The following four famous paintings—from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece—have stood the test of time.
    The Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait,an oil painting on wood produced in 1434,in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her,is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery,London. This painting is not only visually interesting but also famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through Jan van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
    The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas(油画布),a moderately abstract landscape painting of a night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital in Saint-Remy-de-Provence,France between 1889 and 1890.When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941,it was not well known, but it has since become one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works.
    The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565.It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of July and August. Nicolaes Jonghelinck,a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, once held this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
    Guernica
Guernica,a large oil painting, was painted by the Cubist(立体派的)Spanish painter,Pablo Picasso in 1937.The title "Guernica" refers to the city that was bombed during the war. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an antiwar symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.

Lillian,17,had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year's Eve when beach-goers started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had jumped out of the bushes(灌木丛)—straight into the sea.
The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks,So instead of turning back and heading back into the bushes,it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed (摆动)around in the waves and went underwater several times before Lillian decided to take action.
As with any other animal rescue,it's important to approach the situation with .Wild animals that are stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Lillian was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and hit the water at a run. "It just didn't want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared," she said. "I was trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it's a wild animal, even though I was helping,I wouldn't want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out."
As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones,Lillian paddled(用桨划船)behind the animal carefully and guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Lillian's feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her! "It was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes staring at me,as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes," Lillian said. "I didn't think that was going to ever be my first rescue. I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one."
    24. What happened to the kangaroo? ______
    A. It jumped off the rocks by mistake.
    B. It was forced to leave the bushes.

Many of us know about Russia's Lake Baikal from our textbooks,or by listening to Chinese singer Li Jian's hit song,Lie Baikal. But over the past decade, the world's deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.
Each March since 2005,about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. They come to explore the lake's breathtaking beauty and challenge themselves in unpredictable conditions. The 26-mile (41.84-kilometers) journey starts on the lake's eastern shore. In March, the ice is a meter thick and iron-hard. Runners cross this frozen surface, finishing on the western side of the lake.
Known as the "blue eye of Siberia",Lake Baikal has exceptionally clear waters. This means its ice is almost perfectly transparent (透明的). "Seen from above,a runner on the ice looks as if he or she were jogging through space." The New York Times noted.
The landscape might be beautiful, but it's also harsh. Strong winds blast (侵袭) across the lake and frostbite can occur within half an hour.Runners say the cold climate is what draws them. They want to test their limits.
"When you are in such an environment, you don't have cars around you,and you don't have the noise around.I think these extreme races allow you to be alone with nature." Alicja Barahona,a 64-year-old runner from the US,told ABC news.
The location offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon. The finishing line is visible from the start, but the endless white offers no progress markers. The race also ends with little fanfare (隆重的欢迎).Tourists crowding the ice are mostly addicted to snapping selfies (自拍) and just ignore the runners.
For some runners, the absence of spectators makes the race more challenging, because it's lonely. They must fight with themselves."You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself. All you need to do is to defeat yourself." Veronique Messina,a French runner, told the Telegraph.
    28. What can we know about the BaikalIce Marathon from the article? ______
    A. It takes runners from the northern end to the southern end of the lake.
    B. It involves extreme weather and beautiful scenery.
    C. It attracts more and more participants each year.
    D. It is about 26 kilometers in length.
    29. How does the Baikal Ice Marathon differ from other marathons? ______
    A. Only men are allowed to run in this race.
    B. The runners are often distracted by tourists.
    C. There are many progress markers on the ice.
    D. The runners can see the finishing line from the start.
    30. What is the most challenging part of the race for Messina? ______
    A. The cold climate. B. The long distance.
    C. Noisy surroundings. D. Loneliness.
    31. How many reasons are listed to show the loneliness? ______
    A. 5. B. 4. C. 3. D. 2.
    D
There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs ,and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
32.What’s the function of food mentioned in the text?
    A. To help motivate homesickness.
    B. To show national identity.
    C. To reflect a country’s history.
    D. To show a community’s superiority.
33.What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The specific traditional food.
    B. The national culture.
    C. A traditional expression of food.
    D. The old-fashioned taste.
34.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurants?
    A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
    B. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
    C. To make the dishes popular among customers.
    D. To present their own food culture in a new way.
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures?
    A. Negative.
    B. Balanced.
    C. Unfair.
    D. Unchangeable.

Jonathan had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day after angrily running away from his home in the morning. Thinking of his quarrel with his mother for his study, he still felt depressed and hopeless.
It was freezing and snowing at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty set where there were no passers-by, because people must have locked themselves at home for warmth. Jonathan was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he encountered a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Jonathan had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s sad crying and the worry that he might be hit by cars made Jonathan just not walk away. He approached, saying, “Hey! What are you doing alone here? Where is your mother?”
“I want to go to mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Jonathan led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here? What’s your name?”
“I’m Leo. I was playing with my cat. He ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I turned back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Jonathan decided that he couldn’t leave the little boy alone here. With no cellphone and considering the police station was far from here, Jonathan decided to help him first.
He took him to different neighborhoods, aiming to look for his home. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker, and Jonathan thought he had to find Leo’s home. He knocked on every door, noneffective. Exhausted and starving, he realized Leo must be as hungry as him. He offered him the chocolate he had bought with his rest money. It was snowing more heavily, and he removed his coat and put it around Leo.
    注意:

Suddenly, a police car was drawing, and Jonathan waved with excitement to it. To his relief, the police car pulled up and two policemen got off. Jonathan couldn’t wait to explain what had happened to Leo. Then, the policemen checked for any missing person’s report without any delay, but found none. Having no choice, they drove the two of them around the nearby to continue searching for Leo’s home. Finally, they made it to contact the boy’s parents. Jonathan was more than glad to witness Leo’s reunion with his parents.
Seeing Leo and his parents off, Jonathan was lost in thought. Recalling how anxious Leo’s parents were and how joyful the boy was to see his parents again just now, Jonathan was deeply touched. He thought his parents must be as worried as Leo’s. Or maybe they were anxiously searching the world for their son right now. He grew guilty for ignoring his parents’ love for him and for what he had done today. All his anger dying away in an instant, he rushed in the direction of his home.
