Michael Morpurgo, born in St Albans in 1943, is the author of many well-known books for children, five of which have been made into films. After a brief and unsuccessful period in the army, he took up teaching in 1967, when he found his true interest in writing. He left teaching after ten years in order to set up a charity “Farms for City Children” with his wife. He thought what children needed most were wonderful and memorable experiences that would help them find more about the world and themselves. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the plants and animals. He is also a father and grandfather. Children have always played a large part in his life. Morpurgo has a gift for magical storytelling. His most popular books include War Horse, which was runner-up for the Whitbread Children’s Book Award in 1982 and became an enormous success onstage and on screen; My Friend Walter, which was adapted for television. The Butterfly Lion draws on the author’s own unhappy experiences at boarding school. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2006 for services to literature.

Students at Summit Elementary in Butler, Pennsylvania, are growing more than their minds. Under the guidance of longtime teacher Angela Eyth, they’ve created a generous garden to benefit people in need at nearby Broad Street Elementary, whose neighborhood lacks fresh-produce options.
The project is now two years old, and goes beyond planting and growing: Eyth and her fellow educators structure lessons in science, math and more around their garden. “The kids are in charge of everything,” Eyth says. “They’re so proud of what we’re doing here.”
“When we grew cabbage my students noticed something was eating the leaves, ” Eyth recalls. “This led to an investigation into what was eating them and how to stop it: the kids analyzed the evidence they found and acted as engineers in creating various ways to keep pests(害虫) out of the cabbage beds.”
She continues, “People think gardening should be separate from core subjects but it’s far from the truth. The kids’ curiosity keeps it rolling.”
The kids also keep the produce rolling—so much so that with a $70,000 grant from Remake Learning/Grable Foundation, they’re building a farm stand at Broad Street Elementary that will ultimately bring fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and more to an area of their community considered a food desert. People will be able to go there and gain the benefits of the harvest.
This year’s crop included peas, beans, carrots, turnips, squash and pumpkins; plans are in place to keep expanding in the years ahead with items like Christmas trees, a sunflower patch and a pollinator garden. “It’s amazing that you start with a small idea and it can grow,” Eyth says.
24.What can we know about the community near Broad Street Elementary?
A.It focuses on students’ growth. B.It invites Eyth to create a garden.
C.Its fresh-produce variety is limited. D.It relies on students for fresh produce.
25.How do Eyth and her colleagues help the students?
A.By arranging subjects around the garden. B.By analyzing the structure of subjects.
C.By deciding what to plant in the garden. D.By providing them with job opportunities.
26.Why did the students conduct an investigation?
A.To experience the work of engineers. B.To make the evidence more convincing.
C.To find ways to plant vegetables well. D.To figure out what fed on cabbage leaves.
27.Which can best describe the students at Summit Elementary in Butler?
A.Energetic and healthy. B.Creative and responsible.
C.Patient and strong-willed. D.Cautious and talented.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.D 27.B

Don’t feel too bad if you’re the type to still be in bed past 11am on a Saturday. Yes, those up-at-6am types might look self-satisfied with their Instagram stories of sunrise yoga and morning museum trips, but it turns out that getting some extra rest at the weekend could be good for your mental well-being.
Having a lie-in could halve your risk of getting depression, suggests research from Yonsei University. But researchers waned -this benefits only apply if you sleep for an extra two hours. Any more than that and you actually increase your risk.
Researchers at the South Korean university came to this conclusion after tracking 5,500 people who said they often missed out on a full night’s sleep during the working week. They found that those who caught up on sleeping by having a lie-in of an extra two hours at the weekend were 48% less likely to develop depression. Those who had a one-hour lie-in reduced their risk of low mood by a third. But for people who slept for longer than two hours extra on Saturday and Sunday, depression rates were 16% higher.
These findings are backed up by a 2018 study from Sweden, which suggested that if y could bring up your average duration of sleep by staying in bed later at the weekends, you could be in better health. What’s even better than a lie-in at the weekend, though,is not needing one. If you can increase the duration and quality of your sleep during the week thus upping your overall average and reducing the need to sleep extra hours at the weekend, that’s likely to promise even more positive effects for your mental and physical well-being
It’s still recommended that you get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night so make that your aim rather than pretending a lie-in erases all the damage from late nights every other day.
28.What do the first 2 paragraphs mainly tell us?
A.The type of staying late in bed is commonly encouraged.
B.Yoga and museums trips are fashionable morning relaxation.
C.An extra 2 hours’ rest could be beneficial to your mental health.
D.Sleeping late for over 2 hours could cut the risk of depression in half
29.What can replace the underlined words “caught up on” in bold?
A.Ran after. B.Reached for.
C.Made up for. D.Was lacking in.
30.Why does the author use three figures in paragraph 3?
A.To introduce a topic. B.To support a conclusion.
C.To explain a phenomenon. D.To provide some examples.
31.What is viewed as healthy style according to the Sweden study?
A.Sleeping for more than nine hours per night...
B.Increasing average sleeping duration per night.
C.Staying late and sleep extra hours at the weekends
D.Sufficient sleep duration and quality during the weekdays.
根据第一段中“but it turns out that getting some extra rest at the weekend could he good for your mental well-being(但事实证明,在周末多休息一会儿对你的心理健康有好处。)”及第二段“But researchers warned -this benefits only apply if you sleep for an extra two hour. (但是研究人员发现,只有当你多睡两个小时的时候,这种益处才会显现出来。)”可知,前两段主要告诉我们了,额外的2小时休息可能对你的心理健康有益。故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Researchers at the South Korean university came to this conclusion after tracking 5,500 people who said they often missed out on a full night’s sleep during the working week(这所韩国大学的研究人员对5500人进行了跟踪调查,发现他们经常在工作日错过一整晚的睡眠时间,因此得出了这一结论)”和“They found that those who caught up on sleeping by having a lie-in of an extra two hours at the weekend were 48% less likely to develop depression(他们发现,那些通过周末多睡两个小时来caught up睡觉的人患抑郁症的可能性降低48%。)”中“an extra two hours”可知,在工作日错过睡眠时间,所以在周末多睡两个小时是为了补觉,由此推断出caught up on意思为“补上,弥补”,与C项“Made up for.(弥补)”意思一样,故选C。
第三段首句“Researchers at the South Korean university came to this conclusion after tracking 5,500 people who said they often missed out on a full night’s sleep during the working week(这所韩国大学的研究人员对5500人进行了跟踪调查,发现他们经常在工作日错过一整晚的睡眠时间,因此得出了这一结论)”指出对5500人进行了跟踪调查,得出了这样一个结论,即第二段“Having a lie-in could halve your risk of getting depression, suggests research from Yonsei University. But researchers waned -this benefits only apply if you sleep for an extra two hours. Any more than that and you actually increase your risk.(延世大学的研究表明,睡懒觉可以减少一半患抑郁症的风险。但是研究人员发现,只有当你多睡两个小时的时候,这种益处才会显现出来。超过这个数字,你实际上增加了你的风险。)”的结论,接着用数字48%和16%来论证这个结论,即那些通过周末多睡两个小时来补觉的人患抑郁症的可能性降低了48%。但是对于那些在周六和周日多睡两个小时以上的人来说,抑郁症的发病率要高出16%。由此可知,这些数字为了证明他们的结论,故选B。
31.细节理解题。根据第四段中“What’s even better than a lie-in at the weekend, though, is not needing one. If you can increase the duration and quality of your sleep during the week, thus upping your overall average and reducing the need to sleep extra hours at the weekend, that’s likely to promise even more positive effects for your mental and physical well-being.(然而,比周末睡懒觉更好的是不需要睡懒觉。如果你可以增加一周的睡眠时间和质量,从而提高你的整体平均水平,减少周末额外睡眠时间的需要,这可能会对你的身心健康产生更积极的影响)”可知,保证工作日有足够的睡眠时间和质量,这被视为健康的生活。故选D。
D
Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring performance through parental effects induced(感应的) by DNA.The offspring can also be influenced by environmental conditions experienced by their parents via soil legacy(遗产) effects due to changes in the composition of soil.
We conducted a two-phase experiment with five genotypes(基因型) of a clonal plant. In the first phase, we grew parent plants of each genotype under two light conditions and two DNA treatments. We then collected soils and clonal offspring for each genotype from each of these four treatments and measured soil properties. In the second phase, we grew the offspring from each of the four treatments in the four different soils, under the two light conditions.
When grown under environmental light condition and in soil from environmental parents, offspring produced by environmental parents grew larger than offspring produced by shaded parents when the parents were treated with water. This difference was smaller when the parents were treated with 5-7°C, and disappeared when the offspring were grown in soil from shaded parents. The growth difference was also observed when the offspring were grown under shaded condition and in soil from shaded parents. However, this difference was greater when the parents were treated with 5-7°C, and disappeared when the offspring were grown in soil from environmental parents.
Our results show that light condition experienced by parents can influence offspring responses to light through both parental effects and soil legacies. The parental effects were mediated(调节) by changes in DNA and the soil legacies. These impacts may eventually influence the ecological and evolutionary track of clonal plant populations.
32.What is the text mainly about?
A.Environmental conditions are important to offspring performance.
B.Offspring performance can be controlled by DNA and the soil legacies.
C.Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring.
D.Light condition experienced by parents can influence offspring responses to light.
33.How did the researchers get the result?
A.They carried out a survey.
B.They conducted an experiment.
C.They analyzed existing data.
D.They collected information from others.
34.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Growth difference only happens under environmental light condition.
B.Offspring of environmental parents grow smaller than offspring of shaded parents.
C.No growth difference appears when offspring are grown in soil from shaded parents.
D.Growth difference varies when parents are treated with 5-7°C under different conditions.
35.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary. B.A magazine. C.A novel. D.A notebook.
根据第一段“Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring performance through parental effects induced(感应的) by DNA. The offspring can also be influenced by environmental conditions experienced by their parents via soil legacy(遗产) effects due to changes in the composition of soil. (亲本植物所经历的环境条件可以通过DNA引起的亲本效应影响后代的表现。由于土壤成分的变化,后代也会受到父母所经历的环境条件的影响,通过土壤遗产效应。)”可知,文章主要介绍了植物后代会受到其父母所经历的环境条件的影响。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“We conducted a two-phase experiment with five genotypes(基因型) of a clonal plant. (我们对克隆植物的五种基因型进行了两阶段实验。)”可知,研究人员是通过做实验来得出结论的。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段“When grown under environmental light condition and in soil from environmental parents, offspring produced by environmental parents grew larger than offspring produced by shaded parents when the parents were treated with water. This difference was smaller when the parents were treated with 5-7°C. The growth difference was also observed when the offspring were grown under shaded condition and in soil from shaded parents. However, this difference was greater when the parents were treated with5-7°C, (当在环境光照条件下和在环境亲本土壤中生长时,环境亲本的后代比遮荫亲本在水处理下生长的后代大。当父母接受5-7°C的治疗时,这种差异较小。当后代在遮荫条件下和遮荫父母的土壤中生长时,也观察到了生长差异。然而,当父母接受5-7°C的治疗时,这种差异更大)”可知,在不同条件下父母接受5-7°C的治疗导致子辈差距变化是不一样的。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据第一段“Environmental conditions experienced by parent plants can influence offspring performance through parental effects induced(感应的) by DNA. The offspring can also be influenced by environmental conditions experienced by their parents via soil legacy(遗产) effects due to changes in the composition of soil. (亲本植物所经历的环境条件可以通过DNA引起的亲本效应影响后代的表现。由于土壤成分的变化,后代也会受到父母所经历的环境条件的影响,通过土壤遗产效应。)”可知,文章介绍了植物后代会受到其父母所经历的环境条件的影响,属于科普知识,最有可能出现在科普杂志上。故选B。

According to Jaime Roberts, good consulting is often about loosening the body, opening the mind and, more often than not, keeping the mouth shut.
Your body language matters
Jaime Roberts has been one of my go to experts for advice for decades. When I once asked her why she was so good at consulting, she was quick to mention her body language. “____36____,” she said, “Otherwise, they might not open up to me as much as I would want them to.”
You don’t have to fix the problem

You don’t need to give advice right now
Texts and FaceTime might be immediate, but your advice doesn’t have to be. ____38____. “Forcing yourself to give advice when you can’t will do more harm than good,” she said.
____39____
You’re bound to hear about problems you haven’t experienced firsthand. That’s why Jaime Roberts says you should let them know that you’re just human beings with limited experience. ____40____.
A.Don’t say their choices are wrong
B.You cannot give advice as giving someone an order

My cousin Isaiah and I went fishing on the lake. Midweek, no one was around here. The nearby protected wetlands ran along the shore. Songbirds, ducks, and Canada geese slid by on the breeze, touching down briefly on the water’s surface before flapping (拍打)and quacking their way back up into the sky.
Standing at the lake’s edge, I cast my fishing line onto the smooth-as-glass water. Down the shoreline was Isaiah, who liked to fish alone, away from noise and other people.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons (潜鸟) crowded together not far from the shoreline. Loons usually travel alone, but here were five of them in a group. One loon, making painful sounds, swam away from the group, toward me. It seemed like it was trying to get my attention.
”Isaiah! Come here!” Isaiah pressed his finger against his lips, pointed to where he had cast his line, and shook his head gently.
“Just get over here. Now!” I yelled.
He laid his fishing pole down and dragged his feet, moving toward me at a snail’s pace.
“Come here!” I yelled again. “Take a look at that loon. It keeps getting closer and closer!”
On hearing this, Isaiah fastened his pace.
The loon stopped in the shallow water near shore, not ten feet away from us. It was so close that we could see its red eyes. Oddly, the bird’s wings were held tight against its spotted black-and-white body. Though scared of its sharp beak (喙), we stepped into the water cautiously. As we approached the loon, we both saw something around its neck. Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red-hook deeply stuck in its body, and fishing line was wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t fly or fish or survive. It was asking us to help!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
Isaiah rushed to grab the scissors from the toolbox and came back.

While turning back to the spot, he shouted and asked me to grab the poor loon. Realizing the fact that he wanted to help free the loon from the deadly fishing line and hook, I did as he required. Upon arrival, he knelt down and cut the fishing line first, carefully but quickly, in case the scissor hurt the loon. Then, he unfolded the red-hook that stuck in its body.At the moment, the loon sounded pleasantly.(76)
The poor creature flapped its wings happily, quacking its way in the lake. Then, it swam toward us again. Using its head, it touched our hands, seemingly saying that we were to be thanked. We felt greatly moved and excited. We clearly knew that what we had done to the creature was what we should do in our daily life. We are all masters of our environment, just like living things. We should live in peace with them. (78)
