Four Famous Castles In Britain
The country is abundant of castles, some ruined, and others still surviving today. They are a reminder of their either glorious or violent past. Read on for the one that interests you most.
Bodiam Castle, East Sussex
Built primarily for defence in the 14th century, the castle looks perfectly protected from the outside. You might think you could expect much of the same inside it, but sadly not. The war reduced the inside to ruins. The fairytale appearance of the castle standing within its broad moat (护城河) makes an indescribably spectacular picture.
Hever Castle, Kent
As a queen's childhood home, it is the perfect picture-book castle. Its thick creeper-covered walls are surrounded by double channels. With large collections including portraits, paintings, furniture and treasures, it attracts a lot of tourists here. Among its collections are two private books signed by the queen herself, which are historically valuable.
Windsor Castle, Berkshire
If you want to have a better understanding of more than 900 years' royal (王室的) life, then there really is no better place to visit than this splendid castle. It is the largest and oldest castle that is still occupied now in the world. In 1992, a fire swept through the castle, destroying 115 rooms. The repairing was completed five years later.
Tintagel Castle, Cornwall
Few places can compete with Tintagel Castle in romance and mystery. The ruins that you see today date from the 13th century, which, however, didn't stop it to become a popular attraction. Due to the legend of King Arthur, for centuries the castle has fired writers' and artists’ imaginations on how the heroic king's life began here.
21. What do Bodiam Castle and Hever Castle have in common?
A. They are surrounded by water. B. They own many art collections.
C. They were built for defence. D. They are still lying in ruins
22. In which castle are there people living now?
A. Bodiam Castle, East Sussex. B. Hever Castle, Kent.
C. Windsor Castle, Berkshire. D. Tintagel Castle, Cornwall.
23. What is Tintagel Castle well-known for?
A. The childhood of a queen. B. The legend of a great king.

Brody Ridder attends The Academy of Charter Schools in Westminster, Colorado. When he got his yearbook(学校年刊),he went up to people and asked them to sign his yearbook but most of them refused. He collected only two or three names from classmates and two notes from his teachers. So, Brody wrote a yearbook note to himself, “Hope you make some more friends.”
Reading that note broke his mother’s heart. She took a photo of the note and posted it to a Facebook group for parents at the school. The post made its way to three high schoolers: Simone Lightfoot, Logan South and Joanna Cooper. They spent hours discussing the problem and finding ways to help. “It’s so fun to have everyone sign the yearbook, but for this kid few people have signed their names in his yearbook. It’s just heartbreaking,” Lightfoot said. They all started planning that the next day they were going to sign this kid’s yearbook.
The three rounded up as many students as possible to sign Brody’s yearbook even though none of them had ever met the three high schoolers. According to the teens, people were lining up to fill the blanks in Brody’s book. Many of the more than 100 signatures included paragraphs with words of encouragement, advice and even phone numbers. And then right after that, everyone in the class started signing Brody’s yearbook.
The teens said they hope the small friendly act can encourage other kids to be kind. “It makes me feel better now. I don’t know how to explain it. It makes me feel better from the bottom of my heart,” Brody said. “It makes me feel like there’s hope for the school, there’s hope for humanity and there’re a lot of good kids in this world,” his mother said.
24. Why did Brody write “Hope you make some more friends.” in his yearbook?
A. He hoped to know more about newcomers.

A. From their teachers. B. From the Internet.
C. From the newspaper. D. From their classmates.

A. People lined up to give yearbooks to Brody.
B. Almost 100 people signed Brody’s yearbook.

27. Which word can best describe the three schoolers?

At a large forest park in eastern Beijing, 11 birds on the state -level protection list were recently released, which owed to Beijing’s big step in wildlife protection.
These birds had recovered after the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued and took care of them. “We will speed up our efforts to push the establishment of district-level wildlife rescue centers to guard the health of wildlife,” said Mr. Du, director of the center. The center was set up in 2001 and built a wildlife rescue base in the capital’s Shunyi District in 2005. Staff at the base have rescued and rehabilitated over 30,000 wild animals in total.
Wildlife protection has been strengthened in Beijing in recent years. On June 1, the city’s newly adopted regulation (法规) on wildlife protection took effect, introducing stricter and more concrete measures to protect the environment and wildlife. For example, the regulation states clearly that Beijing bans hunting throughout the year, compared with the previous regulation which bans hunting during the periods of March to May and September to November each year. The new regulation also gives more serious punishment for illegal hunters.
After years of monitoring, the species and quantity of wild animals in Beijing are continuously increasing, with the number of terrestrial spinal wild animals (陆地脊椎野生动物) growing from 461 species in 1994 to more than 500. The habitat of the endangered bird has expanded from Fangshan District to the whole city.
“The enforcement of the new regulation marked a new stage in Beijing’s wildlife protection work,” said Mr. Du. “We will step up the publicity of the regulation and raise citizens’ awareness of wildlife protection,” Du said. “In our protection of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands. we take into full consideration the requirements of ecological corridor construction (生态走廊建设), food-chain construction and wildlife and their habitat protection.”

C. Beijing’s Big Progress in Wildlife Protection with New Regulation
D. The Establishment of Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

One of the most deeply-rooted myths in parenting is the so-called Mozart effect, which says that listening to music by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart can increase a child’s intelligence. The idea has been promoted by advocates for arts education and by retailers(零售商)who sell special recordings of Mozart’s works for infants(婴儿) and toddlers(学步的儿童). Some pregnant women have even gone so far as to play Mozart recordings on headphones pressed against their bellies.
So,if you have kids or you’re expecting to have them, how seriously should you take the Mozart effect? Will the child who has no access to Mozart’s music when born live a life of mediocrity(平庸)? Relax. There is no scientific evidence that listening to Mozart improve children’s cognitive abilities.
The whole idea came from a small study done in 1993, which found that college students who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K 448) showed slight improvement in a test of spatial reasoning(空间推理). This finding was later turned into something unrealistic by the musician and entrepreneur(企业家) Don Campbell, who in 1997published the best seller The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit. Campbell’s claims about the amazing power of Mozart’s music was repeated endlessly in the media and sped up the enthusiasm for Mozart-based enrichment activities.
Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mozart boosts intelligence and found no evidence for it. The original experiment with college students was reviewed in 1999, and the increase in the students’ spatial skills was found to be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research commissioned a team of experts to examine the scientific literature regarding Mozart and child development, and they found no reason to believe that it boosted intelligence.
32. Who might be in favor of Mozart effect?
A. People who are opposed to arts education.
B. Musicians who admire Mozart very much.
C. Businessmen who sell toys and infant food.
D. Pregnant women who want to make their children cleverer.
33. What sped up people’s behavior of listening to Mozart’s music?
A. People have benefited a lot from listening to Mozart’s music.
B. Don Campbell successfully sold Mozart’s music recordings.
C. The media repeatedly stressed the amazing power of Mozart’s music.
D. A small study showed Mozart’s music could make students much smarter.
34. What does the underlined word “negligible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. obvious. B. little. C. strong. D. sudden.
35. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the Mozart effect.
B. To correct a misunderstanding in parenting.
C. To stress the importance of listening to music.
D. To show parents how to make children smarter.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Christmas was approaching, and I had no idea what to get for my wife. We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending an important meeting, so I had the rest of the week to figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house partner while Donna was away was her cat, Princess, who was everything that her name implied. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors. Princess had other ideas, and slipped out of the house as I was bringing in some food. By the time I had turned around and gone back out of the door to look for her, she was gone.
Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess as soon as possible. So, I made up a poster of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. Perhaps because my poster were not so clear, soon people in the area came to my house with several homeless cats. Though Princess wasn’t among them, I let them stay in our yard. I figured Donna would understand.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. Finally, the day came for my wife to return.

Donna was understanding and supportive, but she couldn't help feeling sad about Princess. We spent the next few days trying to find Princess. We put up posters around the neighborhood and asked our neighbors if they had seen her. But there was no sign of her. At the same time, I told her about the homeless cats in our yard.
Paragraph 2:
When Donna saw the homeless cats in the yard, her eyes just filled with tears. One day, as we were sitting in the yard, we heard a familiar meowing. We looked around and saw Princess walking towards us. We were overjoyed to see her and couldn't believe that she had found her way back to us. From that day on, Princess never left our side. We were grateful for the experience of taking care of the homeless cats, but we were even more grateful to have our beloved Princess back home with us.
