第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Antarctica
One of the most remote destinations on the planet, Antarctica is not an easy (or affordable) endeavor. Perhaps
the difficulty is part of the attraction — the seventh continent remains on the top of many travelers' wish lists. The striking white desert, with its dramatic, snowy peaks and vibrant turquoise waters, as well its exotic wildlife, including Emperor penguins and Weddell seals, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Hawaii
Hawaii is underrated. To be sure, it is a gorgeous place, with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and every beach seemingly prettier than the next, but its beauty goes much deeper than its preternatural appearance. Extraordinary beaches — some even boast black and green sand (Papakolea Beach and Punalu'u Beach, respectively) — have their expected appeal, but visitors who take time to venture out and away from the coast quickly discover Hawaii's charms are everywhere.
Canada
Skiing, surfing, hiking and Northern-lights sighting. Eclectic cuisine, world-class shopping, a diverse and rich culture. This is Canada. The 13 provinces and territories that make up the world's second-largest country by total area. It has something wonderful for every type of traveler. Nature lovers take solace in mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and Atlantic or Pacific coastlines while sophisticated palates nosh at Michelin-starred restaurants and hole-in-the- wall mainstays alike.
Singapore
Travelers don't want to spend any more time in an airport than they have to. But Singapore's Changi is not an ordinary airport. While the rest of the world was staying at home, Singaporean locals were paying to hang out at Changi, whether it was co-working in one of the lounges or camping alongside the world's tallest indoor waterfall at the Changi Jewel, which opened in 2019.
21.Which place would you like to choose if you are an animal lover?
A. Hawaii. B. Canada. C. Singapore. D. Antarctica.
22. What is special about Canada from the text?
A. It is the second most beautiful place in the world. B. It can almost satisfy all kinds of travelers.
C. It has some extraordinary beaches. D. It attracts many locals.
23. What can tourists do when they stay in Changi?
A. They can appreciate the world's tallest indoor waterfall.
B. They can experience Michelin-starred restaurants.
C. They can decorate the lounges together.
D. They can enjoy world-class shopping.

Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his
strict Asian parents who tutored him at a young age by working for the family.
Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn’t a strong suit for Andy’s parents, and that’s where he was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business.
Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade, when he learned about Amazon. Dropshipping (代发货
模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram, he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the store eventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business.
“The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone to believe in you,” Andy says. He pushed through and did things for himself even when his loved ones discouraged it.
In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created an Amazon management company
called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future.
When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, “Learning to sacrifice whether that’s family, friends, or
soccer game for a single goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well with no shortcuts.”
24. Why did Andy work in his parents’ shops at a young age?
A. Because he could earn some pocket money. B. Because his parents weren’t fluent in English.
C. Because his parents could help with his study. D. Because he could get access to the Internet.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. A new online business model. B. Results of working impatiently.
C. Difficulties in Andy’s career. D. Andy’s tense family relationship.
26. What does Andy think contributes to his success?
A. His early working experiences. B. Lessons learned from his failures.
C. Gaining other people’s trust. D. Focusing on one thing at a time.
27. Which of the following can best describe Andy Kong’s personality?
A. Committed and generous. B. Motivated and open-minded.
C. Creative and faithful. D. Hard-working and sociable.
C
Today, the Vikings are mostly known as violent pirates. But they were also traders. At their height, the Vikings
attacked, settled or traded on four continents.
All of their travel, trade and warfare were made possible by Viking ships, which were far more advanced than anything else sailing around Europe at the time. The most famous, and most feared, was the drekar. At sea, these ships could move quickly thanks to their large sails. The hulls (船体) of the ships were shallow and fat, which made them ride high in the water. The ships were also light enough that they could be carried from one body of water to another over short sections of land. This greatly extended their range.
But Viking ships weren’t just built for warfare. Another type, called the knarr, had cargo (货物) holds built in
the hull. One such cargo ship was capable of carrying 24 tons. The knarrs would have looked similar to the drekars except they were longer, fatter and taller. These were the backbones of the Viking empire, which they used to carry everything from gold coins to spices and fine fabrics.
Both the drekar and the knarr were built using the same method. Traditionally, oceangoing ships have used a
keel (龙骨), shaped like the fin of a fish. The keel sinks into the water below the hull. It helps the ship maintain a straight line through the water and counters the force of the wind against the sail, which otherwise might blow the ship over. Viking ships had no deep keel. Instead, they were built fat enough to carry lots of soldiers or pieces of cargo whose weight helped keep the ship planted in the water.
Viking ships were so advanced for their time that they often were the biggest, tallest and most striking ships
many people had ever seen. A monk at the St. Omar Monastery, in Franco, wrote this description of a royal Viking ship in 1013.
“On one side lions molded in gold were to be seen on the ships, on the other birds on the tops of the poles
indicated by their movements the winds as they blew…”
The Vikings built a wealthy empire through trade as well as robbery and used their wealth to continuously improve their ships.
28. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. The Vikings were not violent pirates but traders.
B. The Vikings used to take a lead in the world trade.
C. Viking ships could carry more cargo than ships today.
D. Viking ships contributed to the extension of their empire.
29. What can we infer about the knarrs?
A. They were not designed for warfare. B. They were faster than the drekars.
C. They were designed to carry soldiers. D. They served the same purpose as drekars.
30. What do the Vikings’ ships and the traditional oceangoing ships have in common?
A. They both use a deep keel shaped like the fin of a fish.
B. They both make the hull shallow and fat with large sails.
C. They both take measures to keep the ship planted in water.
D. They both install something to counter the force of wind.
31. Why does the author refer to a monk’s description of a Viking ship?
A. To show how advanced Viking ships were for their time.
B. To show how interested the monk was in traveling by sea.
C. To show that Viking ships were designed in a strange way.
D. To show that Viking ships were continuously improved.
D
Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles (纳
米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush.
Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn)in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.
The tooth-cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles
sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles. When there's a tooth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth's surface. If there's a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses.
The new device is just a proof of concept. The researcher still needs to turn it into a product that people will
want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager.
32. What is special about the tooth cleaner?
A. It's water-proof. B. It's transformable.
C. It looks like a toothbrush. D. It contains skinny bristles.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The working principle. B. The magnets' motion.
C. The virus-killing process. D. The bristles formation.
34. How does Steager feel about the future of the device?
A. Uncertain. B. Confident. C. Concerned. D. Surprised.
35. Which of the following would be the best title?
A. A Tooth-Cleaner Fighting Bacteria B.A Breakthrough in Medicine
C. A Shape-Shifting Robotic: Tooth-Cleaner D.A New Concept for a New Start

Kenneth Hansen, 46, was working late one May evening two years ago, putting the last pieces of board on a
house in Gratiot County, Michigan. He saw a boy crazily waving his arms. Then Hansen heard screaming. Standing on the back porch (门廊)of the house next door was the little boy screaming "Help!", while four dogs barked and
ran after him. Hansen knew little about the boy. After all, the boy was just visiting his grandfather during holidays.
At first, Hansen thought it was just a dogfight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they're biting something. His feeling proved right when he watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and bit at the boy's leg.
Then, Hansen realized the boy was in a great danger. He raced across the grass, jumped over a six-foot-high
fence and landed in the neighbor's yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. He screamed and yelled louder until they let go just long enough for Henson to grab the eight-year-old boy, Ethan. But he couldn't grab him under his arms, which would make it harder to run, because the boy was badly injured. Luckily, He found a long wooden stick at the corner. Henson used it to drive the dogs away and held the boy into his arms.
Hansen ran fast across the yard, and the dogs followed him. Hansen ran to the back deck (木制平台). So did
the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a courtyard door, but it wouldn't open. At that time, a dog grabbed Ethan's foot again to get him back from Hansen. Then Hansen pulled on a second door. It sprang open. He rushed
inside the house, followed closely by the dogs scratching (抓)at his legs. He opened a bedroom door a crack,
pushed Ethan in quickly, then closed it immediately.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Turning around, Hansen faced the dogs.
Months later, Ethan was fully recovered. ___
