When Graysn Barrn learned f such a tragedy in a friend's neighbrhd, the 18-year-ld immediately jumped int prblem-slving mde. Graysn calls his flating system"The Buy". The idea is turning it n when n ne is using the pl. A large splash caused by a persn falling int water will trigger its built-in sensrs. Then they send ut a series f alerts- a flashing light, an alarm that sunds like a lud drbell and a text t the wner's mbile phne. "Yu culd be n the ther side f the wrld and knw if smebdy has just jumped int yur pl," says Graysn. Graysn shwcased his prject in Atlanta at the 2022 Regenern Internatinal Science and Engineering Fair(ISEF).
Graysn's device is nt the first pl alarm, but the teen says thers all have drawbacks. Sme are very cstly. Other flating alarms can becme stuck in crners f a pl r lse balance. He wanted a lw-cst ptin that was reliable. Graysn 3D printed the main part f his device and then attached sensr, which can detect the system’s directin and mvements. He then equipped the device with a light, a speaker and a wireless netwrk that can send texts. A battery, which is hked up t slar panels, keeps the system charged fr mnths. While hard t design, the new system "is s easy t use", says Graysn. "All I d is turn it n and thrw it int a pl." After that, he says, it just " des its thing".
