And now, in local news, a small, decorated bowl bought at a New Haven yard sale last year has recently been sold at Sotheby’s for more than 20,000 times its original price. The bowl was a lucky find by a man, who paid just $35 for the piece. He obviously assumed there was something special about this bowl, because he later emailed photographs to experts at Sotheby’s, asking its possible value.
The experts quickly determined that the bowl was from ancient China, dating back to the Ming Dynasty of the early 1400s. Only six bowls of this kind are known to existed in the whole world, and almost all are in museums in Taipei and London.
They said that it was worth between $300,000 and $500,000 as part of Sotheby’s Important Chinese Art sale, the bowl went beyond the range and it reached an amazing$721,800.
Sotheby’s experts date the bowl to the time of the Yongle Emperor, who ruled China from 1403 to 1424. After hearing about this story, I for one will definitely be keeping my eyes open at the next yard sale I go to!

Four TV Shows to Watch on New Year's Eve
If you are finding yourself on New Year's Eve without any plans, or you just want to start the New Year with a show you haven't watched before, here are four great TV shows to stream. Click here.
    Acapulco
Searching for light-hearted laughs and want a unique concept? Acapulco is the show for you. As we reported when the series first dropped, Acapulco follows the story of Maximo Gallardo, whose life changes when he starts working in a resort in Acapulco, Mexico. The series stars Julian Sedgwick, Rossana De Leon, Lobo Elias, Sofia Ruiz, and Eugenio Derbez.
    The Shrink Next Door
This show will make you angry and anxious, but most brilliant shows do! The Shrink Next Door is based on true events that happened to a patient, Marty (Will Ferrell) who forms a close bond with his psychiatrist, one that the psychiatrist (Paul Rudd) took advantage of.
    Ted Lasso Season 2
We have all heard about Ted Lasso, whether you've seen it or not. What are you waiting for? Stop being so stubborn and watch it! Ted Lasso is a gut-punch of emotions you won't see coming. It's a comedy and a silly one, but it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to hard-hitting topics such as mental health. And if you're searching for something that won't take all weekend, Ted Lasso is perfect!

I feel like See is a bit underrated (被低估的) and it truly shouldn’t be. The story is fun, as well as the action and characters, and season 2 does a great job at keeping us guessing and holding our interest. The world of See is set in a distant future in which humans have lost their sight after a virus swept the world. Humanity has adapted and having vision is only a myth.

A series of massive thunder storms hit our area recently, causing flash flooding and knocking down tree branches and even trees. I had spent the afternoon picking up branches out of my yard and throwing them away. Then just before I was getting ready to take my dogs for their last walk of the day, the warnings came on my television and over my phone that another of these storms was heading our way.
I quickly took my dogs outside. Huge clouds were rolling in while thunder boomed over the hills. I knew that the stars were shining but I certainly couldn’t see them. The darkness seemed darker and scarier than usual because I knew what was on the way. That was when I saw it. The tiniest blink of light, up high, at the far end of the grassland behind my house. I smiled. The first of the fireflies had appeared for the summer at just the time I needed to see his light. Soon a few others were blinking their lights as well. It amazed me how far their light traveled in the darkness of the night and how they didn’t seem bothered at all by the approaching storm. I spent an extra few minutes watching my lightening bug friends and taking in their message of light before heading in to get ready for the storm. As I did, though, I noticed that the darkness no longer seemed so scary and that my fear had been replaced with joy.
Life does have its share of storms, some caused by nature and some caused by us. We can’t go through life being scared of them, however. Take a lesson from the fireflies then. Let your light shine. It may seem tiny but you will be amazed at how far it can be seen and how easily it can drive the dark away.
    24. What happened when the author was about to walk the dog?
    A. His house was heavily damaged. B. He was encouraged to pick up the branches.
    C. He was broadcasting a bad weather warning. D. Another big storm was broadcasted to be on its way.
    25. Which of the following can best describe the huge clouds?
    A. Normal. B. Frightening. C. Pale. D. High.
    26. Why did the author smile when he saw the tiniest blink of light?
    A. There would be no storm at all. B. He could then walk his dog easier.
    C. He found great hope from the dark. D. He wasn’t afraid of being lost then.
    27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. We should always give off light when in trouble. B. Small light in life won’t help much in our life.
    C. Some great troubles won’t be easily dealt with. D. We should avoid being disturbed by trouble.
D 25. B 26. C 27. A

When it comes to becoming eco-conscious, many people choose to start with something simple: recycling. But it’s not as simple as everyone seems to believe.
Indeed, the desire for some people to recycle can lead to ill-informed decisions about what can and cannot be recycled, and non-recyclable objects are accidentally put into the recycling bin. The practice is what is known as wishcycling.
Wishcycling boils down to the idea that just about anything can be recycled, and that if you put it into a recycling bin, those who are responsible for it will find a way to recycle it. This is obviously not true, because, despite everything that you’ve been told by the media, not everything is recyclable.
Small non-recyclable objects that are attached to recyclables are generally acceptable. For example, glue and tape attached to paper will be removed in the recycling process without any trouble. But improperly recycling broken eyeglasses, plastic shopping bags, food waste and greasy(油渍)pizza boxes could cause problems to the recycling process.
The objects in the recycling bin are typically sorted by machines at recycling centers, not people. These complex machines are designed to separate plastics, paper, and other recyclables. If something is thrown into the bin that shouldn’t be there, it could end up damaging the machine, which means the recycling center could lose time and money every time people decide to wishcycle. Sometimes, a non-recyclable object is able to sneak(溜)past these sorting machines. If this happens, the non-recyclable object ends up in a load of recyclables that will be sold for the recycling center to make a profit. However, having just one non-recyclable thing mixed in can pollute the entire load of recyclables, which has to be thrown away.
So what you as a consumer need to do is make your own recycling practice most functional. The best way is to educate yourself. There are certain general rules when it comes to recycling that everyone should know.
    28. What do we know about wishcycling?
    A. It is misled by the media. B. it leads to a better ecology.
    C. It is related to ill intentions. D. It comes from people's hope.
    29. Which of the following can be put into the recycling bin according to the passage?
    A. Paper with glue on it. B. Oily pizza boxes.
    C. Plastic shopping bags. D. Left-over food.
    30. What is paragraph 5 about?
    A. The problems from wishcycling. B. The need to update the machines.
    C. The reasons for making less profit. D. The objects unsuitable for recycling.
    31. What might be talked about in the paragraph that follows?
    A. Reducing waste. B. Making rules.
    C. Recycling properly. D. Consuming wisely.
D 29. A 30. A 31. C
根据第二段“Indeed, the desire for some people to recycle can lead to ill-informed decisions about what can and cannot be recycled, and non-recyclable objects are accidentally put into the recycling bin. The practice is what is known as wishcycling.(事实上,一些人想要参与回收的愿望可能会导致关于什么可以回收,什么不可以回收的错误决定,不可回收的东西会不小心被扔进回收箱。这种做法被称为愿望循环)”可知,wishcycling是指人们不考虑东西是否可以回收,按照自己的意愿进行回收。故选D。
    【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“Small non-recyclable objects that are attached to recyclables are generally acceptable. For example, glue and tape attached to paper will be removed in the recycling process without any trouble. (附在可回收物品上的小型不可回收物品一般是可以接受的。例如,粘在纸上的胶水和胶带在回收过程中会被移除,没有任何麻烦)”可知,有胶水的纸是可以放到可回收垃圾桶的。故选A。
根据本段的主要内容,尤其“If something is thrown into the bin that shouldn’t be there, it could end up damaging the machine, which means the recycling center could lose time and money every time people decide to wishcycle. Sometimes, a non-recyclable object is able to sneak(溜)past these sorting machines. If this happens, the non-recyclable object ends up in a load of recyclables that will be sold for the recycling center to make a profit. However, having just one non-recyclable thing mixed in can pollute the entire load of recyclables, which has to be thrown away.(如果一些不该扔进(回收)垃圾箱的东西被扔进了进去,最终可能会损坏机器,这意味着每次人们决定wishcycling时回收中心就会浪费时间和金钱。有时候,一个不可回收的物体能够从这些分拣机器中偷偷溜走。如果发生这种情况,这些不可回收的物体最终会和一堆可回收的东西被出售给回收中心以获取利润。然而,只要掺有一种不可回收的东西就可能污染全部的可回收物,必须全部扔掉)”可知,本段主要介绍了wishcyling给回收中心带来的一些问题。故选A。
结合上文讲述wishcycling带来的一些问题,和最后一段的“There are certain general rules when it comes to recycling that everyone should know.(当涉及到回收利用时,有一些大家都应该知道的一般规则)”推知,下文可能会介绍如何进行正确的回收。故选C。
    D
With over 4. 1 billion people, or around 55 percent of the world’s population, living in urban areas, cities and towns worldwide are getting increasingly congested. In addition to spending many hours stuck in traffic, residents are also exposed to high air pollution levels caused by transportation emissions. Now, Saudi Arabia hopes to revolutionize urban living with “The Line”— a city designed around nature, without cars and roads!
“The Line” is designed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). Located in NEOM — a 10,000-square-mile high-tech planned development on the Red Sea coast in the northwestern Saudi province of Tabu — The Line will be the cornerstone of MBS s Saudi Vision 2030. The plan aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s oil-dependent economy into other sectors, like tourism, and create exciting job opportunities for its citizens.
The 105-mile-long city, expected to cost between $100 billion and $200 billion, will be built along a straight line and is made up of several self-sustaining communities. To ensure all services are within a short, five-minute walk, each community will feature a three-layer infrastructure
The top “pedestrian layer” will be void of cars and roads, allowing residents to freely walk and bike in the surrounding green spaces. The second “service layer”, will include all essential daily services, such as schools, leisure facilities and grocery stores. The third “spine layer” will house high-speed subway and autonomous vehicles capable of transporting residents across communities in less than 20 minutes. The entire city will be powered with renewable clean energy sources such as solar and wind, and possibly even hydrogen.
If all goes according to plan t construction of this complex project will start before the 1st quarter of 2021. In addition to providing up to a million residents with a clean and stress-free living environment, The Line is expected to create 380,000 new jobs, start economic diversification, and contribute an astounding $ 48 billion to Saudi Arabia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. More importantly, MBS believes it will provide governments worldwide a “blueprint for how people and planet can co-exist in harmony.”
    32. We can infer that “The Line” will be_________.
    A. temporary B. primitive C. eco-friendly D. conventional
    33. What is The Line meant to result in?
    A. Low crime rates. B. High unemployment.
    C. Super communities. D. Diverse economic sectors.
    34. What can be found on the second layer?
    A. Medical clinics. B. Bus stops.
    C. Underground trains. D. Cycling lanes.
    35. Which of the following is the best title?
    A. Saudi Arabia Has Created A Green City With No Cars Or Streets
    B. “The Line” Will Be The Cornerstone Of MBS's Saudi Vision 2030
    C. “The Line”— Blueprint Of People And Animals Co-existing In Harmony
    D. Saudi Arabia Announces “The Line”— A Low Carbon City Without Cars
C 33. D 34. A 35. D

What makes you cry? Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. ___36___
When you think about it, shedding tears from your eyes can cause embarrassment or confusion. But it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad or upset. ___37___ However, the feeling is the same – your cheeks puff up, your eyes tighten and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may weep a little while others might cry like a baby.
A study in the UK in 2017 found that women admitted they cry 72 times a year. This was, on average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been pretty much consistent with previous research. ___38___Are they just more embarrassed about showing their true feelings? The debate continues.
One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace.___39___ Someone might be stressed with a heavy workload. And, as therapist Joanna Cross put it, “crying is often a build-up of frustration and undealt-with situations and it’s a bit of a final straw moment.” She describes how someone might start weeping when they’re just asked to make a cup of tea. Actually, their stress has accumulated to the breaking point.
But crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. It can actually make you feel better.___40___Crying your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often.
    A. Then how do we cope with it?
    B. This can be where emotions run high.
    C. People reach their breaking point in different ways.
    D. We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?
    E. Maybe it dissolves or clears the negative feelings you’ve had.
    F. What brings about this reaction differs from person to person.
    G. But does this mean men don’t get as upset or emotional as women?
D 37. F 38. G 39. B 40. E
上文提到“Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our face”(被电影感动,和爱人分离,与搭档分道扬镳都会导致眼泪流下脸庞),本空承上启下,引出文章主题,所以根据下文内容,“crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. ”(在办公室或其他地方哭可能是一种有效的减压方式),可知本文主要讲哭是所有人的反应,并且哭对人们有好处,所以本空目的在于引出此话题。故选D。
    【37题详解】
根据上句“ it seems to be an automatic reaction when we get sad or upset”(哭是我们伤心难过时的自动反应),所以本空承接上句,F项句意“造成人们伤心难过的原因是各不相同的”,符合语境。故选F。
根据上句“women admitted they cry 72 times a year. This was, on average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been pretty much consistent with previous research.”(女性承认,她们一年哭72次,这平均来说比男人要多。
上句提到“One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace”(我们经历情绪爆发的地点之一是在工作地),本空承接上文,应该接着讲工作地对人们情绪的影响,所以B项句意“工作地是情绪上涨之地”符合句意。

主语为that image,用is believed。故填is believed。

故填which。

Dear Mike,
Having signed up for a voluntary activity, I’m terribly sorry for not being able to tour the museum with you this Saturday. Therefore, I’ writing to express my sincere apology for the inconvenience caused all of sudden.
As you know, I’ve been waiting for a chance to devote myself to raising public awareness of environmental protection. Consequently, when the opportunity to volunteer came, I seized it without hesitation. On that day, all the volunteers will put up posters about how to lead a low-carbon lifestyle and pick up the trash along the roads, which will take a whole day. Considering that, I am afraid that I won’t keep my word. It is possible for us to fix another date when you are available.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It's really amazing. ”
“Well,” Jane shrugged (耸) her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I'll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn't look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I cannot walk that far. ”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I'll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I'm ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I'm still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone,” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with indescribably wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight. “Anyone still wants her phone?” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let's hike around the lake today.” Sure, get our backpack then, I beamed, relieved and joyful.
