    Lesson Content:

    Describe people's actions

    Text analysis:

    1. This lesson is divided into three parts around the theme context: the first part discusses the function and meaning of the present participle as adverbial and Object complement, and let students find more examples. In the second part, choose words to fill in the blanks and have students use appropriate forms of verbs to fill in the blanks. The third part reads the story of Bethune, rewrites underlined sentences with present participles, and learns to use present participles in practical contexts.

    2. Use verb present participles to describe people's daily activities and enrich the content of the topic.

    3. This class is to recognize the characteristics of the present participle, choose words to fill in the blank, and rewrite sentences, to reflect the contextualization of grammar learning, to practice the use of the present participle as adverbial and Object complement, and to describe people's daily life.

    Lesson objectives

    1. Learn the usage of the present participle as adverbial and Object complement in the context by describing people's activities.

    2. Obtain more information about the thematic context of this unit and deepen our understanding of the meaning of the theme.

    2. Use present participles to describe people's activities.

    Step I Learning and Understanding

    Activity 1: Identifying Grammar(The functions and meanings of -ing form)

    1. Ask students to read the sentences below and discuss the function and meaning of each -ing form.

    (1)….her brother complained,thinking of the high tuition fees.(作状语)

    (2)Thinking of all the people still in need of help,Dr Lin opened a private clinic.(作状语)

    (3)The new People's Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role(作宾语补足语)

    2.Ask students to find more sentences containing -ing form from the text on Page 16~17, and discuss the major functions of them.

    Activity 4: Situational Practice(Rewrite)

    Ask students to read the story on Page 18 and rewrite the underlined parts using the -ing form.

    Henry Norman Bethune was a Canadian doctor with a very creative mind and a determination to help people. As a small boy, he became very interested in medicine and decided to become a doctor. After he graduated from medical college in 1916, Bethune worked as a doctor in England, the US, and Canada. He reinvented or redesigned over 10 medical instruments to make them more useful.In1938, Bethune left for China after he heard that many people were dying in the war. Despite the difficult situation, Dr Bethune did whatever he could to assist the Chinese people. He helped to organise hospitals, taught doctors and nurses, and showed people how to give first aid. Sadly, Dr Bethune passed away in November the following year and was buried in Shijiazhuang. After Dr Bethune's death, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote an article in memory of him, in which he praised Dr Bethune as a hero to be remembered in China.
