Have you ever had trouble pronouncing a common English word correctly or finding English practice partners in your own city or country? If so, the following four American English pronunciation apps will help.
Say It: Pronunciation
Users of this app developed by Oxford University Press can practice more than 35,000 words. It can record your voice and then create a waveform from your voice, which you can compare to that of the model speaker. A marker shows which part of each word to stress.
The app offers a free version. But its usability is limited. You would need to buy the paid version to get full use of the app, which costs $6.99.
ELSA Speak
ESLA Speak uses artificial intelligence( AI) to act as your own pronunciation teacher. This app
offers a speaking test with detailed results and a score. And its AI software lets you have conversations with the computer and get assessment.
The app has a free 7-day trial version. After that, you would need to pay for the full version.
Prices range from $0.99 to $99.
Accent Training
This app centers on a few important elements of pronunciation, including reduced speech,
intonation and connected speech.
The app is free, but unwanted ads show up often. You can choose whether to pay $2. 99 to
remove them.
English Pronunciation Tutor
This app developed by Language Arts Press is useful if there are specific sounds in English that give you continuous trouble.
The app is free for the first unit only. After that, you would pay $5. 99 to activate the full
version.
None of these apps can replace real-life speaking practice. But if you are in serious need of
pronunciation support, try them.

I had the meanest(吝啬的) mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal eggs and toast. Others had Cokes and candy for lunch, while I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We felt embarrassed because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor
Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would only be content with the black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I'm mean because now I thank the meanest mother in the world every day.
24. From the text we can learn that the writer's mother was .
A. not generous at all B. very mean with money matters

A. Eating differently from other kids. B. Letting mother know where they were.

A.The writer worked hard and usually got good grades in study.
B. The mother was punished for breaking the Child Labour Law.
C. All the other kids study better than the writer.
D. The writer's family lived a miserable life.
27. How is the text written?
A. In a hateful way. B. In a humorous way.
C.In a critical way. D. In an unfriendly way.

Have you ever heard someone say,“you totally look like you're a Jessica” or something similar?People seem to think that they know what kind of person a“Jessica”or a“Michael”looks like. Why is this?
According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology , humans tend to associate people's names with their appearance(外表),and can even guess someone's name based on how they look.
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, collected thousands of photos of
people's faces. They labeled each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct.
The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the time. It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them clues about someone's name, Reader's Digest reported.
However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture. In
addition, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who used nick names more often than their real names. This may show that a person's appearance is affected by their name only if they use it often.
This kind of face-name matching happens“because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy(自我实现预言),as we become what other people expect us to become.”Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website EurekAlert.
Earlier studies have shown that gender and race stereotypes( 刻板印象) can affect a person's appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example ,people tend to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be“delicate and“feminine(女性的)”,just like the flower they are named for.
32. What was the purpose of the study?
A. To find out today's most popular English names.
B. To learn how names influence personality.
C. To find out whether names relate to their looks.
D. To show how men's names are different from women's.
33. What does the underlined word “ clues”in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. lights. B. attentions. C. methods. D. hints.
34. According to Ruth Mayo, why do some people look like their names?
A. They tend to become what others expect them to become.
B. They want to please everyone around them.
C. They don't want to be different from others.
D. They like to copy famous people who share the same name.
35. What point does the last paragraph want to explain?
A. Earlier studies about stereotypes are limited.
B. Stereotypes about names can bring good results.
C. Stereotypes about names can affect people's looks.
D. It's not always bad to be influenced by the expectations of others.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went
home together. One day , Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out,“A fight! Let's go and see!"
“No,”said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."
“You are a coward(懦夫),and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored(忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school , they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth.
He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got
out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
