读后续写
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短 文。
My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I feared going into my room after school. Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room. Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. Still, I wouldn’t believe. Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate. Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her. As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet. I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me. A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands. I was surprised that they didn’t stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over. “Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile. I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet. “Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet. I found a strong smell of cheese from them. Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room? A voice raced across my mind. No way. Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror. I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

3.读后续写(需要使用划线词)
Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.
“The safety issue is a big one,” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer- “That’s not a problem here,” --Mahoney began to feel uneasy.
“No crime whatsoever?” comments Mahoney today. “I just don’t buy it. ” Nor should he: in 1999 the U.S. Department of education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to college,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation."
But getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges must report crime statistics by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be serious,” warms S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group.
To help concerned parents,

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My dad,George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man,he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14,he worked. And his dad,Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either:He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass(超过)anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball,or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather,I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired I up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way,the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs,lamb’s-quarters,foxtails,and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home,my dad said,“A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household. ” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Gramma Goodie visits her grandsons every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts the same. First she rings the doorbell. Then Chris jumps down the stairs.Jamie runs to open the door. And every time,Gramma Goodie has gifts. But the kids never know what she’ll bring.
Sometimes it’s something you need, like socks or underwear. Sometimes it’s movie tickets or a giant teddy bear.It could be a kite or a stuffed (填充的) baby kangaroo. It could be a lollipop (棒棒糖) that turns your tongue blue.
Well, one Sunday, Gramma rang the doorbell. Chris hurried down the stairs. And Jamie opened the door.
“Hello, my darlings,” Gramma Goodie said with a smile. “Look what I have for you.” She pulled out a pack of cards, and they played “Go fish” all afternoon. At the end of the day, Gramma gave the kids kisses. Then she said her good-byes.
As she drove away,Chris and Jamie heard their parents talking. They said that Gramma Goodie’s birthday was next Sunday. They were going to plan a special dinner and bake a delicious cake for her birthday surprise.
“Gramma Goodie has a birthday?” they thought. Both were a little puzzled.Grown-ups have birthdays? Who in the world knew?
“Well, we have to get her a gift,” Jamie said.
“But what?” asked Chris. “Gramma Goodie has almost EVERYTHING!”
Jamie thought about scarves and flowers. But Gramma had plenty of scarves and a huge rose garden. Chris thought about books, pillows and photo albums. A diary? She had one.An umbrella? She had that too. A radio? There is one in her kitchen. Oh, what would Chris and Jamie do? They spent all week thinking.
On Sunday, the doorbell rang.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This Old Chair
“Mom! I’m home!” John slammed the door and dropped his books on a nearby chair.
“Hi, John, home already?” His mom turned around, “Spring is coming, and I am doing our annual spring cleaning. Come and help me, okay?”
“Okay, okay,” John agreed reluctantly.
They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Wearily pointing to Pop-Pop’s chair, which was faded and worn, John’s mom exclaimed, “Oh my! That old chair has got to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take the chair to the curb (马路边缘). Tomorrow the garbage truck is picking up on our block.”
As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them since Grandma had died, worked his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly blocked their way. “Oh, no!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“It’s old. . . It’s worn. . . . ” John’s mom argued, a slight edge to her voice.
“No,” Pop-Pop persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
“But Pop, we’ll buy you a new one,” John’s mom tried to persuade the old man.
“I don’t want a new one,” Pop-Pop’s voice trembled.
“I give up.” John’s mom let go of the chair. “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.”Matt, John’s dad, was still at work. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Pop-Pop, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked when his mother left the room. “It’s so old.”
“You don’t understand, John.” Pop-Pop shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago, but when I sit in this chair and close my eyes I feel she is near.” The old man tenderly stroked the arm of the chair.
It’s amazing, John thought, how Pop-Pop can remember things from the past. In the present, he forgets almost everything. John sat down on the floor by Pop-Pop’s feet and listened as the old man went on.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband and I wandered the tropical gardens of San Diego’s Bahia Resort Hotel. We came to a large pool. A wet nose appeared out of the water and a seal(海豹)climbed up onto a rock to greet us. “Look!” I cried, delighted.
“Her name is Gracie,” my husband said, reading a sign by the fence that enclosed the pool. A moment later, another seal swam past. “And that must be Billy,” he added.
Gracie dove back into the water and chased after Billy. We watched in wonder as they raced around the pool happily.
The next day I found myself back at the seals’ pool. Gracie and Billy were enjoying the morning sunshine on a large rock. I was surprised to learn that Gracie and Billy were blind.
They were thought to have suffered a head injury in stormy Alaska waters, which caused them to lose their sight. They needed to be taught to survive in a world of darkness. I felt sorry for them, as they could no longer return to the sea.
At the same time, I was amazed how they had adapted to their new environment. They moved easily and beautifully, their lack of sight seeming to be no problem at all. I spent hours watching them playing happily in the pool, nosing large red and blue balls.
Three years later, in spring 2020, a serious illness damaged my eyes, making me almost blind. My eyes had to be protected from sunlight, so I couldn’t go outside. I sat in my bedroom with the shades drawn, unable to read or even watch television. I was terrified. What if I lost my sight completely? How would I possibly manage? I felt so depressed that I began to lose hope.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The two-hundred-metre breaststroke (蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke (仰泳) I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn’t help. My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water. Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think. Or maybe Coach Cafferty just want to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool,” I thought desperately. I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.
I hesitated. Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster. I lost rhythm on my strokes. I messed up my turns. I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times. I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks? But once I dragged myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated, Coach Cafferty thumbed up to me, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practice.
On the way back home, Morgan comforted me, “Dear, just ignore others. Race against yourself. Count your own strokes. Prove to yourself that you can do it.” With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed: both how I swam the breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came. I arrived at the pool hall, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine, my knees shook. I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. Morgan leaned forward. “Just swim your race. Remember, you can!”

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ken Scott kicked of the covers and leapt out of bed at his home in the Rocky Mountain town of Mullan,Idaho. It was 6 a.m.on January 7, 2020, and he was on a mission: He’d just heard on the radio that the nearby Silver Mountain Resort had been blessed with nearly a foot and a half of new snow. As a ski addict who’d worked in the industry for the past 30 years as a ski patroller (滑雪巡逻员)and equipment salesperson, he didn’t want to miss this perfect skiing chance. These conditions are what skiers live for-even experienced and skilled as Scott, who, at 55, still skied 100 days a year.
When Scott reached Silver Mountain’s locker room, he ran into his friend Warren, 58, a former ski instructor who had also been a regular on these slopes for more than two decades.
“Can you believe it?” he said as they changed into their boots. “Sixteen inches! Are you ready?”
For the next hour, the pair skied on various runs under a lightly gloomy sky, making fresh tracks. They were both in a playful mood. Finally, they reached 16-to-1, an expert-level trail, which was now open. It had been closed all season over concerns that skiers might cause an avalanche (雪崩). But that morning, patrollers had cleared loose snow on the peak, reducing the chance of a snowslide.
“What do you think?” asked Warren.
“Let’s go for it!” Scott replied.
When they reached the top of 16-to-1, Warren excitedly looked back at Scott. The huge, toothy grin on his bearded face was what he needed. He pointed his skis downhill and took off. So thrilled were they that they isolated everything around them. Flying on the trail, despite the biting wind, their hearts burnt with passion for this great skiing. Whoomph! A sudden roar from behind nearly deafened them.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband Erik and I had promised the kids a Labrador puppy.
I’d seen the ad at the local hardware store. “Thirteen puppies in all, “Sally, the owner, said when I called. ”There’ re only three left. “I decided to take a look the next day. The boys jumped and shouted excitedly as I copied down directions and hung up the phone.
Early the next morning, still discussing names, we wound our way through the mountains to meet our family’s new best friend. Our boys had simple names: Ike, Sam, Ben, and Dom, so they Preferred simple names like Rosy ,too. Finally, we met the sweet little dog. ” Rosy, “the boys called it softly. Our little puppy cocked her head. ” She likes it,“they cheered and set about making Rosy comfortable for the long drive home. They offered her a chew toy and lifted her up so she could see out the window. They took turns holding her in their arms lovingly and offered her a snack.
Though small, Rosy grew strong and healthy beneath her shiny black coat. And, just as I’d hoped, she was a calming addition to our houseful of noisy boys. But something was wrong. “It’s like she doesn’t know how to play,” Sam commented one day after school. “Dogs have different personalities, just like people,”I said. “Besides, she’s still very young. ” “But her legs aren’t very long, and one eye is smaller than the other,”Ike added, trying to make sense of why Rosy was different from other puppies he’d met.
I looked across the room to where Rosy sat between the boys. The last golden rays of autumn sunshine shone brightly on her face. Sure enough, one eye was misshapen. Not only that, it didn’t glint (闪光) in the afternoon light. I drew in a breath. Rosy, our puppy with a name as short as her four little legs, was blind in one eye.

参考答案:
1.Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness. I increased my plant watering, and then decreased it. Still, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. The thought that I couldn’t even care for a simple plant started to haunt me like a shadow. For the past few months, a bond had been built between me and the plant. I couldn’t shake the feeling that if the plant died, I might too. Having seen through my heart and sensed my fear, my wife comforted me, “Honey, your treatment is working well and maybe the plant just needs its.” Her words did make sense and settled my nerves.
As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving its roots more room to grow and buried some solid plant nutrient under the top layer of the earth. Soon, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the tree with its shinny and lush leaves in its new pot, I make it a point to appreciate my wife and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will inspire my wife to live her life to the fullest.

Seeing the tears in her eyes, I bent down and lifted her up gently. “It’s OK. Callie, no matter what you do, I will love you forever. You are such a good girl, for it is you creative imaginations that give me surprises everyday. Thank you!” I kissed her on her face, ruffling her long thick hair. 3.To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions. It’s important to have a clear set of criteria in mind. As Joe Mahoney noted, parents should also make sure to voice their concerns about campus safety and ask for specific information from college officials. It’s also worth acknowledging that campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation. Unfortunately, crime is a reality in many parts of our society, and college campuses are no exception. Finally, it’s important to recognize that some colleges may hold back crime statistics for fear of bad publicity. This is a concerning trend that undermines the safety of both current and prospective students. As such, parents and students should support organizations like Security on Campus, Inc. that advocate for transparency and improved safety measures.

On Sunday, the doorbell rang. Chris and Jamie didn’t go downstairs as usual, for they had been thinking about what they could send to Grandma to give her a surprise. Entering the house, Grandma asked “What happened to you both? Did anything go wrong?” “Nothing at all” they answered and forced a smile to comfort her. After dinner, Grandma Goodie was ready to go home. The kids gave a gift to their Grandma.
“What’s this?” asked Gramma Goodie. “It’s your birthday gift”, they said happily. At the same time, they asked Grandma to open it quickly. She took the delicate package, then some photos appeared, which were taken during their yearly vacation. Behind each photo place, time and their feelings were written down. Looking at these photos, Gramma Goodie recalled the happy time they had spent together, and couldn’t help tearing. “Why are you crying?” Jamie asked. “You give me a big surprise, and I am so touched.” she said, giving them kisses on their cheeks.

6. That night, however, John’s parents carried the chair out to the curb. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Pop-Pop’s chair with a blanket of white. The next morning, when John came downstairs, Pop-Pop stood by the window and looked outside. A tear rolled down his hollow cheek. John followed the old man’s gaze and froze. Snow-covered, the chair stood at the curb out on the street. The clamor of the garbage truck pulling up to the house shocked John into action. He ran outside. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted, flailing both arms in the air.
After rescuing the chair from the garbage men, John rushed to find his mom. “You can’t throw out his chair, Mom.” John swallowed hard before going on. “This is not just a chair. It has been with Pop-Pop for a very long time and is like a friend.” John’s mom turned and walked slowly towards Pop-Pop. “I’m sorry, Pop-Pop,” she said. “I guess I just didn’t realize how much the chair meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back inside.” They brushed off the snow with their hands and placed the chair next to the fireplace so it could dry. The living room became warm and bright again with this old chair.

Then I remembered something that gave me the hope I needed. Yes, I thought of the two seals. They got used to their new life in the pool regardless of the great changes when they were unable to go back to the sea where they were supposed to be. What’s more, they managed to enjoy a happy life though they lived in darkness as a result of their blindness. Now I was faced with the same situation. Luckily, the two seals had set a good example for me.
So I made up my mind to live like those two seals. Though I was kept from the outside world, I did find pleasure in my small world, enjoying chatting with friends, singing with my family, listening to music, and eating delicious food. The seals’ diving and swimming around their pool reminded me of exercise. So I climbed up and down the stairs every morning to keep fit. Eventually I became confident again about myself. Thanks to my two inspiring friends, I learned how to enjoy life when going through a difficult time.

Struggling out of the snowbank, he looked around, trying to find Ken. “KEN!” Warren shouted anxiously, but no reply. Warren knew he had to reach Scott quickly because of the 30-minute survival window. He pulled out his phone and called for help.
“Bring help! Ken was missing,” Warren said anxiously on the phone. Word spread quickly, and soon Silver Mountain’s patrols and skiers arrived at the avalanche site with shovels and ten-foot poles with which they could probe for Scott. Rescuers formed a horizontal line along the slope, each standing just two feet apart, and inserted their probes down into the deep, chunky snow, hoping to hit and locate the buried skier. Twenty minutes into the search, a rescuer shouted, “A strike!” Tears streaming down his face, Warren knew they opened the life window for Scott.

Having hesitated for a little while, finally, I made a difficult decision. I walked to them, petted the dog, and then suggested giving it back and taking another healthy and lively little puppy.
Surprisingly, the boys refused to give the little puppy back. Sam held Rosy tightly in his arms and rubbed its fur. “Mommy, it’s not fair for the little dog. We should do something. We should love and care for her together. ” Ike looked straight into my eyes, begging to keep Rosy eagerly. The other boys joined immediately. It was then that I realized I had misunderstood them.
