In recent years, “patient escorts” has emerged as a new industry, and those who have taken on this career are known as “people who sell time”. Zhang Tian, a 26-year-old girl, is one of them.
“Get up at 6 a. m., arrive at the hospital one hour earlier to help patients check in, and accompany patients during consultations ... Being patient and energetic are the basic requirements for a hospital escort,” Zhang Tian said. “In fact, a hospital escort cares for not only patients’ physical health, but also their mental well-being.”
Zhang Tian used to work in the Internet industry but after hitting a wall in her career, she now has switched to being a professional hospital escort. Aware of her shortcomings, she accompanies patients in the daytime; while in the evening, she watches videos about medical science and reads all kinds of books on psychology and medical services.
The memory of her first task is still alive and fresh in her mind. “I received a phone call on September 9 from a man whose father was seriously ill and might need surgery. He wanted me to accompany his father through his consultation and treatment.” Zhang Tian said. Early the next morning, Zhang Tian came to the hospital in advance to help the elderly man queue up to check in, “Later, the family expressed their gratitude to me over and over again, which warmed my heart and gave me a sense of achievement,” Zhang added. As of now, Zhang Tian has already provided 15 accompanying services, mostly to those aged between 60 and 70, as well as those in their 20s.
Although in the eyes of others, this is not a decent job, Zhang Tian regards this job as her startup. “I actually think there will be a greater demand for such accompanying services in the future. I also want to expand my services in the future, such as cooking food for the elderly, chatting with the elderly, and traveling with the elderly,” She says.

A.It is rough. B.It is successful. C.It is disappointing. D.It is adventurous.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Zhang Tian has a strong faith in her current job.
B.Hospital escort is now favored by many people.
C.The demand of hospital escort declines gradually.
D.Accompanying service is hard to develop further.

Nearly half of the buildings in Philadelphia are darkening their lights this spring after thousands of birds died in the city’s largest mass collision(碰撞)in recent history.
The voluntary measure has been coordinated by “Bird Safe Philly” and continues until May 30 with the purpose of sparing the lives of some of the 100 million birds passing over the city on their annual migrations(迁徙).
To some, it might seem beneficial to leave the lights on to help birds steer clear of buildings, but Robert Peck, a senior fellow at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, explains most migrating birds navigate by the light of the sun, the moon and the stars.
Fog and rain, which are quite common in spring and autumn, force birds to fly at lower sky. When they see the bright city lights, they are often disoriented and confused. “Suddenly they have all these lights coming at them from different directions. It’s overwhelming,” Peck said. “They get turned around and they will fly into buildings and walls.”
The Philadelphia buildings participating in these efforts have agreed to switch unnecessary lights off from 12:01 a. m. to 6 a. m., especially on higher floors. One catalyst(催化剂)for this year’s effort was a mass collision event on October 2 of last year when thousands of birds died after striking buildings in the city. Their dead bodies “littering the sidewalks in the downtown of Philadelphia, where the first bird death from a collision was recorded in the 1890s and the Academy of Natural Sciences started collecting “window kills”.
The effort to lower the death of birds is also underway in 33 other US cities, but sadly it will hardly solve the death faced by air-borne birds. Up to one billion birds die each year when they strike human structures, according to a news release from “Lights Out Philly”. “It’s a tough trip for the birds either way so the last thing they need to do is encounter brightly lit buildings,” notes Peck.
8.What’s the purpose of switching off the lights at night in Philadelphia?
A.For saving energy. B.For the safety of birds’ flights.
C.For initiating low carbon lifestyle. D.For bringing down the light pollution.
9.Why do some people keep their lights on for the migrating birds purposely at night?
A.Because they are on the night shift.
B.Because they are fearful of darkness.
C.Because they want to beautify the city.
D.Because they are unfamiliar with birds’ habit.
10.What’s Peck’s attitude towards birds’ future migrations?
    A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent.
    C.Confident. D.Pessimistic.
11.Where may this text come from?
A.A news report. B.A proposal for blackout.
C.A guide to keeping birds. D.A botanical introduction.

Modern life is full of things that can influence your ability to be sensitive and responsive to your child. These include extra work, lack of sleep, and things like mobile devices. Some experts are concerned about the effects that these things trigger off on emotional bonding and children’s language development, social interaction, and safety.
If parents are inconsistently available, kids can get distressed(苦恼的)and feel hurt, rejected, or ignored. They may have more emotional outbursts and feel alone. They may even stop trying to compete for their parent’s attention and start to lose emotional connections to their parents.
“There are times when kids really do need your attention and want your recognition. Parents need to communicate that their kids are valuable and important, and children need to know that parents care what they’re doing,” explains Crnic, a psychologist. “Kids start to regulate their own emotions and behavior around age three. Up until then, they depend more on you to help them regulate their emotions, whether to calm them or help get them excited,” he adds.
Dr. Carol Metzler, who studies parenting at the Oregon Research Institute, explains, “They’re watching you to see how you do it and listening to how you talk to them about it. Parents need to be good self-regulators. You’re not only trying to regulate your own emotions in the moment, but helping your child learn to manage their emotions and behavior. It can be tough to respond to your kids with sensitivity during tantrums(精神痛苦), arguments, or other challenging times. If parents respond by being bad-tempered or aggressive(攻击性的)themselves, children can copy that behavior, and a negative cycle then continues to upgrade.”
As kids become better at managing their feelings and behavior, it’s important to help them develop coping skills, like active problem solving. Such skills can help them feel confident in handling what comes their way.
12.Which of the following can replace the underlined words “trigger off”?
    A.Set off. B.Burst into.
    C.Consist of. D.Dive for.
13.Why does Metzler think it tough to respond to kids sensitively in Paragraph 4?
A.Because kids are unable to make out their parents’ arguments.
B.Because parents are too sensitive to train kids to be aggressive.
C.Because kids can not copy their parents’ behavior on these occasions.
D.Because parents have to control their feelings and teach it to their kids.
    14.What’s the text mainly about?
A.Parents should not be bad-tempered in front of their kids.
B.Parents should consistently develop their problem solving skills.
C.Parents should engage with kids and respond to them positively.
D.Parents should continuously upgrade their language and emotions.
15.What will the writer probably talk about next?
A.The way to train kids to be confident.
B.The way to train kids’ abilities to deal with matters.
C.The way to train kids to self-regulate their emotions.
D.The way to train kids’ abilities to be sensitive and responsibe.

    六、读后续写
    47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Have you ever noticed how certain smells can call up particular emotions or memories? A whiff of perfume(一阵香水味)or after-shave recalls a favorite person; the delicious smell of warm bread tickles the taste buds(味蕾).
Think about newly cut grass or how the air smells after a thunderstorm. Burning leaves on fresh and cold fall days always remind me of the football at the weekend. Perhaps the smells that surround Christmas carry the most memories. The fresh green smell of pine trees; the fragrances of a variety of food, especially the ones given off by cookies being baked in an oven and hot chocolate. Moreover, the scent of wood smoke around the burning fire can also bring warmth and the comfortable feeling to our mind. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.
But the smell I associate best with Christmas and winter is a wet dog. Our dog was mostly an outdoor dog and was often wet completely in the rain. We tried to dry him off as soon as he came in, grabbing the old, dirty towel by the door. He usually shook himself before we could catch him. The walls of the back entry were always spotted with brown mud all winter. We brushed him regularly in spring and summer when winter fur fell out by handfuls, but baths were rare. So, of course, his smell built up over time. Try as we might, we never could completely get rid of that smell. It lay hidden deep in his fur and skin.
The distinctive smell of the wet dog was a reminder of the Christmas vacation when I was twelve, and the cousins from Ohio were visiting. We had gotten shiny, slippery flying saucers as gifts and were also blessed with fresh snow. The four of us spent as much time as possible sliding down the short hill to the pond. Naturally, we tested the ice on the pond before sliding the first day, and we knew we could slide across it and lengthen our ride.
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右:
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    46.Dear Mr . Green,
I’m writing to apologize for being unable to submit the homework given by you last week, which is due this Friday.

Consequently, it would be difficult for me to finish the assignment on time. I wonder if you can allow me to postpone the submission time until next Friday.
I would appreciate it very much if you could take my request into consideration. Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua

47.On the third day, we were so eager to play that we did not check it. A few degrees of warmth added a small layer of water to our slide, increasing our speed and excitement. My brother Peter
slid happily and rapidly down the hill and on to the pond. Seconds later, he was struggling in the
icy water. Peter was only eight and not a good swimmer, especially wrapped in a heavy winter
coat and boots. It happened all of a sudden and made us all in panic and scream.
I stepped down the bank carefully to reach him, but the dog was faster. He jumped into the
water, grabbed Peter by his ailing hand, and pulled him to shore. The cousins and I were able to
finish pulling Peter out of the frigid water. You can guess the rest of the story. We managed to
wrap Peter in our coats and get him back up the hill to the house in record time. Sipping cocoa by
the heater, we patted and hugged that wet dog. The dog took all day to dry out. His wet dog smell
lingered longer and returned often, reminding us of his heroics and our own Christmas miracle.
    【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者十二岁时的圣诞节假期时和表亲们在池塘上滑冰,八岁的彼得不小心掉入池塘中。作者的狗跳进水中,帮助作者一行人救出彼得的故事。
