As children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A's, the honor
roll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers.
When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life
and careers don’t have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer.
I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with what
she wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she
has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do
"some big things," like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn't sure of the right answer
for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the
answer.
We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. The
grown-up definition of the “right answer” is different than that in school. What would you do if
you weren't afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any
point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to
look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to:
What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at? If I
had no fears, what would I do? What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal
(even if it's not perfectly clear)?
I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather than
“right answer” questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me
as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today?
24. What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph?
A. Life is harder for adults than children.
B. Academic excellence is not necessary.
C. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school.
D. Rules in life are different from those in school.
25. What is wrong with the college student?
A. She does badly in her studies.
B. Her parents are not proud of her.

C. She feels puzzled about her life career.
D. She is not sure whether to do" some big things".
26. When looking for the answer in life, you need to .
A. trust your parents B. listen to your heart
C. follow valued advice D. learn from your classmates
27. Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer?
A. What do I love to do?
B. What matters most to me in life?
C. What will make me look successful?
D. What will I regret not doing when I'm 80?

New research has shown that a fungus(真菌) skin could provide a new alternative to some
plastics used in computer chips( 芯 片 ), making them easier to recycle. The researchers were
working on new materials to replace plastics, when they made the discovery.
At the time, a member of the team had been looking at using fungus materials for use in other
areas. This work led to the latest study, which shows how Ganoderma lucidum(灵芝) skin could
work as an alternative.
The team discovered that Ganoderma lucidum, which grows on rotten hardwood trees, forms
a skin to protect its growth medium (the wood). “It does so in order to protect itself,”
Kaltenbrunner, one of the researchers, said, explaining that the team were able to get this
protection by removing the skin and drying it. The skin is slightly less insulating(绝缘的) than plastics, but it still works safely and successfully, with a thickness similar to paper and the ability
to stand temperatures over 200℃.
The skin has many qualities that make it different from other materials. Kaltenbrunner said,
“But most importantly, it can grow in waste wood and does not need too much energy.
“The skin is very proper because it can last a long time if kept dry, but in just a standard
family compost, it would break down entirely within two weeks or less,” he added.
While the team’s work is experimental and a long way from being brought into use, they
believe the skin could be a new alternative material for use in electronics. “There are large
amounts of waste wood,” Kaltenbrunner said, “which is a lot of food for Ganoderma lucidum.”
28. What is an advantage of the fungus skin?
A. It is thicker than plastics. B. It can stand low temperatures.
C. It is environmentally friendly. D. It can keep wet for a long time.
29. What is the researchers’ attitude to the future of the fungus skin?
A. Uncertain. B. Unfriendly. C. Flexible. D. Positive.
30. In which section of a newspaper can you read the text?
A. Geography. B. Fashion. C. Science. D. Culture.
31. What may be the best title for the text?
A. An alternative to plastics
B. A new use of a fungus skin
C. The introduction to funguses
D. The function of fungus materials

Have you ever read back something you’ve written and felt like it’s not quite as strong as
you’d like? One possible reason is that you overuse crutch words(拐杖词). So, what are crutch
words?
Crutch words are words a speaker or a writer uses without knowing it. They are usually not
needed and don’t add to the story. If someone is speaking, you’ll recognize a crutch word as a
pause, or if the speaker uses “um” or “ah” a lot. Crutch words in the conversation also include
favorite words and phrases, such as “you know”, “anyway”, “just”, “all right” and “like”. They
only give the speaker time to think before they move on to the next idea.
For writers, crutch words operate in much the same way, but instead of a pause, they’re filler
words we use because we haven’t thought the sentence through enough. They’re words that are
easy. They flow naturally into the space that could easily be occupied by a slight rewriting of a
sentence or a different word choice.
Now that you know what crutch words are, the question is how you can get rid of them. It’s
not always easy to notice your own writing quirks(怪癖), so it might take a bit of hard work to find
what yours are.
The next time you sit down to read over your writing, look carefully for repeated words or
phrases. Mark them so they’re easy to find later. Look at both an old and a new piece of writing
and compare the two. Are there phrases or words you use a lot that are common to both? If yes,
then you’ve found your crutch words.
Once you’ve known your crutch words, they’re easy to cut out later. But don’t be afraid if
you find them in your first draft. Eliminating those words is exactly what revision is for.
32. What might an article with too many crutch words be like?
A. Formal. B. Weak. C. Quality. D. Easy.
33. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Crutch words are normally unnecessary.
B. Crutch words are unavoidable.
C. Crutch words give writers time to think.
D. Crutch words give writers different word choices.
34. What does the author think about finding crutch words?
A It’s strange. B. It’s interesting.
C. It’s questionable. D. It’s a bit difficult.
35. What does the underlined word “Eliminating” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Returning. B. Removing.
C. Recording. D. Remembering.

ChatGPT, launched in November, 2022, has attracted over 100 million monthly users in just
two months, which is considered the fastest-growing consumer app. 36
ChatGPT can write emails, computer code, even academic papers and poems. 37
With various functions, it is suspected to do no good to multiple areas, above all the higher
education.
So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble?
第 5 页 共 8 页
38 Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt more
students to cheat, especially in exams. 39 Andreas Schleicher, director of education and
skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he
welcomes ChatGPT because “it gives people a chance” to concentrate less on tasks that
technology can perform equally well.
According to a survey covering more than 100 educators and over 1,000 students, one-third
of the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while
the rest supported students having access to it. The attitude of most students sees a distinct
difference. 40
As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks. What
we should focus on has shifted to better deal with the chatbot and its development.
A.They admitted having sought help from ChatGPT to complete their homework.
B.The worry is that ChatGPT could change the basic training structure of higher education.
C.By comparison, others regard it as a blessing rather than a curse.
D.It is undoubtedly a shocking achievement.
E.It is widely discussed whether and to what extent AI should be involved in a scientific article.
F.The answers varies greatly across the world.
G.Also, it has succeeded in passing different kinds of exams.

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman
with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: “How
stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said
nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered
middle school David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was
often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed.
But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to
read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A
few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his
surprise, the comment “well done” from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page
where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never
expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the
next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote
short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always
gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and
became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from
college, he had his first book published, becoming famous as a writer in his country. And he owed
his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very
different now.
注意:1. 续写的词数应为 150 左右。
2. 请按照如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the
woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures.
David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then
he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said “I couldn’t
have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her
son a stupid boy, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for
your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and
encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt
relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.

W: I found it went bad when I prepared for my lunch. Then I tried to use my computer, but I
couldn’t get a Wi-Fi signal.
M: Oh, no!
W: After that, I tried to use the cleaner.
M: Let me guess. It didn’t pick up the dirt.
W: Worse! It spread dirt around the room instead of picking it up.
M: Did you have your robot help?
W: Of course. It helped me clean the outside windows.
M: That’s really amazing!

M: I’m fine. I’m just calling to get some directions from the airport for when I come to meet you
next week.
W: OK, well … when you arrive, there is a taxi stand straight outside. It is probably your best
choice in terms of getting to my office from the airport. There is a bus as well which costs you
only $5.
M: OK, but you’d recommend a taxi, would you?
W: Yeah.
M: OK, and how much do you think that would cost?
W: About $20. And it should take you more than 30 minutes to get to the office.
M: So I will have plenty of time to make our three o’clock meeting, then.
W: Oh, yes.
M: Great! Thanks very much. Bye!
W: No worries. Look forward to seeing you.

W: When are you going to Europe? Next week?
M: Yes. I’m leaving Los Angeles on Monday. Then I’ll work with Tanya Dolan in the London
office the next day. I’m meeting my manager Sue Redman on Wednesday, and then I’m going to
Paris.
W: Really? Why are you going to Paris? On business?
M: No. I’m taking a break. I’m having two days off.
W: Good idea. So, how are you traveling to Paris? Are you driving?
M: No, I’m taking a train.
W: Oh, right.
M: Then I’m staying in Paris for two nights.
W: Great. So how will you go back to LA from Paris?
M: I’m going back to London on the train first. Then I’m flying home on Saturday afternoon.
W: OK.
M: I’m arriving in LA at midnight.
W: So is it a non-stop flight between LA and London?
M: No, I’m not flying direct. I’m by way of LA, New York, and London. Then, on the flight home,
I’m changing in Chicago.

M: Hi, my name’s Sam Conti and my job is making and selling chocolate. People often ask
how I got into this business. Well, my parents wanted me to study medicine or economics at
university, but at the time I thought law might open more doors, so that’s what I did. But life
doesn’t always work out the way you plan it. After college, I spent one year in South America,
where I fell in love with growing cocoa beans. It is not an easy job, because cocoa beans can be
easily affected by weather—much more than other fruit like apples or bananas. In fact, the beans
are more like grapes, so each year’s crop is of a different quality.
When I came home, I decided to open a small shop making and selling my own chocolate.
That was hard work I can tell you, because so much can go wrong with chocolate. The hardest bit
is melting it in the right way, but cooling it correctly isn’t easy either. To learn the trade, I set
about testing all the chocolate I could find. Another thing I like to do is write up my experiments. I
keep a diary for this. It’s the key to my success.
