Henry Cavendish was born in Nice, France, on October 10, 1731, the oldest son of Lord Charles Cavendish and Lady Anne Grey, who died a few years after Henry was born. As a youth he attended Dr. Newcomb's Academy in Hackney, England. He entered Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1749, but left after three years without taking a degree.
Cavendish returned to London, England to live with his father. There, Cavendish built himself a laboratory and workshop. When his father died in 1783, Cavendish moved the laboratory to Clapham Common, where he also lived. He never married and was so reserved that there is little record of his having any social life except occasional meetings with scientific friends.
During his lifetime, Cavendish made striking discoveries in chemistry, mainly between1766 and 1788, and in electricity, between 1771 and 1788. In 1783, he published a study of the means of determining the freezing point of mercury(水银).In 1784, Cavendish determined the make-up of water, showing that it was a combination of oxygen and hydrogen. Cavendish's most celebrated investigation was that on the density(密度) of the earth.In1798, he published a single famous paper on the density of the earth.
Spending his whole life in the laboratory and library, Cavendish's life was quite simple. He died in London on February 24, 1810. But because he had a low regard for glory, he cared little about publishing his results and getting priority for discovery, and much of his work remained unpublished. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that some extremely valuable materials were found in his manuscripts(手稿), which proved that he had made a great contribution to the development of science.
4、What happened to Cavendish in 1752?

C. His marriage life. D.His teenage years.
7、What can be learned about Cavendish from the last paragraph?
A. He died when he was 89 years old. B. His contribution still remains unknown.
C. He had spent his life pursuing fame. D. His manuscripts are of great value.
Body language is used in nearly every aspect of daily life, and observing someone can sometimes tell you a lot about how a person is feeling and what is on their mind. For example, when playing cards, people try to limit their body language to prevent others from guessing what they might do. Without saying anything, body language can often get a person's point across.
In fact, body language is believed to make up about half of what we are trying to communicate. People can perform it consciously or subconsciously(潜意识地) to convey their thoughts and feelings towards countless things.
Body language can be used to improve our verbal communication skills. For instance, if someone is asking for directions in a store on where to find a product and an employee merely says "over there", this information is not entirely helpful to the customer because it is too vague(模糊的). So, if the employee said "over there" while pointing, it would be more helpful than the original situation with no body language at all.
Most people are unaware of their body language in some situations due to its being performed on a largely subconscious level. However, to others it is observable, and over time people might notice patterns. This is especially true for people who interact with each other regularly, such as between parents and their kids. For instance, if a boy lies to his mother about where he is going, he might exhibit distinct body languages that he normally would not do, such as avoiding eye contact or talking more rapidly.
Some other common situations where body language can occur are during periods of experiencing nervousness or attraction, and this can vary from person to person. For example, someone might cough when placed in a situation that makes them nervous, while another might touch their face.
8、What does the example in the first paragraph suggest about using body language?
A. It is advocated when people are playing cards.
B. It prevents misunderstanding among friends.
C. It can be controlled consciously in some cases.
D.It causes unnecessary distractions from games.
9、What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3?
A. Body language helps express ideas clearly.
B. Polite languages should be used in a store.
C. Shop assistants lack communication skills.
D. Shops are supposed to be properly laid out.
10、How is the text mainly developed?
A.By surveying. B.By experimenting.
C.By giving examples. D.By analyzing data.
11、What's the best title for the text?
A.How to Appear Powerful With Body Language
B. Body Language Varies From Culture to Culture
C.Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are
D. The Wide Use of Body Language in Communication
Edible(可食用的) cities are becoming increasingly popular around the world. In the city of Andernach, Germany, anyone who lives or happens to be in the town of 30,000 people is encouraged to pick and take whatever they want from the fruiting trees and bushes in the town center. The town, which sits in the Rhine River Valley, is among the growing number of edible cities across the globe. Since the start of the program in 2010, there is more than enough produce to go around every year regardless of whether someone grabs a single pear or a bag full of potatoes.
"People here are very proud when talking to others about our edible city," shared Bettina Schneider, city team coordinator(协调员)for the Edible Cities Network in Andernach. "The land that was changed into fruiting gardens and orchards(果园)in Andernach was previously overgrown. But today the town is covered with peach, almond and pear trees."
Andernach's public gardens and orchards have also inspired other cities in Germany and throughout the European Union to follow suit. Today, the Edible Cities Network—a group of about 150 cities worldwide with fruit trees and vegetable gardens in public places for anyone to access free of charge—is funded by the European Commission.
"Public green natural spaces in cities are incredibly valuable, and even more so as temperatures rise and cities become more crowded," said Ina Säumel, a principal investigator for the Edible Cities Network. She explained that Edible Cities Network's goal is to encourage people to get involved in their urban parks instead of only thinking of them as passive places.
Many cities in the United States have also started similar projects. There are public lands from Seattle to North Carolina where people are welcome to pick and take from fruiting trees and bushes.
12、What can people do in an edible city?
A.Grow fruit trees and potatoes anywhere.
B. Pick agricultural products on public land.
C.Go to any restaurant to enjoy food for free.
D. Make a fortune by selling apples and peaches.
13、What is Andernach residents' attitude toward their edible city?
A.Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
14、What is the goal of the Edible Cities Network?
A. To enable people to access fresh food.
B. To make the cities cleaner and nicer.
C. To stop people from living a busy life.
D. To involve people in their urban parks.
15、What is most likely to be discussed following the last paragraph?
A. Some edible cities in America. B. Predictions about edible cities.
C. Evaluations about edible cities. D. People's dependence on edible cities.

For my fourteenth birthday, my mom offered to take me and several friends to the city nearest our small town to visit a mall, go shopping, eat pizza and then watch a movie. All the friends I'd invited showed up except Nora. I felt confused and angry.
So, as soon as I returned to my house, I gave her a call. "It's my birthday! You're not coming, and you didn't even let me know. What kind of friend are you? How could you do this to me?"
Then Nora explained she had to stay at home because she had gotten sick. "OK, so you're sick... But how was I supposed to know if you didn't tell me?" I answered. It only grew worse from there, and Nora cried as we hung up the phone moments later. Immediately, her mother called back. Angrily, she told me how much I'd hurt her daughter, how much Nora had wanted to join us, and that she had been the one to change Nora's plan. Still thinking only of myself, I ended the call with Nora's mom and still felt angry.
At school on Monday, I found it easy to avoid Nora since she and I had no classes together. For the rest of the school year, we hardly spoke.
The next year I entered a senior high school, with twice as many students as my junior high school. I made some new friends and kept some old ones. But my friendship with Nora had been in the past.
Years later—just over twenty, to be specific—I discovered Facebook had suggested Nora as an online friend. We'd attended the same school and had many Facebook friends in common; it made sense. So, I reached out and sent the friend request. Nora accepted.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After several days of polite online communication, I began to reflect on that phone conversation with Nora years ago.

34、答案:
After several days of polite online communication, I began to reflect on that phone conversation with Nora years ago. I recognized how self-centered I'd been. There were no cell phones back then. I didn't even give her a chance to tell me when I got home, and I didn't think about how disappointed she must have been. Regardless of the fact that decades had passed since that telephone call, I wanted to make things right. I logged into Facebook and began composing an apology letter to Nora.
Immediately, she responded with a message of her heartfelt forgiveness. She told me how she'd missed me after that birthday celebration. She had thought I was "cool" and wanted to stay friends with me. I expressed my regret that the opportunity had been wasted because of that phone call and how I'd handled it. After that, Nora and I often shared with each other about our children, jobs or new recipes. We were happy to bring a sad moment from the past to a healthy conclusion.
