Nowadays, over 6,000 national parks exist in the world. Of all, these are the ones that have been around for hundreds of years and should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Guilin and Lijiang River National Park, China
It is surrounded by striking natural beauty and can be explored by land. But the river national park, as the name suggests, is best explored through leisurely boat rides and cruises that take visitors through many canals and ancient towns that come along the way of the river.
Calanques National Park, France
While most go to France for the twinkling Eiffel Tower, few tour plans involve a stop at the Calanques National Park, which is made up of both land and sea, with over 140 protected species of animals and plants that reside inside. Because of its topography, the park is unique in that it can be explored through a mix of activities both for those who like waterbodies and those who’d rather stay on land.
Yorkshire Dales, United Kingdom
Contrary to the popular association of national parks with the wilderness it is filled with winding valleys, hills and villages where over 24,000 people live and work. Yorkshire Dales is also home to several food shops, and the park hosts cheese festivals and farmers markets regularly, so it’s best to go hungry.
Kakadu National Park Australia
It is a delight for those who like a bit of history mixed with the biodiversity of national parks. While it houses thousands of species of wildlife, there’s more to the national park than that.
21.What is recommended for a trip to Guilin and Lijiang River National Park?
A.Observing local customs. B.Exploring it through boats.
C.Witnessing geological process. D.Going with an empty stomach.

23.What do the four national parks have in common?
A.They have a long history. B.There are residents inside.

On February 20, the science fiction magazine Clarkesworld was forced to stop accepting any new articles from writers after it was flooded with AI-written stories.
“By the time we closed on the 20th, we had received 500 human-written stories and 700 AI-written ones,” said editor-in-chief Neil Clarke. “It was increasing at such a speed that we figured that by the end of the month, we would have doubled the number of articles we normally have. The rate had been growing from previous months, and we were concerned that we had to do something to stop it.”
Worries about AI misuse have frequently appeared in headlines recently, particularly since the launch of ChatGPT in November, 2022, which can not only answer a broad range of questions, but also create original poems and stories.
Clarke said magazines like his, which pay contributors for their work, were being targeted by people trying to make quick money. He said he had already spoken to editors of other magazines and that all of them had agreed to stop accepting AI-written articles. He also admitted that the humor of his sci-fi magazine being targeted by AI robots is not lost on him.
“You know, our mascot (吉祥物) is a robot. So we see the irony,” he said. “But the thing is that science fiction is often intended to give a warning to people. We don’t celebrate technology just because it exists. We want to make sure that we’re using it right. And there are some significant legal and moral issues around this technology that we’re not ready to accept.
Clarke said the magazine didn’t know how to deal with the issue, and part of the motivation to speak out was in the hope of finding some solutions. He also said the quality of the AI-written stories was very poor.
24.What’s the matter with the magazine Clarkesworld?
A.It will close down forever. B.It was targeted by AI writers.
C.It stopped paying contributors. D.It has lost many good authors.
25.What can we infer about other magazines’ attitude to the AI-written stories?
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Unknown. D.Tolerant.
26.What does Neil Clarke say about science fiction?
A.It often intends to find some solutions.
B.It welcomes the existing new technologies.
C.It will accept AI-written stories in the near future.
D.It often tries to warn the dark side of technologies.
27.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A notice. B.A science fiction. C.A news report. D.A book review.

A small group of paleontologists (古生物学家) recently discovered 10 species of ancient mammals previously unknown to science with the help of an enormous number of helpers at their dig site: ants.
The study of ancient mammals sheds new light on the diversity of mammals that existed in North America around 33 million to 35 million years ago, when the climate was changing drastically. It also pays attention to the harvester ants, with which researchers have long had a love-hate relationship. “The ants are not fantastic when they’re biting you,” said Samantha Hopkins, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. “But I’ve got to appreciate them because they make my job a whole lot easier.”
Most species of harvester ants live in subterranean caves that sit beneath a small hill of dirt. They strengthen the dirt by covering it with bits of rock and other tough materials. The ants have been known to travel over a hundred feet from their caves and to dig six feet deep in pursuit of materials that help secure their caves. The materials include fossils. Harvester ants can carry materials 10 times to 50 times the weight of their body, although they do not weigh very much, so the heaviest fossil they can collect weighs less than the average pill.
Given the size, harvester ant hills are hot spots for what scientists call microvertebrate (微型脊椎动物) fossils, which are animal fossils too small to see without a microscope. For over a century, scientists like Dr. Hopkins have found sediment (沉积物) off the sides of harvester ant hills in search of these fossils, making it easier to find large numbers of fossilized mammal teeth without spending hours in the field sifting through sand and dirt.
28.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To compare two different species.
B.To provide evidence for discoveries.
C.To introduce a kind of ant as a helper.
D.To promote awareness of mammal protection.
29.Which aspect may influence the diversity of mammals in the past?
A.Climate change. B.Ant numbers.
C.Cave materials. D.Dirt locations.
30.What does the underlined word “subterranean” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Coastal. B.Suburban. C.Mountainous. D.Underground.
31.What can we learn about the harvester ants from the last two paragraphs?
A.Their caves are miles deep. B.Materials with fossils are their food.
C.They can carry pills around. D.Fossils may be found around their hills.
D
If you’ve never heard of a biophilic city before. You probably will soon-there’s a growing movement emerging all over the world.
A biophilic city is a city where the planning and design largely integrate the natural world into the daily lives of residents. It’s based on the idea that humans have a deep love for and the necessity to connect with nature.
“We describe the vision of biophilic cities as immersive nature-nature is not just something to be found in a park here and there that you have to walk to, but rather we need to reimagine the city as a park, or as a forest,” says Tim Bratley, a professor of sustainable communities. “There is a renewed appreciation for how essential nature is in cities and how it can help to make them more beautiful places.” Beatley says. “We know, for instance, that cities face great pressures from climate change-a key response must be nature and nature-based solutions, such as cooling critics with trees and urban forests.”
Beatley’s colleague, Peter Newman, a distinguished professor of sustainability, says he has devoted nearly 50 years to activism, research and teaching how to make cities more sustainable. He made a film with Beatley called “Singapore: Biophilic City”.
Singapore is seen as an exceptional biophilic city. “In our film we show how biophilic values began with the first Prime Minister of Singapore saying that the environment in the city was as important as the economy.” says Newman, who got the idea of making the film after he spent some time in Singapore teaching a course. “Singapore is one of the best examples in showing that you can accommodate city development and population growth and also actually protect nature as well,” says Newman. Greenery is woven throughout the city, not only in many parks, but integrated even into the design of tall buildings.
“Singapore has now officially changed its motto from ‘Singapore, Garden City’ to ‘Singapore, a City in a Garden’,” says Beatley.
32.How is the second paragraph mainly developed?
A.By setting down general rules. B.By making a comparison.
C.By providing examples. D.By offering a definition.
33.What can we infer from Beatley’s words in paragraph 3?
A.Biophilic cities face as many problems as other cities.
B.Nature should not be optional but a must in cities.
C.Integrating nature into critics is not easy.
D.Nature in cities is in the form of parks.
34.What does Newman’s film mainly focus on?
A.How Singapore balances the economy and the environment.
B.Newman’s efforts to make Singapore more sustainable.
C.The rise of green tall buildings in Singapore.
D.Why Singapore builds so many tall buildings.
35.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Environment: as important as the economy B.Turning cities into gardens
C.Learning from biophilic cities D.Nature: a solution to climate change
