Samsung
Samsung making great tablets might sound strange to someone not too familiar with their devices, but the company has made some interesting improvements with tablets. And much like their phones, Samsung has a wide variety in their products, with the very affordable Tab A7/A8, to the high-end flagship S8 Ultra. So if you’re team Android as opposed to Apple, Samsung is probably the way to go.
Best tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra
Microsoft
Microsoft has traditionally been a major player in computing so it’s no shock that they also make well-designed and more than capable tablets—the Microsoft Surface. With the idea of the Surface tablets being a 2-in-1 device, a tablet that can functionally run like a laptop, running windows, and featuring basically the same processors that you’d find in a laptop.
And with an additional keyboard, great displays and long battery life, the Surface tablets make for great machines for work or play respectively.
Best tablet: Microsoft Surface Pro 8
Amazon
Amazon does indeed make tablets. In terms of size, they range from seven up to ten inches and even include a kids’ tablet for the young ones. So if you prefer tablets over ten inches, you may be wanting to look elsewhere.
But all in all, they’re a good shout for a first-time tablet buyer that isn’t looking to spend a few hundred pounds on a device, but still wants to watch videos or browse the web on the go.
Best tablet: Amazon Fire HD 10 plus

23. What is the purpose of this piece of writing?
A. To rank tablet computer brands according to producers.
B. To encourage readers to purchase tablets via their website.

When Emanuel received an email from Professor Richard English at Queen's University, who encouraged him to apply for a PhD in Politics in Belfast, it was a pinch-me moment Emanuel never thought would be possible. After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets, couch-surfing at friends' houses and weeding gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world's leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to Queen's University over 4,000 miles away.
Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. What followed was a childhood with uncertainty as Emanuel was passed between the adoption system and family members.
Through his high school and community college years, he moved from house to house, living with friends at times and living on the streets at others.
Determined to change all that despite his rocky start in life, Emanuel involved himself in school---doing everything he could to earn extra tuition money in his spare time. But getting accepted into university was scarcely possible because a person like him couldn't get a regular student loan.
Fortunately, the government backed him, having created a policy allowing disadvantaged persons to access funding for higher education. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a lst Class Honors degree and went on to do his Masters.
Emanuel knows that his story could have been very different.
"I discovered Professor Richard English online and sent him an email honestly, not thinking he would reply and to my surprise, he did. I applied for the highly competitive Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme in order to fund my research at Queen's. When I was told I was successful, my whole world changed."
24. What does the underlined word “pinch-me" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Imaginary. B. Anticipated.
B. Unbelievable. D. Embarrassing.
25. What happened to Emanuel in his childhood?
A. His father passed away early. B. He received great parental care.
C. He was once adopted by his relatives. D. He lived with his friends now and then.
26. Which of the following can best describe Emanuel?
A. Tough and strong-willed. B. Determined and talented.
C. Enthusiastic and generous. D. Hardworking and attractive.
27. What is the main idea the author wants to convey to us?
A. Well begun is half done. B. Never judge by appearances.
C. Many hands make light work. D. You are the architect of your own life.
C
Search and rescue teams are often accompanied by man’s best friend. A dog’s greater sense of smell can be important to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit APOPO train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’re just as trainable as dogs,” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”
At the moment, the rats are wearing homemade prototype backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment, and location trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris(模拟的废墟). Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins. “We have not been in a real situation yet, we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris,” Kean said. “We have the potential to speak to victims through the rat.”
Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.
28. What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A. They are easier to train.
B. They have a better sense of smell.
C. They are more suitable with a smaller size.
D. They adapt to new environments more quickly.
29. What function is expected of the backpacks?
A. To guide rats to find survivors.
B. To protect rats from being injured.
C. To provide some food for trapped people.
D. To help rescuers communicate with victims.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of training the rats.
B. The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C. The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites.
D. The importance of the research environment.
31. What will scientists plan to do next?
A. Use rats for rescue work in more countries.
B. Send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C. Conduct further study on disaster warning.
D. Develop the technology to assist GEA.
第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中两项为多余选项。
Everyone gets angry. If you’re experiencing huge anger, though, it could be damaging your mental and physical health as well as your relationships with others. Uncontrolled anger can be potential problems, such as anger management issues or mental disorder. 32 To control your anger, you can try to take the following measures.
Take a break as soon as you recognize that you’re angry. You can take a break by stopping what you’re doing, getting away from what makes you annoyed or just take a deep breath. 33
Visualize a happy place. If you still have a difficult time calming down, imagine yourself in a scene you find incredibly relaxing. 34 Focus on imagining every detail of this place: the light, the noises, the temperature, the weather, the smells. Keep thinking of your happy place until you feel completely immersed in it, and hang out there for a few minutes or until you feel calm.
Practice positive self-talk. Change the way that you think about something from negative to positive. 35 After you have given yourself a moment to calm down, “discuss” the situation with yourself in positive and relieving terms.
36 Sometimes sharing your concerns with a close friend might help you vent(发泄) your anger. Clearly express what you want from the other person. If you just want to vent your anger, state at the beginning that you don’t want help or advice, just sympathy. If you’re looking for a solution, let the other person know.
A. Ask for the support of someone you trust.
B. Positive thinking can help you relieve your anger in a healthy way.
C. Keep exercising until you feel that you have regained control.
D. It could be any place that makes you feel at home and peaceful.
E. So it’s important to control your emotions and calm yourself down.
F. Remember that you do not have to respond to a situation immediately.
G. Getting away from what is upsetting you will make it easier to calm down.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn't explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
P1:I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor.
P2: It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope.

参考范文1:
I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. Dizziness swept over me as I figured out that I had toppled off the ladder and fallen back first to the cellar ground. My right foot felt numb and every part of my body ached badly. Things got worse when the old root cellar floated its musty dampness to my nose. Was it my doomsday? Trying hard to get rid of this thought, I used all my might to scream out loud “Help! Help!”. No luck! Feeling freezing cold both physically and mentally, I fumbled for my clothes and accidentally felt the flashlight, which again flared my faith to go out. However, it failed me as always—the flashlight didn’t work due to the hard crash against the ground. In desperation, I decided to give in to my fate when there came a faint purr.
It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. Just for a glimmer of hope, I looked up to the vent of the cellar, delighted to find my dear Angelica stood still alertly, poking her head out and staring at me from above. “Angelica, go find Jack!” At my request, the calico-colored fur soon disappeared from my sight. It wasn’t long before I heard the hurried approaching footsteps. Eventually, I was rescued! According to Jack, it was Angelica who kept pawing at the door to get his attention and navigated him to where I was. Spontaneously, I pulled her closer to my chest, extremely grateful for this special Christmas gift who was destined to be our companion and family member.
参考范文2:
I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My head was pounding, and I couldn’t seem to focus on my thoughts. I had lost my footing/ missed a step on the third rung (第三级阶梯), and the ladder had given away, sending me crashing to the ground. The pain in my arm was intense, and I knew it was broken. I was trapped, alone, in the dark cellar with no way to climb out. I called out for help, but my voice echoed back to me, hollow and empty. Despair was about to swallow me when there came a faint but familiar mew.
It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. I prayed that she would realize something was wrong and come to my rescue. Her fearless nature and loyalty gave me a glimmer of hope. Lying in the darkness, I tried to calm my breathing and listened for any other sound from above. Time stood still till hurried footsteps broke the dead silence. It was Angelica and my husband! She had seemingly sensed my situation and led my husband here by pulling his pant with unremitting efforts. Stroking her soft fur, I was convinced that the angel was indeed right by my side.
