Nature is full of surprise. Nick Castro, a pest control expert in California sees many strange things in his work. But even he was stunned when he came across hidden treasure belonging to a pair of woodpeckers(啄木鸟).
Nick Castro was called to a house in Sonoma County when its owner noticed worms(虫)coming out of the wall. Much to his surprise, when he made a small cut in the wall, acorns(橡子)started pouring out—and they didn’t stop coming.
“They just kept coming and coming, nonstop. I thought the acorns were only about a quarter of the way up the wall. But it turned out they reached high up to the top floor,” Castro said. The full amount of stored acorns ended up being 700 pounds in total, filling eight large bags which were so heavy that they were hard to pick up. It took three workers a full day to clean them.
Castro believed the acorns were kept by a pair of woodpeckers and it could have taken up to five years for the birds to do it. The birds dropped their treasures through a hole in the chimney(烟囱)and entered through a separate hole to enjoy them. The birds also kept acorns in other places of the house,” said Castro.
Woodpeckers live in the western and southwestern US. They usually keep acorns in holes they’ve made in dead trees. Castro wrote online, “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s a one in a hundred thousand chance to find something this interesting.”

As more people move away from petrol (汽油) cars, need for electric vehicles (EV) (电动汽车) is rising. It’s not just the cars on our roads. Buses and trucks are changing into battery power, too.
That’s great news for the environment. However, building enough charging stations for all these new EVs is a huge problem for many countries.
Detroit, in the United States, will soon be trying out an idea that could help. In the center of the city, there will soon be a main road that can wirelessly (无线) charge electric vehicles while they are running. No parking. No plugging in (插上插头). While the vehicles are on the road, they can get charged up.
Oren Ezer founded Electreon with his partner, which is the company behind the idea. He said, “The possibility of charging roads and cities is almost endless. We are reshaping the future of transportation.” It’s not just in Detroit. The company is already working on projects in some European countries, too.
Some mobile phones can charge wirelessly. You just place them on charging pad and the battery refills without needing to plug them in. Electreon’s road technology charger is similar to this idea. Coils (线圈) are fixed under the surface of the road. Electric vehicles are fitted with special receivers. When the vehicles drive over the coils, their batteries get power.
As well as helping encourage more people to use EVs, it’s hoped that the technology could allow for smaller batteries. The most expensive part of an EV is its battery. Trucks, for example, require big batteries so that enough charge can be stored to take a vehicle hundreds of kilometers before the next recharge. But if a vehicle could charge on the move, then a smaller battery might be all that’s needed.
Maybe, before too long, we will all be riding around in self-charging, self-driving cars.
52.According to the passage, what problem do many countries face with the rising need for EVs?
A.Wasting too much petrol. B.Having a few parking lots.
C.Being short of charging stations. D.Polluting the environment.
53.Which of the following best shows what Oren Ezer said?
A.It’s impossible to build roads that can charge EVs.
B.They are changing the shape of cars, buses and trucks.
C.They will make endless effort to improve roads.
D.There is a bright future for the idea of road charging.
54.________ is needed when the EVs get power on charging roads.
A.Parking B.A charging wire C.Plugging in D.A special receiver
55.Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To introduce a new idea on charging EVs.
B.To provide much information about EVs.
C.To encourage readers to buy and drive EVs.
D.To share a company behind the self-charging idea.

We’ve all been there—staring at a book, hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably wondered, “Is there any way to improve memory?” So, why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this?
Every student knows that it’s helpful to review what they’ve studied before. According to experts, we can learn things better if we wait some time before trying to study them again. They say that trying to retrieve (记起) something after you have had some time to forget it will make it easier to remember in future.
Similarly, studies have shown that taking some time to just do nothing after studying might mean that you can remember things better afterwards. It is not clear why this happens. But some think it has to do with the relationship between long-term (长期的) and short-term memory.
Another study tip is to change between different topics as you study. This can help you make connections between different ideas. Now, connecting them to each other or to images (图像) is often considered a good way to remember something. The world memory winner Jonathan Hancock says how picturing pieces of information in different places or connecting them to memorable images makes them easier to remember.
There are also more things that we can do to improve our memory. Hancock says that being generally organized makes things easier for your brain. Many other experts also suggest that we should get a lot of rest and exercise. So, the good news to take from this is that while it may be hard, improving our memory is something we can do.

Why do Chinese players always win the first prize in the main table tennis events? Thomas J. Scheuer from the US studies at Tsinghua University. He is also a table tennis player. China has many talented table tennis players who train really hard. Scheuer also heard that another reason is that there are a large number of ping-pong fans for the sport in the country. Almost everyone can play a little. To see whether it’s true, he went to a park and visited a club to find out. The active scene surprised him.
At a park in Beijing, Scheuer saw many old people playing table tennis. A man said that he had been playing the sport for more than 50 years. He plays for two hours every day. He was even named one of the “Beijing Masters” when he was 70. “I’ve noticed that I’m the youngest player here in the park,” said Scheuer.
Then Scheuer visited a table tennis club. There, many kids were practicing. A boy said he hoped that he could be an excellent player like Ma Long one day. A girl said playing table tennis helped her relax after doing schoolwork.
The visit made Scheuer truly admire great interests that Chinese people have for table tennis. As China’s national sport, table tennis is as popular as soccer and basketball here.
