Clean, bright and shining--snow is very beautiful. It inspires excitement for the holidays and hometowns for childhood. But these aren’t the only things that snow shows.
Snow is often a symbol of purity (纯洁) in English literature. Shakespeare uses snow as a metaphor (隐喻) for purity in many of his plays. Another is in the name of the famous fairy tale character, Snow White.
But Chinese people probably like snow more than people from any other country in the world. There are many Chinese cultures that are connected with snow. Snow has reminded people of white jade (玉) in China. People believe that, just like one of the country’s favorite treasures, snow also shows purity.
Chinese people especially like the first snow of each year. A heavy snow will give children a natural playground. It also covers the winter wheat with a thick quilt of snow that keeps it warm. In addition, snow in warm weather can moisturize the land. That’s why people say “Rui Xue Zhao Feng Nian”. It means that a heavy snow promises a fruitful year.
A lot of famous ancient Chinese masters loved painting snow, such as Fan Kuan (Northern Song dynasty), Guo Xi (Northern Song dynasty), Zhao Yong (Yuan dynasty) and so on.
In modem times, landscape (风景) painters further develop the skills of snow painting. They have made it an independent type of Chinese landscape painting. Chinese snow landscape paintings mainly show the heavy snow of the northern parts of China.
Artists like painting snow landscapes because snow is connected with their soul. They paint snow not to show the coldness of the snowy world. My name is Henry Adams. When I was 27, I worked in San Francisco. One Saturday afternoon, I sailed my little boat but a strong wind pushed my boat into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, I was saved by a British ship heading to London.
I had only one dollar when I arrived in London. I was tired and hungry. At that moment, the window of a nearby house opened and a man said to me, “Come in here, please.” I was taken to a beautiful room. There two old gentlemen were discussing something. ①

If he goes to the bank to change this big note, the police will think he stole it and arrest (逮捕) him.” The other brother answered, “No, I disagree.”
The two gentlemen decided to end their argument with a bet. ③ They chose me because I had an honest, clever face. Also, I was a stranger to England. One of them gave me an envelope and told me not to open it until I was in my hotel room.
④ After leaving the house, I opened the envelope and saw money inside of it! I rushed to the nearest restaurant. After eating, I tried to pay with the money but discovered that it was a bank note worth five million dollars! It made my head swim. No one could possibly cash (兑现金) it. The owner said, “You can pay for the meal whenever you want, sir. I understand that you are a rich gentleman. You like playing jokes on people by dressing like a poor man.”
