- Analysis of teaching material
The first lesson in this unit is a short story. The Last Leaf is a work by American writer O. Henry. The work tells the story of an old painter who paints the last ivy leaf for a poor student dying of pneumonia. The old painter Bellman is a small figure who has struggled at the bottom of society all his life, suffering from hardship and poverty all his life, but he loves the art of painting and sacrifices his life to save the life of a young painter.
- Analysis of target students
This lesson is aimed at students who are second-year high school students who have a desire to express their ideas and present the results of their discussions to some extent. However, the learning level of students in the same class is uneven, so it brings certain difficulties to teaching.
四、Teaching ideology
This class belongs to short stories, I start from the structure of the novel, the structure of the novel is divided into: background, characters, plot, so my teaching idea is: start from the structure of the novel, focus on letting students understand the plot development of the article, and finally strengthen the mastery of the plot through drama performance.
五、Teaching process
Step 1 Warming-up
How much do you know about O. Henry? Find some background information about him. Search online if necessary.

Look at the picture and think about the questions.

1. Read the story quickly and answer the questions.(Individual work)
(1) Who are the main characters?
(2) When and where did the story take place?
(3) What happened at the end?
2. Work in pairs. Read the story more carefully.And discuss the following questions.(Pair work)
(1) When Sue began a pen drawing in Johnsy’s room, what did Johnsy do?
(2) When Sue told Mr Behrman about Johnsy’s belief, what was Mr Behrman’s response?
(3) How did Johnsy change her attitude?
(4) What did the janitor find?
(5) Why did Mr Behrman get pneumonia?
Step 4 Stage plays as a class
Step 5 Post reading (Group work)
Work in groups. Think about the following questions and share your opinions.
- What do you think Sue’s comment “it’s Behrman’s masterpiece” means?
- Does the ending of the story surprise you? If yes, how? What do you think of such an ending?

七、Teaching reflection
After students complete the two pre-learning links, it is particularly important to analyze the changes in the attitude of the characters step by step in the post-teaching link to give full play to the students' initiative and build a ladder for the students. Therefore, at this stage, focus on the two aspects of reading the storyline and stage play to take students to summarize step by step, and sublimate them, and finally point the topic. However, the amount of tasks in reading is large, so the overall time for students to read carefully is relatively tight.
