BThe first essay I wrote for my history of English class was perfect, at least from my perspective. I had worked on it constantly and couldn’t wait to get my grade back. I handed it in with pride. Two weeks later, I received my grade: a D.The pages were covered in red writing, pointing out errors. There must have been a mistake. University started later for me than most. The opportunity wasn’t available when I was younger — too many kids in our family and too little money. But I never stopped wondering what university would have been like. I was in my 40s when I sent in my application and as a part-time student, I will be in my 60s before I’m finished. That’s my goal. What’s it like to be the old guy in a class full of 20-year-olds? It’s strange. They pretty much ignored me, and I ignored them. They also ignored each other. However, after we had more group work together, people started to communicate. Although I was an English major, some of my favorite classes were unrelated electives. Courses in art history and Greek and Roman history were fascinating. I was eager to do well. I arranged a meeting to discuss my essay grade and arrived 10 minutes early to meet the teacher’s assistant. I was ready to argue for the brilliance of my paper. However, she quickly explained to me that the paper failed to make a strong argument. The mark remained. While I kept studying and kept learning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose. University is different when you are a senior, part-time student. If you are there to establish a career or because your parents force you to go, there are other pressures. For me, it’s just learning. Whether I’m learning remotely or in person, it makes the world a bigger, richer place.24.How did the writer feel after receiving the grade of his first essay?A.Hopeless. B.Pleased. C.Excited. D.Surprised.25.Why did the writer start university later than others?A.His application was refused.B.His teacher disliked his essay.C.His health did not meet the standard.D.His family was not rich enough.26.What helped the writer in writing a proper academic essay?A.Strong curiosity. B.Constant efforts.C.Great pressure. D.Remarkable creativity.27.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Practice Makes Perfect.B.Not All That Shines Is Gold.C.Where There Is A Will, There Is A Way.D.Action Speaks Louder Than Words. CA good conversation should proceed like a tennis match: players each take turns responding, knowing instinctively (本能) when to speak and when to listen. This kind of complicated and back-and-forth talk is often considered to be possessed only by humans. However, according to a recent study, animals also seem to know when to speak and when to listen. The study involved over 300 animals including birds, mammals (哺乳动物), insects, and frogs which practice turn-taking behavior. These animals alternate their call and response in a similar way humans communicate. Monkeys, for example, often exchange calls to locate each other in the wild and figure out whether they know one another. While forms of communication are mostly sound-based, several species have more creative forms of viewable communication. Baby monkeys let their parents know they want to be carried with arm gestures, while birds, insects and frogs can get their messages across through colorful displays.Kobin Kendrick, the main co-author on the study, says that making comparisons among animals that take tums when communicating can give us a better understanding of how this feature evolved in humans and our ancestors. “We know very little about the evolution and origin of the human language, so any possibility of gaining insight into it is worth going after,” he says.Additionally, while the idea of turn-taking might bring to mind a picture of orderly, well-mannered animals, Kendrick stresses that this isn’t always the case. Owl (猫头鹰) chicks may try to outdo each other by making louder sounds in an effort to attract favor from their mothers during feeding. “This can be seen as an exception to the rule, highlighting the importance of turn-taking in general,” says Kendrick. One problem with the study is that researchers themselves don’t know how to communicate with others outside their particular species of interest. Kendrick stresses another goal of the study is to create a wider framework that can bring together all the different researches on turn-taking, allowing scientists to conduct more cross-species comparisons. “We all believe strongly these fields can benefit from each other, and we hope the study will drive more crosstalk between humans and animals in the future,” says Kendrick.28.What can we learn about the turn-taking behavior?A.It is a unique human quality.B.It is an acquired athletic skill.C.It occurs between familiar relations.D.It features complexity and interaction.29.Which of the following is a form of visual intercommunication?A.Frogs show skin colors.B.Bees release smells.C.Eagles scream in the sky.D.Monkeys exchange calls.30.Why are “owl chicks” mentioned in paragraph 5?A.To propose a definition.B.To give a contrast.C.To present an argument.D.To make a prediction.31.What aspect of research does the last paragraph highlight?A.Research budget.B.Research range.C.Research frequency.D.Research background. DWe have long been attracted by quick solutions that could increase our intelligence. Today, people’s hopes lie in brain training apps, some of which claim to result in “smarter minds”. But is this quick solution all it is said to be? There are plenty of brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic (算术), memory tests and logic and pattern-matching problems into quick games. Some apps tell us that the more you play these mini-games, the smarter you will get. It is really a big promise. Many of the apps say they are based on “science”, a claim I found surprising as a former neuroscientist (神经系统科学家). The concept that increasing intelligence would be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every day flies in the face of what we have discovered about how humans think and learn. After surveying thousands of users across a wide variety of apps, researchers at Western University in Canada discovered that brain training had no great effect on cognitive (认知的) functioning in the real world. The positive effects that have been found are limited to the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained on, such as the ability to memorize lists of words or numbers, or perform mental arithmetic, with little benefit to other skills. If you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or make a complex computer program, I am afraid you will want to look elsewhere. Puzzle video games such as “Baba Is You” and “Return of the Obra Dinn”, see players apply their skill at logic, memory and concentration in a far more complex way than any brain training mini-game.32.What does the author say about brain training apps?A.They have scientific support. B.They work in the form of games.C.They require problem-solving skills. D.They are based on complex arithmetic.33.What does the underlined part “flies in the face of” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Goes into details of. B.Takes advantage of.C.Goes against. D.Comes from.34.Which best describes the effects that brain training apps have on memory?A.Limited. B.Indirect. C.Damaging. D.Far-reaching.35.What is the author’s attitude to “Baba Is You”?A.Doubtful. B.Intolerant. C.Uninterested. D.Favorable.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。What a comedian can teach you about managing stressWe often accept stress as part of the cost of modern life, but it really doesn’t have to be. We all know that laughter is the best medicine. ____36____ People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger. Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress. You can try to find a different perspective. ____37____ Once a friend of mine fell asleep in the middle of a class. His teacher decided to make fun of him by inviting students to applaud, wondering whether my friend would applaud along when he woke up. He did and the whole class burst outlaughing. After learning everything, he was both embarrassed and ashamed of course but after a while, my friend laughed. “If this had happened to someone else, it would have been amusing. So it’s no less funny, just because it happened to me. “____38____ There’s no doubt that we all experience great stress now and then. We’ve all been personally affected, in some way. You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane (神志正常的) . When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth. ____39____ Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. ____40____A.Always share a good story.B.Why not do what comedians do?C.You can also look again and laugh.D.But laughter does more than cheer you up.E.Then you are able to make a simple choice.F.In this way. you will say goodbye to stress forever.G.If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出适合填入对应空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Maria Andrejczyk went through serious struggles before reaching the platform for Olympic medalists.
