    一、阅读单选
(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市南长实验中学校考二模)Your third year of middle school was probably a hard and busy time. You may have had trouble getting enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health. But it has been found that less sleep could even cause you to have fewer friends, the Guardian reported.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night’s sleep — as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants (参与者) watched videos of people with neutral (中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being taken up. But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Mathew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle (恶性循环).
So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. “One night of good sleep makes you feel more active and socially confident,” said Mathew Walker.

D.People who sleep well might be popular.

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市南长实验中学校考二模)Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted (闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fear.
    “Keep quiet! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said.
“It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”
The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs. Then Indian Joe started digging a hole with his knife and the knife hit something.
“What is it?” asked the other man.
“It’s a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys’ tools, and they soon pulled out the box.
“There’s thousands of dollars in there,” said Indian Joe.
“The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.
“They must have hidden their money here.”
“What will we do with this, Joe? Will we bury (埋) it again?”
“No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe. “Let’s bury it in the number two den.”
Tom and Huck got up as soon as the two men left. They decided to watch out for the “man in the sombrero” when he came to town and find out where the number two den was.

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市南长实验中学校考二模)Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet QuYuan (about 340-278BC) wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the world around us. The poem showed his doubts about traditional ideas and the spirit of finding the truth.
China has named its upcoming series of planetary exploration missions (任务) after the poem. The first one in the series – a Mars exploration mission – has been named Tianwen1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, China Space Day. This shows China’s desire to explore the universe and discover its secrets.
As early as 1970, China launched (发射) its first man-made Earth satellite, becoming the fifth country in the world to launch a man-made satellite on her own. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions and launched two space labs into Earth’s orbit (轨道). China’s moon exploration missions – the Chang’e series – started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side, which always faces away from Earth.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to launch a Mars probe this year, which will mark the start of China’s exploration of the Red Planet. The probe is expected to orbit, land on and explore Mars in one mission. If it succeeds, it will be the first to complete all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rockets will send the probe to Mars. It will take seven months to reach the planet and land.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the surface of the planet and bring it back to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several asteroids (小行星), said CNSA.
7.What do we know about the Mars exploration mission?
A.It will be the first mission of the Tianwen series.
B.China will launch a Mars probe named Long March 5.
C.China will launch the probe on Space Day.
D.The probe will be launched on a rocket built by another country.
8.The first step to the Mars exploration mission is _________.
A.to take a clear picture of Mars
    B.to design a probe
    C.to name the mission
D.to send a probe to Mars
9.The sentence “China has been making great progress in space exploration.” can be best placed in the beginning of _________.
    A.paragraph 2 B.paragraph 3 C.paragraph 4 D.paragraph 5
10.What will CNSA probably do in the future according to the last paragraph?
A.It will visit Venus and several asteroids.
B.It will collect soil from the surface of the moon.
C.It will launch other missions to Mars.
D.It will visit all of the planets in the solar system.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)The clock pointed at a quarter before nine when he appeared at the Reform Club. Phileas Fogg had finished the journey round the world in eighty days! Phileas Fogg had won his wager (打赌) of twenty thousand pounds!
How could such an exact man make this mistake of a day? Why did he think that he had arrived in London on Saturday, the twenty-first day of December, when it was really Friday, the twentieth, the seventy-ninth day only from the day he left?
The cause of the mistake was very simple.
Phileas Fogg had gained one day on his journey, because he had travelled eastward. During travelling eastward, he had gone towards the sun, and the days therefore diminished(缩短) as many times 4 minutes as he crossed degrees(经度) in this direction. There are 360 degrees on the circumference (周长) of the earth; and these 360 degrees, multiplied (乘) by 4 minutes, gives 24 hours, the day gained. In other words, while Phileas Fogg, going eastward, saw the sun pass 80 times, his friends in London only saw it 79 times. This is why they waited for him at the Club on Saturday, and not Sunday, as Mr. Fogg thought.
Phileas Fogg, then, had won the twenty thousand pounds; but as he had spent nearly nineteen thousand on the way, the gain was small. His aim was, however, not to win money. He divided the one thousand pounds between Passepartout and Fix. From Passepartout’s share, he deducted(扣除) the cost of the gas which had burned in his room for nineteen hundred and twenty hours.
The next day just after the wedding party, as soon as it was light, Passepartout knocked on his master’s door. Phileas opened it, and asked, “What’s the matter, Passepartout?”
“What is it, sir? Why, I’ve just found out —”
    “What?”
“That we might have made the tour of the world in only seventy-eight days.”
“No doubt,” said Mr. Fogg, “by not crossing India. But if I had not crossed India, I should not have saved Aouda out of danger and fell in love with her afterwards, and she would not have been my wife.”
Phileas Fogg had won his wager, and had made his journey around the world in eighty days.
Would you make the tour around the world for less than eighty days?
17.How did Fogg most probably feel after he finished the journey around the world?
A.Proud but a bit afraid. B.Excited but a bit angry.
C.Curious but a bit worried. D.Satisfied but a bit sorry.
18.Which of the following shows the right order of the whole trip?
    a. Fogg got married to Aouda.   b. Fogg’s friends gathered at the Club.
    c. Fogg started the trip around the world.     d. The group travelled across India.
    A.c-b-d-a B.b-d-a-c C.c-d-b-a D.b-c-a-d
19.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Phileas Fogg had gained one day on his journey, because he had travelled westward.
B.Phileas Fogg didn’t gain a lot though he had won the twenty thousand pounds at last.
C.Phileas Fogg paid for the cost of the gas which had burned in his room for 1920 hours.
D.Phileas Fogg’s friends in London saw the sun pass more times than Fogg.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)The term “multitasking” was firstly used to describe a computer’s ability to do several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. Although checking e-mails while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, multitasking can sometimes make us less productive(富有成效的), rather than more. Studies show that too much multitasking may bring anxiety and memory loss.
In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex(前额叶脑皮层). A research from volunteers performing multiple tasks shows that as they move from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you’ve ever dialed(拨电话) a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you dialed when the line is answered. What probably happened is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind moved to another thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. The research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency(效率) drops while multitasking, compared to when they perform only one task at a time.
Multitasking is easy when at least one of the tasks requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are tried at the same time, people sometimes make mistakes.
We often don’t remember things as well when we’re trying to manage several details at the same time. We may not notice new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory. That is one of the main reasons we forget people’s names – even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect(影响) our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may appear absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss key information being passed on to them.
20.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “anxiety”?
    A.Stress B.Development C.Death D.Confidence
21.The writing purpose of this passage is to________.
A.describe the problems of multitasking B.discover the secrets of multitasking
C.tell the stories about multitasking D.explain the importance of multitasking
22.What can we learn about multitasking?
A.It is a way of life and the only key to success. B.It can be done easily by smart people.
C.It helps build a better relationship between friends. D.It has a close connection to our brain.
23.What can we infer(推断) from the passage?
A.Multitasking helps people remember things better.
B.More mistakes are made when tasks require little thought.
C.People get low job efficiency while managing several details at the same time.
D.People forgetting who to dial need to have a good rest.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)On January 27, in order to win the new pneumonia Resistance War(抗击新型肺炎战), the Ministry of Education issued(公布) a notice on putting off the start time of school in spring 2020. It was said that school should not start before February 17. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices.
However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect children’s studies. If they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learned before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health.
In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also given a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform(平台), where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network. It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection(感染) of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.
Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus and other knowledge popularization; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.
27.Except for learning at home, what is also necessary according to the writer?
A.To keep playing online games. B.To keep touching different people.
C.To do some physical exercises outside. D.To teach children about health knowledge.
28.The underlined word “suspension” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
    A.plan B.stop C.growth D.change
29.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.A Special Way to Learn at Home B.A New War with a New Chance
C.A Way to Keep Mentally Healthy D.A Method to Make Parents Worried

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

A.George felt afraid and nervous. B.George felt happy and lucky.
C.George really wanted to stay there. D.George didn’t want to lie to him.
32.Which of these old sayings best fits this story?
A.It never rains but it pours. B.Every dog has its day.
C.Burn the candle at both ends. D.Many hands make light work.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment(失业) from your computer major(专业课) classmates, you may have had the last laugh. There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech “Information Age” requires people who are flexible(灵活的) and who have good communication skills.
There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions.
For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial(管理的) success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Studies show that social science majors are most suitable for change, which is the leading feature(特点) of the kind of high-speed, high-pressure, high-tech world we now live in.
Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level (入门的) positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most important quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as “very important”, by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably because of these skills that they have been offered different kinds of positions.
Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study.

Your Internet experience must be uncomfortable when the net speed is too slow — it takes so long to open a web page and the reality shows you’re watching stops every few minutes. That can make you angry.
But it could be a thing of the past. On June 3, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China’s major telecom carriers (电信公司) would start to provide 5G services.
    1. What is 5G?
The “G” in “5G” refers to “Generation”. 1G let us talk to each other, 2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data and the Internet, and 4G made all of these things faster. The mobile network technologies are developing quickly.
Now 5G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable (稳定的) connections. This means that you will be able to download a complete HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay (延迟) between sending and receiving data.
2.What changes will 5G bring us?
With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable devices (设备) will be in use in hospitals. Besides,VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
    3. Does 5G have any disadvantages?
According to the BBC, though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing,  1          . On 4G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission base and hardly lose signal (信号). But 5G will only cover about 300 meters. And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new products designed for 5G that are expensive at present.
40.“G” in “5G” means the generation of________.
A.the mobile network experience B.the mobile communication technology

Portia gave the decision. “One pound of the merchant’s (商人) flesh (肉) is yours. It is what the contract (合同) says. You may take his flesh!”
Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready. “Wait!” exclaimed Portia. “You will not do anything that is not written in the contract. Is that right, Shylock?”
“Yes, that’s right,” said Shylock. He wondered what the wise young judge was going to say. “Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood. It says ‘a pound of flesh’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke (公爵) will take everything you own!”
Now it was Graziano’s turn to bless the judge and call him wise.
“You wanted justice (公平),” Portia told Shylock, “and you’ll have more justice than you wanted.”
Shylock didn’t want to give everything he owned to the duke. He decided not to take his pound of flesh. He said he would take the money.
“Give me ninety thousand dollars,” he said, “and I will have pity on Antonio and let him go.”
Bassanio was happy to give him the money. He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.
“Wait!” Portia said again. “He does not want the money. It is not written in the contract.”
Shylock  said  he  just wanted  to have  his  money back  and wouldn’t even  need interest. Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but again Portia stopped him.
“He said he only wanted the thing written in the contract.”
Shylock understood that he would not get his pound of flesh. He understood that he would not get his money. He decided to go home.
“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time. “The law of Venice, says that if you plan to kill a citizen of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to the person you tried to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke.”

Have you stroked (抚摸) a cute dog recently? If that dog touched you with its nose, you might find how wet and cold it was. If dogs are so warm and fluffy (毛茸茸 的), then why are their noses so cold?
Before, people thought that dogs had cold noses to help them control their body temperature. But, a new study in the journal Scientific Reports has shown some interesting findings about dogs’ noses. The study found that when the air temperature was 30 ℃, the tip of a dog’s nose is about five degrees cooler than the air. But why is this?
The researchers believed that the tip of a dog’s nose has a special sensory function (探测功 能). So, they did an experiment to test it. The study showed that dogs could find weak heat sources—like a small animal—with their noses from 1.5 meters away.
The research team studied three dogs named Charlie, Delfi and Kevin. For the experiment, the dogs had to tell the difference between two objects. The two objects were heated to different temperatures. Amazingly, all three dogs were able to sense the temperature difference between both objects.
The study also found that the heat from the objects in the experiment “was too weak to be felt by human hands, even at very short distances”. The dogs were able to sense these heated objects from a distance, but humans were only able to feel the warmth of the object if they touched it.
To know more about it, the research team also studied the brain activity of 13 dogs. When a warm object was put near their noses, there was an increase in brain activity.
“From the two complementary (互补的) experiments, we can know that dogs are indeed able to sense heat from warm-blooded animals, and a special region of the brain is made to be active by such heat.” said Anna Balint, the leader of the study.
46.What did the new study published in the journal Scientific Reports find about dogs?
A.What makes dogs loyal. B.Why dogs have cold noses.
C.How dogs feel heat better. D.How a dog’s temperature influences its brain activity.
47.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “region”?
    A.Way. B.Area. C.Type. D.Change.
48.What happened to the dogs when a warm object was put near their noses?
A.They showed no change in their brain activity. B.They had different kinds of excitement.
C.Their brain activity slowed down. D.Their brains became more active.
49.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Heat sensing ability can help dogs hunt for food.
B.The tip of a dog’s nose has a special sensory function.
C.Dogs are smarter than other animals.
D.The two experiments found different results.

Turn off your laptop before you do any cleaning. Even though you won’t be putting water directly onto your laptop, you should turn off the power to make sure nothing gets damaged if a little moisture does get inside.
Turn the laptop upside down and gently tap or shake it. This will remove big pieces of dirt, crumps (碎屑) or other debris (碎片) that’s hiding in your keyboard.
Tip:  It may help to spread a towel under the laptop before you shake it, to make cleanup easier.
Spay between the keys with compressed air to remove dust. The air of the force will blow the dust that’s trapped between and under the keys.
Remove dirt with a cotton ball and alcohol (酒精). Alcohol evaporates (蒸发)quickly, making it a safe alternative to using water on your laptop. Alcohol is especially good at removing the dirt left by your fingers. In addition, alcohol is good at removing germs (细菌).

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市天一实验学校校考二模)We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, around by people who are, like us, deeply look at their smartphones or, worse, fighting with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem? It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s challenging, or we think it’s unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big advantages.
Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to look for an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their waiter reported higher positive (积极的) feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband.” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging (归属感), a relationship with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners.” he says.

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m taking part in the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy and Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”
I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep on the way!”
“He must have wished that,” Sonny said. “Otherwise how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”
“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted, “He won the race by perseverance(坚持), by pushing on steadily.”
Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市天一实验学校校考二模)You’ve probably never seen a movie quite like this one. Loving Vincent is the world’s first hand-painted animated movie. It is made fully with paintings. Every scene was created using oil paint on canvas(画布). Twelve paintings were needed just to show one second of the movie. If a character turns their head, the head and shoulders will be taken off the main painting and redrawn to show movement. It took more than 100 artists seven years to complete it.
The movie has gotten good reviews since it came out on the Chinese mainland on Dec. 8. Its box office (票房) has reached over $20 million(132.43 million yuan) worldwide, according to Variety.
The film tells the story of the final months of famous Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). The story is told through his paintings and the characters in them. It shows his death as being part of a murder mystery, as Hollywood Reporter said.
A young man named Armand Roulin serves as both detective and storyteller. A year after the death of Vincent van Gogh, Armand is instructed by his father, Postman Joseph Roulin, to personally send a letter to Vincent’s brother, Theo. Armed isn’t fond of Van Gogh, but to satisfy his father he agrees to give the letter, traveling across Europe to the town where Vincent spent his final months. When he finds that Theo has died of a disease shortly after his brother, he visits several important people in Van Gogh’s life to find out the truth behind his death. He talks with Van Gogh’s friend, a doctor, and the owner of the hotel he lived in. But each person tells a different story.
There are many examples of the artist’s work in the movie. It shows over 120 of his paintings, such as The Night Café, Wheat field With Crows, and The Starry Night. It’s no wonder Empire Magazine called it “ one of the most beautiful films of 2017”.

(2022·江苏无锡·校联考二模)When the great library of Alexandria (亚历山大图书馆) burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and so a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for very little money.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of animal skin on which was written the secret of the“Touchstone (试金石)”! The touchstone was a small pebble (鹅卵石) that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while common pebbles were cold.
So the man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up common pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days continued over a long period of time.
One day, however, about mid-afternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity (机会). Unless we are cautious (小心的,谨慎的), it's easy to fail to recognize(识别) an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.

A.Good habits can lead to success.
B.Habits can only hold you back.
C.Opportunity prefers slow but strong mind.
D.Opportunity only visits the ready and cautious mind.

(2022·江苏无锡·校联考二模)The policeman slowly walked along the street. It was nearly ten o’clock at night. The wind and light had kept most people at home.
Halfway down the street, the police saw a man against a door, with an unlighted cigar (雪茄) in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him, the man spoke quickly. “It’s all right, officer,” he said, “I’m just waiting here for an old friend. It is an appointment (约定) that was made twenty years ago. You think it funny to plan a meeting like this, don’t you?”
The man lit the cigar. The light showed a pale, square face. He was very well-dressed.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” the man went on, “I had supper at a restaurant with my friend Jimmy Wells. I was going to the west to try my luck, but Jimmy wanted to stay. We agreed to meet again exactly twenty years from the date and the time. That’s why I’m here.”
“What happened to your friend?” asked the policeman.
“I’m not sure,” said the man. “We wrote to each other for a while then stopped. But I’m sure if he is alive, he will keep his promise. We said we would meet at ten o’clock.” “OK, I’ll be on my way, good night.”
The policeman continued on his way. Bob waited about another twenty minutes. Then a tall man went straight to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” asked the new comer.
“Is that you, Jimmy?” cried the man in the door. “You’ve grown so tall. Let me have a good look at you. You don’t look anything like Jimmy.”
“You are right,” said the tall man. “I’m a police officer. You are wanted by the New York police. But before we go to the police station, here is a note from your friend Jimmy Wells.”
Bob opened the small piece of paper. His hand shook as he read.
    Bob

(2022·江苏无锡·校联考二模)Think of the empty cities in zombie (僵尸) movies. The streets, the shops and the schools are still there just like they would be on a normal day, except there are no people to be seen. It is the emptiness that makes you scared.
Now a real-life “ghost city” is being built in the US. But luckily, it has nothing to do with zombies it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future.
Called CITE – the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation (创新测评) – the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles, this small, empty city  sits  in  the  middle  of  the  New  Mexico  desert  (沙漠),  since  we  can’t  afford  to  test  the  latest technologies in the cities that we live in.
“It will be a true laboratory without safety problems that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired.
In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city. Just think about the possibilities – A.driverless cars can move freely on the streets, B.homes with robots can be designed, C. shared bikes can be seen everywhere and D.energy sources like nuclear (核的)  power can also be put to the test.
As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. “One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a beginner of Singularity University, US, Fortune magazine.
Jones is worried that, even if a technology does perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city.
But no matter what, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2019. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine.
85.Why do people need an empty place to build CITE?
A.Because the test will do well with the help of CITE.
B.Because the test will cause danger in our daily lives.
C.Because they can experience the new future technology.
D.Because they can help people get used to the technology.
86.What can we learn from the article?
A.Anyone can ask to try out their new designs in CITE.
B.Things in CITE can easily be broken down and built again.
C.Testing all new technologies in a real city will cause problems.
D.People can suddenly jump out in front of some new technologies.
87.In the fifth paragraph, there’re four examples marked A.B.C and D.Please choose the one which shouldn’t be there.
A.driverless cars can move freely on the streets
B.homes with robots can be designed
C.shared bikes can be seen everywhere and
D.energy sources like nuclear (核的)  power can also be put to the test.
88.What is the main purpose of this article?

B.To explain CITE and the problems to deal with.
C.To show that CITE has got a bright future ahead.
D.To explain why CITE is very helpful to technologies.

Hi, I’m Mike. I work as a writer for GROWING UP. I hope I can help you with your problems.
Q Dear Mike,I’m not very good at giving advice to other people. A friend of mine recently bought some Nike trainers online, but they were fake (假的). Everyone except him can tell that they’re fake. I don't know how to bring this up with him. Can you give me some advice?
    – xxximaaa
A Dear xxximaaa,A long time ago, a friend of mine told me what he liked most about me. It was that I always ‘kept it real’. Do you know the meaning of it? It means being honest and open, even when your thought is unpopular.
I suggest that you keep it real with your friend. If no one else is brave enough to tell him about his shoes, then maybe you should be the one to do it. You don’t have to do it in a mean (刻薄的) way. Just go to your friend secretly and bring it up. Your friend will thank you because you are honest.
On the other hand, who really cares if the shoes are fake? Is it really that big of a deal? Maybe you should just forget about it. If other people are making fun of him for having fake shoes, they really have a problem.
    – Mike
If you have problems when growing up, I recommend you GROWING UP!

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)Lin Hanxing is a 30-year-old who lives in Beijing. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of trousers, four pairs of shoes, three books and a few other things. It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, Lin was one of those people who couldn’t stop buying things. Back then, she had more than 400 pieces of clothes and handbags. But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014, introduced by Joshua Becker, a writer in the US who was promoting (推动) a minimalist lifestyle. He encouraged people to reduce the number of their belongings (财物) to fewer than 100. Lin decided to give it a try. She threw away 90 percent of her belongings. She also cleared 120 people she never spoke to from her QQ and Wechat. After doing all that, Lin said she felt ‘lighter’.
We used to think owning more was the way to lead a rich life. But now many people believe that owning less is rich, perhaps richer.
According to US writer Joel Stillerman, people who are educated and wealthy are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. These people are saying, ‘I can afford to have less.’
But leading a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t only mean owning or spending less. Adam Lucacias from a UK research company Euromonitor found young people spend less on belongings, but more on short holidays and visits to the movies.
‘They are looking for a life that is all about culture.’ Alison Angus, the manager of Euromonitor, said.
So perhaps it all comes down to how we define (定义) ‘wealth’. Is wealth in life about buying more and owning more, or is it about learning more and experiencing more?
92.Which of the following leads a minimalist lifestyle?
    A.Alison Angus. B.Adam Lucacias.
    C.Joe Stillerman. D.Joshua Becker.
93.What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.I can live a good life with no more education and money.
B.I can live a good life by experiencing less and learning more.
C.I can live a good life with necessary belongings and friends.
D.I can live a good life with less money and fewer belongings.
94.Lin Hanxing’s definition of ‘wealth’ may probably cover __________.
A.Owning fewer friends B.doing more learning
C.Having more holidays D.Chatting less often with people

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)Considered as one of the English language’s most talented poets, John Keats wrote poems that focused on imagination, human nature, and life. Although Keats didn't receive much education on literature, his own studies and interests brought him much success. Also, his own life situation made a great difference to his poems.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middleclass family, the young John didn't attend a private school, but went to a public one. His mother was not well educated. His teachers and his family’s friends considered him as a common boy who preferred playing and fighting much more to minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently. He wanted to keep away from the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying medical treatment so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary dream had taken too much of his life, especially with his love for the poems of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, named O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written another full poem, but was sharply criticized (批评) by a magazine. However, it didn’t stop his dream of poems.
John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story includes a farmer who falls in love with the moon and leads him to a trip of one boy's hope to deal with the limitations (限制) of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more storybased and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry because of his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” connected to his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would like to mix all that he learned together. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.
95.John Keats' thoughts about life changed because of __________ .
A.Edmund Spenser's poetry B.the deaths of his parents
C.the criticism of a magazine D.his early education from school
96.What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?
A.They received little education. B.They went to a private school.
C.They died of the same disease. D.They showed strong interest in poetry.
97.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.
B.The poem Hyperion wasn’t completed by Keats.
C.Edmund Spenser was the greatest poet in Keats’ time.
D.Keats’ family must have been very poor when he was young.

(2022·江苏无锡·无锡市江南中学校考二模)Hi, everyone, my name is Isabella and I’m an artist and fashion designer. But today, I’m not here to specially talk to you about art or fashion. Today I want to talk to you about dreams and stories.
Did you know that 4-minute mile once thought to be impossible? It was something outside we can consider. But in 1954, a guy named Bannister achieved. 35 In the following two months, two other runners broke 4-minute record and in the following three years and 19 runners continued. And now, it’s common for an experienced runner to be able to run a mile under 4 minutes. It’s just that they didn’t think it was impossible any more.
So we should dream big. I have always to be encouraged to dream big. And I think when you’re very little and maybe don’t know any better it’s easier to do because there’s fearlessness before you become afraid of something. What did you want to be? A movie star, an actor or an astronaut. Maybe you didn’t achieve these dreams, as you got older. Because as you got older, you became afraid. It’s important to hold on your fearlessness just like a child. Because it’s fearlessness that helps us achieve our dreams.
I’m a big fan of what I called dream board. It’s just a piece of paper. There’re lots of pictures of things I would like to achieve and I put it in a place where I see it every day and that helps me. I started doing this a few years ago because I read a study in the US showing that people who made dream boards are more likely to achieve them. I know this may not be new or useful to everyone, but for me, the act of making my dream board every year and seeing it every morning really helps me.
Another thing that I really believe in is the world. I believe that once you have your dreams and begin to work for it, people start appearing in your life that can offer support and help… So let’s face it, there’s going to be a lot of challenges but to get through. I think courage is needed.
In conclusion, after all of this dreaming you have to work hard and put a lot of time into everything you’re doing and have courage because there’s going to be a lot of difficulty but just remember the world is trying to help you. I know that I’m not the only one that has dreams. Everybody has dreams. You just need to work hard to achieve them.
    Thank you!

B.There was no reason why he should have gone on to do anything great.
C.Perhaps human body had reached its limit after Bannister broke the record.
D.It opened the floodgates for everyone else to continue breaking this record.
100.Which of the following are necessary to achieve dreams according to Isabella Taylor?
    a. Being afraid of nothing.
    b. Making a dream board.
    c. Devoting yourself to working hard.
    d. Asking people around you for help.
    A.ac B.ad C.bc D.bd

But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014, introduced by Joshua Becker, a writer in the US who was promoting (推动) a minimalist lifestyle.可知,Joshua Becker在美国推动极简主义的生活方式。由此可知应选D。
93.细节理解题。根据文意According to US writer Joel Stillerman, people who are educated and wealthy are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. These people are saying, ‘I can afford to have less.’
Lin Hanxing is a 30-year-old who lives in Beijing. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of trousers, four pairs of shoes, three books and a few other things.

After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently可知,在19世纪初,Keats的父母相继去世,他开始用不同的眼光看待生活。由此可知应选B。
96.细节理解题。根据短文第二段After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently和文章的最后一句话However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.可知,Keats和他的母亲都是因肺结核去世。故应选C。
97.推理判断题。根据短文的最后His next work was Hyperion that would like to mix all that he learned together. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.
After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently提到他的母亲因肺结核而去世。再由文章的最后However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.可知,Keats也是肺结核发作而去世,故应选C。
    98.A 99.D 100.A 101.D

I’m a big fan of what I called dream board. It’s just a piece of paper. There’re lots of pictures of things I would like to achieve and I put it in a place where I see it every day and that helps me.可知,“梦想板”就是一张纸,Isabella把自己的梦想写作上面,每天都看到,这样能促使她去实现它。由此可知应选A。
99.推理判断题。根据上下文But in 1954, a guy named Bannister achieved. In the following two months, two other runners broke 4-minute record and in the following three years and 19 runners continued.
In conclusion, after all of this dreaming you have to work hard and put a lot of time into everything you’re doing and have courage…可知,Isabella认为,实现梦想需要你努力的工作,付出很多的时间,并且要有勇气。因此a和c符合文意,选A。
