Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot of changes. For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life.
Goal setting
When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, remember they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller, more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.
Interpersonal skills
At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.
Studying
With fewer in-class hours and more on-your— own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.
Budgeting
Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings... and the fun stuff (movies, dinners out), too.
21. Who is this passage most probably written for?
A. College teachers. B. University graduates.
C. High school teachers. D. Would-be college students.
22. What is the key to successful college study according to the author?
A. Being well-organized. B. Being well-informed.
C. Effective reading skills. D. Reliable research methods.
23. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is _____.
A. save money for financial investment B. estimate one’s income and expenses
C. set aside money for fun activities D. open a personal bank account
B
Staff at the Thai Dynasty restaurant in Singapore never thought they’d receive such a huge tip during the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), when economic condition seemed hard, let alone one as big as $600. But believe it or not, they did.
What was more surprising, however, was the person who left that massive tip for them. It wasn’t from a customer who was feeling extra generous that day. No, it was Jesse, a food delivery rider who came by to pick up an online order.
Being a familiar face among the staff due to frequent orders from the restaurant, the delivery rider wanted to show his best appreciation for their hard work in ensuring orders are prepared on time every time he comes by to pick something up. Along with the tip, he also left a heartfelt written note.
“Hello! I am writing to you all because I am very happy with your food and friendly customer service,” the note starts. “I want to say that your food is really delicious. You know, every day when I’m working, I see you all working so hard, which makes me feel proud of you all. Working is not easy, and I understand that because I am also working. Therefore, I want to thank you all for the good food and I want to help you all. Here inside is $600, for all of you. Share it among yourselves. Thank you once again!”
Speaking to Shin Min Daily, Thai Dynasty director Jason Pay said he never expected such a thing from a delivery rider, despite Jesse being a familiar face. “Employees are allowed to keep the tips for their good service, but they chose to return it, which I’m touched by,” Pay said.
Yes, they managed to return the super generous tip when Jesse swung by a few hours later to pick up another order. But seeing the hard work that the delivery rider highlighted in his staff, Pay decided to reward them the next day with pizza and other dishes for lunch.
24. What does the underlined word “It” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. The tip. B. An note. C. A stranger. D. An order.
25. What impressed Jesse most about the restaurant?
A. The delicious food. B. The familiar faces.
C. The generous customers. D. The positive working attitude.
26. What did the staff do to show their appreciation?
A. They told the story to the newspaper.
B. They gave back the tip to the delivery rider.
C. They helped the delivery rider get more orders.
D. They treated the rider with delicious pizza and other dishes.
27. Which saying can describe the text best?
A. Experience must be bought.
B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
C. A hero is known in the time of misfortune.
D. Everyone’s love will make the world a better place.
C
Tropical(热带的)birds deep in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest are shrinking as the world’s climate changes. Researchers studied data for 77 tropical bird species over the past 40 years and found that all of them had lost body mass, with some species losing nearly 2% of their weight per decade.
A 2019 study of birds that had crashed into buildings in Chicago, Illinois, found that they’d lost mass over a 40-year period, but those species were migratory(迁徙的). However, why the birds changed in that way was unknown. Therefore, researchers decided to examine the records of 15, 000 non-migratory birds living in a rainforest within a few hours’ drive from Manaus in Brazil.
The average temperature of the birds’ habitat is 1℃ warmer in the wet season and 1. 65℃ warmer in the dry season compared with that in 40 years ago. What’s more, 13% more rain falls in the wet season and 15% less in the dry season. The birds have lost mass more sharply following extremely dry or wet seasons. This could be a short-term response to changes in their environment, such as a lack of rainfall causing a decline in the number of insects that the birds feed on.
“Mass is a generally good indication of body condition in birds, says Vitek Jirinec at the Integral Ecology Research Center in California, who led the study. "If they’re simply not getting enough to eat, you’d expect them to lose weight.”
Birds of the same species are generally larger at higher latitudes. The leading theory is that their smaller surface-area-to-volume ratio(表面积和体积比)allows them to better conserve heat. The opposite would help smaller species in hot climates to cool and could explain why birds are getting smaller as the climate warms, says Jirinec.
The marked physical change during just four decades show why stopping destroying trees alone won’t prevent the ongoing extinctions of animal species across the world, says Camila Gomez, a scientist who studies evolutionary changes in birds. "This study also shows how human-caused changes in climate are contributing to observed population declines in tropical birds," says Gomez.
28. Why did the researchers study the non-migratory birds?
A. To make the conclusion of the 2019 study.
B. To prepare them for their future migration.
C. To find the reason for their physical change.
D. To seek a way to save the Amazon rainforest.
29. What is the birds’ habitat studied by researchers like?
A. High temperatures are rarely seen. B. It seems much drier in wet seasons.
C. Weather patterns get more extreme. D. Rainfall is increased in dry seasons,
30. What does Vitek Jirinec think of the birds’ shrinking?
A. It enables them to hide easily. B. It makes them feel less cold.
C. It keeps them in good shape. D. It helps them lose extra heat.
31. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Global Warming Leads to Population Declines in Birds
B. Climate Change Is Causing Some Birds to Lose Weight
C. Tropical Birds Are Struggling to Survive Dry Climates
D. Migratory Birds Are Experiencing Big Physical Changes
D
We all try to spend our days doing engaging things, but the reality is that there’s a lot of boring work which also must be done. Whether it’s washing the dishes, filing papers, entering data, or any of the countless dull yet critical tasks that keep our homes, organizations, and communities running, we all have less-than-exciting tasks we have to do. Of course it’s not always easy to get ourselves to stick to these tasks, even if we know we should. What does it take to persist (坚持) when work is boring?
Researchers have explored this question from many angles and studies have shown that people may persist longer when they monitor their progress, receive rewards, or when a task is made more fun. These findings have direct effects on how we design products and policies. For instance, companies are increasingly offering incentives to encourage employees to get more exercise, and managers are carrying out various game strategies to make employees’ work more fun.
Recent research by Harvard University, however, suggests that for tasks that don’t require a lot of attention, there may be a better approach. Researchers conducted a series of studies with over 2,000 participants and found that in many cases, people stop working on tasks earlier than expected not because they aren’t motivated enough, but because the tasks do not need enough attention.
Often, strategies designed to increase persistence will involve changing something about the work itself — but you can only make washing the dishes so exciting or mentally stimulating (振奋人心的). Rather than endlessly attempting to make boring tasks less boring, it can sometimes be more effective instead to pair these activities with other tasks that require more attention. This concept is called tangential immersion (切入式专注法).
Basically, the mind seeks to be engaged. We experience boredom when doing tasks that require less attention than we have available, and this leads us to quit those tasks too early. But if there is a second activity in which we can involve ourselves at the same time with the low-attention task, it can occupy that extra attention, reducing boredom and thus increasing persistence.
32. In what circumstance may people continue with a boring task?
A. When they are full of energy. B. When they want to kill time.
C. When they feel motivated. D. When they lack attention.
33. What does the underlined word “incentives” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Instructions. B. Positions. C. Programmes. D. Rewards.
34. Why did the participants quit their tasks earlier than expected?
A. The tasks were beyond them. B. The studies took too much time.
C. The participants were not devoted. D. The tasks demanded less attention.
35. How can we focus on a boring task according to tangential immersion?
A. By making it more challenging. B. By pairing it with a demanding one.
C. By refreshing the mind regularly. D. By checking the progress repeatedly.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的七个选项中选出五个可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You run into the grocery store to pick up one bottle of water. You get what you need, head to the front, and choose the line that looks fastest.
You chose wrong. People who you swear got in other lines long after you are already checked out and off to the parking lot. 36
It turns out, it's just math working against you; chances are, the other line really is faster.
Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay. 37 Any small interruption---a price check, a chatty customer---can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.
If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers. Think about the probability: 38 So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.
Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem. Make all customers stand in one long, snaking line ---called a serpentine line---and serve each person at the front with the next available register. 39 This is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.
40 It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower. So wherever your next wait may be: Good luck.
A. Why does this always seem to happen to you?
B. So why don't most places encourage serpentine lines?
C. Some of them may have stood in a queue for almost an hour.
D. The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.
E. How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line?
F. With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.
G. But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.

It was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. I dragged myself out of the bed and all of the routines began early. I dropped my two older children at school with relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy groceries with my youngest. I wasn't feeling any sense of appreciation for my comfortable home or lovely family.
I was getting mad with this early day, and my son, just four years old at that time, was being difficult. I raced around to pick the items with no regard to cost, while trying to control my naughty child whose behavior had now added to my complete displeasure. Yes, I was that mother, threatening, and roaring at a small child.
We eventually made it to the checkout and stood in the queue waiting for our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us. I turned and saw an old man. He wore a dirty overcoat. His shoes were worn out, and his trousers tapped around sockless ankles on this cold, wet day. In his hands he just carried a small box of longlife milk.
I had too many groceries. I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me. It wasn't an act of kindness on my part, also not my automatic reaction. Perhaps I just did out of a sense of guilt, or I just wanted him gone. After all, his presence made me uncomfortable. In the same way, I felt uncomfortable and avoided my eyes when passing a homeless person.
He didn't respond to me as if I had said nothing to him. I looked at him and repeated my words. This time, I was sure that he had heard what I said.

Dear Eric,
We’re going to do some voluntary work this Sunday morning in our neighborhood. I m writing to invite you to join us.
Started by Student Union, this activity is aimed at helping people in need. We will do many things like helping the disabled and the old, or raising public awareness of environmental protection. I know you’ve always been hoping to get close to local people, and this is a good opportunity for you to practice your oral Chinese with the locals.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
He looked surprised and uncertain. He asked with hesitation, “Madam, are you sure?” “Sure!” I confirmed, nodding at him unwillingly. He went ahead slowly, paid for the milk, and took his change. Then, to my amazement, he turned to my child and pressed the change into his hand. Without any more words, he turned around and before I realized it, he had already disappeared into the crowds. At the moment, I found myself filled with great guilt but greatly moved. I quickly paid all my groceries, rushed out with my son and looked around anxiously, hoping that I could spot him. There was only one thing I wanted to do.
I had to find him and gave back the change. Fortunately, the moment we were out of the supermarket, an old man with a dirty overcoat and sockless ankles caught my attention. It was him! I ran to him, pressing the change back into his hand together with a bag of bread. I also expressed my gratitude sincerely. This time, I no longer felt uncomfortable but warm instead. We exchanged glances and both smiled. The light in his eyes reminded me how lucky I was and how grateful I should be, not only for the comfortable home but also my lovely family. With the gentle breeze softly kissing my face, I went home with my now lovely child gratefully.

M: Did you like the food?
W: It wasn’t terrible, but I must say that seafood isn’t really my thing.
M: That’s a shame! All that delicious, fresh fish, and nobody to appreciate it ...

M: Hi, Barbara. Have you decided where to go tomorrow?
W: Yes, I’d like to go to Camden Town to shop. Would you like to go there with me?
M: Yes, I’d love to. That’s a good market. Cindy is here with me now. She wants to go there too.
W: OK. How are you going there?
M: I will go there by bus. It’s only three stops from my place. And Cindy might walk there if the weather is fine. How will you get there?
W: I think I’ll have to take the underground. I’m at Bond Street and I’ll take the Central Line first and then get off at Tottenham Court Road.
M: OK. Then you want the Northern Line to Camden Town. It’s only four stops. Make sure you get a northern train, though. OK?
W: OK. I think I shall find the way. I have an underground map with me now. What time shall we meet tomorrow?
M: How about 10:30?
W: Well, I think that’s a bit too late. It might be crowded by that time.
M: How about one hour earlier, say 9:30?
W: That will be too early. How about half an hour later?
M: OK. See you then.

W: Do you like traveling? If you do, here are some cities you shouldn’t miss.
The first is the French capital. It is often called the most beautiful city in the world. Known as the City of Light, Paris is home to some of the world’s most-visited tourist sites, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, Moulin Rouge and the Notre-Dame Cathedral. I visited the city with my family at the beginning of this year. I liked visiting the city’s many sidewalk cafés.
The second city is in my own country. And I live in it. More than 50 million people visit New York City every year. The five areas of New York have many of the most recognized attractions in the world. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to get a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline, or observe the city from the top of the Empire State Building. Eat famous New York pizza.
The third city is London, where my father was born. It is a world capital of culture and fashion. It is also one of the world’s leading financial centers. Visitors can visit the rooms in Buckingham Palace, the official home of the Queen of England. When I visited it last year, I visited the Sherlock Holmes Museum. I also walked across Abbey Road, just like the band The Beatles did in 1969. I also checked the time at the famous clock tower, Big Ben.
