(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)Humans are social animals. They live in groups all over the world. As these groups of people live apart from other groups, over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas, which form different cultures. One important particular side of every culture is how its people deal with time.
Time is not very important in non industrial societies. The Nuer people of East Africa, for example, do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time. The daily lives of the people of such non industrial societies are likely to be patterned around their physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule (时间表) based on the clock. They cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down. They plant crops during the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a clock or calendar(日历), but by saying that an event takes place before or after some other event. Frequently such a society measures day in terms of “sleeps” or longer periods in terms of “moons”. Some cultures, such as the Eakinos of Greenland measure seasons according to the migration of certain animals.
Some cultures which do not have a written language or keep written records have developed interesting ways of “telling time”. For example, when several Australian aborigines want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way. When this happens, the people see that the agreed - upon time has arrived and the event can take place.
In contrast (成对比), exactly correct measurement of time is very important in modern, in detribalized societies. This is because industrialized societies require the helpful efforts of many people in order to work. For a factory to work efficiently (well, quickly and without waste), for example , all of the workers must work at the same time, Therefore, they must know what time to start work in the morning and what time they may go home in the afternoon. Passengers must know the exact time that an airplane will arrive or depart. Students and teachers need to know when a class starts and ends. Stores must open on time in order to serve their customers. Complicated (复杂的) societies need clocks and calendars. Thus, we can see that if each person worked according to his or her own schedule, a complicated society could hardly work at all.
8.By saying “Humans are social animals”, the author means ________.
A.they live all over the world.
B.they are different from other animals
C.they live in one area as a whole
D.they are divided into many groups
9.Time is not very important in non industrial societies. This is because people in those societies ________.
A.don’t have the word TIME in their languages
B.don’t get used to using clocks and other timepieces
C.don’t measure time in their daily lives
D.don’t need to plan their daily lives around an exact time schedule
10.The Australian aborigines’ way of “telling time” is based on ________.
A.the change of the sun rays
B.the movement of the earth in relation to the sun
    C.the position of the stone
D.the position of the tree or the cliff
11.Which of the following night be the best title for this passage?
    A.Time and Culture
    B.The Measurement of Time
    C.Time schedule and Daily Life

Buck lived at a big house in a sunny valley in California which was owned by Judge Miller. And Buck ruled over it all. He was born there. and had lived there for the four years of his life. There were many other dogs, but they lived together in the Kennels (狗窝), or inside the house. But Buck was neither s house dog or a kennel dog. The whole of Judge Miller’s lands was his. Give your dead batteries a new life. Recycle them!Batteries are used to power clocks, computers, tools and more. However, your  batteries have some serious power when their lives are over.

    WHY TO RECYCLE BATTERIES:
Remember, batteries are harmful waste. This means we should properly throw them away. You may not think one little battery can cause that much pollution. But don't think of it as just one battery—there can be millions. In Canada, each person uses about 20 single-use batteries every year. That's about 700 million batteries! If all these batteries end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场),the heavy metals inside them can get into the water, land and air. It can be harmful to humans and wildlife.
By recycling single-use batteries, you can cut down pollution and also help save energy. All batteries are mainly made of plastic and valuable metals. Through recycling programs, dead batteries can be changed into something useful like steel products, or even new batteries!

    HOW TO RECYCLE BATTERIES:
Make a difference by starting to collect batteries at your home or school today. You can prepare a box for battery collection and invite friends, family and classmates to bring in old batteries to be recycled.
There are many safe ways to deal with your batteries. You can:
●Find a Call2Recycle public collection station near you. ● Ask the store where you bought the batteries if you can return them there.
●Communicate with your local city government to find out if there are special programs for recycling used batteries!

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)I strongly believe that we can have an important effect on anyone we meet. The right words at just the right time could totally change someone's life. That's what happened to me years ago.
When I was a 3-year-old boy, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. After asking many doctors, educational specialists and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a mainstream school. All of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing.
From the time I started going there in the third grade, I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School in the small town of Latham, New York. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me and called me names mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked.
I worried throughout Elementary school because, except the problems of "fitting in" with the other students, I also struggled with most of my schoolwork.
Although I seemed outgoing, my self-esteem(自尊心)was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a weird-looking box around his neck who wasn't even smart enough to keep up with the other kids.
Mrs. Jordan, my fifth-grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. Mrs. Jordan was a large woman with a voice that bounced(反弹)off the walls of her tiny classroom. One morning, she asked the class a question.
I read her lips(嘴唇)and immediately raised my hand. For once I knew the answer. But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath, stood up slowly and answered Mrs. Jordan's question in a low voice.
I will never forget what happened next.
Mrs. Jordan pointed directly at me. With shining eyes and a wide smile she cried: "That's right, Stephen!"
For the first time in my life, I was an instant star. My confidence soared like never before.
I decided right then and there that I would make a place for myself in this world. No matter how many difficulties I might meet in life, I knew I could overcome them. A simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm had totally changed my young life. "That's right, Stephen!"

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?
Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction—clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.
As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents(洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds. ▲ Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet's wettest places.
Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert(沙漠) areas reduce from 42 million square kilometers to 31 million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered with deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.
However, deserts don't disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.
A backward spin would keep the main features of Earth's geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.
23.Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank of Paragraph 3?
A.Anyway deserts cover the planet. B.Therefore, the weather is different.
C.However the positions of oceans changes. D.Surprisingly the area of lands is larger.
24.The underlined word "oasis" in Paragraph 4 means________.
A.a place in a desert where there is sand and stones all over
B.a rich land in a desert where the water table is near the surface
C.a large body of salt water partially enclosed by land or an ocean
D.a large smooth area which is over 500 metres above the sea level
25.What would a backward spin bring to Earth?
A.The direction of ocean currents and winds would be different.
B.Rain would no longer fall on western areas of the lands on Earth.
C.Deserts would become larger and cover the planet's wettest places.
D.The size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans would be changed.
26.The passage is most probably taken from a magazine on ________.
    A.history B.travel C.entertainment D.geography

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)If you have ever passed the cockpit(驾驶舱) in a flight and tried to understand your pilots' conversation, you probably didn't gain much from them. From terms like "niner" to "Zulu", pilot-speak can sound like its own language.
The special language is called "aviation English". According to the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO), pilots on international airlines and air traffic controllers on airlines need to speak "aviation English" when they communicate. Aviation English is necessary all over the world because it is unrealistic for a pilot to know all the different languages of the country to which he or she must fly. In addition, most of the phrases flight crew use were born out of a need for clear communication with a few words over an occasionally fuzzy(模糊不清的) radio transmission. Pilots must make effort to reduce their transmission time.
Misunderstandings between pilots and air traffic controllers can lead to disaster, so they must make sure not to misunderstand one another. To avoid making a mistake about understanding with similar sounding consonants, the ICAO has a standard phonetic alphabet: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot Golf. Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. These words stand for the letters from A to Z. The pronunciation of numbers should also follow exact standards. For example, zero(0) is always "zero", not "oh". 3 becomes "tree". 4 is called "fower",5 becomes "fife", and 9 becomes "niner".
There are also more colorful phrases that pilots say were produced in the sky and shared widely among them. For example, "Feet wet" warns air traffic controllers when a military aircraft is flying overwater. "Pan-pan" is reserved for communication with air traffic controllers. When pilots notice something unusual with their plane that stops short of an immediate emergency, they use "Pan-pan", a signal of urgency(紧迫) and attention. When pilots use this signal, others on the same radio frequency will "shut up and let you get your message across", allowing air traffic control to provide the suitable aid and prevent a great danger in flight.
27.Pilots and air traffic controllers use aviation English in order to ________.
    ①save the transmission time
②make the orders clear and simple
    ③avoid mistaking passengers' conversation
    ④make international communication possible
    A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
28.If a pilot says "Papa, November, Two, Tree", it may stand for ________.
    A.PU2T B.8811TT C.PN23 D.88NT3
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.An organization called ICAO created aviation English.
B.Aviation English is really necessary on national airlines.
C.A pilot will report "Feet wet" if there is much water in his cockpit.
D."Pan-pan" means the plane meets some trouble and needs attention.
30.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.They Have Their Secret Language B.Pilots' Language Is Hard To Learn
C.Here's What They're Really Saying D.Aviation English Is Developing Quickly

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)Taking online classes is becoming increasingly popular, but students have different opinions about it.
    Wang Qi, 14
I love taking online courses. They give me a lot more choices and freedom. We can choose to learn whatever we want. Also, online classes enable us to study whenever and wherever we want, which is very convenient.
    Wu Jun, 13
I don’t think taking online classes is a good way to study. There are many temptations (诱惑) on the internet. Students can be distracted (使分心) from their courses easily. The whole learning process is not as organized as it is in the classroom.
    Zhou Siya, 13
Online classrooms are beneficial (有益的). We might feel more focused on (集中于)learning when we are alone in front of a computer with no one to distract us. In addition, taking courses online also means we can have more time to use a computer, which is a good way to practice our computer skills.
    Li Chunjie, 14
I think the idea of taking online courses is crazy. It can increase our exposure (接触) to computers and the radiation (辐射) from them could do harm to the human body, especially our eyes. Also, sitting in front of a computer for a long time without exercising can be harmful to our health.

31.How many students support online learning?
    A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
32.What’s NOT Zhou Siya’s opinion about taking online courses?
A.Students can feel more focused on learning. B.Students can practice their computer skills.
C.No one can distract students from the courses. D.Students can choose to learn whatever they want.
33.According to Li Chunjie, taking online courses________.
A.can be beneficial in many ways B.causes a lot of distractions
C.will make students go crazy D.is harmful to students’ health

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)Alone in the wilderness. Nothing but jungle. A word of shadow with the rays of light falling like blonde hair from the crowns of the giant trees. Jungle in the middy sun. Everything motionless. Not a sound from sky or earth. Complete silence. Only some coconuts falling, very far away. The world reduced to the soft touch of cool grass along my naked back, and a sweet smell of rich soil and vegetation. Lying with closed eyes beside my heavy fruit and firewood, I enjoyed the feeling of fresh blood streaming through every part of my body and fresh jungle air filling every corner of my body.
Resting motionless, I could see the sun through my closed eyelids, alone in the sky, as lonely as I, and as motionless and silent as everything else. The earth had surely stopped turning and somewhere on this planet there was supposed to be noisy traffic in busy streets. What a crazy, unbelievable thought!
Another coconut fell, to make the world come to a complete standstill. I had to roll over onto my stomach to feel that at least I could move and make noises. Then I found company (陪伴). A little brown ant was struggling (挣扎) to find its way with a bit of dry straw (草) through the jungle of leaves and grass below my nose. I wondered if I could give the little fellow a lift with its burden (重负), but it showed not the slightest sign of tiredness and struggled on with all six legs, head first or head last, waving its feelers energetically as if the trip had just started. Who ever saw a tired ant? Tiredness, disagreeable tiredness, is impossible to hunted animals, slaves and modern man. It is as great an effort for an office to walk five blocks with a heavy brief-case as it is for a farmer to cross a valley with a goat on his back. It is as hard to get up and climb or run when you have been seated for years as it is to get up and walk when you have been in bed for months. The body is strange. Spare it, and you get really tired for almost nothing; use it, and almost nothing makes you really tired.
I rose to my feet. I had heard a horse neighing down in the valley. Above me, on the open highland places, there were wild horses. But down in the valley there was never a horse if there wasn't a man on it. Somebody was making his way up the valley and my wife was alone.
34.What's the right order of the following events?
① I heard a horse neighing down in the valley.
② I went to the jungle.
③ I found an ant carrying a bit of dry straw.
④ I lay on the ground to have a break.
⑤ I picked fruits and chopped firewood.
    A.②③⑤①④ B.⑤③②④① C.②⑤④③① D.⑤④③②①
35.How does the author feel about the ant?
A.He admired its behavior toward work.
B.He was amazed at its tireless efforts.
C.He had pity on the little ant.
D.He was happy to have its company.
36.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the writer would probably _____ .
A.work harder than before B.talk to the man on the horse
C.make his way home D.stay in the valley to enjoy the beautiful view

(2022·江苏南通·统考二模)Fear may be in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting (收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain reacts to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr. Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see-and guide whether we see fear."
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner (扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear.

(2022·江苏南通·校考二模)People can't see you when you're speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So,the way you speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have calculated that 80% of communication over the phone is through your tone of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on how to speak over the phone.
    Facial Expressions
Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example,if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite,if you have an angry look on your face,it can make you sound unpleasant.
    Volume
If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly,it'll be difficult to hear you. So,speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that you're shouting.
    Pace
The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example,an angry person might speak faster than normal.Or a downhearted person might speak very slowly.Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and it'll make it easier for the other person to understand you.
    Gestures
Gesturing can influence the tone of your voice. When you gesture, you bring more air into the lungs, which can make your voice sound warmer.Gestures are also useful to help you stress the right words or even find the words you need. The best thing about gesturing during a phone call is that no one can see what you're doing,so you can gesture as wildly as you like!
    Movement
If you're feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness in your body and help your voice to sound more confident.
    Pauses (停顿)
Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also,if you pause after giving some new information,it'll give the other person time to understand it.At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speaker's feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry,he might use pauses and says,"I…am…so…angry…"
49.What can people do to reduce their nervousness on the phone?
    A.Gesture wildly.
    B.Move around.
    C.Raise their voices.
    D.Make facial expressions.
50.How can pauses help people talk on the phone?
A.The speaker can show he is friendly.
B.The speaker can tell more information.
C.The listener will feel confident and in control.
D.The listener will have time to understand the words.
51.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to control the speed of your speech.
B.Different good ways of talking on the phone.
C.Reasons of making gestures while talking.
D.How to improve communication among friends.
52.What is the writer's opinion about telephone talk?
A.Your voice on the phone will show what you're feeling.
B.Using too many pauses while talking will annoy others.
C.Speaking loudly makes it easier for others to understand you.
D.The words you use are more important than the way you speak.

(2022·江苏南通·校考二模)China says 16 endangered finless porpoises(江豚)have been found dead since the beginning of the year and experts blame water pollution and climate change for pushing the species toward extinction.
The freshwater porpoise-popularly known in Chinese as the"river pig"-mainly lives in China's Yangtze River and two lakes linked to the river.
Authorities(官方)have discovered 10dead porpoises in Dongting Llake in the central province of Hunan since March, according to a statement by the government of Yueyang City, which is located on the lake's shore. Another six dead porpoises have been found in Poyang Lake in the eastern province of Jiangxi since the beginning of the year. Experts warn that the species will be extinct within a matter of years.
Wang Kexiong, a researcher at China's Institute of Hydrobiology, said water pollution, shipping and sand dredging(挖掘)were all possible contributing factors to the recent deaths.
Many rivers in China have become heavily polluted with poisonous waste from factories and farms-pollution blamed on more than three decades of rapid economic growth and slow enforcement(实施)of environmental protection laws.
The report said climate change also could be to blame as the dry weather has caused water levels to drop and makes it more difficult for the porpoises to find food. Tests have shown that some of the porpoises are believed to have died of starvation(饥饿).
In 2006, China was estimated(估计)to have only 1,200 finless porpoises left. That same year, the Baiji-a freshwater dolphin also native to the Yangtze River-was declared extinct. Earlier this year, a survey found just 65"river pigs"in Dongting Lake and 300-400 in Poyang Lake.
Following the recent deaths, Yueyang City promised to investigate and increase protection of the remaining porpoises in Donting Lake.

(2022·江苏南通·校考二模)In the western Pacific Ocean lies the deepest place on the planet — the Mariana Trench, which runs as deep as about 7 miles below the ocean’s surface. That’s greater than the height of Mount Everest measuring about 5 and a half miles above sea level.
The Mariana Trench is home to a variety of sea life. Coral reefs and underwater volcanoes are all found there. But because few humans have been able to go far into the trench, scientists know little about it.
Now they are working to change that. Recently, the Okeanos Explorer has been on an exploration there. Remotely operated vehicles sent out from it are taking videos of life in its deepest, darkest areas. Scientists around the world, along with the general public, can watch the videos in real time. These videos are showing the most mysterious parts of the ocean. Much of the area that the Okeanos Explorer is exploring has been protected since 2009 as part of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. Covering more than 95,000 square miles, it is one of the world’s largest marine protected areas.
It’s very dark, so the animals must use many other senses other than sight to understand their surroundings, find food and escape from enemies. The water is also very cold — slightly above freezing — and its pressure is extremely high. That means only certain animals can live there, like shrimp, crabs, and starfish.
So far, the expedition’s cameras have filmed a variety of rarely seen deep-sea creatures, including ghost sharks, huge lobsters, and sea pigs. Perhaps the most amazing sight is beautiful red jellyfish that scientists have never seen before.
Scientists hope this expedition will help them unlock the mysteries of the Mariana Trench. They’ll learn about the deep-sea animals and plants found there. They’ll also study its unique features, including underwater mountains, mud volcanoes, and hot springs produced by the volcanoes.
They say that this knowledge will also help scientists better understand how the deepest part of the ocean affects the rest of the world. "The ocean plays a role in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the transportation of the goods we buy — not to mention the weather and climate change," a scientist said. "The deep sea may also hold cures for diseases. How will we know what is out there if we aren’t looking into it?"

59.What is implied in the scientist’s words in the last paragraph?
A.He feels proud of what they have done for humans.
B.It’s worthwhile to take effort to explore the Mariana Trench.
C.Scientists should spend more time studying the oceanic climate.
D.There’re many challenges for the scientists to explore the ocean.

(2022·江苏南通·校考二模)Many of us feel uneasy when someone stands too close to us, talks to us too loudly or makes eye contact(接触) with us for too long. But have you ever wondered why those things make you uncomfortable?
It’s all about personal peace, which means not only an imaginary space around the body, but also the space around all the senses. People feel that their space is being violated(侵犯) when they meet with an unwelcome sound, smell or look. This is probably why a man on a crowded bus shouting into his mobile phone or a woman next to you putting on strong perfume(香水) makes you feel angry.
Whether people have had a stronger wish to protect their personal space in recent times is hard to say. Yet studies of airlines show that people have a strong desire(渴望) to have space to themselves. In a survey by TripAdvisor, a travel website, people said that if they had to pay more for some extra service, they would rather have larger seats than extra food.
Although people may need their personal space, some hardly realize it. For example, people on a bus who hold newspapers in front of their faces to read in fact keep a distance from strangers.
Go and watch a library table. You will notice that one of the corner seats will usually be taken first, because they are the farthest way. What if someone sits opposite to you? Maybe you will pile up books as if to make a wall.
Preference(偏好) for personal space are different from culture to culture. Scientists have found that Americans generally prefer more personal space than people from other cultures. In Latin(拉丁人的) cultures, however, people are more comfortable standing close to each other.
64.The writer mainly _________ in this article.
A.tells us how to achieve personal space
B.explains why people need personal space
C.introduces some knowledge about personal space
D.argues for the importance of keeping personal space
65.Who might feel his personal space is safe according to the passage?
A.A person who has to sit next to a lady putting on strong perfume.
B.A person who has been watched by a stranger for a long time.
C.A person who hears strange noises when reading at home.
D.A Latin boy who is chatting with a friend sitting close to him.
66.What can we know from the survey by TripAdvisor?
A.People need a smaller personal space in recent times than before.
B.People have a strong desire for personal space in recent times.
C.There are not enough seats on the plane to meet people’s needs.
D.Food service is better provided than seats on the plane.
67.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The space around the body is more needed than that around all the senses.
B.If you hold newspapers on the bus, your personal space won’t be violated.
C.People usually choose the corner seats first in a library for personal space.
D.Different cultures share the same preferences for personal space.
