(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)I had failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string (串) of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.
We are a family of exploration and often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged (催促) my family, “Go without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view. I lied. Sick of being blind, I decided that it would never happen again. Surely I was in my 50s, but surely there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.
But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Besides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was revved up and ready to go. I bought the proper gear (装备), checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!
Now two years later, there I sat, watching thousands of people of all ages succeed where I had failed. I walked out, angry with myself, sat down and had myself a pity party. I was a master at the art of pity parties, having a great deal of experience in holding them. What was my problem? Where was I going wrong? I stopped and considered each failure, one by one. I made some very interesting discoveries.
I had failed to climb to the top of that Mayan pyramid, but I did climb it and stood on those ancient stones.1 had failed to meet a single weight loss goal and yet I had lost 43 pounds. I couldn’t walk 12 miles in four hours, but I could walk 12 miles.
All my failures were sounding like a success story. This time was giving thanks. I was thankful that I had been given the spirit of failure because failure meant that I was trying, that I didn’t give up. I decided that I would be crossing the finish line next year.
4.What can you learn from the passage?
A.The writer didn’t lose any weight in the end.
B.The writer didn’t climb the Mayan pyramid.
C.The writer didn’t take part in the big marathon.
D.The writer didn’t have holidays with his family.
5.What does the underlined sentence “I was revved up.” probably mean?
A.I got excited. B.I felt moved. C.I was pushed. D.I was chosen.
6.Which words can best describe the writer in the passage?
A.Clever and friendly. B.Interesting and proud.
    C.Humorous and hopeful. D.Kind and strong-willed.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and tried hard to start breathing.
Oliver had his first fight without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver’s survival. _______.
However, Oliver finally drew his first breath, and then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow(枕头) and said, “Let me see the child, and die.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. “You must not talk about dying yet,” he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then looked wildly around the room, fell back—and died. “Poor dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket of her long skirt.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The baby is weak and will probably be in danger,” he said. “If so, give it a little milk to keep it quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman. “The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she come from?”
“ She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. She’d walked some distance, Her shoes were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl’s left hand. “The old story,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar (乞丐). But when the woman dressed him later in hard cotton clothes, yellow with age, he looked exactly what he was—an orphan (孤儿) in a workhouse, ready for a life of sadness, hunger, and neglect (忽略).
Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly.

(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)Many of us listen to music while we work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate (集中) the task at hand. And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects (有益效果) on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the influence of background music is more complicated (复杂的).
The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial is probably based on the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation (空间旋转) perfornance is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all.
How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a fact called the irrelevant sound effect (无关声音效应). To study irrelevant sound effect, volunteers in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring (忽视) any background noise.
Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal (复述) abilities; and second, the sound must include acoustical (声学的) change. Where the sound does not change much, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions.
The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from trying to deal with two sources of ordered information at the same time — one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in making sure that irrelevant order information from the sound is not dealt with actually prevents this ability.
A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of words — from the task and the sound — are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.
What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or prevents performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.
10.“Mozart effect” is mentioned to ________.
A.explain how music can relax people B.show music can improve performance
C.advise people to listen to Mozart music D.stress Mozart music gains wide attention
11.It can be inferred that volunteers in the research ________.
A.have improved their rehearsal ability B.perform better in the quiet conditions
C.ignore the background noise successfully D.prefer the music with great sound change
    12.Paragraph 6 is written to ________.
    A.support an idea B.make a comparison C.introduce a topic D.describe a fact
13.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Music shapes your life. B.Music develops your creativity.
C.Choose quiet music for your work. D.Does music make you concentrate?

(2022·江苏宿迁·校考二模)On March 21, 2022, China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 crashed in Tengxian county, in Guangxi. CAAC issued a preliminary report on April, 20. The black boxes were severely damaged and data(数据)retrieval is underway.
    Do you know black boxes?
Black boxes are special instruments. They are mainly used on planes to record all in flight information. They are recorders for the purpose of making it easier to know how the accidents happened in flight.
An airplane actually has two black boxes. The flight data recorder catches the information, which can discover whether human error or instrument problems contributed to an accident. The cockpit(驾驶舱)voice recorder records pilot voices and cockpit sounds.
The black boxes are not black. They are painted bright orange to make them easy to see after accidents. Because the instruments are often burned and turned into black after air accidents. People often call them black boxes. The outside is with stripes of reflective tape(反光带). The black boxes are usually placed in the tail of a plane where they are more likely to survive a crash. A flight data recorder is required to store at least 25 hours of flight information. A cockpit voice recorder is required to record at least 2 hours of audio information.
For the black boxes to survive a crash, they are built to be waterproof, fireproof, shockproof, heat and pressure and corrosion resistant(耐腐蚀). The black boxes must be able to hold 3,400 times the force of gravity, when the airplane goes down at the speed of about 500 km/h. They can survive in as deep as 6,000 meters underwater or a very high temperature-one hour at 1,100 degrees centigrade. They can send signals(信号)for one month so that people can find them.
How is data from black boxes picked up? It needs special skills to physically bring the black boxes back. Investigators(调查者)may need to clean and dry the black boxes and download data from them. It takes time to download and get the information from data. If the storing units go wrong, it will take longer time, either days or months.
So, the black boxes are very important to explain to everyone what happened during the flight.
    20.What can black boxes do?
A.Help the pilots drive the plane. B.Keep passengers feel comfortable during flying.
C.Avoid air accidents. D.Record some information about plane.
21.Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Black boxes can keep sending signals for less than a month.
B.It takes time to download data from the black boxes.
C.Black boxes are painted black with stripes of reflective tape.
D.One black box is in the head of a plane and the other is in the tail.
22.In Paragraph 6, the writer uses numbers to show ________.
A.the black boxes are strong enough
B.the black boxes can help the plane land safely
C.the black boxes can tell people the cause of the accident
D.the black boxes can hold a lot of information about the plane
23.This passage mainly tells us ________.
A.how long black boxes work B.how black boxes pick up data
C.what messages black boxes carry D.what we know about black boxes

(2022·江苏宿迁·校考二模)Scrooge was a cold, greedy(贪婪的), mean(吝啬的), old man! The cold within him froze his old face. It made his eyes red and his thin lips blue. And it spoke out in his unkind voice. A frost(霜)covered his head, his eyebrows, and his pointed chin. His office is quite cold even at Christmas.
Nobody ever stopped Scrooge in the street to say. “My dear Scrooge. How are you?” No beggars(乞丐) asked him for a penny. No children asked him. “What time is it?” No man or woman ever asked Scrooge for directions. And even dogs ran away from him.
Once upon a time, on Christmas Eve, old Scrooge sat in his office. It was a cold and foggy day. He could hear the people outside, stamping their feet on the pavement to warm themselves. It was only three o’clock, but it was already quite dark. The candles were flickering(闪烁)in the windows of the neighbouring offices. The fog poured in through every keyhole. It was so thick that you could hardly see the houses on the other side of the street.
The door of Scrooge’s office was open so that he could keep his eye on his clerk(职员), Bob Cratchit. Bob sat in a cold, dark and small room. He was writing letters. Scrooge had a very small fire, but Bob’s fire was even smaller. Bob couldn’t add any more coal because Scrooge kept the coal box in his room. So Bob put on his winter woolen scarf and tried to warm himself by the candle.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle, and God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew(侄子)Fred.
    “Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug(谎话)!”
“Christmas is a humbug, Uncle!” said Scrooge’s nephew. “You don’t mean that, I’m sure.” “I do,” said Scrooge. “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be happy? You’re poor to be happy.”
“Oh,” said his nephew, laughing. “What reason have you got to be sad? You’re rich enough. Don’t be angry. Uncle!” said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” replied Scrooge. “I live in a world of fools. Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s a time for finding yourself a year older, but no richer,” said Scrooge.

(2022·江苏连云港·校考二模)Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws(吸管)and bags. More and more businesses are switching(转换)to paper products as an alternative(可供选择的事物). Paper is considered by many to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere(大气). They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).
Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process(过程)than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents. The most environment-friendly solution(解决办法)is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. Through increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
32.What can trees do to the environment?
A.They can make carbon dioxide levels lower in the air.
    B.They can improve climate quickly.
C.They can cause more deforestation in the end.
D.They can provide materials for paper products.
33.From Paragraph 4, we can know that ________.
A.plastic products are much better than paper ones
B.paper products are easy to transport
C.one truck is needed to transport two million plastic bags
D.plastic products often lead to a larger amount of a waste
34.Which is the following should people use in order to protect the environment?
A.Recycled paper bags. B.Steel knives and forks.
    C.Strong plastic chairs. D.Single-use cups.
35.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To push for an end to plastic straws and bags.
B.To tell readers the disadvantages of paper products.
C.To push the use of environment-friendly products which can be recycled.
D.To introduce the importance of making our earth a greener place.

(2022·江苏连云港·校考二模)I decided to explore the island and set off cautiously(谨慎地)so that I was not attacked. I found a road with tracks of human feet as well as of cows and horses. Suddenly, I saw some strange disgusting creatures(生物)with long hair. They were dirty and smelly.
They wanted to attack me, but suddenly all of them ran away when a grey horse came close. Later, another large horse arrived and they began talking about me. They made horsey sounds which were only understood by themselves and kept checking me and touching my clothes and body. I heard the word “Yahoo” in their conversation again and again. I could remember that these horses were really intelligent(聪明)as they communicated in a logical(合乎逻辑的)manner.
The horses showed that they wanted to take me somewhere. So I followed them to a large wooden building. To my surprise, there weren’t any humans but horses inside. Again, when they spoke about me, the word “Yahoo” was repeated many times.
One horse took me outside. Here there were three of the smelly creatures who tried to attack me earlier. The horse put me near the creatures and I realized that it wanted to compare me with them. At first I felt insulted(侮辱的)to be compared with these dirty ones. But when I looked closer, I discovered that they were exactly like me—________.
The creatures were the Yahoos, which mean humans like me. However, what the horses didn’t understand was why I was so similar to them horses. Even I didn’t want to associate(混在一起) with these creatures. I immediately understood that I preferred the company of horses.
36.What did I think of the horses?
    A.They were dirty and smelly.
    B.They were afraid of me.
C.They were intelligent enough to communicate with each other.
D.They wanted to kill me for food.

Before we upload a photo of ourselves to social media, like WeChat, we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and give us longer eyelashes and fuller lips. With a couple of touches on our mobile phone, we’re able to present the best pictures of ourselves to others.
However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections(瑕疵) away, we’re also changing the way we look at our ourselves. 1
Last month, researchers from the US Boston University published an article Selfies﹣Living in the Era of Filtered (滤镜) Photographs. The article listed the bad effects of photo editing on people and the possibility to cause appearance worries. 2
The researchers think that these apps make it difficult to tell between reality and fantasy(虚幻). “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article says. 3
In the past, people might compare their looks to those who were famous that time. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms, and their feelings are connected to how good they look,” a British doctor Escho said.
4 “Now you’ve got the comparison of your real self to fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor at Northwestern University, told the HuffPost website. He further pointed out that when people spend too much time comparing with others, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like.
So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the Beauty Cam(美颜)?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good, I have my health.”
50.What may people do before they present the best of themselves on social media?
A.Wearing false eyelashes. B.Redding their lips before going out.
C.Using apps to edit photos. D.Smoothing their skin in the morning.

A.Everybody looks as good as himself in the Beauty Cam.
B.These apps make it easy to tell between reality and fantasy.
C.The article listed the bad and good effects of photo editing on people.
D.People today pay more attention on how good they look than in the past.

B.To call on people not to use apps on mobile phones.
C.To call on people to spend too much time comparing with others.
D.To call on people to learn something more important than appearance.

Long long ago, there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.
I do not know how this really happened, one fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter (木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself: “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say: “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” What a surprise!
He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look around the street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head “There may be something wrong with my ears.”
“Well, well—to work once more.” He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide, turned frightened eyes and his tongue hung down on his chin (下巴). “Where did that voice come from? This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child? Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden in it? If so, the worse for him. I’ll fix him!” With these words, he started to knock it. He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes--nothing; ten minutes—nothing. “Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Trees are one of the oldest “citizens” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Life is hard but the value of life is how you live it bravely. A man who overcomes himself is a real strong man in life. Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees as well as ours!
62.What does the writer want to tell us in paragraph 3?
A.When trees are four years old, they are just like little weak children.

C.Trees are very useful but they can only live to 25 years at most.
D.Trees are natural treasures and are well worth protecting.
63.What does the underlined word “hollow” probably mean?
    A.枯死的 B.空心的 C.腐烂的 D.脆弱的
64.Why should we enjoy every minute of our own life according to the passage?
A.Because just like trees, we change a lot as we grow.
B.Because trees devote all their lifetime to satisfying people and protecting the Earth.
C.Because life is meaningful though there are challenges in different periods of life.
D.Because life is becoming better and better with so many beautiful and useful trees.

(2022·江苏常州·校考二模)Do you have good friends? Do you sometimes feel so close to them that they are like family to you?
It turns out that this isn’t just an expression. A study by Yale University has found that you and your friends have more genes(基因) in common than strangers do. Researchers looked at the genes of 1, 932 people and compared them in pairs of unrelated friends and strangers. They found that friends have 1% of genes that match.
“1% of genes may not sound like much to the layperson(外行), but to geneticists(遗传学家) it is a larger number,” Professor Nicholas Christakis of Yale University told Discovery News. In fact, this is the same amount of genes you share with your fourth cousins, those who have the same great-great-great grandparents as you.
So do you happen to become friends with people who share your genes? Not at all. In fact, it is evolution(进化) that brings you together.
People who share certain genes also share skills and have similar likes and dislikes, researchers said. In ancient times, it was important that people who were alike stayed together. For example, people who had a similar susceptibility(易感性) to the cold were more likely to help each other build a fire, giving them a better chance to stay alive.
Researchers also found that among all the genes studied, those producing a change in sense of smell were the most similar in friends. This is probably because people who smell things in the same way are more easily drawn to similar environments. For example, people who like the smell of coffee may hang out at cafes(咖啡馆) more often and as a result are more likely to meet and become friends with each other.
With their findings, the team has developed an interesting test called the “friendship score”. It can help tell how big the chances are that two people will be friends by studying their genes.
So, here is a question for you: would you like to take this test and know in advance(提前) who your friends are going to be, or would you still prefer to learn about it by yourself and let time be the judge?

For seven years a bird had come and built her nest(鸟巢)in the same place. She and her mate had just returned on the day I went to work and the old couple welcomed them happily. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. Suddenly the bird flew to a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my best skill. (2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)On Saturday, an underwater volcano(火山) in Tonga erupted(爆发) in the South Pacific Ocean. Tonga is an island nation in the South Pacific ocean, home to about 105, 000 people. The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, is located off the coast of Tonga. Even though the volcano was underwater, it sent lots of gas, ash(灰烬)and stones 12 miles into the sky.
It took a while to get reports from Tonga because the event knocked out internet service in the area. Like most island nations, Tonga gets its internet through a cable that runs deep under the sea. Experts say it’s not yet clear whether the cable was broken during the event or simply lost power. A four-foot wave hit the capital, Nukualofa. People in low-lying areas were forced to go to higher ground. There are reports of serious damage(毁坏) in Tonga. Many houses near the shore were flooded. At present, the biggest danger is probably from the smoke and ash from the volcano hat has covered much of Tonga. The ash makes the air dangerous to breathe, and it is believed to have polluted many sources of drinking water.
New Zealand and Australia have sent teams to Tonga to help out. Some of the teams will use airplanes to get a better idea of the damage across the island nation. The large cloud of ash high above Tonga is making it impossible to get a good picture of what’s happening in the area from high in the air.

B.More than 105, 000 people live next to it.

    A.变化 B.改进 C.破坏 D.带来
96.Which of the following can we infer(推断) from Paragraph 3?
A.The ash from the volcano has covered much of Tonga.
B.The ash makes the air in Tonga dangerous to breathe.
C.Houses in low-lying areas were completely damaged.
D.People in Tonga will be short of clean drinking water.
97.Why is it hard for the teams to know exactly what’s happening in the area?
A.The airplanes cannot take off because of the ash.
B.There is still a lot of ash in the air above Tonga.
C.The teams don’t know how to take a good picture.
D.The clouds in the sky stop the teams seeing clearly.

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)Imagine this. There's an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple? A bestseller, Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength, suggests that willpower(意志力)is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: The Marshmallow Test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow(棉花软糖)on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they'd be given a second one(and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids do? Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower—they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who'd shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle(肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.
So, if you do daily "self-control exercises", such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you'll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your "willpower muscle" can get tired. If you've had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat.
That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!

(2022·江苏徐州·校考二模)What goes into mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks fighting with a serious look in their eyes, or popular children’s movies like Kung Fu Panda. But are they really kung fu?
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm began a journey of a kung fu pilgrimage(朝圣), traveling to cities in China and the US to search for the origin(起源) and value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this craft was more than fun.
Around 10 years ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years. But by practicing martial arts (武术) “very, very slowly”, he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find other meanings in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学)and core(核心)values,” Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua.
⑧Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two characters—age, meaning “dagger-ax”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always end up with baoquan. This lets each person know that there is nothing hidden and shows trust.
Brahm’s sees Kung fu as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be in harmony with other nations? “Its part of the psychology(心理) of the Chinese people. It’s also national psychology.” Brahm told Xinhua.
Bralm also believes that today’s world needs to restart equal exchanges between countries, and that culture and sports, such as kung fu, can serve as a great channel and bridge.
113.What does Laurence J. Brahm explore in Searching for kung Fu?
A.Styles of kung fu. B.People’s impressions of kung fu.
C.Functions of kung fu. D.The history and meaning of kung fu.
114.Which of the following would Brahm agree with about kung fu except ________?
A.It’s a way to kill time. B.It’s a way to make money.
C.It’s a way to stay healthy. D.It’s a way to keep awake.
115.The purpose of Paragraph ⑧ is to explain ________.
A.the core value of Chinese kung fu B.the history of Chinese kung fu
C.the structure of the Chinese word “wu” D.the beginning movement in kung fu

A.It influences China’s policy about sports.
B.It can spread Chinese culture worldwide.
C.It shows the importance of Chinese culture.
