In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp(竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.
Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 78 years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶) and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.
4. What do visitors think of Jamey Turner's performance?
A. Boring. B. Attractive. C. Special. D. Common.
5. How can Jamey Turner change the sounds of the glasses?
A. By beating the glasses in different parts. B. By placing the glasses on a wooden board.
C. By adding or reducing water in the glasses. D. By holding different glasses with rubber bands.
6. What may be Jamey Turner's real worry about the glass harp?
A. Little music is written for the instrument.
B. People are trying to play the instrument online.
C. Few people are playing the instrument these days.
D. The instrument cannot produce some beautiful sounds.
7. What is the best title for this text?
A. Making Music by Playing Glasses B. Special Sounds from Glasses
C. Devotion to Playing Glasses for Fun D. Fingers over the Tops of the Glasses

On Monday, about 270 pilot whales got into difficulty on a sandbank at Macquarie Heads, near Strahan on Tasmania’s west coast, about 190 kilometres from Hobart. Another 200 of the animals were found early on Wednesday, making it Tasmania’s largest recorded stranding event. The Department of Primary Industry, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) said that about a third had died.
Marine biologists arrived in the area to carry out rescue operations. They planned to use specialized equipment such as special tarpaulins to push the whales back into the deep water. The local police also assisted in the rescue.
The whales that were stranded are Pilot Whales, and they are found in almost all the oceans of the world, according to the Marine conservation group. Pilot whales are in fact one of the largest members of the dolphin family, but they are treated as whales for the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations issued in 1992.They were named pilot whales because it was thought that each pod followed a ‘pilot’ in the group.
Cetacean stranding, commonly known as beaching, is a phenomenon in which whales and dolphins strand themselves on land, usually on a beach. Several explanations for why cetaceans strand themselves have been proposed, including changes in water temperatures, unusual features of whales’ echo location in certain surroundings, and geomagnetic disturbances, but none have so far been universally accepted as a definitive reason for the behavior.
In recent years, whale strandings have become more frequent around the world. In November 2018, a dead sperm whale that had washed ashore in eastern Indonesia consumed a horrifying collection of plastic trash, including 115 drinking cups, 25 plastic bags, plastic bottles, two flip-flops and a bag containing more than 1,000 pieces of string. In all, the plastic contents of the whale’s stomach weighed 13.2 pound (six kilograms). The bags are black due to a reaction with the creature’s stomach acids, according to Thai Whales organization. A person, on average, breathes or swallows at least 74,000 microscopic particles of plastic each year.
8. How many whales died according to DPIPWE?
A. About 160. B. About 200. C. About 270. D. About 470.
9. What does the underlined word “stranding” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Being put into danger.
B. Being trapped in trouble.
C. Being found in extinction.
D. Being left or driven ashore.
10. What does the author want to tell us by the numbers in Paragraph 5?
A. Whales mistake plastics for food.
B. Whales need the ability of self-protection.
C. Whales’ living conditions are worsening.
D. Whales have an excellent digestive system.
11. What will be discussed probably following the last paragraph?
A. Protective measures for whales.
B. The reasons for whale stranding.
C. Studying whales’ stomach deeply.
D. Researching the oceans’ ecosystem.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. A

In order to help discover spoilage and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost, smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% of the £12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date—a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make. Known as “paper-based electrical gas sensors (PEGS)”, they detect spoilage gases like ammonia (a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell) in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless, so they don’t damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.
Lead author Dr Firat Guder of Imperial’s Department of Bioengineering, said, “Although they’re designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from food-borne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.”
“These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste.”
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.
12. What is the function of PEGS according to the text?
A. To improve the taste of foods. B. To improve the service of stores.
C. To help supermarkets store foods. D. To help people test food freshness.
13. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning?
A It acts as an electronic nose. B. It reads the data collected by PEGS.
C. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper. D. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
14. What does Dr. Firat Guder say about use-by dates?
A. They are not completely reliable. B. They can help reduce food waste.
C. They are based on scientific research. D. They are not accepted by the consumers.
15. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A. The process of researching spoilage sensors.
B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
C. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing.
D. The influence of use-by dates on supermarkets and consumers.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. B

The Adoption Option
There are many wonderful pets looking for new homes. ____16____. The following is some advice about introducing a rescue dog into your life.
●Choose wisely
No matter how cute a dog is, it’s important not to let the heart rule the head when choosing a rescue dog. People naturally love puppies, but mature dogs are a great choice for many people. ____17____. The dog’s personality and size are usually apparent, so there should be no surprises.
●____18____
That a dog is available for adoption doesn’t mean they are automatically a problem dog. ____19____. However, some may exhibit unruly(难以驾驭的)behavior due to a lack of training. It’s important not to confuse a lack of training with more serious behavioral issues. Good shelters and rescue groups will have every dog assessed by a qualified behavioral trainer to identify potential problem behaviors.
●Coming home
Arriving in a new home can be stressful for an adult dog. For many dogs you will have to take a trial-and-error approach to understanding what they like, what makes them feel secure and what they fear. You had better gradually expose your rescue dog to a range of different experiences and other dogs to judge and manage their behavior appropriately. ____20____. In this way, they will have company and can be supervised in the early stages.
A. What to expect
B. What you see is what you get
C. Common problems and special behaviors
D. Adoption provides a pet that second chance
E. Many rescue dogs are well trained and well behaved
F. Most of these issues can be overcome with good training
G. Therefore, it’s wise to get time off work when the dog arrives
【答案】16. D 17. B 18. A 19. E 20. G
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章讲述了收养救援犬的一些建议。
【16题详解】
根据前文“There are many wonderful pets looking for new homes.”(有很多很棒的宠物在寻找新家)后文“The following is some advice about introducing a rescue dog into your life.”(以下是一些关于将救援犬引入你生活的建议)可知,空白处描述的为收养宠物对宠物的意义,与接下来谈到的收养建议构成逻辑上的连贯。选项D.“Adoption provides a pet that second chance”(收养宠物给了宠物第二次机会)符合题意,故选D。
【17题详解】
根据上文“People naturally love puppies, but mature dogs are a great choice for many people.” B.“What you see is what you get”(你看到的就是你得到的)符合题意,故选B。
【18题详解】
本句处于段首,结合上文“Choose wisely”下文的句首句子“Coming home”,可知,此处用祈使句,且句式结构简单。根据下文“That a dog is available for adoption doesn’t mean they are automatically a problem dog.”(一只狗可以被收养,并不意味着它们就是问题狗)可知,我们打算收养救援犬的时候,要有自己的期望,知道我们期待得到什么。选项A.“What to expect”(期待什么)符合题意,故选A。
【19题详解】
根据后文“However, some may exhibit unruly(难以驾驭的)behavior due to a lack of training. ”(然而,一些狗可能会表现出不守规矩的行为,由于缺少训练)可知,空白处表示的内容和后文是相反的含义,即多数的狗都是经过训练的,也守规矩。选项E.“Many rescue dogs are well trained and well behaved”(许多救援犬训练有素,举止得体)符合题意,故选E。

Annie’s eyes popped open Friday morning. She hurried downstairs and began to have her breakfast quickly.
“What’s the rush, early bird?” Dad asked. “Today’s my spelling test. Dad,” Annie said. “Mrs. Page promised a prize to everyone who gets 100 percent. I’ve studied the list all week. The words are hard, but I’m ready.”
Annie studied the spelling of each word again as Mom drove her to school. Finally, it was time for the test. “Impatient,” Mrs. Page began. Annie wrote down the word correctly and quickly.
“Word number two: weird,” Mrs. Page said.
“Easy,” Annie thought. She quickly wrote it on her paper.
Twenty-three words later, Mrs. Page collected the test papers. “I’ll mark your papers during lunch,” she told the class. After lunch Mrs. Page said, “Several of you earned a prize today for perfect test scores. Tracy, Jonas, Olivia, and Annie all scored 100 percent on the test!”
Annie smiled as she walked to the front of the room. Mrs. Page gave each of the four students a nice pencil. Annie’s was silver, pink, and blue — her favorite colors. She held the beautiful pencil high while the class clapped. “This is one of my best days ever,” Annie thought as she sat down.
Mrs. Page handed back the test paper and Annie read the words over, proud of the hard words she had spelled. Suddenly she stopped at the word “weird”. It didn’t look right. Annie pulled out the study list and made a comparison. “W-i-e-r-d,” she whispered. She had spelled it wrong.
“What should I do?” Annie wondered. “I want my classmates to think I’m a great speller. If I tell Mrs. Page I’ll have to give back my prize, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Annie stared at the test paper with the big red “100%” written at the top. Then she thought of a lesson Dad taught her when she was very young, “We should always be honest.”

Mrs. Page held up Annie’s test paper. “Class,” she said, “Annie did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mrs. Page smiled at Annie. “She taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Annie looked around. She found many of her classmates were smiling at her. “Annie, I want you to have this pencil because you set a good example for all of us,” Mrs. Page said. Annie took the beautiful silver, pink, and blue pencil from her teacher. “Thank you, Mrs. Page.” She couldn’t wait to show it to Dad and tell him one of her best days ever.
