Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that perhaps everyone has had at least once: scary. In class, she always taught us to take school seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and I was as afraid of her as anyone, including the boys who were typically naughty in the back row.
But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap objects for pranks. One such prop (道具) had two parts: an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a pool.
Of all the people I could have tricked, unexpectedly I chose Miss Baugh. At the beginning of the class, I opened her book and placed the props on one of the pages. Then I waited for the fun. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the spilled ink", she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The trick had succeeded beyond my expectations. But then 1 suddenly knew I had no control over what would happen next. When Miss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel, she discovered it was just a piece of black metal. She picked it up, her eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the question: “Who did this?"
After some hesitation, I raised my hand. Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that terrified me, and my classmates. And then, most unexpectedly, she laughed. “Well, it certainly fooled me!" she said. She returned the props to me, and for a few seconds a sweet little aged lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood.
We got back to having a class. But something had changed for me. I began to realize that, if
someone like Miss Baugh had a warm heart beneath that crusty(冷峻的) surface, then other crusty people would probably do, too. That may have been the most valuable lesson I learned.
24. Which words best describe Miss Baugh according to paragraph 1?
A. Serious and experienced. B. Easy-going and selfless.
C. Naughty and demanding. D. Scary and narrow-minded.
25. What does the underlined word “pranks" probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Bets. B. Experiments. C. Tricks. D. Strategies.
26. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. Miss Baugh's stare wasn't as terrifying as before.
B. The author was given away and finally raised his hand.
C. Miss Baugh burst into laughter and gave the props back.
D. A little aged lady entered the classroom to give a lecture.
27. What valuable lesson did the author learn?
A. Crusty people can be easily changed.
B. Crusty people may be friendly to others.
C. Crusty people are difficult to get along with.
D. Crusty people are sensitive to others' feelings.

People say “a picture is worth a thousand words", but if you look at books and movies based on them, you may question this common saying. Many times great words end up being turned into unsuccessful movies.
Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western storytelling, The Odyssey, never had an equally great movie based on it? Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great"? Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as“interesting?
One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days to read, a movie typically lasts under two hours. This means that great books can lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen. Even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can't escape from it, with fans of the books disappointed not to see some of their favorite characters in the movie versions.
Movies also disappoint us when things don't look the way we imagined them in the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews from the audience. The most questionable issue was the actress chosen to play the part of Helen. Many people thought she didn't live up to Helen's title of “the most beautiful woman in the world", influencing opinions of the movie to some extent.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source.
- What is the function of paragraph 1?
- To explain a concept. B. To quote a saying.
C. To support an argument. D. To introduce the topic. .
29. Why are some fans disappointed with the Harry Potter movies?
A. They cannot afford the tickets. B. The movies are dull and boring.
C. Their favorite characters are not included. D. Their parents prevent them watching movies.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Great books mean successful movies. B. We judge a movie in a similar way.
C. Great movies have their own rules. D. We judge a movie by its original source.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Good books, bad movies? B. Good books, good movies!
C. How to make good movies? D. How to adapt good books
D
AI is currently being used in various ways. So what does that mean? Does it mean the world will soon be overrun by robots? However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.
Actually, all customer service interactions have two aspects: emotion and urgency. New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. A robot might be able to recognize you're trying to check in for a flight recently canceled, but the emotional aspect is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the passenger has increasingly high emotions about the flight being canceled because he is flying to an important business meeting. Cases like this can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can understand the difference.
High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it's important to have a plan in place. Good companies are better at determining which cases AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. In high-emotion cases, there's no substitute (替补) for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bags. Although AI can be used to locate their bags, it can hardly deal with passengers' high emotions.
The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace human interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn't be to replace human interaction, but to improve it. The question here won't be how far we can push Al, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.
32. What is implied in paragraph 1?
A. AI has had control over the human being.B. AI can totally replace human interaction.
C. AI can handle high-emotion cases easily. D. AI still has its own limitations at present.
33. Why is the example of a canceled fight mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the passengers' high emotions.
B. To prove the efficiency of AI handling urgency.
C. To show AI can handle high-emotion cases well.
D. To stress the advantage a person has over AI.
34. Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?
A. High-stress moments require more AI tools.
B. High-stress moments can be handled by AI alone.
C. High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.
D. High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.
35. What will we focus on when using AI to handle customer service?
A. Replacing humans with new AI tools.B. Paying attention to solving problems.
C. Avoiding making trouble for customers. D. Trying to invent more new AI tools.

To be successful or fulfilled, we should plan steps and attach deadlines. Researches show that goals can get you to work harder, focus more and perform better.____36____Worse still, they can make you more likely to cheat, and less likely to thrive.
For most of us, goals are outcomes. Those who are motivated only by the desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they’re constantly anxious about the results of what they do. In fact, focusing on the outcome may make you even less likely to meet it.____37____It may be to learn to focus on process and forget the outcome entirely.
____38____That relates to the other risk of goalsetting: its focus. Research also shows that if they don’t really know how to complete the task, give them a goal that early on messes up their performance.
As an analysis outlines, when people were given performance-oriented goal, they acted in more competitive, selfish ways. Of course, it’s human nature to have aims, but we also may want to change our whole approach. Imagine the goal as a journey, which is about enjoying the movement, the particular challenges and the landscapes.____39____
So instead of focusing on where you want to be, set a goal based on the experience you want to have along the way. If you really want to find fulfillment, you have to do something else too. Give yourself over to your work, but let go of the outcome.____40____But it can be freer and more fulfilling.
A.Goals in themselves aren’t bad.
B.But they also can kill your creativity.
C.So instead of focusing on your goal, what is the key?
D.In other words, prioritize the journey not just the destination.
E.As a result, the people who focus less on their goal are more likely to meet it.
F.Research shows that tough, specific goals get better results than easy, vague ones.
G.That means living with fewer goals, and with purpose, direction and openness instead.

Sam was a 16-year-old boy. Neither of his parents had attended university. Their biggest dream was that Sam could become a lawyer. Sam hoped to live up to their expectation. That way, his parents would be very happy. However, he wasn't sure whether he would also feel happy.
Since he was a child, Sam had been interested in computer programming. He taught himself how to use a computer, and by the age of 12 he had known three different programming languages. He was quite introverted (内向的) , so he preferred staying in with his computer, rather than hanging out with friends. He did all of this in his spare time. His parents were fine with this, as long as he continued to focus on his studies.
One day, when Sam read an article online about a young CEO called Thomas O'Connor, everything changed for him. In the article, the CEO said that his company was trying to develop a new way of paying for goods online. However, they were having a problem with the security system. Thomas said if they could solve this problem, they could create the biggest and best online payment system in the world.
Sam realized he might know how to solve this problem. Without hesitation, he emailed the CEO, introducing himself and explaining his idea.
Sam forgot all about it, but a month later, the most amazing thing happened. He received an email directly from the CEO. Thomas loved his idea and decided to meet Sam in person. He said he knew Sam still needed to finish school, but that when he graduated, he would be happy to offer Sam a job in the company.

读后续写
Sam was overjoyed, but soon began to worry. What about his parents’ expectation for him? Should he tell them or turn down the offer? It was a difficult decision to make. Sam knew he had to talk to his parents. This was the opportunity of a lifetime! The next day, when he got home from school, he decided to talk to his parents about his dilemma. “Mom, Dad, I have something important to tell you,” Sam said hesitantly. “I know you both want me to become a lawyer, but I’ve been offered a job at a technology company.”
To Sam’s surprise, his parents’ reaction was far beyond what he had expected. After a moment of silence, Sam’s mother spoke up. “Sam, if you love technology, then we support you. Your happiness is what’s most important to us.” His father also nodded smilingly. Later they even offered to help him with his trip to the company. From that moment on, Sam felt more confident than ever and knew that he wouldn’t be where he was without their parents’ support.
