focused on a single subject: the disappearing industrial architecture of Western Europe and North
America that fueled the modern time.
    Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast
Organized around a single object — the marble sculpture Why Born Enslaved! By French
sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux — Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast is the first exhibition

On the website of the EU Prize for Women Innovators, there are dozens of inspiring stories of
female leaders alongside pictures of these professional-looking women wearing single color business
suits. But when we move the page down a little further, Ailbhe and Izzy’s pictures pop off the page,
with their eye-catching colors and bright rainbow patterns, which is entirely in line with their
company belief “If you can’t stand up, stand out.” The fashionable sisters took the world by storm
    with their personalized wheelchair decorations.
Ailbhe, now 25, was four years old when she became a big sister to Izzy. Although Izzy was
born disabled and couldn’t move from the waist down, her courage and energy deeply impressed

Izzy’s wheelchairs and her other mobility devices. So when Ailbhe graduated from the National
College of Art and had to complete a final year project, she knew what to choose-dress up a

energetic personality. It was ugly and made you lose confidence. I thought there might be a way of
    bridging that gap.”
Ailbhe’s project was extremely well received at her school’s design show. Izzy loved the new

business to take off. The next step for the sisters was partnering with big companies which were
interested in representing people with disabilities. They turned to Disney. After all, this cooperation
would involve one of their favorite activities-watching Disney movies! Besides, Disney was willing
to donate 10% of profits to a charity that helps disabled children. In addition, the company promised

    C
Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your
creativity or simply give your brain a rest.
Nowadays, in the age of round-the-clock entertainment, it’s (technically) trickier to be bored. If
the show you’re watching has lost its spark, you can easily amuse yourself on social media without
even leaving the sofa. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. Feeling disengaged from the task in
hand, or a lack of stimulation, does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of
    Central Lancashire.
Being bored motivates you to search out something less boring to do. For example, if you decide
there’s nothing worth watching on T V, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This,
according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past three years saw a surge (激增)
in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for
    the first time since childhood.
But what about those times when you have no choice but to stick with the boring situation,
waiting for a bus, for instance? The good news is that the boredom you’re feeling now could spark
your creativity later, says a study published in the Academy of Management Discoveries journal.
People who’d taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative
ideas than another group who’d been given something more interesting to do first.
Ultimately, don’t take it for granted that there’ll always be something close at hand to entertain
us. With boredom, we will not run the risk of becoming boring ourselves.
    28. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
    A. Wondering mind can be healthy.
    B. Social media can surely entertain us.
    C. Being bored may be something good.
    D. Being involved in the task is beneficial.
    29. Why was the surge in creativity seen in recent years?
    A. People were stimulated by boredom.
    B. People were better equipped at home.
    C. People had more hobbies to choose from.
    D. People were more concerned about mental being.
    高二月考英语试题ꢀ第6页共12页

    30. What is the purpose of the bean-sorting task in the study?
    A. To create a boring situation. B. To reduce people’s boredom.
    C. To make a funny performance. D. To show an entertainment at hand.
    31. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. What is the point of creativity?
    B. Are we more easily bored nowadays?
    C. How can we deal with daily boredom?
    D. Does boredom make us more creative?
    D
Aeronautics (航空学) specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying
the dragonfly’s flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone (无人机).
Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonfly’s shape and
movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.
Chahl’s team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different
dragonfly species from museum collections. Their wings are long, light and hard. Plus, their long
bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver
awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.
Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques
they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Dragonflies are found to be able to perform
upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down
mid-air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a
passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their
engines turned off. Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can
    right themselves.
Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet’s air vehicle
was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before
production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the
    1970 s was deserted.
Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear-
powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan in 2034.
    高二月考英语试题ꢀ第7页共12页

NASA’s project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still
convinced they can crack the code of nature’s most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned
    flight along the way.
    32. Why did aeronautics specialists spend months studying the dragonfly’s flight?
    A. To build 3D models from digital images.
    B. To make winged drones modelled after it.
    C. To clarify the flexibility and efficiency of drones.
    D. To display the shape and movement of the dragonfly.
    33. The special skill of dragonflies is their ability to_________.
    A. glide to safety B. avoid tricky situations
    C. perform observation tasks D. adjust themselves to stay stable
    34. What is the author’s attitude towards winged drones?
    A. Skeptical. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Conservative.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Winged Drones: Still a Long Way to Go
    B. Javaan Chahl: An Innovative Leader of Aeronautics
    C. A Dragonfly’s Flying Technique: Perfect for Drones
    D. The Code of Nature: A Solution to NASA’s Space Exploration

would try my hardest, she would always have to help me with the words. Mrs. Agnew suggested to
my mother that I be tested for dyslexia (发育性阅读障碍) and seek a cure.
At first I didn’t understand why I was being tested. To be honest, I was in fear of facing failure
then. Nervous and confused, I sat waiting in the hospital room, unsure of what Dr. Grady, the doctor
who diagnosed developmental dyslexia, was telling my parents about the test results.
However, the final results showed that I did have developmental dyslexia. Knowing it, I froze. I
had no idea what to do but stand still. My mother looked at me and said quietly, “Honey, don’t worry,
and I’ll be with you all time. Are you going to let the obstacle get in your way? Say NO!”. Eventually,
I became determined to struggle against my disability. I started to take speech treatments from
doctors and some medical volunteers regularly. Dr. Grady told us to go to the hospital twice a week
for treatment and my reading ability will get normal after three years’ training.
Gradually, I even began to love reading, which I had once hated it so much. Several medical
volunteers listened to me patiently and taught me patiently. I was deeply moved. Whenever I saw
volunteers in white candy-striped medical uniforms passing by me, I had a strong desire to give back
by being a volunteer to help those like me.

    作文1
    Dear teachers and fellow students,
I’m honored to share my opinion on how science and technology changes our life.
With the fast development of science and technology, our life has become easier and smarter. For example, I always wear my smart sports watch, which can keep track of my health condition and help me get into good shape. Also, whenever I get home, the smart lock in my house can recognize my face and open the door for me automatically, saving time and labor.

    作文2
The time for retesting finally arrived. I had overcome my learning disability. Dr. Grady confirmed this. “I’m proud of you, honey!” My mother smiled, hugging me tightly. Dr. Grady said that my dyslexia was at a minimum. My reading ability was as normal as other teens. I was overjoyed. But even though I had conquered one of the biggest challenges in my life, I still felt like something was missing. I decided to do something for others.
One day a little girl in a wheelchair asked me to read a book to her. I read the book very slowly so that she could understand the story and the words. When it was time for me to leave, the girl thanked me for reading to her. I walked out of her room with a huge smile on my face. Without their help and encouragement, I would have hesitated in reading a book to this little girl, but now I was confident. I had overcome my disability and was helping others to overcome theirs. I am determined to help others face and conquer the challenges that I have overcome.
