The miniseries(迷你剧), Animals with Cameras, produced by the BBC, was first aired in the UK last month. To explore animal stories “told” by the animals themselves, this nature documentary's filmmakers worked with scientists to develop cameras that wild animals could wear.
“Never before have we seen such high-quality footage(连续镜头) directly from the animal's point of view,” BBC Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman told PBS.“This miniseries greatly expands our comprehension of animal behavior and this camera technology opens up new possibilities for discovering so much more.”
Indeed, the groundbreaking technology provides a new perspective of the animal kingdom. New cameras with enough battery life to shoot for hours at a time were designed to be comfortable enough for animals to wear. The technical challenges didn’t stop there. Some animals were very curious about the equipment, with some even fighting each other for the chance to wear a camera. In the case of chimpanzees, “we had to create dummy(仿造的) cameras, so that every chimpanzee could get one” the miniseries' wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan told Live Science.
For animals that were comfortable enough to be with human beings, the cameras could be fitted and removed by hand. But for others, the cameras came off automatically using a timed release and were collected afterward. This meant that the cameras can't be easily broken or tom.
This nature documentary arose much attention. “Footage that captures these rare and exciting glimpses of animals' hidden habits is important to scientists, but documentaries like Animals with Cameras also resonate with(引起共鸣)audiences, connecting them with the beauty—and peril(危险)—of wildlife in their natural environments,” Live Science noted.
24. What can we learn about Animals with Cameras according to the passage?
A. It is filmed by the wildlife experts.
B. It has helped scientists discover new species.
C. It shows animal stories from their perspective.
D. It is the first documentary using high quality footage.
25. Which word can best describe the new cameras used on animals?
A. Uncomfortable. B. Tough. C. Disposable. D. Battery-free.
26. Why is the case of chimpanzees mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To reflect what weakness the camera technology has.
B. To present how filmmakers put cameras on chimpanzees.
C. To explain why chimpanzees were attracted by the device.
D. To show how filmmakers handle the challenges in shooting.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. See Life as an Animal B. Wildlife Enjoys Filming
C. Wildlife Tells New Stories D. Protect Animals by Cameras

Although we all experience failure in our lives, we don't all react to it in the same way. An interesting research has emphasized the idea that there are some people who see challenges and disappointments as opportunities to re-focus their thinking. These are people with a growth mindset. Then, there are other people who see failure as a complete failure. They believe that they never had the talent anyway, and they probably never will. These are people with a fixed mindset.
Psychologist Dweck has studied these mindsets and provided evidence that most people intentionally place themselves in one of those two groups. The group to which you assign yourself frequently determine show you react to challenges. If you experience failure and give up, you have conveniently assigned yourself to the fixed group. If you experience failure and regard it as a stepping stone, then you have placed yourself into the growth group.
According to the research, people in the growth group tend to generate more creative ideas than those in the fixed group. To illustrate, consider Thomas Edison. In the 19th century, Edison attempted to improve the light bulb and experimented with numerous materials. Over a thousand trials, he managed to discover an element sustaining light. A reporter once asked him, “It seems as though you've tried many times and continue to fail each time. Why is that?” Edison answered, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
In studies of creative people, psychologists discovered that a distinguishing feature separating them from the non-creative is that they make lots of mistakes and continue to work through them. Most people consider success and failure as polar opposites. In reality, they are both parts of the same process.
28. What might people with a growth mindset agree with?
A. Challenges are welcomed. B. Mistakes can be avoided.
C. Success is mainly due to good luck. D. Only talent leads to success.
29. What does the underlined phrase “a stepping stone” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A road to nowhere. B. A challenge in the way.
C. An outcome to expect. D. A chance to advance.
30. Why is Thomas Edison mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To make a prediction. B. To present a fact.
C. To support a viewpoint. D. To clarify a principle.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. How people interpret failure often determines their creative output.
B. Learning from success plays an important part in improving creativity.
C. Growth mindset people see challenges differently from fixed mindset ones.
D. Which group people put themselves in decide show they react to challenges.
D
With renewable energy the big problem is storing the electricity for when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow. A solution, one group of scientists thinks, could have lain beneath our feet all along.
Michael Harbottle from Cardiff University are leading the project, which seeks to turn soil into a kind of battery by using the microbes within. For now the voltages(电压) Harbottle's team is working with are too small for the requirements of the electric system. But, there are still clear applications if the team can make it work.
The planned system involves running a current between buried electrodes(电极) .This stimulates certain bacteria in the soil. Just as sunlight provides the energy for plants to make sugar from carbon dioxide and water, so the electrical energy lets the bacteria convert carbon dioxide into a chemical called acetate.
This acetate becomes in effect a chemical store of energy, and, when the energy is needed, a different circuit(电路) is switched on, giving different bacteria the energy to breakdown the acetate. This process frees electrons, which flow through the circuit, providing electricity on demand. “The bugs will eat the food, pass the electrons, and it will power the lightbulb at the same time,” said Harbottle. “It's no real difference from what they're doing when they're consuming food and producing energy to grow. It's just we are making use of that energy to get a little bit for ourselves.”
For now, though, there are more fundamental questions. As with all energy storage systems, the viability(可行性) could depend on how much energy is lost in the process. Unlike in other energy storage systems, it also depends on whether anything eats these bacteria and what happens when it rains.
“It's not in a box. It's not contained. The things you reusing can be moving around; they can be spreading to all sorts of places. The challenge,” Harbottle admitted, “is that it's an uncontrolled environment.”
32. What's the project mainly about?
A. Exploring new energy. B. Finding new storage.
C. Removing carbon dioxide. D. Discovering new microbes.
33. What does the underlined word “convert” in paragraph 3mean?
A. Generate. B. Transfer. C. Turn. D. Exchange.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The usage of adding more circuits. B. The process of releasing electricity.
C. The food necessary for raising bugs. D. The equipment to store the electrons.
35. What problem might Harbottle try to solve next?
A. How to keep the bacteria stay put. B. How to reduce the effects of rains.
C. How to make the bacteria live longer. D. How to produce more electrical energy.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The most delightful and unusual thing I paid for in the last summer was a pair of ducklings. One day I spotted a friend's photo of two tiny golden ducklings in her living room. I message d her immediately. She was fostering(照料) the baby ducks for a farm. As the farm explains on its website, you can adopt the newborns and parent them until they grow into their “adulthood” when you could choose to keep them or take them back. For $165, the farm would bring us everything we needed to foster ducklings and also an activity for Leo. This program would provide us with what we'd been lacking: joy and fellowship. “Were getting ducklings!” I proudly announced.
About 10 days later, a man from the farm arrived at our home and handed over a shoebox housing a pair of baby ducks. Leo and I held them in our hands, each one a tiny, almost weightless parcel of silky gold. Leo immediately cast himself as their father, and the ducklings accepted the role happily, waddling(摇摆) at his feet and slipping on our hardwood floors. Leo kissed them on their beaks(喙)and they bit his lip slightly, which he concluded meant they loved him.
After a few weeks, the ducklings tripled in size, and the fairytale took a turn. Much as we loved them, it was time to make the choice. They were about to enter adulthood, and it was getting inconvenient to keep the many longer. It was only then that I realized I didn't know what would happen to them back at the farm. I called the farm, and I was told that actually our ducklings would likely serve as a“wonderful supper”.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I’m Li Hua. It’s my great privilege to deliver a speech themed on leading a healthy life.
Health is far more important than wealth and wisdom. Good health enables us to enjoy our life and achieve what we hope for in our career. When it comes to how to stay healthy, some fundamental principles should be brought in mind.
Firstly, it is very important for us to keep a balanced diet and maintain regular eating habits. Taking more fruits and vegetables with rich vitamins will help in the process of digestion. In addition, we'd better workout frequently to build up our body and character. Besides, we have to avoid too much work or study pressure. Getting too tired all the time may definitely weaken our defense system, making us get sick easily.
In conclusion, let's take action, and we'll lead a healthy life and become as fit as a fiddle.
Thank you!
第二节(满分25分)
Now, we couldn’t keep them, but we also couldn’t take them back. What a dilemma! All this time, we had been fostering them out of love, hadn’t we? Or had we been fattening them for a fancy meal indeed? Never did I imagine that the joy and fellowship we had would come to a brutal breakup. Plus, I didn’t have the heart to tell Leo to accept such a miserable fate for his beloved ducklings. Dreadfully guilty, I launched a sort of duck adoption agency, desperately emailing and calling animal shelters in the hope of finding them a safe home.
I was losing hope when I received an email from a woman who lived on a hobby farm. She was looking for more ducks, and she was vegetarian, which made her a perfect candidate. We carefully packed everything for our ducks before heading to their new home. As we entered the hobby farm, I felt as if we had slipped into a fairytale: bunnie shopping around sunlit grass, miniature horses trotting on the rich pasture, and grown-up ducks wandering about with their which feathers dancing against summer clouds. Reluctant and rejoiced at the same time, we left out ducks for this dream house.

(Text 1)
M: Hey Julia! I’m going to the volleyball match now.
W: How much are the tickets?
M: They are usually 5 pounds but they’re only half the price now.
W: That’s lucky. I’ve only got four pounds.
(Text 2)
W: Did you see the show last night?
M: Yes. My uncle got me a ticket for the early performance. When the clown came onstage, the audience went wild. The clown was so funny.
(Text 3)
M: Pm sorry, but the office is closed for the weekend. You can come any day between Tuesday and Friday.
W: Is the office open on Monday?
M: It isn't open at all then-Monday is their holiday.
(Text 4)
W: I really enjoyed reading it. A bit slow in terms of action but what an interesting life that man was leading. And it was so realistic, wasn't it?
M: I agree. I think it would make a great film too.
(Text 5)
W: How is your new job going?
M: Well, it takes a lot of time to put all the fruit on the shelf. And the shop is open from 8:00 a.m.to7:00p.m. So it's much more tiring than working 9:00-5:00 in an office.
(Text 6)
W: You had a talk with the teacher. So how did it go then?
M: Well, I didn't say what I wanted immediately. First we talked about the difficulty of the course and how much pressure it puts on students and soon. I mean last month I had to ask for more time on both my papers.
W: Mmm. I did too. And?
M: I finally got to the point saying I’d lost my part-time job and had money problems. She mentioned that the school offered money to those having difficulty with the costs. So I got an application form to fill in and if they accept that, it'll cover the fees for the next six months.
W: Great.
(Text 7)
W: Moving there would have so many advantages.
M: More space for a start.
W: More space, and it’s a nicer neighborhood.
M: The park opposite the house would be great for the kids. Yes, and there's a double garage.
W: But it would mean that the children have to study in a new school.
M: Yes, that's a little trouble some. And what about the cost?
W: Oh, it's pretty high. We'd have to save money but I’m sure we could manage.
(Text 8)
M: I feel upset. I couldn't spare time for football practice. I've got today's math to do, and I expect it’ll take me hours.
W: I tell you what...you can come round to the library this afternoon and we'll work on it together.
M: I don't know...You're really good at math. You’ll just finish it quickly and I can't do that.
W: It's not a competition, is it? It's more important that we both finish it, and working together will be much more fun.
M: But if I don’t do it by myself, I could be in trouble with the teacher.
W: Well, well tell her you're finding it difficult and I’m going to try and help you understand it. I’m sure she won't mind.
M: Alright then. Thank you. Perhaps II feel better about math if you help me.
(Text 9)
M: I think the new film that Fitzgerald directed is quite good. The only problem is that it's aimed at teenagers only. It holds no interest for any other age group.
W: I like the great musical performances in Fitzgerald's film. He's also a gifted violinist and guitarist, isn't he?
M: Well, I never see him play the violin or the guitar. As far as I know the piano is the only instrument he likes.
W: I’ve heard that quite a few important people dislike him. Do you know anything about this?
M: Well, Fitzgerald's expressed his opinions directly and that sometimes makes those important people annoyed. You see, he has his own ideas about life and he doesn’t simply take on other people’s because they are famous .Indeed, it is this very aspect of his personality that I find most attractive. I think the only person he admires and respects is Freddie Taylor.
W: But they have different personalities. Freddie has a warm heart and he is easy to get along with.
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. I hope you're enjoying your first day here. I don't want to keep you long. I’ve been brought back as someone who's just finished the university life, so the university asked me to talk about what I've done here as a student.
I’d just like to say one thing really, which is: do something other than your course as soon as you can. When I first came here to study history, I had no idea of what job I’d end up doing. But in my first year, I joined the university broadcasting society. I was interested in reporting, so I used to go out and find interesting stories about university life, and then comeback and present them when they were interesting enough to everyone else. I did that once a week. Then in my second year, I got a holiday job, helping out as a researcher at the local BBC radio station.
