Born on May 27, 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania, Rachel Carson became an avid explorer as well as reader, and took an interest in writing stories. By age 10, she had published her first story in St. Nicholas. She would often read this magazine, as well as many others that concerned the natural world. In 1925, she finished at the top of her class in high school in a class of 45 students.
Carson would go on to attend the Pennsylvania College for Women, which is known as Chatham University now. This is where she would end up pursuing the sciences, in this case biology. She would eventually attend Johns Hopkins University in 1929, continuing her studies in zoology and genetics.
Carson completed her Master's in zoology in June of 1932, and went to work at a local radio station. Here she would write educational broadcasts for a weekly radio show called Romance Under the Waters. This led her to her job at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, and she became just the second woman to be employed by the bureau.
In 1951, Carson had her book The Sea Around Us published, which explains the complexity of the ocean to non-scientists. Carson wrote the book with poetry and science, and she intended to spark in her readers a sense of the fragility of the world's ecosystem. The Sea Around Us made Carson the voice of public science in America, an internationally recognized authority on the oceans, and established her reputation as a nature writer of the first rank.
In 1962, Carson became well-known when her most famous book Silent Spring was published. This book described the negative effects of pesticides on the environment. Her concern with pesticides dated back to the 1940s, but no one would take her seriously until this book was finally published. On April 14th, 1964, Carson passed away due to a heart attack but her work towards preserving the environment has continued to this day. Silent Spring was even republished in 1994 with an introduction from then vice-president Al Gore.

The canyons(峡谷) of America's Southwest are deep, ancient openings in the earth. They look as if they formed as the earth split.
Forty million years ago, the Colorado River began cutting through the area around the present-day Grand Canyon. The river carried dirt and pieces of stone that slowly ate away at the surrounding rock. It left a pathway of enormous rock openings. At the same time, forces deep within he earth pushed up the surrounding land. Rain, snow, ice, wind and plant roots rubbed at the top of this new canyon. Below, the river continued to uncover more and more levels of ancient rock.
The Grand Canyon measures 2,500 meters from the canyon floor to its highest point. Because of its size, the weather at the top of the canyon is often much different from that at the bottom. On some winter days, for example, you may find cold winds and snow at the top .But at the bottom of the canyon, you may find warm winds and flowers.
The Grand Canyon is home to some 2, 000 plant species. Some of these species can only be found in the park. The park is also home to more than 370 species of birds, 90 kinds of mammals and 40 kinds of reptiles. Many of the birds spend the whole lives in the Grand Canyon. Other species depend on the Grand Canyon for food and shelter during large migrations. The Grand Canyon was named the Globally Important Bird Area in 2014 because of the role it plays in protecting many species of birds.
In 1869, John Wesley Powell from the USA explored the Grand Canyon. He recorded much of what we know today about the area. Powell and his group traveled in four boats along the Colorado River. He and his group of explorers knew very little about getting over the fast waters of the Colorado River. In many places, boats could be turned over by giant waves.
8、It was _____ that formed the Grand Canyon.
A.the force from rain, snow and ice
    B.the force from earthquakes
    C.the force from the earth
    D.the combination of natural forces

    A.②④③⑤① B.①②③④⑤ C.②⑤③①④ D.②①③④⑤
10、We can infer from the passage that_____.
A.the Grand Canyon attracts millions of visitors worldwide
B.the Grand Canyon is home to adventurous people
C.it took thousands of years to form the Grand Canyon
D.the environment of the Grand Canyon is perfect for wildlife
11、Which magazine can mostly likely contain this passage?

Tears not only deliver oxygen and nutrients to our eyes and remove waste, but also contain various chemicals originally present in blood, some of which serve as markers of some diseases. That's a primary reason why doctors order blood tests. But it also means that physicians—and maybe in the near future, you—can look for signs of illness by looking at your tears.
Scientists have already found that markers of many serious diseases including cancers are found in tears. And recently, a technology named Tear Exo has been developed for breast cancer screening using tears collected by patients themselves. That could offer a cheaper way of testing and aid in the earlier detection of deadly disease.
But the potential advantages of tears as indicators of health go beyond occasional testing. One tear-based technology is a small contact lens that continuously monitors a patient's biomarkers, significantly improving disease prevention and detection. It has attracted the attention of some major companies such as Novartis, and is currently under development in research laboratories around the world.
More recently, a smart contact lens has been successfully developed for continuous monitoring and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Such a product probably won't be ready for commercial use in several years. But according to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, about 45 million people in the U.S. already wear contact lens to correct their sight. Switching to a smart version would be simple for them.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential in tears beyond crying. Tears can provide an inexpensive, rapid and easy-to-use choice to monitor health. Given the advantage of tear technology, such technology will almost certainly bring about more effective prevention of diseases—rather than having to deal with the difficulty of treating them.
12、In which way do people benefit from Tear Exo?
A.Preventing breast cancer. B.Saving time for screening tests.
C.Reducing the costs of testing. D.Detecting some diseases earlier.
13、What can we infer about the smart contact lens?
A.It has a promising future. B.It can improve patient's sight.
C.It is available on the market. D.It monitors eyesight continuously.
14、What is the author's attitude to tear technology?
    A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Cautious.
15、Which can be a suitable title of the text?
A.What role do tears play? B.Tears contain high levels of chemical.
C.How can we prevent tears? D.Your eyes may save your life someday.

We were a crowd of people who took the bus every day that summer several years ago. During the early morning ride from the suburb(郊区), we sat as a cheerless and silent crowd. One of the passengers was an old man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens(老年人) every morning. He walked with a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty, boarded the bus and sat down alone behind the driven. No one ever paid much attention to him.
Then one July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled short-sightedly down through the bus before he sat down. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically, smiled and said in a loud voice, “And a very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and replied with “Good morning” in a low voice.
The following weeks we were more alert(警觉的). Our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide out-of-date tie. He said “Good morning” to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smilingly and asked, “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers applauded for him. Charlie bowed and waved the flowers before he sat down.
Every morning after that Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the regular passengers began bringing him flowers for his bouquet(花束), gently saying shyly “Here”. Everyone smiled. The men started to joke about it, talk to each other and share his updates.
The summer went by and autumn was closing in, when one morning Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn't there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick.

④根据小段标题“Find a good time to talk.(找一个合适的时间交谈)”及上文“Choose a time when you’re both feeling reasonably relaxed and don’t have to rush off to other commitments.(选择一个你们都感觉很放松的时间,不用急着去做其他事情)”可知,本段主要讲述交谈时间的选择。由此可知,C. You can clear your schedule if necessary.(如果有必要,你可以清空你的日程安排)能够承接上文,这样你就不用急着去做其他事情了。故选C。
⑤根据小段标题“Be a good listener.(做一个好的倾听者)”及上文“It might be tempting(诱人的) to offer your friend advice about how to deal with what they’re experiencing, but the most helpful thing you can do if they choose to open up to you is simply listen.(给你的朋友提供如何处理他们所经历的事情的建议可能很诱人,但如果他们选择向你敞开心扉,你能做的最有帮助的事就是倾听)”可知,本段主要讲述我们要做一个好的倾听者,让朋友来主导对话。由此可知,B. Yes, the staff said they knew who we were talking about. The elderly gentleman was fine, but he hadn’t been coming to the center that week. One of his close friends had died at the weekend. They expected him hack on Monday. After hearing that about Charlie, we kept silent and cheerless the rest of the way to work.
The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop without a tie, locking particularly sad. He seemed to have felt down again. He just climbed onto the bus without a single word. Inside the bus was a silence similar to that in a church. Even though no one had talked about it, all those of us, who he had made such an impression on that summer, sat with our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands. Seeing the flowers in our hands, our sad friend smiled with tears.
