Amazing Scientists Who Happen to Be Teenagers
We’ve got a list of teen scientists from a variety of fields.
    Jack Andraka
Jack Andraka created a biological sensor for testing cancer at an early stage. He says that the paper sensor is 168 times faster, 26,667 times less expensive and 400 times more sensitive than technology nowadays.
He’s the youngest person to have spoken in front of the Royal Society of Medicine.
    Taylor Wilson
Taylor Wilson was the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion (核聚变). He was inspired by The Radioactive Boy Scout, a novel in which a kid tries and fails to build a nuclear reactor.
Taylor thought he could do better. Long story short, he wanted to build a small nuclear reactor. And he did it at the age of fourteen. He received a Thiel Fellowship, which gave him $100,000 to work on his own research.
    Sara Volz
Sara Volz performed experiments in which she grew algae (藻类) based on their oil output for the purpose of growing them as biofuel. This research is especially important as the world continues to search for a way to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy. She won the top prize of $100,000 in the Intel Science Talent Search.
    Daniel Burd
Plastic usually takes thousands of years to decompose (分解), but this high school student Daniel Burd managed to do it in three months. In an experiment, he mixed plastic bags and a special kind of dirt together, and found that they did decompose faster. He then performed tests to find the bacteria (细菌) responsible for decomposing the plastics.
His solution only produces water and small amounts of carbon dioxide. He says it could easily be used elsewhere.
    1. Who invented a medical instrument?
    A. Jack Andraka. B. Taylor Wilson. C. Sara Volz. D. Daniel Burd.
    2. What excited Taylor Wilson’s interest in his invention?
    A. A travel program. B. Plastic pollution. C. Energy shortage. D. A story book.
    3. What do we know about Daniel Burd’s invention?
    A. It is made from plastics. B. It does little harm to the environment.
    C. It was completed in three months. D. It is widely used in everyday waste.

    B
In 2017, besides a full-time job, I also coached two basketball teams. I remember the days when we had a quick meal in the car after work and tried to figure out which soccer game, basketball game, or family event we were driving towards. We just intentionally created family time to connect with each other.
One day when I finished a playhouse for the kids, three-year-old Matthew came and asked to help. “Sorry, kid, but I’m all done,” I replied. “Oh no...”cried Matthew. Now, any three-year-old crying after missing a project with their dad would be sweet. Crying Matthew looked like a newborn cat, melting a heart of stone. But what could I do? I had finished the project and now I had to disappoint the little boy. Suddenly I realized, “he just wants to do any project with me. Just make one up!”
I caught two pieces of useless wood, “You see this wood here? I need these two pieces of wood to be held together really tight. Can you help me?”
As light smile was on his face, “Yes!”
The result was a pleased little boy whose heart was full. What I saw was two pieces of junk wood. What he saw was the connection with his father. He saw companionship priority (优先权), worth and a place to belong to.
Parents always think, “I’ll create family time next Saturday.” But you don’t always have to do big things to fill children’s hearts. In fact the simple act of being present means the world to little hearts. Look at that face! Those are the eyes of a little one who received nothing. And everything.
    4. Why did the family eat in the car after work?
    A. To avoid heavy traffic jams. B. To spend more time with family members.
    C. To remove the trouble of cooking. D. To have extra basketball classes.
    5. What do we know about Matthew in Paragraph 2?
    A. He wanted to build the playhouse independently.
    B. He was disappointed with the playhouse.
    C. He wanted to do projects with his dad.
    D. He missed the school project and was very sad.
    6. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
    A. Efficient and patient. B. Educated and strict.
    C. Open-minded and generous. D. Thoughtful and caring.
    7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Looking After Kids Is Easy B. A Role Model for Kids Counts
    C. Family Events Bring Us Together D. Balancing Work and Family Is Important
B 5. C 6. D 7. C
根据文章第一段“I remember the days when we had a quick meal in the car after work and tried to figure out which soccer game, basketball game, or family event we were driving towards. We just intentionally created family time to connect with each other.(我还记得那些日子,我们下班后在车里匆匆吃了顿饭,然后努力弄清楚我们要去看哪场足球比赛、篮球比赛或家庭活动。我们只是有意地创造了家庭时间来彼此交流)”推知,作者一家选择在车里吃饭是为了能有更多的时间陪伴家人。故选B。
    【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Suddenly I realized, ‘he just wants to do any project with me. Just make one up!’(突然我意识到,‘他只是想和我一起做任何项目。编一个吧!’)”可知,Matthew只是想和父亲一起完成一个搭建项目。故选C。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“In 2017, besides a full-time job, I also coached two basketball teams. I remember the days when we had a quick meal in the car after work and tried to figure out which soccer game, basketball game, or family event we were driving towards.(2017年,除了全职工作,我还执教过两支篮球队。我记得有几天,我们下班后在车里吃了一顿快餐,试图弄清楚我们要开车去看哪场足球赛、篮球赛或家庭活动)”和第二段“Now, any three-year-old crying after missing a project with their dad would be sweet. Crying Matthew looked like a newborn cat, melting a heart of stone. But what could I do? I had finished the project and now I had to disappoint the little boy. Suddenly I realized, ‘he just wants to do any project with me. Just make one up!’
根据全文内容,结合倒数第二段中“What I saw was two pieces of junk wood. What he saw was the connection with his father. He saw companionship, priority, worth and a place to belong to.(我看到的是两块废木头。他看到的是与他父亲的联系。他看到了陪伴、优先权、价值和归属)”可知,文章主要讲述的家庭活动让家人们凝聚在一起。所以C项“家庭活动让我们聚在一起”适合作为文章标题。故选C。
    C
Close to the North Pole, remote and rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to safeguard agriculture. Yet at the end of a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity’s most precious treasure, the largest and most diverse seed collection—more than a half-billion seeds.
With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity (多样性) of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (地窖) represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation (贮藏) of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits (特征) found within the seeds: the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot, dry weather.
In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below-zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining (保留) their ability to grow for thousands of years.
Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea.
We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee. But we were tired, fed up, and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.
The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment— about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant, long-lasting, and worthy of who we are and wish to be.
    8. According to the passage, the Seed Vault is ________ .
    A. a seed gene bank that stores diverse seeds for future agriculture
    B. a lab where researchers study how to maintain the diversity of crops
    C. a stone room that contains the seeds of endangered crops
    D. a tunnel where the collected seeds are displayed
    9. The underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
    A. mature B. alive C. clean D. valuable
    10. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
    A. what people do to study the seeds. B. where people keep the seeds.
    C. why the seeds are protected. D. how the seeds are preserved.
    11. What can we know from the passage?
    A. the Seed Vault offers a solution to climate change.
    B. most countries took part in rescuing the seed varieties.
    C. many people originally considered building the Seed Vault unwise.
    D. the Seed Vault guarantees to prevent the loss of crop diversity.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第二段“With growing evidence that unchecked climate change will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity (多样性) of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (地窖) represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation (贮藏) of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits (特征) found within the seeds: the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot, dry weather. 故选A项。
根据第三段“Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remain viable for hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining (保留) their ability to grow for thousands of years. (在这样的条件下被冻在山里,大多数主要作物的种子将保持viable数百年或更长时间。有些种子能够保留它们生长数千年的能力)”可知,下句Seeds of some are capable of retaining (保留) their ability to grow for thousands of years可知,有些种子在数千年后,依然能发芽生长,与上一句为顺接关系,故推知:保存在这里的大多数主要作物的种子几百年之后还是有生命力的。
根据第三段“In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems enveloped in below- zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. (在密封的盒子里,在多个锁着的门后面,由电子安全系统监控,在零度以下的环境中,被许多岩石包围,数以亿计的种子被山中堡垒所保护)”可知,第三段主要讲了种子在这个种子库中是如何储存的,故选D项。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea. (但早在2004年,当种子库被提出时,它被视为一个疯狂的、不切实际的、昂贵的想法)”中的几个形容词(crazy, impractical, and expensive)可知,许多人最初认为建立种子库是不明智的。故选C项。
    D
When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We’ve all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don’t think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you’ve ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.
Most people don’t make these choices consciously though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There’s no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other’s lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don’t get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty? Shouldn’t you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn’t you stick by them?
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to their highest and best as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren’t showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyally sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I’m sorry, but I can’t have you in my life anymore." But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it’s often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it is also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.
    12. When experiencing major life changes, people may ________.
    A. join a new social community B. influence their friends around
    C. choose their friendships purposely D. have their people environment changed
    13. What can be concluded from Paragraph 3 in the passage?
    A. Everyone has at least one friend.
    B. Friendship still exists though there’s less connection.
    C. It is unnecessary to make new friends.
    D. You ought to treat your old and new friend equally.
    14. What is the author’s opinion on the loyalty to friends?
    A. Never betray your close friends whatever happens.
    B. Correct their mistakes while you guard their goodness.
    C. Stick by your friends even though they do harm lo you.
    D. Break up with your friends immediately if they smoke.
    15. How should we behave when employed by a violent boss?
    A. We should accept what we are told to do.
    B. We should stay silent and be in favor of it.
    C. We should bravely disobey him if he is wrong.
    D. We should give our boss courage to continue.
D 13. B 14. B 15. C

根据第三段前三句“There’s no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other’s lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations.”
根据第五段第二句“It means being loyal to their highest and best as well.”和最后一句“True loyally sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.”
根据最后一段前两句“It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I’m sorry, but I can’t have you in my life anymore." But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it’s often the best thing for the other person too.”

C选项中These指代上文drinking and smoking。
根据后文“If you are the kind of person who is open to advice complain to a friend about your stress. Friends can work as a support group, and they may provide you with solutions. Sometimes, you can't see the easy way out of situation when you are standing right in the middle of it. (如果你是那种愿意听取建议的人,那就向朋友抱怨你的压力。 朋友可以作为一个支持团体,他们可能会为你提供解决方案。 有时候,当你站在困境的正中间时,你看不到摆脱困境的简单方法)”可知,后文提到通过向朋友倾诉自己的压力来缓解压力,即通过交谈来缓解压力,故A选项“好好谈一谈”符合语境,故选A。
    【20题详解】
根据上文“●Make a list. Having too much to do may cause you to rush around because, if you are moving faster, it feels as if you are getting more done. (●列一个列表。有太多事情要做可能会让你东奔西跑,因为如果你走得更快,就会感觉你完成的事情更多)”以及后文“Make a to-do list. Do the big, important things last, after you have achieved several of the small things. That way, you will approach the big things already feeling good.(列一个待办事项清单。在你完成了一些小事情之后,再去做那些大的、重要的事情。这样,你就会以良好的感觉去处理大事)”可知,上文提到“你走得更快,就会感觉你完成的事情更多”这一观念,后文则提出要列一个待办事项清单,建议在完成了一些小事情之后,再去做那些大的、重要的事情,可见本句与上文构成转折,说明上文提到的观点是错误的,故E选项“但这是一个错误的印象”符合语境,故选E。
