Most students of the University of Rochester(UR) will spend at least one evening at Tin Roof, the only bar located a block away from campus before they graduate. Kaleb Chitaphong, who spent numerous nights there as an undergraduate, bought the place.
Chitaphong didn't intend to own a bar after graduation, instead hoping to follow his Political Science education through to a PhD and probably find a career in academia. But when his frequented place was facing closure last year during the height of the pandemic(疫情), Chitaphong decided he couldn't let that happen.“I grew up in this area, so when finding out the business was closing, I contacted the owner. Initially, I had no plans to buy it. But when we got talking more, things worked out and I was able to gain ownership,” he said.
Chitaphong had experience in the restaurant industry from his family. But even with background knowledge, he still had a quick preparation in owning a bar the hard way—learning the laws, earning his alcohol license and understanding requirements—all during the pandemic. Chitaphong reopened the restaurant this past February, starting small.
Although Tin Roof is loved by students, Chitaphong hopes it can attract local residents as well, “It's important for me to have a place where everybody can come and have a good time,” he said. While Chitaphong wants to have a bar that isn't exclusive to just UR students, he also wants to remain close to campus life. “I want it to be a UR bar, in whatever way that means,” he expressed. “I've talked to sports teams of UR to get some jerseys(球衣) hung up.”
As pandemic limitation continues to ease up, Chitaphong has plans to host more events. In addition to Disco Tuesdays, he recently added Karaoke Fridays. He's also planning cooperation with UR's Stand-Up Comedy to try out Stand-Up Wednesdays.
Despite his big plans, Tin Roof isn't Chitaphong's end game. He may open up another business. But right now he's focusing on this space to make it the best time for as many people as possible,
24. What did Chitaphong do first when the bar was closing?
A. He made many ads for it. B. He worked as a cook there.
C. He communicated with the owner. D. He went there a lot.
25. How did Chitaphong succeed in starting the bar?
A. He made many preparations. B. He learned from some famous bars.
C. He gained help from his friends. D. He only used his background knowledge.
26. Why did Chitaphong contact the sports teams of UR?
A. To attract more players. B. To promote various sports.
C. To win support for the teams. D. To let his bar have a UR atmosphere.
27. Which can best describe Chitaphong?
A. Knowledgeable and curious. B. Hardworking and devoted.
C. Selfish and ambitious. D. Honest and brave.

The threat of climate change and warming oceans is growing bigger for the world's coral reefs, which are struggling to adapt to increasingly bad waters. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have showed a new way we may be able to limit the damage—taking coral species that have already survived severe heat stress and transplanting them to degraded reefs to sow the seeds(播种).
We are seeing a lot of focus from environmental scientists on how corals can be made more resistant to heat stress. Some creative solutions include planting them with helpful bacteria, developing tougher species through a new technique and feeding them medicine to increase their chances of survival.
All of these are part of the effort to prevent the changes brought upon corals by abnormal sea temperatures, which causes algae(藻类) living in them to become stressed and break free. This leaves the coral without a key source of food and causes them to turn white (coral bleaching), and in a lot of cases, die off, as seen in the bleaching events to trouble Australia's Great Barrier Reef in recent years.
An eco-friendly solution being explored by the University of Pennsylvania team focuses on corals that have already proved themselves in the face of severe bleaching events. The scientists searched for Hawaii's coral reefs, which survived severe bleaching in 2015, with. The intention of studying how they respond to being placed in an entirely different environment. “The cool thing was that we didn't see any differences in their bleaching response after this transplant, and they were still in good condition,” says Katie Barott, who led the research team.
While the findings promise well, these techniques to address the broader problem isn't a practical solution. “Techniques like this can buy us a little time, but there isn't a substitute for limiting carbon emissions,” says Barott. “We need global action on climate change because even bleaching-resistant corals aren't going to survive forever if ocean warming keeps increasing as fast as it is today.”
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The need to plant corals. B. The work to develop new corals.
C. The need to save weak corals. D. The work to help corals to survive heat stress
29. What can we know about corals with heat stress?
A. They may die of hunger. B. They are harmful to fishes.
C. They change color to green. D. They hide themselves deep in the sea.
30. How did :the transplanted corals grow in the new environments?
A. Slowly. B. Normally. C. Rapidly. D. Hard.
31. In which section of a magazine can we probably read the text?
A. Culture. B. Health. C. Environment. D. Tourism.

Contrary to “popular opinion”, the scientific pursuit for knowledge is not a predictable process. To make new discoveries, researchers need the freedom to be creative, fail, and learn by chance. This aspect is similar to art, This is why Wageningen scientists look to artists for inspiration and exchange ideas about how to increase creative freedom.
“Science and art are two different ways to make something understandable. They both provide a perspective on reality," says Biochemistry Professor Dolf Weijers. “From the outside, the research process looks very formal and the artistic process looks somewhat messy. But the scientific process can also unfold in an unpredictable way.”
“Scientists can learn a lot from artists,” says Weijers. “Association and creativity are central to art, Those aspects require more attention in science as the creative process is the key of science.”
“As a scientist, you use different methods, but it is equally about how you visualize your understandings of reality and the connections between them. This is sometimes just as visual as art,” says Weijers. One example is a recent special project in which Weijers and his colleague Joris Sprakel, professor of Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter, measured the forces that act on plant cells. A molecular(分子的) sensor was used to visualize the different forces. They showed the results in colorful images, each representing a different force.
What science and art also have in common is that they are topics of discussion in society. There are people who say that they do not value art and people who mistrust science. Weijers says, “It often creates the wrong impression because only the results of scientific studies are presented, and people do not have any insight into the process leading to discovery. As a scientist, you are doubted if you say something that is different a few years later. Then you are viewed as unreliable. But what is often poorly understood is that there are no final results in science. What we scientists can achieve in the coming period is to provide more chances for people to focus on the process. Personally, I think that the connection with art can help to lead the focus on the process than the result.”
32. What does Dolf Weijers think of science process?
A. It is always serious. B. It can't be accidental.
C. It doesn't allow failures. D. It can be unexpected.
33. What does the underlined sentence “This is sometimes just as visual as art” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Visualizing is a must for science.
B. Science can be visualized like art.
C. Science should be understood by visualizing.
D. Visualizing is as easy in science as in art.
34. Why do common people mistrust science in Dolf Weijers' opinion?
A. Scientists usually draw unreliable conclusions.
B. Scientists don't use visualizing to show the results.
C. The scientific process is unknown to them.
D. The scientific results are complex for the public.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Differences Between Science and Art
B. Similarities Between Science and Art
C. Scientists and Artists Contribute to the World
D. Science and Art Are Tools to Understand the World

The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.
Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”
The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.
After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.
After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery. 参考答案提示及评分细则
听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
M: I'd like to book a single room with a view of the river, please.
W: OK, sir. It's 150 pounds a night. For how many nights would that be?
M: Three nights.
(Text 2)
M: It's almost one o'clock. I'm going out to get a sandwich. I can get one for you, too, if you like.
W: That's very kind of you. Could you get me a cup of coffee, too? I have to finish this report.
(Text 3)
M: Diane, do you think you'll get the report finished by five o clock?
W: By five? No way. There's too much to do.
M: Would you mind staying late to finish it? Our boss will need it tomorrow morning.
(Text 4)
M: Hello, I would like to sign up for some fitness classes.
W: Great! What would you like to do? We have a lot of classes, yoga, boxing, and...
(Text 5)
M: I don't see the value of these paintings. They look like the kind of pictures my four-year-old daughter paints.
W: I agree. I would never put them in my house.
(Text 6)
W: Hey, Sean. I hear you moved home last week. Congratulations!
M: Thanks. It's a smaller place than I was in, though. And it's more expensive.
W: But don't you find it's more convenient to be in the city?
M: Yes, that's why I moved. I love the countryside, but it used to take 40 minutes to get here on the train. Now I walk to work!
(Text 7)
W: Hold on a minute, Dad. Didn't we walk by those two trees about an hour ago?
M: Hm. Yes, I'm afraid we did.
W: Oh, no! We've gone so far into the forest.
M: Stay calm, Gina. I know how to get out. When I was young, your grandpa taught me that if I was ever lost in the forest, I should just walk downhill. As long as you re going downhill, sooner or later you'll find a village or town where you can ask people for help.
W: That makes sense. But which way is down? It's hard to tell when there are trees everywhere.
M: Well, there's a river over there. Have you ever seen water flows uphill?
(Text 8)
M: How quickly time passes! It seems like only yesterday that my son Jason was born, and now he's 20 and about to leave us. He's got a job in Spain, so he's moving there.
W: My son Richard's the same. He's 21, and he looks very much like his dad now. He also has the same character as his dad.
M: Did he move out?
W: Yes, Richard's already left home. We only see him several times a year.
M: It's sad when your dearest ones move away. Our daughter lives in the US, and we hardly ever see her. It's hard not being able to visit your own children often.
W: Yes. But then, you know, our family always prefer being independent. We never live in each other's pockets. I think it's a good quality.
(Text 9)
M: Did you see that quiz show on Channel 5 last night?
W: No. Was it any good?
M: It was great. Charles Hamilton always makes me laugh. He's good at presenting this show anyway.
W: Sounds good. I'll see what this quiz show's like. When is it on?
M: It's on at 8:00 pm every Friday. I'm sure you will like it.
W: So are all the questions really easy and just about pop music and movies?
M: No, they re general knowledge questions. Actually, they start off a bit easy but they get harder and harder as the show goes on. You have to really think about them. The last few ones are really challenging.
W: Usually I'm not bad at general knowledge questions—especially ones about history or literature. I shouldn't have much of a problem.
M: Great. I'm good at maths and science. We should have a quiz at school some time. Maybe I can ask Mr. Kingsley, my geography teacher, to organize it. I'm sure he could get quite a few other people to take part, too.
W: That sounds like fun.
(Text 10)
M: OK, everyone. It's just before nine, so we should be at our first stop very shortly- -Windsor Castle. A few reminders: Entry into the castle is included in your tour ticket, so stick with me when we get off the coach. I'll get you straight in. You'll have almost two hours to look around. Remember, we'll meet back at 10:50 at the same place we drop you off at just outside the visitor center. At 11 o'clock, we'll watch the Changing the Guard Ceremony. Then at 11:30 we 're off to our next destination, Big Ben, where we'll stop for an hour. That is enough time to walk around the place and get some good photos. Then this afternoon after lunch we'll go to the lovely city of Bath. Today's going to be a full day. Tomorrow morning, we will visit Stonehenge. Right. In just a few minutes we'll be pulling up at the entrance, so make sure you have all your valuables with you. And please don't be late getting back. If you have any problems, just call me.

Dear Mr. Brown,
I'm excited to hear that you are recruiting volunteers for “Chinese Martial Art Into Campus”. I'm writing to apply for this position. The position can provide me with a good chance to spread lively and elegant Chinese martial arts.
I think I'm equal to the job. To begin with, with a great command of English, I can communicate with foreign friends fluently. Besides, I have a wide knowledge of Chinese martial arts. What's more, I have gained outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills from previous voluntary work.
I am looking forward to your reply. I would be grateful if I could get admitted.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
