaelle Douaud, a professor the University of Oxford, told the BBC.
The findings of the team’s study are published in the Journal Nature. It got help from the findings of an early long-term research project looking at the health of half a million people that the UK Biobank has been carrying out for more than ten years.
This allowed researchers to compare people’s health before and after infection. It looked at 401 participants(参与者)who had been infected, about four and a half months after their infection, which in 96 percent of cases were seen as mild, and compared their overall health with 384 people who had not been infected.
Among the differences noted were brain shrinkage(脑萎缩)of up to 2 percent. Another part of the study reported that people who had tested positive(阳性)needed more time to complete many different cognitive tests, with researchers explaining “an important, harmful influence connected to COVID-19” .
It may also shine some light on the topic of long COVID, which some patients have experienced long after early infection.

I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took the treasure to the cave. This morning, when Long John Silver and his men came to look for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. He thought I was a ghost.” Ben laughed. “He ran off, and this gave me time to get back to the squire(乡绅) and the doctor. They were waiting at the cave.”
“Now I know,” I said to the doctor, “why you gave the map to Silver.”
“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”
When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.
“Three of the mutineers(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”
I went into the cave. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasure—a pile of gold coins.
“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I don’t think you or I will be going to see again.”

The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didn’t care about the three men. We left them on the island.
I will not tell you about the journey home. Nothing important happened. But as soon as we got to Bristol, Long John Silver ran away. He took some of the gold with him. None of us cared. We were pleased to see the back of him. We each shared the treasure and used it in a different way.

Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting to me. “I’ve got it,” he cried, as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underground, isn’t it?”
“So?” I said.
“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved (雕刻) out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve the White Prince out on the hillside — he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too. ”
“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.
“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.
Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping (刨土) away with spades (铲子), and we had buckets (桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together — paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.
It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain in the summer, the butterflies — Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up — come out to drink on the chalk face. Then the White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature.
So now you know how Bertie’s white lion became the White Prince and how the White Prince became our butterfly lion.

(2022·江苏常州·常州市第二十四中学校考二模)Empathy(同理心)is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction(自满)is much talked about, it is in short supply(供应)but highly needed. The most important thing is to teach the young kids what it means to have empathy for those around them.
What Is Empathy?
Many people have trouble telling sympathy(同情心)from empathy, but they are two different values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone’s feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to understand how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, respect, and understanding.
Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy.
While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy showed by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents communicate with their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and reply to emotions(情感)in a friendly and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.
Meet Emotional Needs.
When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are based on what they are receiving, meaning that they are safe enough to give to others when the need appears but first they need to receive. An empty jug can not fill a cup.
It’s a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to deal with emotions in a healthy way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a reply is required.
90.Why should the young kids be taught to have empathy?
A.Because people try to care more about themselves.
B.Because everyone feels satisfied with themselves.
C.Because empathy is more important than sympathy.
D.Because it’s better to give empathy than to receive it.
91.Which situation can empathy be used in?
A.When a student is working hard for an important test.
B.When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.
C.When a criminal is trying to gain people’s trust.
D.When a father is showing his son how to do gardening.
92.What does the underlined sentence in Para.4 mean?
A.An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.
B.It’s important to talk to kids about emotions.
C.Adults should set an example to kids.
D.Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first.
93.What is the main topic of the passage?
A.How to train kids to have empathy.
B.How to tell sympathy from empathy.
C.How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks.
D.Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic.
(2022·江苏常州·常州市第二十四中学校考二模)My 6-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she saw me for the first time. “Grandma, you are an antique,” she said. “You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique.”
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out a dictionary and read the definition(定义)to Jenny. I explained, “An antique is not only old. It’ s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art...a piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured, “I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary.” They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. To look as good as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old.”
“I’m only 67,” I reminded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from Aunt Rome to another and finally to our family. “It’s very old,” I told Jenny. “I try to keep it shiny and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques.”
There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. “Now that’s an antique,” I said with pride. “Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked up and scratched(刮坏) and not in very good condition.” Sometimes age does that,” I told Jenny. “But the marks are good marks. They show living, or being around. That’s something to show with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become.” I believed this was important for my own self-worth.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a flower vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn’t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They’d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They’d lasted through years and years. They could have been thrown away, or ignored, or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “I don’t have any antiques but you,” she said. Then her face brightened. “Could I take you to school for show and tell?”
“Only if I fit into your backpack,”I answered. And then Jenny’s antique lifted her up and gave her a hug that would last through the years.
94.Grandma read the definition of “antique” to Jenny in order to ________.
A.express her unhappiness at being called “antique”
B.list all the important characteristics of antiques
C.tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques
D.change Jenny’s understanding of antiques
95.Which of the following information did grandma express to Jenny?
A.The desk reminded her of her dear relatives.
B.The marks on the picture showed its age and value.
C.There was usually a sad story behind each antique.
D.She planned to buy a new flower vase to replace the old one.
96.What can be inferred(推断)from the last paragraph?
A.Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up.
B.Jenny was too young to know grandma’s humor.
C.Grandma had a deep long-lasting love for Jenny.
D.Jenny had a strong wish for grandma’s love.
97.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.A list of Antiques B.Grandma’s Antique
