It was a history-making moment at Miller & Miller’s Canadian & Discoveries Arts auction(拍卖) when the hammer finally came down for a rare Maud Lewis painting for $350,000.
Lewis was a Canadian artist who painted brightly colored scenes. She sold her paintings by the side of the road for $2 to $3. Painting wasn’t easy, since she suffered from a physical challenge that made moving painful. After reading an article about her, John Kinnear, also an artist mailed her boxes of painting supplies. At the time, Lewis lived in a one-room house with no electricity, using simple house paint to create. After receiving the supplies, Lewis wrote back insisting on repaying him with some of her paintings.
Kinnear sold some of them sending part of the money back to Lewis and using the remainder to buy her more paint. Gradually, the two artists developed long-lasting friendship.
Kinnear was friends with Irene and Tony Demas, who owned a restaurant where he ate lunch every day. One day, Kinnear told them he had some paintings by an artist and wondered if they might consider buying one of them. “When we saw the paintings, our jaw almost dropped,” recalls Irene. “We had never seen anything like them. They were so childlike, with cats and cows.” They ended up agreeing to the trade, choosing a painting called Black Trunk.
Over 50 years later, they’re long retired and now considering travelling more. They hoped to sell the painting. In the years since Lewis died, her paintings have become famous. But it was recent scare that really urged them into action. After having non-glare glass added to the painting, the business street where the framer(装裱师) lived burned to the ground just days after they picked up their painting. “We saw that Miller &Miller’s had sold one not long ago. We trusted the Miller brothers.” says Irene.
4、Why did John Kinnear send Lewis boxes of painting supplies?
    A. To exchange for her paintings. B. To offer her assistance.
    C. To teach her painting techniques. D. To befriend with her.
5、How did Irene and Tony Demas feel when they first saw Lewis’s paintings?
    A. Confused. B. Panicked. C. Shocked. D. Embarrassed.
6、What was the real reason for the Demas’ selling Black Truck?
    A. They were eventually persuaded by the framer.
    B. They were afraid the painting would lose value.
    C. They fear something unexpected would happen.
    D. They were in desperate need of money to travel.
7、What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To recommend an auction house. B. To introduce a painting artist.
    C. To explain a trend in art collecting. D. To tell the story of a painting.
It was a very hot August day in 2019. Entomology graduate student Skye Harnsberger and her research team parked their car and walked into the tall grass. As they entered a narrow path, the team looked for the milkweed among other plants. When spotted, it was examined and recorded. They repeated this simple process all summer long.
Milkweed is key to monarch butterflies(黑麦金斑蝶). It’s the only plant on which they’ll lay their eggs and the only one that their caterpillars(幼虫) will eat. But in the past decades, urban development and overuse of weed killers have severely ruined this habitat. Today, the number of adult monarchs may be not enough to ensure that the species multiplies. “Monarchs connect many people to nature, and without these connections, people are less likely to be concerned enough about other species,” says Karen Oberhauser who serves as the researcher advisor.
This is why Harnsberger is studying how and where to plant milkweed to attract the greatest number of monarchs. “There’s been some modeling on which type would be better for the monarch but no real boots-on-the-ground research yet.” Harnsberger and her team have put their boots on the prairie where 30 sites have been divided into four types. Their data show that monarchs prefer fields with higher densities(密集) of milkweed and flowering plants. The size of the prairie, however, does not matter much.
Harnsberger points out that anyone can take small steps to help monarchs. Their population is quickly declining, so any action is better than none at all. “The number one thing the public can do for monarchs is to plant milkweed,” Harnsberger says. “As much as you can, wherever you can. The more plants, the better for monarchs.”
8、What can we say about the work in Paragraph 1?
    A. Laborious. B. Rewarding C. Dangerous. D. Creative.
9、Which of the following leads to the declining population of monarch butterflies?
    A. Little attention from the public. B. Great damage to the habitat.
    C. Low survival rate of caterpillars. D. Limited options for food.
10、What do the underlined words “have put their boots on” mean in the Paragraph 3?
    A. Find a problem. B. Think of a method.
    C. Do field research. D. Draw a conclusion.
11、What does Harnsberger’s advice in the last paragraph convey?
    A. Strike the iron while it’s hot. B. Easier said than done.
    C. Many a little make a mickle. D. More haste, less speed.
During the pandemic, working from home has become common, leaving many appreciating the freedom and flexibility of working remotely(远程地). However, while the traditional idea of an office—a place away from home—may have changed, the need for physical office space hasn’t. In fact, this period of working from home has stressed just how important it is to have a place of work, without which the work-life balance may be worsened.
With traditional offices unable to meet the changing needs of a pandemic-stricken workforce, and working from home showing other problems, a solution needs to be found in the office of the future.
Perhaps the most unique characteristics of the office of the future will be its hybrid solution. It could marry the advantages of physical workspace with the benefits of working from home. Many companies have already started to adopt this new hybrid model, allowing employee teams to create schedules for when they will be working from home, or even use an online system to book a meeting room in the company. This way, the company can manage the number of people in the office at one time, meaning spaces can be downsized to save costs.
With the office playing a key role in creating and communicating company culture, thoughts must be given to these issues when designing offices of the future. For example, aware that many employees will be adopting the hybrid working model, office designers should focus on more than the functional part of getting jobs done. Instead, the office should become a place where teams are encouraged to meet, work together and build strong bonds, which will reduce any concerns of loneliness at work. Floor plans should include meeting rooms and rest areas that promote social interaction on both professional and more personal levels.
Many businesses have already begun to adopt their physical spaces to adapt to the changing needs and expectations of workforces, suggesting we may not be far away from the next stage of the office.
12、What can we know about working offices from paragraph 1 and 2?
    A. They are at a turning point. B. They disturb work-life balance.
    C. They are in great demand. D. They stick to traditional designs.
13、What’s special about the hybrid model?
    A. The work schedule is very flexible.
    B. Employees can work at a distance they like.
    C. The number of people at home can be easily managed.
    D. The benefits of physical offices and remote work are combined.
14、Which aspect of the future office does the author focus on in paragraph 4?
    A. Providing working equipment. B. Promoting workers’ well-being.
    C. Reducing the company cost. D. Increasing working efficiency.
15、Which is the best title of the passage?
    A. Physical Office: Still needed?
    B. Future Office: A Possible Solution?
    C. Office Design Trend: Always in Change?
    D. The Office of the Future: Are We There Yet?

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

It could marry the advantages of physical workspace with the benefits of working from home.(也许未来办公室最独特的特点将是其混合解决方案。 Many businesses have already begun to adopt their physical spaces to adapt to the changing needs and expectations of workforces, suggesting we may not be far away from the next stage of the office.(许多企业已经开始采用他们的物理空间来适应劳动力不断变化的需求和期望,这表明我们可能离办公室的下一阶段不远了)可知,短文介绍的是将来人们将采取混合的办公模式。
No two libraries are the same. One could be a center of students doing projects, while another could be a center for the homeless and people seeking jobs.(没有两个图书馆是相同的。 It used to be an unwelcome place for children, but now it has become a hub(活动中心)for community activity.(它曾经是一个不受孩子欢迎的地方,但现在它已经成为一个社区活动的中心。)
When you arrive, there will be someone there to help you and your children set up library cards, sign up for programs, and show you where the books are.(当你到达时,会有人在那里帮助你和你的孩子设置图书卡,注册项目,并告诉你书在哪里。)
Jackson advises parents visiting the library when lots of activities are going on, as well as when it is quiet time(杰克逊建议家长在许多活动正在进行的时候以及图书馆安静的时候去图书馆。)
When there are a lot of activities, Jackson says some children can feel stressed.(杰克逊说,当有很多活动时,有些孩子会感到压力。)

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.
