Ask just about any 12-year-old what their favorite time of the day is and you’ll get a resounding answer: lunch! But for Alejandro Buxton, it’s a bit different. He can’t wait to get home to dive into his candle-making business. Alejandro has a goal of being a bright light in the world.

It all started when Alejandro discovered that commercial candles gave his mom headaches. He figured there must be a way to make an all-natural candle that was safe. So he dug into the world of wax and found a soy-based wax that is chemical-free. He also found natural oils to add scent, and Smell of Love Candles was born.

Alejandro sells his candles at local fairs and to his neighbors. Then his online orders began picking up. In the fall of 2022, he started seventh grade-and opened his first retail store at Tysons Corner Center, a regional mall outside Washington, D.C.As his candles become a much bigger operation, he is always experimenting with new scents like Donut Kill My Vibe, the perfect after-school scent that gets you in the mood for a snack.

Alejandro started his business to build his college fund. But running a business is about more than making money for him. He sets aside a portion of the profit to give back to the community. Some of the money supports the local homeless shelter, and some goes into a scholarship fund for kids who need a little help with college.

His mother, Patricia, is impressed with her son and loves to spend time with him as his business grows. She says it has strengthened their bond to be together and see how his mind works, adding, “It’s been really inspiring.”

Alejandro has big goals and an even bigger heart. With all the problems that seem to rob many of us of the motivation to move forward, Alejandro has chosen to focus on a solution that works, not only for him, but as an inspiration to others, no matter their age.

24.Why did Alejandro initially produce all-natural candles?

    A.To innovate candle products.

B.To maintain his mother’s physical fitness.

C.To set up an environmental-friendly business.

D.To make money for college and helping others.

25.What makes Alejandro’s candle popular in the market?

A.Its low cost and high quality. B.Its safety and attractive scents.

C.His donation to the community. D.His care for the homeless and kids.

26.What words can be used to describe Alejandro?

A.Outgoing and hardworking. B.Caring and adventurous.

C.Creative and generous. D.Ambitious and romantic.

27.What is the text mainly about?

A.A close bond between mom and son.

    B.A smart seven-grade business owner.

C.An innovative candle with new scents.

D.A young boy’s tough journey to success.

Children who spend more time playing adventurously have lower symptoms of anxiety and depression, and were happier, according to a new research.

A study led by the University of Exeter asked parents how often their children engaged in play that was “thrilling and exciting”, where they might experience some fear and uncertainty.

The study comes at a time when today’s children have fewer opportunities for adventurous play out of sight of adults, such as climbing trees, riding bikes or jumping from high surfaces. The study sought to test theories that adventurous play offers learning opportunities that help build resilience in children, thereby helping to prevent mental health problems.

The research team surveyed nearly 2,500 parents of children aged 5 — 11 years. Parents completed questions about their child’s play, their general mental health and their mood. The research was carried out with two groups of parents: a group of 427 parents living in Northern Ireland and a nationally representative group of 1,919 parents living in Great Britain.

Researchers found that children who spend more time playing outside had fewer “internalizing problems” — characterized as anxiety and depression. The study in the Great Britain group also found that the effect was more pronounced in children from lower-income families than those growing up in higher-income households.

Helen Dodd, a professor of Child Psychology at the University of Exeter, who led the study, said, “We now urgently need to invest in and protect natural spaces, well-designed parks and adventure playgrounds, to support the mental health of our children.”

Welcoming the findings, Jacqueline O’Loughlin, Chief Executive of PlayBoard NI, said, “It is clear from the research findings that playing, taking risks and experiencing excitement outdoors make positive contributions to children’s mental health and emotional well-being. The rewards of allowing children to self-regulate and manage challenge in their play are widespread and far-reaching. Adventurous play helps children to build the resilience needed to cope with and manage stress in challenging circumstances.”

28.What may be discovered in the study about adventurous play?

A.It can improve children’s learning ability. B.It can influence children’s mental health.

C.It may be fascinated by some children. D.It may not be accepted by some parents.

    29.How was the research conducted?

A.By listing reasons. B.By conducting experiments.

C.By making questionnaires. D.By analyzing related studies.

30.What message does Jacqueline seem to convey in the text?

A.Children need to manage stess properly.

B.Public avenues should be invested in urgently.

    C.Adventurous play benefits children significantly.

D.Children should be rewarded for their self-regulation.

31.Which of the following could be the best title of the text?

A.More challenges, less anxieties B.Be adventurous, you can make it

C.Be self-regulated, you can’t get sick D.The more outdoor plays, the happier

    D

Technology has been around for a long time, and we’ve used it as a tool to communicate more rapidly and effectively. But in the past few years, technology has almost takes the place of conversation. People send messages back and forth, not realizing that they never have live contact with the other person. “That’s OK, right?” one might ask. “We’re still communicating. The relationship looks a little different, but we’re still connecting back and forth.” One study showed that only 7 percent of communication is the words we use. Thirty-eight percent is our tone of voice, and 55 percent is body language. In face-to-face conversation, we’re using all three. On the phone, we’ve lost the body language—so we’re down to two. When our communication is completely through email, texting or social media, we’re down to one.

Some people assume that technology is the enemy because it’s robbing people of their conversational skills. Indeed, sharing words in print is a form of communication, but it doesn’t convey the emotion that comes through tone of voice, facial expression, and body language. Written words can’t hold or hug. Written words can’t listen or make eye contact. When I wrote You Can’t Text a Tough Conversation, I interviewed a lot of people. Most of them loved their technology. But most of them also felt like it had got out of control, and it was messing up their relationships in some way.

Technology isn’t the enemy; it’s just a tool. It’s like a small sharp knife used by a doctor for doing an operation. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, it’s good. In the hands of a crazed criminal, it’s bad. Technology isn’t going anywhere either. The key is figuring out how to get them to work together. It’s like two porcupines(豪猪) that fall in love. They need each other, but have to learn how to keep from sticking each other and causing pain.

32.What could be the best title for the text?

A.Technology— the enemy or the tool?

B.Technology— the past or the future?

C.Technology— the traditional or the fashionable?

    D.Technology—the modern or the ancient?

33.What will happen if our communication is completely through texting?

A.We’ll lose 55 percent of the tools that help us connect.

B.We’ll lose 45 percent of the tools that help us connect.

C.We’ll lose 62 percent of the tools that help us connect.

D.We’ll lose 93 percent of the tools that help us connect.

34.What does the author tend to agree about sharing words in print?

    A.It becomes popular.

    B.It lacks human touch.

    C.It destroys many relationships.

    D.It makes life much easier.

35.What can be inferred about technology from the last paragraph?

A.It can not go too far in relationships between people.

B.It can not take the place of traditional conversation.

C.Whether it’s positive or negative depends on how we use it.

D.It should be used more smartly in the fields of medical care.

In a bustling city where people rushed from one place to another, John, a seasoned taxi driver, had spent most of his day ferrying passengers from one destination to another. Suddenly, it started pouring. He was crossing a corner when he noticed a mother with a child in her arms get out of a taxi. Instead of walking into the building nearby, she stood in the rain on the sidewalk, looking anxious and worried. He pulled up beside them and rolled down the window.

“Can I help you, ma’am?” he asked, his voice warm and friendly.

The mother turned to him pleading, “Thank you so much. My 6-year-old son Ivan suddenly has a fever and is having difficulty breathing now. I need to get him to the hospital right away.”

John suddenly realized that she was just refused by another taxi driver. Unwilling to leave them stranded in the middle of a crisis, John said, “Get in my taxi. I’ll take you to hospital.”

He swung open the door and helped the boy into the backseat. “Don’t worry, ma’am. I’ll get you there as fast as I can,” he said, his eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror.

As he drove, John could feel the boy’s body trembling. He could hear the mother’s whispered prayers and the sound of her hands clasping together tightly. He knew he had to act fast. Despite the urgency of the situation, John remained calm and composed, skillfully weaving through traffic and red lights. A few minutes later, they arrived at the hospital, and Ivan was rushed inside for treatment.

Half an hour later, the boy was out of danger. “It was lucky that you made it here in time,” said the doctor. “Thank you, thank you so much,” the woman said, her voice choked with emotion. She then turned to John, fishing in her pocket for cash to pay him. “I have a principle: No fare for those making trips to hospital!” John refused, and quickly left.
