Monarch butterflies migrate(迁徙) by the millions each year, making the trip from northern areas of the Continent to California and Mexico and back.
As monarch butterflies are a threatened species with their population numbers in decline, Patrick Guerra, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, and his colleagues wanted to see what types of environmental stress might be linked to their decline.
“We use monarch butterflies as a model system to understand long-distance animal migration. Our goal was to understand how environmental stress, such as different types of stress caused by urbanization, impacts animal migratory phenomena,” Guerra says.
For their study, researchers conducted lab studies where they reproduced the effects of artificial light pollution with butterflies using a flight simulator (模拟器).
Butterflies stayed quiet and unmoving when they were first placed in the flight simulator in the dark. But as soon as scientists turned on the light, they started flying. The light made them believe that night was day and this can cause them to fly longer at night or start flying too early.
The study has found that the internal circadian clock of butterflies functions normally when they are exposed to natural day: night lighting cycles, but artificial light, such as a streetlight, at night can throw off a monarch butterfly’s internal compass. It can affect their circadian rhythms(昼夜节奏), which can make the monarch butterflies get lost when they try to fly the next day. This shows without darkness, the circadian clock of butterflies cannot function properly.
“When exposed to artificial light, the light can perturb the normal functioning of the animal’s circadian clock,” Guerra says. “Light pollution, particularly nighttime light pollution, causes animals to experience light at a time when they are not supposed to, e.g., at night when they are normally in the dark, and are at rest. Exposure to such light can prevent the behavior and microbiological of animals which they rely on or that are regulated by the circadian clock.”
Actually, streetlights and other artificial night lights can do more than mess up the insects’ wake/sleep cycle and migration.
24、Why did the researchers carry out the study?
    A. To look for the reason for butterflies’ migration.
    B. To test what action should be taken to protect butterflies.
    C. To know about the circadian rhythms of migratory animals.
    D. To find out how the environmental stress affects animal migration.
25、What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment?
    A. Natural light contributes much to pollution.
    B. Migratory animals often lose their way.
    C. Light pollution is increasingly serious.
    D. Darkness is vital to migratory animals.
26、What does the underlined word “perturb” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
    A. Stop. B. Disturb. C. Reflect. D. Enhance.
27、What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
    A. Other impacts of night light. B. Butterflies’ circadian cycle.
    C. The importance of natural light. D. The way to reduce air pollution.
It’s likely that you don’t think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new TV. But new Samsung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed, whether it’s a broadcast or something streaming from the Internet. And some smart TVs can even track what DVD you’re watching.
Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some products to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups like the ones you see on your computer.
You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to sign away your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.
When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn’t make any comment. An LG representative said that the company isn’t using any data to send personalized ads and has no plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.
You might think, “Well, why don’t I just turn those marketing features off?” It’s not always so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fight your way through menu settings. On an LG set, go to “settings”, then “options”, then “Live plus”, click “off”, and then close. With Vizio, it’s a voyage through three menus to turn off the box “Smart Interactivity”. With Samsung, it’s a similar trip to find the box “SyncPlus and Marketing” to disable it.
Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of extra scenes which are related to the shows you’re watching. But maybe that's a small price to pay for knowing that what you’re watching remains private.
28、What might the marketers use your viewing habits to do?
    A. To improve the quality of smart TVs.
    B. To collect some suggestions about shows.
    C. To recommend shows or advertise products.
    D. To build a strong relationship between produces and customers.
29、How does Consumer Reports find the comment made by an LG representative?
    A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Reasonable. D. Approving.
30、What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
    A. How we learn to use TVs’ settings.
    B. How we can become wise customers.
    C. How we send personal information to others.
    D. How we stop our viewing from being tracked.
31、Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
    A. It’s worthwhile to turn marketing features off.
    B. People should keep their watching habits a secret.
    C. TVs’ marketing features should be further developed.
    D. TV producers should apologize to customers for their misbehavior.
The words “caring” and “empathetic” (共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian enterpriser who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.
Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to homelife, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive AI to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate(操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.
In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. “It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system, Yearsley says.
Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017, when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored. Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations report estimates that women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do, or close to 30 hours per week in the U.S. alone.
Meanwhile, Yearsley, who has a special-needs child and a relative with disability says it makes sense to focus on the disability field because of the extra in-home needs of users and their caregivers. “We have a lot more work load,” she says. “Are we giving time back to caregivers? I am not going to rest until I give you back 10 hours a week.”
While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money. Akin has received some early seed from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.
32、What might the Akin’s AI system suggest?
    A. Consuming more drinks to enjoy yourself.
    B. Staying up late working to make more money
    C. Spending more time staying with your family
    D. Purchasing products similar to what you bought.
33、Which is a contributor to Yearsley’s AI system?
    A. Lots of financial support from investors
    B. The uselessness of current home devices.
    C. Akins’ becoming a finalist for a program.
    D. Heavy burden of housewives and caregivers.
34、What can be used to describe the Akin’s AI system?
    A. Successful and promising B. Stable and practical.
    C. Thoughtful and innovative. D. Mature and friendly.
35、What’s the purpose of the text?
    A. To call on people to help the disabled.
    B. To raise money for a tech giant.
    C. To compare two companies’ AI systems.
    D. To introduce a futuristic AI system.

    A Change of Heart
It was a cold December and things were tough for my family. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster as dad passed away five years earlier. We relied on social assistance.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would place a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling (铲) snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a half-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.

解析:M: I think there’s a mistake in our bill. We didn’t have dinner here last night.
W: I’m sorry, sir. Here’s the bill from the hotel restaurant. It’s got your signature on it.
M: But that’s not my signature. I’d like to speak to your manager.
    3、答案:C
解析:M: I’ve gained so much muscle recently that my clothes have become too tight.
W: You used to wear small-sized shirts. Should I buy you medium size now?
M: I haven’t worn small-sized shirts in a long time. Even medium size is too tight.
    4、答案:B

解析:M: Excuse me, Miss. I’ve got an issue with the shoes that my wife bought for me here.

M: I usually don’t wear running shoes, so I don’t know if the sizes are a bit different. These shoes are size 41, but they are still so small.
W: What size shoes do you normally wear? Running shoes shouldn’t be much smaller than other types of shoes.
M: I don’t usually wear size 41 shoes. Normally I wear a size smaller. Anyways, I must return these shoes.
W: Would you like another pair of running shoes, or maybe hiking shoes?
M: All of those activities hurt my knees sometimes. Could I buy some tennis shoes instead?

M: Well, it won’t be hot like our normal vacations to the Bahamas or Cabo San Lucas. Since it’s going to be cold in the Swiss Alps, you will have many clothes on. No one will know if you wear the same thing twice.
W: I understand that. I’m just making sure I bring the warmest clothes so I won’t be cold. You should do the same thing. Warm clothes are always larger than you think and they may not fit in your bag.
M: What should I do then?
W: You should pack now to see if you have enough room.
M: If I don’t have enough room for everything, I will just wear all my jackets onto the plane.

M: Well, for several years, I managed a department for the Brownstone Company in Detroit, Michigan. Now I work part time because I also go to school at night. I’m getting a business degree.
W: Oh, how interesting. Tell me, why do you want to leave your present job?
    M: I’d like a full-time position with more responsibility.

    解析:
    18、答案: A
解析:We stand at a great moment in our history. We have for a long time known of the dangers of global warming, but sadly little action has been taken to respond to it. However, we have listened to our children campaigning all across the world, and we have chosen to listen to them, and make hard choices. We have set a date of 2025 for petrol-based cars to stop production. That gives producers four years to complete the change from polluting vehicles to electric cars which are clean. In addition, our governments will bring in a vehicle exchange system. It will allow drivers to trade in their car for an electric model at no additional cost. We see this as an urgent action that needs to be taken. We cannot put profits ahead of the health of our planet. For too long, the industries that pollute the most have dragged their heels. Well no more! In addition, we will also be banning all plastic bottles by 2030. Unless producers can find a way to make plastic break down, we would suggest a return to glass bottles. They can easily be reused and recycled with no harm to the environment. Plastic has invaded our food supply, and we need to remove it urgently before it destroys our planet’s ecosystem.

Last Sunday, our school organised a friendly football match between students and teachers, in an effort to enrich students’ school life.
Bathed in sunshine, players from Grade 3 competed against their teachers in the field, with all the rest students watching excitedly in the bleachers. Both teams were playing at their best in high spirits. Although the teachers dominated the game at first, the students did not give up and tried to intercept every pass from their opponents. The match was filled with great dynamics and interesting plays, ending in a draw of 2:2.
The exciting game not only helped relieve the students’ intense pressure caused by heavy workload, but also strengthened their relationship with the teachers.
    54、答案:
    Para. 1:
As I continued walking, I began to feel a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots, while Mum was probably home in tears, thinking of ways to explain why there were no presents. How was I supposed to be happy if everyone else in the family was not? Thinking of this, the idea of buying the beautiful boots I had wanted for so long didn’t seem as fascinating as before. As I arrived at the bus stop, the driver opened the door, waiting for me to get on. I stood there for what seemed like a century, until eventually the driver asked, “Son, are you getting on this bus or not?” I finally burst out without hesitation, “No thanks, sir. I’ve changed my mind.”
    Para. 2:
The bus drove off without me, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I knew what I had to do next. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every coin of my hard-earned money. Once I arrived home with all those purchases, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there, too stunned to speak. Holding back the tears, I exclaimed, “Merry Christmas, Mother! There really is a Santa Claus!” To see my mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!
