Matt is ten years old and always nervous about something. At night, he lies in bed with the blanket tightly up around his chin. That’s why his mother left the light on in the hallway. He is also very unhappy. He notices adults on their way to work. He even worries about how hard they have to work. He sees ladies holding umbrellas. He thinks a hurricane or a terrible rainstorm might come.
Matt always thinks the worst. He even walks behind other children on their way to school. Some play friendly tricks on each other. Not Matt. He has very few friends. So he’s pretty much alone.
That day was very special for Matt. He didn’t realize that his grandfather was watching him. He watched Matt eat by himself on one of the benches in the schoolyard.
It was right near one of Matt’s favorite squirrels (松鼠). He watched as Matt talked to the squirrel which raced toward him and then jumped upon the bench to take the peanut treat. Grandfather saw this and was glad.
Over the next few days Grandfather was able to observe the kindness not only for experience animals but for people as well. When Sally fell off her bike and cut herself, Matt stayed with her until she was fixed up by her mother.
Most of the neighborhood children took part in a Saturday baseball game with their parents. Matt was watching a few children play ball at Victoria Park. They all hit the ball and ran to first base successfully.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
    Paragraph1:
    Slowly,Peter raised his hand.

It was the last practice before the big gymnastics competition in Burlingville. The gymnastics team of Springtown High School had been training every day in the school vacation. They tried harder and wanted to do better. They had competed with the team from Maidstone High School several times. The competitions allowed the two teams to admire each other for their excellent performance and players’ qualities. They respected the game; they respected each other’s team more.
Today, the players of Springtown went home earlier. They would pack some food and water to have along the way to Burlingville. Before they went home, they went to their teacher to see their new uniform. Springton High School was in the countryside. The team made cookies and sold them at the market to get money to buy the uniform. They loved it very much, even though they were impressed with the uniforms of the team from Maidstone. Maidstone High School was a rich private school. It usually prepared two sets of uniforms for the competition — one for the morning and the other for the afternoon.
Early the next morning, the team of Springtown High School and their teacher got on a minibus to start their long trip. They would reach the railway station in Travers at about two o’clock and then take a train to Burlingville. They must be there by six o’clock and register for the competition.
The bus driver drove the bus through the country roads. Then suddenly, he parked the bus at the side of the road. There was something wrong with the engine. Unluckily, the driver couldn’t fix it in a short time. He called the company and asked them to send another bus for the gymnastics team. It was 90 minutes before another minibus came. Everyone jumped onto the bus. “Please hurry,” said the teacher.
When they finally arrived at Travers railway station, the bus driver helped the team carry the bags into the station. As soon as they got on the train, it started to move. Looking out of the window, the teacher saw the bus driver running towards the train door.

Many years ago, I was at a girls’ school and our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every day.
On one of the days, my teacher paired Madhuri, who I had never talked to, and me to sit next to each other. I noticed that she seemed very anxious. I asked her what was wrong. She remained silent at first, but eventually, she told me that she had three sisters in her family and that her father couldn’t afford school books for all of them.
My primary school was strict, as was the standard then, and if you didn’t have your school books the teacher would make you leave the class. Madhuri was very anxious that day because she thought that the teacher would tell her to leave the class. When the teacher saw that she didn’t have the books, he told Madhuri that she couldn’t attend class for a week.
Madhuri was very upset. I felt so bad when I saw her pain that I decided to help her. I went to speak to her and offered to buy the books for her. She refused my offer to help. She had very strong principles and she would never accept things bought by others.
When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. I couldn’t stop worrying about it though.

Once upon a time, there lived a young man who was always worrying about things, and could never be truly happy with his life. Once one problem went away, he found another.
One day, he told his friend his problems. His friend said, “There is a wise man whom you can visit. Perhaps he’ll have answers to all your problems. ”
So the young man hurried to the place where the wise man was staying. After waiting for a while, he was invited to talk to him. “I’m unhappy all the time, ” he told the wise man. “I have problems at home, problems with work and problems with my health. Please show me how I can deal with all my problems and live a happy life. ”
The wise man smiled and said, “Young man, I’ll tell you how to solve your problems tomorrow morning. But first, can you offer me some help?” The young man was surprised, but he said that he could. “I’ve brought a hundred camels with me, ” said the wise man, “I’d like you to take care of them tonight. When each of them sits down, you can go to sleep!”
Then the wise man went away, leaving the confused young man to go and look after the camels. All night, the young man tried to get all the camels to sit down. But there were always some that were standing up.
Early the next morning, he found the wise man sitting outside his tent, drinking tea. “Young man, did you sleep last night?” the wise man asked.
“I didn’t sleep at all, ” the young man replied, with a yawn (打哈欠). “I tried and tried, but I couldn’t get all the camels to sit down at the same time. As soon as one group sat down, another stood up. ”

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018.
He was hiking behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US-Mexico border, when he found a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards it with his dog, thinking he would pick up something useless and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon was connected to a piece of paper. ‘Dayami’, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Turning the paper over, he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t very good, but I could see it was a Christmas,” he said.
Heiss was attracted. He thought that maybe a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the kid who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but he believed he could work it out. About 32 kilometers to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. “Based on the prevailing wind (盛行风), I was pretty sure that’s where it came from,” he said.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is good at Spanish and helped him translate the list. The elderly couple figured out that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and some art supplies.
Heiss then posted on social media along with some photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no useful information provided; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a message to Radio XENY, a radio station based in Nogales.

David worked as the cleaner in the same school for 25 years, and he considered his job an important part of his life. Besides keeping the school clean, he was always ready to help teachers carry books from the library to the classroom. Anyone who needed help in school knew they could count on David.
Decades ago, his wife suddenly passed away soon after their marriage, and since then, David had been living alone.
After returning home from work, David often read cooking magazines because of his passion for baking (烘焙). He would bring freshly baked cookies and bread to school every week and serve them to the teachers.
“Wow! They’re so delicious, David!” Samantha, the English teacher, told him. She was one of the teachers that enjoyed David’s love and praised his efforts.
David felt he was losing his strength as he turned old. He’d turn 75 in a week. He thought he should retire (退休). He told Samantha and other teachers what he had been thinking, “I’m planning to retire. I think there must be someone else who might need this job to make a living.”
“Oh! David! We’ll miss you if that happens,” the teachers cried. “We don’t want you to leave!” David smiled and told them, “You know I don’t have a wife to look after or kids to raise, so money isn’t what has kept me going all these years. Your care and praise have encouraged me to work hard.”
The next day, David went into the headmaster’s (校长的) office and told him about his decision. “Are you sure, David? You’re an excellent member of our school, and letting you go isn’t easy for us,” the headmaster said. “Thank you, Sir,” David said. “But I feel I’m getting weaker, and it’s become difficult for me to keep the school clean. So my decision is final.” The headmaster agreed eventually.

    A Writing Task
The summer vacation was over, so Tim and his classmates came back to school happily.
On the first day of school, Mrs Green, Tim’s English teacher, gave the class a writing task. “Boys and girls, today’s homework is to write something in some way that is related to your summer vacation, ”she said. “Be as creative as you can. But” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar. ”
That night, Tim sat at his desk and decided to go about this writing homework. He stared at the blank sheet paper for quite a few minutes, thinking what to write about. To tell the truth, this time, he didn’t want to write about his summer vacation as usual. What could he write about, except a dog, a water park, a visit to his grandma with his father, two weeks of camp, and …?Boring … He’d actually been happy to get back to school. But he made up his mind to write what he really wanted. It was not an essay(短文) at all but a short story, a science fiction(科幻小说). It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer — it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacation either. The aliens(外星人) on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had vacations one day.

Once upon a time, in a village, a little boy named Bob lived with his mother in their attractive little cottage. They didn’t have much but were content with the little they had. Every day after he came home from school, Bob would accompany his mother to the forest to collect firewood.
One day, when Bob was in the forest collecting wood, he came across a puppy which seemed to be all alone. Bob looked here and there for its owner but in vain. So he picked it up, put it under his shirt and carried it home. Reaching home, he said to her mother, “Mom, I found a little puppy alone in the forest! Can we keep him, please?“ Feeling Bob’s happiness, his mother was in two minds about whether to keep the puppy or not. She told him, ”Oh Bob, that’s the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen! But we don’t have much. What will we do about his food and sleeping arrangement?“ Bob replied, “It’s OK. I’ll give him half of my meals and let him sleep with me in my bed.” Hearing this, Bob’s mother just nodded. Bob’s happiness knew no bounds, and he named the puppy Milo.
From that day onwards, Bob and Milo became the best friends. Milo followed Bob wherever he went. When Bob went to school, Milo would diligently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. At night, Milo slept next to Bob on his tiny bed and dreamed sweet dreams.
On one particular day, Milo was sick, unable to follow Bob, so he stayed at home. That day it rained heavily, and the roads everywhere turned slippery. On his way home, Bob was trying to reach home as soon as possible as he dreamed of Milo waiting for him and keeping him warm. Unfortunately, Bob missed seeing a hole at the side of the road and fell down the hole!

A new student was transferred (转学) to Jackson’s class yesterday. Jackson sat at his school desk and looked over at the new kid, whose name was Billy. He just moved here from Florida. It was his second day in class and, so far, Jackson had not talked to him. Today, Jackson was going to try to make a new friend at recess (课间休息).
When the bell rang for recess, Jackson hurried out of his seat and followed Billy outside.
“Hi Billy,” Jackson said as they walked outside. “Do you want to play basketball?”
“No. I’m not very good at basketball.”
“Do you want to play kickball?” Jackson asked.
“No. I’m not good at that either,” Billy said. Billy walked away from Jackson and sat on a big flat rock in the grassy part of the schoolyard.
Jackson stood there and wondered what to do next. He asked Billy to do two things but both times Billy said no. Maybe he didn’t like Jackson. Maybe he didn’t want to make friends. Jackson thought about playing basketball with some other kids. He looked over at Billy sitting on the rock all by himself. “It must be hard to move to a new school,” Jackson thought. So he decided to give it one more try.
Jackson remembered the cars in his pocket. “Do you like cars?” Jackson asked Billy as he walked up to him. “Sure!” Billy said with a smile. Jackson finally knew what the kid was interested in. He reached into his pocket and took out two cars. “My brother gave me these. He has tons of cars and always gives me his old ones.” He handed one of the cars to Billy. It was a Mustang, Jackson’s favorite car, and he always took it with him.

    1. He was afraid of making a mistake. He was old enough and big enough but he was too afraid to try. He thought he would never be able to hit the ball. Then he would let everyone down, and they would laugh at him. And if he hit the ball, he would be too slow to run to first base, or he might miss the ball when it was thrown to him.
Grandfather knew this and wanted to help Matt. Holding a ball, Grandfather strolled over to Matt and yelled, “Hey, Matt.” Matt jumped up with great surprise. “Grandpa!” he shouted. “I want to play baseball. Will you do me a favor to play with me?” Grandfather asked. Matt hesitated, head down. “Sorry, I can’t. I play…” “Come on, boy! 4.Then I had an idea. My older brother, who had once used the same series of books, graduated from school last year. Why not turn to him for help? Maybe those old books were the solution to the problem. They wouldn’t cost anything so Madhuri could accept without any pressure. I went to mom and my brother immediately. After hearing Madhuri’s situation and my plan, my brother was quite willing to help. We sorted out the needed books for Madhuri together very quickly. Looking at the neatly piled books, I felt quite satisfied and delighted but suddenly a concern flashed across my mind, “Would Madhuri mind they are second-hand books?”
The next day, I got up early so that I could go to her house before going to school. Not knowing what would happen and not sure whether she would accept the books or not, I knocked at the door nervously. When the door opened, I could see her surprised expression. Hearing that these books were old books of my brother, she accepted them without hesitation. I also got a weight off my mind. On the way to school, I could see from her face how happy she was. From that day on, something changed and as the day passed and the years moved on, Madhuri and I became best friends.

“So,” said the wise man, “what you need to understand is that our problems are just like the camels. Some solve themselves at once. Some will be solved with your hard work. And some cannot be solved, no matter how hard you try, but give them time, and they will solve themselves, too.” The wise man continued, “As soon as you solve one problem, another one will come along. The aliens he had imagined might be unrealistic, but the lesson they taught him was not. He realized that there are always people who work hard and hope to have a better life, just like the aliens he created. He felt a sense of relief that he had written down his thoughts, and decided to keep writing stories in his own way.
