(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)A heavy storm lasted all night, and then everything became peaceful the next morning: blue skies, warm air and a calm inviting sea touching the shore gently. Dad invited me to go with him for fishing. I decided to go, though fishing had never been my thing.
On the road, we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay(海湾) that had only one tiny channel to the sea.
Getting on our boat, we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance! On approaching them, we found it was a mother whale (鲸) with her baby. We couldn’t believe it … there aren’t any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them into the bay, where the water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive.
The little baby whale — actually as big as our boat — was obviously stuck now. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making bigger whirlpools (旋涡) and waves.
“She’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side.” my father said.
At this point, my father moved our boat, headed it towards the baby whale, and pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes, the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. It swam up right beside its mom now! Then they struggled in the desperate attempts to escape, but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. So we tried to guide them towards the bay channel. Gradually they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe.
As soon as they hit their first part of clean water from the sea, off they swam into the distance.
Before they left, the mother whale made a wave with her tail, giving us a trusting look in those huge eyes!
Till today, I always look back fondly to that golden day at sea. We had been with those wonderful animals for almost two hours.

6.What’s the best title of the passage?

(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)Nowadays, one of the great challenges of caring for children is the roadblock (路障) caused by the learner driver. Your child is almost an adult, but just before the last step, you need to spend 120 of the most stressed hours of your life locked with them in a car, their teenage hands behind the wheel. Do you know the phrase behind the wheel? It means driving.
① When I decided to teach my first child to drive, I was nervous. I’m not a natural teacher, as I am easily bored and quickly get angry. Worse, I’m not a natural driver. I even failed to get a license at the first time. I can get from A to B without too much trouble, but once I get there, I’m likely to drive into a wall while parking.
② Happily, my first child was a fast, hard-working learner, and always keeping an eye on traffic signs. Still, there were enough small mistakes. And by the time it was his younger sister’s turn, my nerves were already shot. My daughter was bright and talented, but on the roads, it seemed that she was just out of control. Even after hours of professional driving lessons, her every move behind the wheel is fresh and unexpected. Even after 40 hours of driving. mistakes happen at times. We will be driving along beautifully for 30 minutes, and once I begin to relax, my daughter will sail through a red light.
③ Even if she passes her test, who can be sure that she won’t forget the next red light as soon as she’s out there on her own? One of my friends has refused to teach her daughter to drive as she is “just not responsible enough” to be on the road. A middle-aged friend of mine gave up trying to get his license after the eighth failure.
④ We often think that everyone should drive, but perhaps there are some people who just shouldn’t be behind a wheel. What if my daughter is one of them? Well, I don’t know. At least not yet. If it’s the end of the world, maybe we can stop driving lessons for a while?
7.Why does the author mention her own driving story in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain what makes a good driver.
B.To explain why her children couldn’t drive well.
C.To explain why learner drivers cause roadblock.
D.To explain why she was worrying about teaching driving.
8.”As much as I expect her to have a license, I find myself wondering if it’s a good idea.” can be put in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
9.The writer would probably ________ in the following days.
A.continue to teach her daughter to drive
B.let her daughter take professional driving lessons
C.encourage her friend to take the driving test again
D.advise her daughter to give up her driving lessons
(2022·江苏无锡·校考二模)As someone who’s been studying English for many years, you might think you know the English language pretty well. But if you overheard a British person say, “A Billy let some bees and honey in my sherbet (冰冻果露) last night,” would you understand what he meant? Probably not, but many native (本土的) speakers may not know what this person was saying either.
The example above was a sentence that a London taxi driver might say to another member of his or her tribe. In plain English, the sentence would be, “A customer left some money in my taxi last night.”
So, what exactly is meant by “tribe”? A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines (定义) who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own “secret language”, as the BBC called it.
If you work in a certain industry—education, for example, you may use slang (俚语) words that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, that only locals would understand.
These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US, for example, the underground “ballroom” (舞厅) tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its language was showed in the 2018 FX show Pose.
These secret words don’t always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people’s everyday vocabulary. For example, the phrase “to have beer”—meaning “to be in a conflict (冲突)” —was made popular by US rappers. Today, it’s widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote, “We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages, full of history and stories and in-jokes. And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never run out.”
10.The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used ________.
A.to prove that English is really hard for people to learn.
B.to explain to the readers what the meaning of “tribe”is
C.to teach readers how to communicate with taxi drivers
D.to show the languages of tribes are hard to understand
11.According to this passage, what does “tribe” refer to?
A.All members of a family. B.Workers in a certain company.
C.A group or class of people. D.People living in the same city.
12.What can we know about “secret languages”?
A.They mostly came from different kinds of musical cultures.
B.Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C.They first started in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s.
D.They have failed to become popular among young people.
13.What is Dent’s attitude towards the future of “secret languages”?
A.Confident. B.Worried. C.Uninterested. D.Doubtful.

(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)Wordle: The Game that Quickly Became an Internet Hit
You might have heard of the word game Wordle. Maybe you have even tried the game yourself. The online puzzle has become so popular that some people cannot go a day without it. Many players share their game results on social media.
Wordle is a very simple game. That may be why its popularity spread so quickly and widely. Compared to many other computer games, the design is also very simple. It contains just 30 empty squares appearing under the name “WORDLE.”
Players get six chances to guess a five-letter word that has been chosen by the game for that day. The goal is to guess the word in the least number of tries.
To start, players enter a real word. Then, the letters turn different colors to provide the player clues about the word. A green letter means the letter is in the word and is in the right position. Yellow means the letter appears in the word but is in the wrong place. A gray letter means it does not appear in the word at all.
The game is web-based, not an app. So, users do not need to download it. It is also free to play. Users can play the game once per day.
Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a New York software engineer. He said he first made it for his partner, who likes playing word games like crossword puzzles. But he decided in October to release it publicly. The game immediately took off.
As Wordle has grown, so has the number of experts offering advice for the best ways to play the game. One language expert, David Sidhu, recently gave his opinion on the best words to start a game with. He lists the most common letters from English words. The top letters he provides are a, r, o, i, and s. Sidhu also came up with a suggestion for the best starting word for Wordle. That word is “soare,” which means a young hawk. It is a British English word that was used commonly in the 1700s, the Collins English Dictionary reports.
17.When you turn on the game, which of the following pictures will appear on your screen?
A. B. C. D.
18.The game becomes so popular because _________.
A.people can’t go a day without playing it
B.it is simply designed and very easy to play
C.players can share their results on social media
D.many people offer advice on how to play the game
19.If you want to play the game, you have to _________.
A.know millions of words B.download it from the Internet first
C.start with a real word D.choose the right color for the letters
(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)I began working in journalism(新闻工作) when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.
With my load of magazines, I went to Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible(可见的), making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.
“How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.
“None.”
“Where did you go?”
“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”
“What did you do?”
“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”
“You just stood there?”
“Didn’t sell a single one.”
“My God, Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I made.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, talk to people with self-confidence, and persuade(劝说) them by saying that no one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.
“If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “you’ll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s common workman’s life, made up her mind that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

C.The First Nickle I Made D.My Early Success of A Journalist
(2022·江苏无锡·统考二模)The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow — an environment that’s never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering (遭受痛苦) things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors.
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:
“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.”
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have surely “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days.
23.What can we learn from Shakespeare’s works?

25.The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is used mainly to show _________.
A.Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories

26.The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to _________.

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)School started again, and soon the ink in Tom’s spelling book was found. Tom said he hadn’t split the ink, but that made it look as if he were lying. Becky almost said Alfred Temple had done it, but she kept quiet. She thought that Tom would tell the teacher about her tearing (撕) his book, so she didn’t save him. Mr. Dobbins beat him and then Tom went back to his seat.
After an hour Mr. Dobbins unlocked his desk and took out his book. Tom looked over at Becky. She looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment the master faced the children. There was a long silence, then he spoke, “Who tore this book?”
There wasn’t a sound. The teacher searched their faces.
“Benjamin Rogers, did you do it?”
Benjamin said no.
“Joseph Harper, did you?”
Joseph also said no. Dobbins looked at the rows of boys, thought for a moment, then turned to the girls.
“Amy Lawrence?”
A shake of the head.
“Gracie Miller?”
The same sign.
Becky was next. Tom was shaking from head to foot.
“Rebecca Thatcher?” (Tom looked at her face; it was white with terror) “Did you tear?” “No” “Look at my face, did you tear this book?”
Tom jumped to his feet and shouted, “I did it!”
The children stared in surprise at his foolish act.
And when he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks, and the love that came from Becky’s eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. And he didn’t even mind staying for two hours after school, because he knew that Becky was waiting for him outside.
Tom went to bed that night planning some actions on Alfred Temple, for Becky had told him everything. And he fell asleep with Becky’s last words to him in his ear, “Tom, you are so great.”

According to Maoyan company, it had earned over 1 billion yuan as of Feb. 16. It is centered on how Jing Hao, played by Yi, raised large sums of money to pay for his young sister’s surgery.
For Jing, 20, he needed a miracle to start his own business in face of the many difficulties he encountered. “Remember that nothing is impossible as long as you try your best,” Yi quoted his lines from the film in an interview with Cover News.

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)It may sound like a cliche (老生常谈), but food is still the stuff of life. So when global food prices soar (大涨), people worry.
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on April 8 that world food prices hit an all-time high in March. Prices for vegetable oils, meats, sugar and dairy products could rise up to 22 percent.
According to the agency, the FAO’s food price index (指数) had already reported an all-time high in February, as the pandemic, poor weather and climate crisis damaged agriculture and threatened food security for millions of people.
The Ukraine crisis (乌克兰危机) has made the situation much worse. Both Russia and Ukraine have vast grain-growing regions. They are among the world’s main breadbaskets. The two countries together accounted for around 30 percent of global wheat exports. The conflict has also caused a rise in the cost of the other daily essentials and fuel.
“It is extremely worrisome,” said Rabah Arezki, former chief economist at the World Bank.
In 2022, there will be 44 million people in 38 countries at the “emergency” phase of food insecurity, just one step away from a declaration of famine. People in South Sudan, Yemen, and the northern parts of Ethiopia and Nigeria are at particular risk. Recent unrest (动荡) across the world highlights the risks. In Sri Lanka, protests have erupted over shortages of gas and other basic goods.
Global food insecurity may make many concerned: Does China have enough food for its population of 1.4 billion?
According to Wei Baigang, chief economist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, China relies mainly on domestic grain production and only 2 percent of the nation’s grain is imported. Global price increases have had little impact on China’s food prices. China’s food prices even dropped 1.5 percent year-on-year in March, in sharp contrast to the global food price rise of more than 30 percent.
In 2021, China saw a good grain harvest for the 18th year in a row, with total grain output exceeding (超过) 650 million tons for seven consecutive years.
The harvest ensured the country’s basic self-sufficiency (自给自足) in grain and its absolute grain security.
38.What aspects threaten world food security except ________?
A.the pandemic B.poor weather and climate crisis
C.the Ukraine crisis D.the growth of population
39.Why does the Ukraine crisis make food safety worse?
A.Because this war used up a lot of materials.
B.Because the two countries stopped exporting food.
C.Because both Russia and Ukraine accounted for around 30 percent of global wheat exports.
D.Because the war affects peace and people’s lives.
40.The main reason for China’s food price stability (稳定) is that ________.
A.China mainly depends on its own food production
B.China does not import food
C.China does not export food
D.good weather and climate has brought about a large good harvest
41.What does the paragraph talk about?
A.It talks about the food security of China.
B.It talks about the food security of the world.
C.It talks about the people’s worries about food.
D.It talks the impact of the Ukraine crisis on food security.

I pulled out one of my favorite cassettes. It started to play but before long the music stopped. I opened the player and saw the tape in the cassette was all pulled out and twisted (扭曲的). I tried to fix it, but it was already broken beyond repair. I frowned. I didn’t want to risk another of my cassettes with a tape-eating machine, but I really wanted some music.
Then I noticed my ancient record player in the corner. I walked over and dusted it off. I pulled out an old record of my mom’s that my Dad had given me after she died. I turned on the record player and gently put the record on the turntable (唱机上的转盘). “Pop (砰)!” “Crack (噼啪声)!” went the record for a second as I put the needle (唱针) down. Then a beautiful melody (旋律) from my childhood started to play. I smiled and started to do my housework. The sweet songs I grew up on touched my soul. I felt the music coming out of me. I started to sing, letting my weak voice join in joyously with the music. I even dared to dance a little while I did the dishes. I smiled and laughed. My heart was filled with happiness. And at that moment I could feel the joy of the universe all around me. “This is how life is supposed to be!”
These days all my music is on CDs. My daughter says I am behind the times. She says I should buy a cellphone and download all the music I want. But instead, I think I will dust off those old records again, put them on that record player and start to sing along.
We all have music within us just waiting to get out. Don’t let your music die within you then. Share your song with the world. And don’t forget to dance a little too.

Catwoman is an iconic (标志性的) movie character. The DC Comics role has been played by many famous actresses over the years, including Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway. The latest to take it on is Zoe Kravitz. She plays Catwoman, whose real name is Selina Kyle, in the new movie The Batman.

(2022·江苏扬州·统考二模)The six-month stay for Chinese astronauts in the Tiangong space station has ended recently. Before returning, they face one last test — returning home safely. What needs to be done before they leave the station?
To go home after a long journey, you have to pack up. Besides their personal belongings, astronauts also need to bring home experimental data and samples (样品) for further research on Earth.
The three astronauts also need to clean “the house”. They must collect leftover food, sanitary waste and waste from experiments. The waste is put into the orbital module (轨道舱), which burns up as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere.
The astronauts must also put equipment back in place. It will be more than a month before the Shenzhou XIV astronauts enter Tiangong. They need to make sure that things like gym equipment are fixed to the walls for safety.
Astronauts experience microgravity (微重力) for long periods of time. This affects their bodies. They lose fluids, their muscles atrophy and they lose bone strength. To ensure a safe return, the three astronauts do physical exercises to keep their muscles strong. Based on their physical examination data, experts have customized (定制) exercise plans for each of them to ensure a safe landing.

If you ask me, I’m a cat person through and through.
To me, there is nothing better than having a cat of your own. Every time I see a cat, I am filled with so much fun. Don’t even get me started on all of the cute cat videos online.

For example, cats like to be clean. You usually don’t need to give them baths, but you do need to keep their fir clean and clean their litter boxes(猫砂盆)every day.

It looks more like an astronaut than a panda from the looks. Isn’t that fun?
Lisa
Shuey Rhon Rhon impresses me most. It’s the mascot of the 2022 Winter Paralympics. It’s cute and lovely. It looks like a red lantern hanging on homes and streets to celebrate Chinese New Year. Red is the colour of hope and good luck, so people think their dreams will come true in the new year. “Shuey” means “snow” in Chinese. “Rhon Rhon” are two different characters (字) with the same pronunciation. The mascot “Shuey Rhon Rhon” (雪容融) stands for communication among different cultures. The choice of the lantern is also seen as the symbol of harvest, warmth and light. I held my breath, hoping Mrs. Parmele wouldn't notice the empty desk next to mine. She did, and pointed him in that direction. He looked over at me as he sat down, but I looked away.
By the end of his first week, John was at the bottom of our class's stair. I told my mother one evening at dinner. "He hardly even knows how to count."
As I ate lunch with him the next day and listened to him, however, I realized that it is pleasant to be with him. After lunch, I decided that I would be John's friend.
One night, as Mother came into my bedroom, I said, "Mom, tomorrow is John's birthday, and he's not going to get anything. Nobody even cares."
"Don't worry," Mom said as she kissed me goodnight. "I'm sure everything will be fine." I wished John a happy birthday in the morning, and his smile showed me that he was glad I had remembered.

“What are you doing with the bandage?” asks Roger.
“There is something wrong with Dacty’s wing. My room is too small and he keeps banging his wings against the walls and furniture. He can’t fly. I feel sorry for him. And he is always hungry. Can you get something for him from the kitchen?”
Roger goes into the kitchen and cooks a big plate of sausages.
Helen helps Dacty down from her wardrobe. Roger puts the plate with the sausages in front of Dacty and the pterodactyl quickly eats them all up. Then he tries to fly on to the top of Helen’s wardrobe, but he can’t.
“Mum, we have to take Dacty to a vet. He can’t fly. There’s something wrong with his wing. Can you take us?”
“All right. Put him into the big basket.”

(2022·江苏连云港·统考二模)We feel angry or guilty about the things we did or did not achieve, about the things we cannot have, and many other things. It seems that everyone carries their own bad moods. But neither guilt nor anger can help us. Over time, they can be heavy weights on our shoulders.
These bad moods don’t do anything good for us at all. So you might ask yourself — is it possible to put down this heavy burden (负担) and give yourself a break? It is quite possible. Start by actually looking at your feelings. How do they get inside of us? Why do we carry them for so long instead of putting them down? Can we live without them?
By thinking about our bad moods, we can find healthy ways to deal with them. Unhealthy behaviors are not the way to do this. They provide no relief. Instead, there are better ways to deal with them. One of the best ways is forgiveness(谅解).
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. We should forgive ourselves first. We shouldn’t keep bad moods inside. We must also forgive others who have made us guilty or angry. This is not always easy. But when we learn to forgive ourselves, it becomes easier to forgive others as well.
There is nothing good about carrying years of emotional burdens. By forgiving ourselves and others, we can abandon our burdens and feel better about ourselves. The moment you do this, you will start to feel a lot lighter. Years of heaviness will be magically lifted! You’ll start to feel like you have more energy and you’ll be much happier with your life.
109.What is the first step to removing the burden of bad moods?
A.Asking others questions. B.Studying your moods.
C.Trying to live without them. D.Keeping them in your mind.
110.What is one way to deal with bad moods?
A.Keeping bad moods inside. B.Forgetting the past.
C.Forgiving ourselves and others. D.Sharing good moods.
111.What does the underlined word “abandon” in the last paragraph mean?
A.put away B.carry on C.stay with D.give up
112.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Forget about forgiveness. B.Forgive your mistakes.
C.Become an energetic person. D.Clear yourself of burdens.

To feed the world’s growing population, global agriculture will need to produce more food in the next 50 years than in the past 10,000 years. However, as weather patterns continue to change because of the climate change, this task becomes more difficult. Luckily, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is working on a farming project called Mineral to help solve the problem.
The team spent several years talking with farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. This led to the invention of “Plant Buggy”, a special kind of robot that collects information about crops in detail.
At first, the Buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took photos with phones. Over the years, they’ve been greatly improved. Now, they move on four big wheels that are high enough to run over rows of plants. The wheels are also strong, allowing them to move through muddy (泥泞的) fields. The robots are covered in solar panels (太阳能板) to save energy. They can take pictures of each plant, remember each plant’s location and measure its size. Studying the plant one by one can save time and money for farmers. For example, if Plant Buggies tell which plants have diseases, farmers can quickly clear them before they ruin other crops.
From strawberry fields in California to soybean fields in Illinois, Plant Buggies are learning about crops from sprout (发芽) to harvest, so scientists can find new ways to help understand how plants grow and interact with their environment.

①By ruining other good plants. ②By studying plants one by one.
③By growing and harvesting crops. ④By helping farmers find the sick plants.
⑤By learning about crops all through their life.
A.①②③ B.②③⑤ C.②④⑤ D.①②④
116.Which of the following may the writer agree?
