During the month of September, over 500,000 high-school graduates in Sudan will be taking their university entrance exams, and to discourage applicants (申请人) from cheating, the mobile Internet will be turned off nationwide for three hours every day.
Sudan has a long history of turning off its Internet during protests in order to disrupt the communication of participants, but this year it is using the Internet shutdown as a measure to prevent “large scale (规模) cheating” during university entrance exams. At 8 am sharp, September 16, the people of Sudan realized that despite having paid their bills on time, their mobile Internet service wasn’t working. After receiving thousands of complaints, Internet operators announced that the Government had ordered a daily mobile Internet shutdown until September 24, as a way to discourage university applicants from cheating in exams.
According to news organization EFE, the Sudanese government adopted the controversial measure to prevent the large scale exam cheating that occurred three years ago, when exam questions were revealed online and the Ministry of Education had to organize a second exam session.
Every day, between 8 am and 11 am the mobile Internet is turned off nationwide, which leaves about 13 million mobile data users unable to visit the World Wide Web on their cell phones. The measure only affects the monile Internet, allowing essential government departments to remain functional.
In the past few years we have used some questionable cheating prevention techniques, like making students wear cardboard boxes on their heads, or having them take off their coats, but Sudan’s daily Internet shutdown is probably the most extreme one yet.

When I was a little girl, I spent memorable holidays with my grandmother, who lived in a small village. She was a farmer with a stooped (弯曲的) back that made it seem like she was always leaning forward to examine something. Early in the morning, she would tie a cloth around her waist and set out to the farm. I would skip breathlessly alongside, trying to keep up. On our way, she would greet everyone we passed.
There was the standard greeting, “Did you wake up on the right foot this morning?” Then, the more personalized greetings. To Patriarch Kosi who sat under the mango tree, she would ask, “Are the grandchildren in good health?” To the Bean Stew Seller who was preparing to serve breakfast, she would inquire, “Are your boys well?”
Sometimes, the greetings were spoken soothingly (安慰地). When we walked past the widow, Dada Mawusi, many months after her husband’s death, Grandmother would say directly, “How is your grieving?” She didn’t like to beat around the bush. The greeting made more sense to her to acknowledge the woman’s suffering, and in doing so, empathize (理解) with her.
The people that Grandmother greeted would respond similarly. “I see you have your granddaughter with you today. How is her father?” or “I see you have woken up before the cock’s crow today. May it be a fruitful day at the farm.” As a young girl, I thought these greetings were unnecessarily time-consuming. What I now realize is that the greetings increased a sense of belonging. My grandmother taught me that there is always time to greet someone before getting down to business. You can always take a few extra seconds to say a greeting to a person. We enrich our society when we acknowledge the unique presence of one another.

Across America, libraries used to reach out to readers by sending bookmobiles into school parking lots, street corners and rural byways (侧道). Now, those rolling reading rooms are becoming fewer.
One town in northern New England just lost its bookmobile. The Cobleigh Public Library in Lyndonville, Vt., had managed to keep its van (有蓬货车) rolling until about a month ago, when it died.
If you want to hear first-hand what it’s like to go through a whole month without a single visit from the bookmobile, just ask the preschoolers at a daycare centre.
“We miss the bookmobile,” one child says. “Yeah, we miss the bookmobile until it comes here,” says another.
Now that the bookmobile has broken down, librarians have to bring books in their own cars for story hour. Daycare provider Anneka Bickford says it’s not as exciting as having a big, brightly painted van roll into the driveway and open its doors so the kids can choose their own books.
“It’s getting the children involved with what a library is, how to check out books and how to return books,” Bickford says. “They would do programs with the children; singing, dancing, themes—so it’s the excitement of the library that we can’t give to the children.”
It’s not the first bookmobile to bite the dust. Over the years, Vermont’s large number has reduced to three or four. Lyndonville’s head librarian, Cindy Karasinski, says replacement costs have risen quickly.
“New bookmobiles are expensive; just one of them costs $90,000,” she says, “so that seems not the way we are going to go.” Sadly, Karasinksi says, money that used to support bookmobiles has nearly dried up.
However, not everyone hopes the Cobleigh bookmobile gets a second chance. Some in town feel the bookmobile has served its purpose and become a financial burden

About 7 million people over the age of 65 have been diagnosed with depression, and many more could be suffering. It is high time that you learned how to know the signs and help them. Depression is a big problem for seniors, especially those who are lack of care and attention. Older people are much more likely to be alone, socially isolated(孤立的) or feel a lack of purpose. Sometimes older people have a much more difficulty time admitting mental health problems. Many times, the link between depression and physical illness is much stronger.
The elderly don’t like to express sadness the way that young people do. Older people who are depressed may have more physical troubles and may pay more attention to them. Depression may result from early memory loss and meanwhile, depression will make a person forget more and faster. A patient with early memory loss and depression really needs to be treated for the depression to slow the memory loss. A mood change is also a sign of depression. If a previously calm person becomes increasingly annoyed, or a previously clean person no longer bothers to shower or clean up, that person should be considered.
Don’t tell older adults that you think they may be depressed, as older adults ----particularly men see depression as a weakness. What you should do is tell them you’re worried about their health. Tell them they seem to be out of sorts.
Say you just want to check with the doctor to see what’s going on. Once you’ve used physical symptoms to get that person to agree to a check-up, mention your fear to the doctor and allow the doctor to approach the subject of depression with the patient.

I recently gave my adult class homework. The assignment was to “go to someone you love and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or haven’t shared those words with for a long time”.
That doesn’t sound like a tough assignment, but most of the men in that group were over 35 and were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho(男子汉的)”.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. One of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
He began by saying, “I didn’t feel that I had anyone to say those words to. But as I began driving home, I knew exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’to. Five years ago, my father and I had a disagreement and never resolved it. We hardly spoke to each other.” “The next morning, I called my dad. When he answered the phone, I said, ‘Dad, can I come over tonight? I have something to tell you.’ I assured him it wouldn’t take long, so he finally agreed.”
“At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell. As luck would have it, Dad answered the door.”
“I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you’”
“His face softened, his wrinkles(皱纹)disappeared and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’”
“Dad and I hugged for a moment longer. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.”
“Two days after that visit, my dad had a heart attack and ended up unconscious in the hospital. I don’t know if he’ll make it.”
“My message to all of you is this:Don’t wait to do the things that need to be done. Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if I had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever — but not me… I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn’t understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn’t pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn’t want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, “The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time.”
I think they were indulging(沉溺) in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don’t realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn’t due to some miraculous(不可思议的) event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.

    4.Ill/Sick.
5.I will give them more care and attention and try to have them examined by the doctor.

根据“Depression is a big problem for seniors, especially those who are lack of care and attention. Older people are much more likely to be alone, socially isolated(孤立的) or feel a lack of purpose. ”(抑郁症是老年人的一个大问题,尤其是那些缺乏照顾和关注的老年人。年纪大的人更容易孤独、被社会孤立或感到缺乏目标。)可知,这篇文章主要讲述的是老年人中存在的抑郁症问题。故填Depression in the elderly。
根据第一段中“Depression is a big problem for seniors, especially those who are lack of care and attention.”(抑郁症是老年人的一个大问题,尤其是那些缺乏照顾和关注的老年人。) For those who lack care and attention。
根据第三段中“Don’t tell older adults that you think they may be depressed, as older adults --- particularly men–see depression as a weakness.”(你认为他们可能抑郁,不要告诉把你的想法告诉老年人,因为老年人——尤其是男性——把抑郁视为一种弱点。) They wouldn’t like to admit them。
根据文章第三段中的“What you should do is tell them you’re worried about their health.”(你应该做的是告诉他们你担心他们的健康。) out of sorts意为“生病的”,故填Ill/Sick。
根据题干“What will you do if your grandparents suffer from depression?”(假设我的祖父母为抑郁症),我会给他们更多的关爱,并且努力带他们去看医生,故填I will give them more care and attention and try to have them examined by the doctor.

根据第二段“That doesn’t sound like a tough assignment, but most of the men in that group were over 35 and were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho(男子汉的)”.”(这个任务听起来不难,但是那组大部分学生年龄超过35岁,认为表达情感是缺乏男子汉气概的。) They were taught to hide their emotions.
根据第四段“Five years ago, my father and I had a disagreement and never resolved it. We hardly spoke to each other.”(五年前,我和我的父亲有一次争执,从未解决,之后很少说话。) They had a disagreement which wasn’t resolved and they hardly spoke to each other.
根据第五段“At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell. As luck would have it, Dad answered the door.”(在五点半的时候,我到了父母家门口,按了门铃,父亲开了门。)
根据第七段“His face softened, his wrinkles(皱纹)disappeared and he began to cry.”(父亲的年不再那么僵硬,脸上的皱纹也没有了,开始哭了。) He was touched by his son’s words.
I usually talk with my parents, because communication can break down all barriers.

1.Only when the author was seriously ill. / Only when the author had a high fever.
2.Because he thought making movies couldn’t help make lots of money in a short time.
3.It will take lots of efforts, determination, and time.
4.You have to work hard in order to succeed.
5.Yes, because working hard makes us successful and it’s hard working, rather than intelligence, that matters.

根据第一段“When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if I had a high fever. (当我还是个孩子的时候,我的父母只有一个办法让我呆在家里不上学,那就是如果我发高烧。)”可知,只有当作者发高烧的时候,他的父母才会允许他呆在家里不上学。故答案为Only when the author was seriously ill. / Only when the author had a high fever.
根据第二段“He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn’t pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn’t want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. (他花了20分钟讲述了自己对电影的热爱,但他不会去追求,因为他不知道自己是否能赚到足够的钱,也不想浪费时间,因为要想把电影做大需要几年的时间。)”可知,那位年轻人之所以放弃做电影的梦想是因为他觉得做电影花费的时间太长,而且也不一定能赚到足够的钱。故答案为Because he thought making movies couldn’t help make lots of money in a short time.
根据第三段“Many people these days don’t realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn’t due to some miraculous(不可思议的) event. (如今,许多人没有意识到,当事情似乎立即发生时,这仅仅是因为他们付出了大量的努力、决心和时间,而不是由于某种奇迹事件。)”可知,在作者看来,成功需要付出大量的努力、决心和时间。故答案为It will take lots of efforts, determination, and time.
根据最后一段“If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat. (如果你想成名,成名就要付出代价,下面是你如何开始为此付出代价的……汗水。)”可知,这句话想表达的意思是:要想成功就需要努力。故答案为You have to work hard in order to succeed.
根据“In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard. (在节目中,舞蹈老师告诉她的学生,“如果你想成名,成名就要付出代价,这就是你如何开始付出代价……挥汗如雨。”每次我们观看节目时,我父亲都会自豪地说,老师是多么正确,因为为了成功,你必须努力工作。)”可知,这篇文章作者想要表达的中心就是:想要成功,就必须努力。所以给出的答案要围绕这个中心展开。故答案为Yes, because working hard makes us successful and it’s hard working, rather than intelligence, that matters.
