(2022·江苏苏州·星海实验中学校考二模)“We said no to the invitation to the birthday party because my child says they’re not even friends.”
When I read the above words, I felt heartache.
I know birthday parties can be like a trouble, but let’s believe the parents who sent that invitation weren’t trying to get more gifts for their kids or make things more complicated.
For some kids, managing school and friends is easy. Maybe you have a child who’s outgoing, self-confident or maybe you have a child who doesn’t have any problems. However, for some kids, school and friends can be very difficult.
A birthday party is a fun, exciting and good opportunity. It is a chance for the kid on the sidelines to play with other kids who don’t play with him/her at school or who don’t call him/her a friend.
Sometimes even when the birthday party and the theme have been decided on and the difficult decision about whom to invite has been made, there can still be doubts. Those invitations can stay untouched in the bottom of the child’s backpack for days, because he/she is too scared to hand them out.
I don’t know your child, and I don’t know you. I do know there are parents who lie awake at night wondering if their child will have the courage to hand out the invitations in the morning; I do know there are parents who hope they can depend on other parents to teach their children to be kind enough to show up. Maybe you’ll never have to be one of the parents who find it hard. I know what that’s like, because I have children who find it easy. But I also have a child who doesn’t. And because of that, we’ve become a family that says yes to every invitation we receive.
Sometimes a birthday party invitation is not just a birthday party invitation; it’s also an invitation to be a friend.

(2022·江苏苏州·星海实验中学校考二模)What do you want to be when you grow up? My answer has always been a vet.
We didn’t have pets growing up because my mother was scared of animals. She transferred (转移) some of this fear to me. It’s not common you find someone who’s scared of animals but wants to be a vet. Still, I knew this is what I wanted.
Vet school was nothing like I had imagined. Within the first few weeks, any fears I had about being a vet vanished. In the fourth year, we were introduced to surgery. I loved it. Stitching (缝) wounds was like a satisfying game of Tetris (俄罗斯方块), where all the pieces fit beautifully together to make something broken whole again. It solidified (使坚固) my belief that this was the right fit for me.
These were the most challenging and rewarding two years of my life, and before I knew it, they were over. I was officially a veterinary surgeon (兽医). Surprisingly, I felt empty after I finished. Why wasn’t I excited to move on? I had completely forgotten to think about what comes next. I felt as if I had spent the last decade of my life writing exams and working crazy hours only to come out on the other side, completely clueless.
There were so many options to choose from. I could start a clinic, work at another practice or even pursue further studies. It was my father who suggested I travel to gain some perspective. I hesitantly decided to spend some time in New Zealand with my aunt who also happens to be a vet.
New Zealand was beautiful! I finally had a chance to think about what I wanted. One of the vets there allowed me to observe their practice. Working with vet nurses really stood out for me. We don’t have vet nurses in India! It is a blessing to have such experienced and dedicated individuals as a part of your support system. After a whole year of what felt like aimless wandering, this experience helped me decide I wanted to work overseas.
So, to all the other confused vets out there who haven’t figured things out: It’s completely okay to feel confused! Most people feel the same way at some point in their careers. Don’t be afraid to try new things even if you feel difficult or impossible.

6.What does the underlined word “vanished” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Erupted. B.Disappeared. C.Increased. D.Realized.
7.How did the author feel after she graduated as a real vet?
A.Lost. B.Ashamed. C.Confident. D.Excited.
8.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Different people have different dream jobs.
B.How the author became a vet with the help of her aunt.
C.By traveling abroad, people can broaden their knowledge circles.
D.People will find what they really want if they are brave enough to try.

(2022·江苏苏州·苏州市振华中学校校考二模)Fiona McIntyre is a taxi driver in London. She tells us about her work and some of her experiences.
Q: When did you start?
I’ve been a taxi driver for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed it, but I wanted more freedom so I changed and started driving my taxi.
Q: Have you ever had any famous passengers?
Oh yes. I’ve had film stars, politicians, you know, lots of famous people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to the airport. We were stuck on the way and it took a long time to get there, so he missed his plane and failed to meet his fans. It wasn’t my mistake but when he got out of the taxi, he shouted at me angrily! I said to him, ‘Next time, take a bus!”
Q: Have passengers ever left anything in your taxi?
Oh yes! People have left all kinds of things—a suitcase, a hat, mobile phones, of course, even a dog once! Years ago, a woman left a pair of shoes on the seat. And one time a passenger let his teeth here! Not real teeth, of course—false teeth.
And people have asked me to do some strange jobs. Once a doctor stopped me outside a hospital and asked me to take a skeleton to another hospital. Professors usually use skeletons to teach medical students, you know. And I did. But I asked him to pay first—the skeleton couldn’t pay after all!
Q: What do you think is the worst part of your job?
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part—waiting.
15.The famous actor missed his plane because ________.
A.Fiona didn’t drive well B.Fiona wasn’t very polite
C.there were too many fans D.there was too much traffic
16.The underlined (划线的) word “him” in Fiona’s answer to the third question refers to ________.
A.the skeleton B.the doctor C.the professor D.the student
17.According to the interview, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.Fiona has worked as a taxi driver since five years ago.
B.Sometimes passengers may leave their pets in Fiona’s taxi.
C.Fiona prefers just waiting to driving around without a passenger.
D.Fiona doesn’t think that the famous actor was polite.
(2022·江苏苏州·苏州市振华中学校校考二模)If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable for you.
Some scientists at Ohio State University, the U.S., have found that sad movies can make people happier. They published their study in a magazine called Communication Research.
Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated. They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.
According to the result of the survey, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships. Compared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.
“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad, but that will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value them more.”

C.Feeling Bad? See a Happy Film

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)China is a country having the largest population in the world, with more than 1.4 billion people. However, it’s shown that China’s birth rate(率) is dropping. Although the government has tried to encourage people to have more children, China’s birth rate in 2021 was the lowest it’s been since 1949.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (国家统计局) of China, 10.62 million babies were born in 2021, a birth rate of 7.52 per 1, 000 people. This is down from a rate of 8.52 per 1, 000 people in 2020. The 2021 birth rate is also almost equal to the year’s death rate; 10.14 million deaths were recorded, a rate of 7.18 per 1000.
This means the natural growth rate of the population was just 0.34 per 1, 000 people. It is the lowest since China’s Great Famine(饥荒)from 1959 to 1961, which killed about 30 million people and caused a population decline.
Ning Jizhe of the National Bureau of Statistics told state media some of the reasons for the decline in births are that people’s opinions about having children have changed, birth rates are dropping, and young people are taking longer to get married. Also, the high cost of living in cities is discouraging couples from having more children.
Another problem is that the population is aging faster than expected. China’s working-age population is already dropping, which will put stress on the country’s ability to pay and care for an increasingly elderly country. This suggests China’s total population may have reached its peak(顶点)in 2021. It also shows China’s population growth is likely slowing faster than expected.
To increase birth rates, the Chinese government ended its “one child” rule in 2016. In 2021, couples would be allowed to have up to three children.
28.What was China’s birth rate in 2020?
A.7.52 per 1000 people. B.8.52 per 1000 people.
C.7.18 per 1000 people. D.0.34 per 1000 people.
29.What does the underlined word “decline” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Change. B.Fall. C.Rise. D.Level.
30.Which may be a reason for China’s dropping birth rate according to Ning Jizhe?
A.The cost of living in cities is high. B.Young people no longer get married.
C.Having children changes people’s ideas. D.There are too many old people to care for.
31.Which of the following can solve the problem with birth rate?
A.Keep carrying out the “one-child” rule. B.Slow down the population aging process.
C.Encourage couples to have more children. D.Increase China’s working-age population.
(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)One pipe (烟斗) in Mr. Dow’s store caught Joey’s eye. He imagined some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like this one. He looked around. Nobody was looking. He put the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it.
Suddenly he heard footsteps behind him. He turned around quickly. It was Mr. Dow, the store owner. “Hello, Joey,” Mr. Dow said. Joey struggled (挣扎) to answer but only smiled weakly as Mr. Dow walked away. Did Mr. Dow see the pipe in his hand? Joey’s thoughts became unclear. He watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store.

In the film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying: “Life is like a box of chocolate; you never know what you’re gonna get.” It’s the same with blind boxes.
Each of these small, sealed (密封的) boxes contains one of many toys in a series. The buyer doesn’t know which one they’ve gotten until they open the package. In recent years it becomes big business in China.
During the Double 11 shopping day, Pop Mart, a leading blind box company in China, sold 55,000 Labubu dolls on Tmall in just 9 seconds, according to a Tmall report.
One reason for their popularity is the appealing (诱人的) appearance inside the boxes. They’re like small cartoon characters. They can be placed anywhere in your home as a decoration. But another, perhaps more important reason people like them is the fun of being surprised.
“The most interesting thing about blind boxes is the gap between what you expect and what you get,” said wen Xi, a blind box collector from Beijing.

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind? For Alison Jenson, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Alison was a shopaholic. She just couldn’t stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Alison’s bedroom is full of stuff. “I’ve been to every shop in Birmingham, I think,” says Alison. She picks up some earrings. The labels are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I’ve never won them.” Alison’s problem wasn’t just jewellery. She also bought a lot of clothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She has also bought lots of other small things-like 20 new covers for her phone. She hasn’t used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it’s a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they’ve made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists(心理学家) first described the problems of shopaholics in 1915. However, there was very little research on the subject until recently. Now, doctors think thousands of people suffer from the problem, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don’t have enough money to go shopping very regularly.
Alison knew she had a problem. “I often bought something every day. Usually it was something small, but I just needed to buy it,” she says. “I spent money that I got for my birthday, and when I was short of cash, I borrowed money from friends or my parents. When I couldn’t go shopping, I felt anxious. Then one day, my parents just looked at all the stuff in my room and said, ‘This is crazy!’I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Alison now gets help with her problem and feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she’s a shopaholic. “When I want to buy something in a shop, I ask myself two questions,” she says. “Do I need it? Can I afford it? The answer to both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’s great!”

D.Shopping is the only way shopaholics can feel happy.
45.The best title for the passage above might be ________.

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Walking towards the house slowly, Emma stopped to cut off fading flowers or dead leaves now and then. There were few weeds (杂草). Yuki had spent many hours of her two-week visit weeding in the garden. Emma wondered if Yuki had spent so much of her time outside because she wanted to avoid talking to her.
But Yuki must have wanted very much to see us, Emma told herself. She had visited in the last weeks of June, as soon as her college was out for the summer.
She said she wanted to stay longer but couldn’t because she had to work. Moreover, she needed to use the studio at her college for photography and she had to go to the library to read.
“Why do you have to go to college to study art?” Emma asked her. “All the great artists didn’t go to college.”
Yuki shook her head. “That was a different time. It’s hard to explain.”
“I was thinking you could live with us all year round and still be an artist. This is a nice quiet place to live.”
“I don’t know. How would I support myself here?” “You can always give lessons.” Emma said.
“But I don’t want to spend a long time looking at kids’ drawings.”
“What will you do after you graduate, anyway? Will you become a teacher somewhere else then?”
“Grandma, I don’t know.” Yuki sighed.
“What is the use of going to college if you don’t know what you’re going there for?” “Maybe I’m going because I don’t know. I just want to study art now. I don’t want to think that far ahead.”
The minute Emma was going to point out that this was too careless a way to live, Yuki suddenly stood up and put on her straw hat.
“I’m going to the garden to weed your flowerbed,” she said, “Let me know if there’s something else I can do.”
On Yuki’s visit, Emma felt strained when they talked, and she was sure Yuki also felt it. But Yuki was never rude or irritable (易怒的). Even when they disagreed, her face was always full of patience.

Visiting outer space is still a far dream for anyone who isn’t an astronaut, but a day trip to the stars is already open for people to order!
A new company (公司), Space Perspective, is planning tests with passengers. It has big plans to run up to 500 flights from different places across the USA by 2024. If successful, reaching the outer side of space could be as easy as flying abroad in a few years’ time. The plan will be for spacemen and up to eight passengers to travel in Neptune, a capsule (太空舱) tied to a balloon the size of a football field.
They will move slowly upwards right to the side of space, 30 km away from the Earth. There, space tourists will be able to look back at the Earth and out to dark space and the sight of millions of stars. Although the price is yet to be fixed, the expensive flight, which will take six hours, is likely to cost over £100, 000. Because the capsule remains within the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层), no special clothing or training are needed. It means that older people or those with health problems will be included.
One problem may be the method of landing back on the Earth. The balloon moves back down from space until it falls down in the sea. Passengers, spacemen, capsule and balloon are then gotten back by ship.
Now Neptune faces competition from the Stratollite, a balloon being developed by a company called World View Enterprises, while the super-rich Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are all pouring money into developing business space flying machines. The advantage of the balloon is that it will be cheaper than a space plane or rocket.
Space travel may soon be a reality (现实), but how visitors get there is still a very open question.
49.We can see from the passage that Space Perspective ________.
A.has completed over 500 tests B.makes it easier for us to fly abroad
C.has quite a long history D.wants to use Neptune to carry people
50.According to Space Perspective’s plan, space tourists ________.
A.should wear special clothing B.can watch the Earth from space
C.will land back on the ground D.must keep in good health
51.The writer implies (暗示) in the passage that ________.
A.the race to get tourists into space is becoming hot
B.there will be only four ways for visitors to reach space
C.the Stratollite is popular with space passengers
D.Richard, Jeff and Elon are all short of money

(2022·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校联考二模)“True friendship is like sound health. The value of it is seldom known until it is lost,” Charles Caleb Colton said. Just like in any other relationship, arguments and fights are also part of friendship. You will hardly find friends who have never fought with one another. Whatever the reason is, if a person feels that he is responsible for causing the differences, it is important that he should say sorry to his friend.
Though you can use the email, text messages or chat for expressing your apology, the good old way of saying sorry to your friend through a letter will surely have a great effect on him. This will make your friend realize that your efforts of saying sorry are genuine and that you really care about him.
Points to Remember:
Timing: Write the letter at the proper time. It is not advisable to put it off for too long.
Words: While you are writing the letter, what matters most is that you truly feel sorry.
Sequence (顺序): Always begin by apologizing and saying sorry for your mistake. Then explain to him your side of the story. In the third and last paragraph, talk about what his friendship means to you and make a promise of not repeating the mistake.
Delivery: You should either post the letter or deliver it personally or through someone else. You can also keep it at a location where your friend will be able to find it easily.
Some people may try to point out the friend’s mistake while writing the letter. Avoid this completely, as it can make matters worse. The letter has to be brief and should only talk about the subject that has led to your apology. Keep patient and do not expect immediate results. In some cases, it may take time for the person to forgive and forget.

(2022·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校联考二模)My father and I were both angry. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted my father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out to the street.
I walked aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I seemed to see my childhood from another space: happy.
But now. I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old. We have different ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I walked in the streets. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the building where I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself, “Is my father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, my dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except my father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking me underneath the covers while I am sleeping.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe … With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that there wasn’t the iron door that I had imagined between us at all. Love—it’s second to none.

(2022·江苏苏州·苏州市平江中学校校联考二模)Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife scientist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Oddity and 14 others were raised in a reserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released (释放) into the wild. Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. Devils also eat animals such as wallabies, wombats, and possums, helping to keep those populations balanced.
But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species (物种). The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife reserves. This means if the facial disease causes the Tasmanian devils to die out in the wild, devils like Oddity can be sent back into disease-free areas of Tasmania, giving devils a chance to survive.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading. Oddity started his new life on Maria Island. Life on this island off the coast of Tasmania was a big change for Oddity and the others. These devils had little experience with other kinds of animals and had to explore the land and find new bones. Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. They are doing well on Maria Island, and the plan is considered a success.
Wise says he is “extremely happy to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD.It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve endangered species.”
60.Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils like Oddity to Maria Island?
A.To prevent DFTD killing Tasmanian devils out.
B.To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C.To control the DFTD spread on mainland Tasmania.
D.To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
61.What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release?
A.Its rich wildlife. B.Its geographic location.
C.Its natural resources. D.Its improved ecosystem.
62.How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life?
A.Their safety was uncertain. B.Their number was going up.
C.They hardly enjoyed freedom. D.They got well again from DFTD.
63.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A program studying Tasmanian devils. B.A disease attacking Tasmanian devils.
C.A step to save Tasmanian devils. D.A perfect place for Tasmanian devils.

Over the past years, 98-year-old Xia Sen has given away most of her personal savings to help students from poor families in Danfeng, Shaanxi, and Shangyou, Jiangxi get an education.
Born in 1923, Xia was only 15 years old when she became a teacher in Yan’an. While teaching she kept learning. Years later, she went to work as a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
In 2006, Xia visited Xijie Primary School in Danfeng. The school was old and in bad condition. That made her very sad. She spent 20,000 yuan buying desks and books for the students.
In 2008, she took out 200,000 yuan and helped Zhaogou Primary School in Danfeng build a classroom building. It is a building with eight bright and clean classrooms, which is a complete change from what their old classrooms looked like.
Five years later, Xia used 1 million yuan of her savings to set up the “Xia Sen Scholarship (夏森助学金)” to help high school and college students from poor families in Danfeng and Shangyou. So far, at least 182 students have gotten help from the scholarship to pay for their education.
Some students who got Xia’s scholarship went to Xia’s home to visit her in 2018. To their surprise, Xia and her husband led a very simple life. “I was moved by Granny Xia and her husband,” one student said.

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Do you know 5G? It is the fifth generation (代) of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China just issued commercial licenses (发放商用牌照) for 5G on June 6. This means that China’s telecom companies were soon able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What’s special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G+entertainment (娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can dowload a movie in seconds using 5G.
Also, virtual reality (VR) games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G+transportation
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals (信号) to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors (传感器). 5G will allow cars to react even faster than human drivers.
5G+smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
For example, your toaster can automatically (自动地) start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if its sensor feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler could water your plants by itself.
73.What does the underlined word “delay” in Paragraph 4 probably mean in Chinese?.
A.延时 B.暂停 C.断开 D.卡顿
74.5G will change people’s lives in many ways EXCEPT ________.
A.entertainment B.transportation C.smart homes D.health
75.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Mobile phone users can use 5G networks. B.Each mobile network generation has their own advantages.
C.5G will change our lives in many ways. D.5G will bring us safer self-driving cars.

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Yes, you read that right: plants that dance. It’s true. I’ve seen them! Udon Thani is a province in northeast Thailand. There are no big cities there and not as many tourist attractions as there are in other parts of the country. But there is one small plant nursery (苗圃) with one of the most amazing but little-known sights in the world: simple, green plants that look like common weeds (野草).
These special dancing plants area hybrid of the Thani Gyrant and the Chinese Gyrant—the pure parents can’t dance as well as their hybrid child. The scientific name of this type of plant is Codariocalyx motorius (舞草).
Let’s go back to the dancing. Walk through the nursery, and we see many bright, eye-catching plants. Deep in the center of the nursery, is a row of these green weeds. These are the dancing plants. “Stand in front of them and sing,” the nursery worker says.
At first it feels silly to sing to a plant. I sing quietly and shyly, and nothing happens. I think about leaving, but I make myself stay and sing longer. Slowly, the plants start opening and closing their little leaves. The longer and louder I sing, the more they move. When I stop, they stop. I test to see if my breath is making the leaves blow—nope. They’re moving because I’m making a sound. It’s unimaginable to communicate with a plant this way. It makes me think very deeply about the ways all living things are alive. Perhaps we’re more connected with the plant world than we think we are.
Why the plant dances is still a mystery—just another sign that we still have a lot to learn about our world.
78.According to the passage, where can the dancing plants be found?
A.Northeast Thailand. B.Southern China. C.Japan. D.Southern Thailand.

At nine o’clock that night Encyclopedia climbed into bed. He lay awake for a long time. He thought over what his mother had said to him about being a detective when he grew up. In the morning he made up his mind.
He would go into the detective business and help people. He wouldn’t wait until he grew up. It was summer and school was out. He could begin at once.
Encyclopedia got out of bed and searched through his closet. He dug out a toy printing press, a Christmas gift from his Uncle Ben two years ago.

Throughout its long history, writing has been a big deal in China. Since the earliest dynasties, the skills of reading and writing have been highly respected. In fact, they form an important part of the Chinese art world. Calligraphy(书法), the art of writing with a brush, is almost as old as writing itself. And though this art form dates back thousands of years, it is still very popular today.
________ The answer most likely lies way back in the Shang Dynasty(about 1600-1046 BC). That’s when characters were first used in religious(宗教的)events. This practice showed a spiritual part which gave writing power in the eyes of common people.
Calligraphy spread during the Han Dynasty, when the, necessary tools and materials were more easily got. First there was the brush, made from bamboo and animal hair. Early ink was made by burning pinewood(松木)and mixing it with water. Early forms of paper were invented around AD105. Finally, there was inkstone, a smooth piece of stone used for mixing ink. Together, these tools were known as the “four treasures of study” in ancient China.
Calligraphy has been popular in China for thousands of years. Some say that it’s an even higher art form than painting. Though foreigners may not always get it, there’s something truly special about calligraphy. Every written character has a strict stroke(笔划)order. When viewing the results, you can experience every stroke of the artist’s brush. This allows for a close connection between artists and viewers. Calligraphy is something that’s best experienced by doing. Luckily, this ancient art is still widely practiced today. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and find yourself a teacher!

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,
Happy day! I’ve just finished my last examination—Biology. And now:
Three months on a farm!
I don’t know what kind of a thing a farm is. I’ve never been on one in my life. I’ve never even looked at one(except from the car window), but I know I’m going to love it, and I’m going to love being free.
I am not used even yet to being outside the John Grier Home. Whenever I think of it, excited little thrills(心神不定) rise up all over my back. I feel like I must run faster and faster and keep looking over my shoulder to make sure that Mrs. Lippett isn’t after me with her arms open wide in order to pull me back.
I don’t have to mind anyone this summer, do I?
Your so-called power doesn’t worry me in the least; you are too far away to do any harm. Mrs. Lippett will not be in my life any more, so far as I know, and the Semples aren’t expected to give me extra moral(有关道德的) lessons on the farm, are they? No, I am sure not. I am completely grown up. Hooray!
I leave you now to pack my big suitcase, and three boxes of teacups and dishes and sofa cushions and books.
Yours ever,
Judy

(2022·江苏苏州·统考二模)China’s Grand Canal
For centuries, the power of Chinese emperors rose and fell with their control of the Grand Canal. Today, this waterway is shorter than it once was, but it is still the longest man-made river in the world. Importantly, the Grand Canal continues to provide a necessary cultural and economic(经济的) link for modern China.
The first canal system began around the year 605. China’s Emperor Yang realized that he needed a better way to feed his army. Specifically, he needed a way to move food quickly from China’s southern rice-growing area to the country’s north. So, the emperor ordered the building of the first section of the Grand Canal, connecting canals, lakes, and rivers. About one million people—mostly farmers—worked on the big project, which took six years.
In addition to moving rice around China, the Grand Canal was an important cultural conduit. Soldiers, businessmen, and artists transported ideas, local foods, and cultural practices from one part of China to another. According to some old stories, this is how Beijing got two of the best-known symbols. Peking duck, a dish from Shandong Province, and the Peking opera, from Anhui and Hubei areas, were both brought north through the canal.
For more than a thousand years, goods have been transported along the Grand Canal. Even today, the country’s watery highway plays an important economic role in China. Boats continue to carry tons of coal, food, and other goods to points between Hangzhou and Jining—now the northernmost city the canal reaches.
In 2014, the historic Grand Canal was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site(联合国教科文组织世界遗产地). It is hoped that the Grand Canal—one of the world’s great engineering achievements—will continue to link north and south China for centuries to come.
90.Why was the Grand Canal first built?
A.To enable more people to visit rice-growing parts of China.
B.To let the army move quickly from the north to the south.
C.To transport food from the southern part of China to the north.
D.To develop the building skills of the farmers all over China.
91.Which of the following is closest in meaning to conduit(Paragraph 3)?
A.Connection. B.Conversation. C.Conclusion. D.Contribution.
92.According to the passage, why has the Grand Canal been important for China?
A.Because it’s the world’s longest man-made river.
B.Because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
C.Because it is a watery highway for lots of boats.
D.Because it’s economically linked the north and south.

(2022·江苏苏州·校考二模)My dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his mom and dad and the other kids that were still at home.
Dad was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the sea for his catch. When you got close to him, you smelled the sea.
When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school in his old truck. It was older than he was. You could hear it coming from a couple of blocks away. On the way, I would shrink down into(缩进) the seat hoping to disappear. He would stop right in front of the school, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was making me feel really uncomfortable! Here I was twelve years old, and my dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!
I remembered the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got to school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean towards me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way. “Dad, I’m too old for a good-bye kiss.”
My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out. “You’re right,” he said. “You are a big boy ... a man. I won’t kiss you any more.”
It wasn’t long after that when my dad went to sea and never came back. It was the day when most of the boats stayed in, but not dad.
Guys, you don’t know what I would give to have my dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek...to feel his rough old face...to smell the sea on him...to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would be a man. I would never have told my dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss.

(2022·江苏苏州·校考二模)Romeo had been in a good mood all morning. He’d had a dream that he was about to receive some good news. He was lighthearted and he walked through the streets of magic feeling that his feet weren’t touching the ground.
His dream was that Juliet had found him dead. And although it was a strange dream that allowed a dead man to think and feel, she had brought him back to life with her kisses and made him as happy as a king. He smiled as he walked. It just showed how wonderful the real thing was if even dreams about love could make you feel so good.
Wasn’t that his man, Balthazar, coming down the street? It was. It must be good news from Verona.
“Balthazar,” he said. “Have you got a letter from the Friar? How’s my wife? And my father? Is he alright?” Romeo did a little jig, dancing round his servant. “How’s Juliet? I’m asking that because if she’s well then everything is wonderful.”
Balthazar said nothing. He stared at the ground, avoiding Romeo’s eyes. Romeo stopped his dancing. Balthazar was crying.
“She’s well. So nothing can be wrong.” said Balthazar. He turned his back on Romeo and blurted, “ Her body’s sleeping in Capulet’s tomb and her soul’s among the angels.”
Romeo felt cold, even in that terrible heat. He expressed his doubt about his servant’s words.
“I watched them putting her in their family vault (墓穴),” said Balthazar, “and then came straight to you.” He saw the pain in Romeo’s face and wished he could think of some way of cheering him up.
“It can’t be!” said Romeo at last. He turned away. “The stars are against us. But I won’t give in to them!” He turned back to Balthazar. “Go and get me some paper and ink and hire us some horses.”
“I beg of you, sir,” said Balthazar, “be careful. You’re so sad and I ’m worried that something bad is going to happen.”
“You’re wrong, said Romeo.” “Just do as I tell you. Haven’t you got a letter from the Friar?”
“No.”

There are a few different kinds of hockey, including ice hockey and field hockey. One of the biggest differences between the sports is the surface on which they are played. Some suggest that field hockey has been around for thousands of years. There is evidence to support that a similar game was played by ancient people in Greece and Rome.
Ice hockey has been around, officially, since the late 1800s. This is when the rules were made by J.A.Creighton. The first league was in place by the early 1900s. Later, ice hockey became an Olympic sport.
Hockey is a team sport with six players on two opposing teams. The game is played on a rink of ice with two goals at each end. The standard rink size is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Players, all wearing ice skates, move a disk called a puck around the ice. Their purpose is to shoot the puck into the other team’s goal. The goal is a net that is six feet wide and four feet tall. Each goal is guarded by a goalie, who is the only one that can touch the puck with his hockey stick as well as any part of his body. Goalies can even use their feet to stop the puck from getting into the net.
A hockey stick is what players use to move the puck. It is usually 5 to 6 feet in length with a flat blade at the end. Hockey sticks are straight sticks made of wood. The puck is made of vulcanized (硫化的) rubber, which is a much better material than the first pucks. It’s said that the first informal hockey games were played with pucks made of frozen cow waste! The modern puck is typically one inch thick and three inches in diameter.
36 Instead, the names of the winning hockey team’s players, coaches, and managers are added to the presentation cup. There are five rings of names. The oldest ring is removed when a new one is added.
