W: You can’t be serious! There has to be something different.
M: The only difference is the title, otherwise I wouldn’t have gone to the cinema.
W: I thought you were a fan of the director. Is it because you expect too much of him?
M: Probably. The special effects of Avatar 1 are so wonderful that I say “wow” every time I watch it. But this time, I didn’t feel the excitement I had expected.

M: What about the race? Did you complete the whole course?
W: I ran a half marathon-about 13 miles altogether. It took me about 2 hours.
M: Oh, I couldn’t even picture myself running that long, especially in such hot windless days.
W: The race started at 8 o’clock, and luckily there were enough clouds the whole morning.
M: Did you carry any supplies with you?
W: No, the volunteers would provide us with enough supplies along the path. It wasn’t as tough as you think. Would you like to join me next year?
M: Er, I think I can help distribute the supplies and cheer for the athletes.
    W: That’s a great idea.

W:I’m Katie Hainer, host of a new weekly radio program called Lost Women of Science coming next November. Through history women have made hundreds of scientific breakthroughs. They have a sixth sense that enables them to pick out more important clues. But many of these female scientists are missing from public view. The more I do this research, the more I realize that women are at the heart of some of the most important developments in science. For example, Rosalind Franklin contributed much to the discovery of the structure of DNA. And the work of Margaret Wilcox, an American engineer, was crucial to the development of the air conditioner in cars. Each season, we’ll explore and celebrate the life and work of one woman who shaped our world view. And we’ll explore some of the reasons why you might not know her name. We’ll be looking at the barriers these women faced, as well as their passion and drive. Join us as we honor these remarkable stories you may not know.

I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub(残余部分)in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug(大杯),tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay(腐败),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
24.Why did the author soak the stub in water?
A.To hope that it would grow. B.To decorate the nice mug.
C.To conduct an experiment. D.To remove his bad mood.
25.What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A.The remaining stub. B.The small leaf.
C.The disappearing cuts. D.The tiny root threads.
26.How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
    A.Hesitant. B.Fearless. C.Aimless. D.Annoyed
27.What can we learn from Monty?
A.Enjoying your own life to the fullest.
B.Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C.Never being afraid to restart yourself.
D.Giving freedom to the heart in a way.
    【答案】24.A 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub(残余部分)in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water(我在厨房里切生菜时,突然想起看了一段视频,讲的是把生菜茎浸泡在水中能长出一种全新的蔬菜。于是我拿出一个大嘴巴的马克杯,把生菜茎放进去,给它一点水)”可知,作者把生菜泡在水中的原因是希望能看到它生长,故选A项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out.(在一个下雪的早晨,我注意到了第一个迹象。它的茎心里开出了第一片小叶)”可知在作者看来,第一个生命的迹象是开使长出的第一片小叶,故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth.( 如果我是一棵处于类似状况的生菜,我会怀疑地评估自己在完全生长之前的状况)”可知,如果作者处于生菜的状况之下,作者会犹豫不决,故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.( 重新开始的前景令人沮丧。但我的生菜朋友蒙蒂在前面带路,我只能希望自己也能如此勇敢)”可知,我们从蒙蒂可以学到要勇敢,不要惧怕重新开始, 故选C项。

    C
Instead of throwing the pits (核) or nuts after eating fruits like many people, inheritors of nut carving will collect them and turn them into artworks.
“One nut, ranging from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be shaped into delicate earrings, buttons, seals, etc,” said Tan Wanhai, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving.
Weifang nut carving can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty, during which a retired royal craftsman Wang Dayan spread the skill to the locals in Shandong. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits to display their artistic skills. Due to the demanding carving skills and its rich artistic content including many different elements, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage as early as 2008.
Tan has studied the nut carving over 25 years and has created many nut carvings along the way. Yet, the 48-year-old craftsman also admitted that the journey of bringing this kind of masterpiece to life is not all smooth sailing. “Unlike some pits like olive pits whose surfaces are flat, each peach pit has a unique texture like fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that craftsmen should have the capability to trace each peach pit carefully to plan their artwork besides the carving technique itself.
Also, craftsmen need to have a wide foundation of knowledge when it comes to carving nuts. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures. Sometimes, to depict classic folktales or legends in their artworks better, they need to read many books to prepare themselves.
It is this kind of dedication that Tan and others possess that allows Weifang nut carving to thrive when many traditional skills are gradually disappearing. “In recent years, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China for their inventive layout and novel ideas,” Tan said. This popularity, in turn, has also attracted many people to learn the skill of nut carving and even become inheritors to pass it down.
28.What can we know about Weifang nut carving?
A.It dates back to the Ming Dynasty.
B.It can transform a nut into different designs.
C.It was invented by a retired royal craftsman.
D.It was first nationally recognized 25 years ago.
29.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “depict” in paragraph 5?
    A.Tell. B.Understand. C.Review. D.Create.
30.What are paragraph 4 and paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The cultural significance of nut carving.
B.The reasons why nut carvings are valuable.
C.The skills required for nut carving craftsmen.
D.The difficulties craftsmen have when creating nut carvings.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Seeds of Art and Beauty B.Art Originating from Life
C.History of Nut Carving D.Devoted Contemporary Inheritors
    【答案】28.B 29.A 30.C 31.A
根据第二段““One nut, ranging from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be shaped into delicate earrings, buttons, seals, etc,” said Tan Wanhai, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving.(潍坊核雕传承人谭万海表示:“一颗核,直径从0.8厘米到6厘米不等,可以塑造成精致的耳环、纽扣、印章等。”)”
根据画线词后文“classic folktales or legends in their artworks better, they need to read many books to prepare themselves”可知,工匠需要阅读很多书籍来准备自己,才能更好地讲述经典的民间故事或传说,故画线词意思是“讲述”。故选A。
根据第四段““Unlike some pits like olive pits whose surfaces are flat, each peach pit has a unique texture like fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that craftsmen should have the capability to trace each peach pit carefully to plan their artwork besides the carving technique itself.( “不像橄榄核表面是平的,每个核都有独特的纹理,就像指纹一样,”谭说,他补充说,除了雕刻技术本身,工匠还应该有能力仔细描摹每个核,以规划他们的艺术品)”以及第五段“Also, craftsmen need to have a wide foundation of knowledge when it comes to carving nuts. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures. Sometimes, to depict classic folktales or legends in their artworks better, they need to read many books to prepare themselves.(此外,工匠在雕刻核时需要有广泛的知识基础。谭说,他们必须掌握来自许多传统文化的绘画、篆刻和书法技能。有时候,为了在他们的作品中更好地描绘经典的民间故事或传说,他们需要阅读很多书籍来准备自己)”可知,第4段和第5段主要讲的是坚果雕刻工匠所需要的技能。故选C。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Instead of throwing the pits or nuts after eating fruits like many people, inheritors of nut carving will collect them and turn them into artworks.(与许多人吃完水果后扔掉果核不同,坚果雕刻的传承者会把它们收集起来,变成艺术品)”结合文章主要介绍了潍坊核雕技艺,介绍了核雕的历史以及其传承人谭万海对这门艺术的诠释。 故选A。

ChatGPT is a new AI system that sounds so human in conversations that it could host its own radio programs. Reading between its instantly generated, perfectly grammatical lines, people see different visions of the future. Without doubt, ChatGPT is impressive.
Some compare the emergence of ChatGPT to the impact of the iPhone, but that doesn’t do it justice. ChatGPT, as well as the generative AI that will follow and outsmart it, is more disruptive. And yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world is upon us. On the contrary, ChatGPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.
Take the creative act, writing in particular, as an example. If you want it to, the AI-powered chatbot always produces something because it has the whole world of online data to draw from. But unlike us, it lacks the consciousness. Thinking is hard, critical thinking even harder, and ChatGPT isn’t good at either. It just restates what has already been said; it is one big recycling machine.
There is another obvious limitation of ChatGPT. Philosopher Harry Frankfurt once claimed: the difference between a bullshitter (胡说八道的人) and a liar is that the liar knows what the truth is but decides to take the opposite direction; a bullshitter, however, has no regard for the truth at all. The AI scholar Gary Marcus applies this distinction to ChatGPT. He believes that we have reached a critical point when “the price of bullshit reaches zero and people who want to spread misinformation, either politically or just to make a profit, start doing that plentifully”. Unfortunately, ChatGPT will reproduce misinformation from any of its input sources — it is not an intelligent system that tries to balance or weight different perspectives. In this sense, everything that ChatGPT writes is bullshit.
This is why the so-called AIQ is critical. It is actually an extension and a measurement of our human IQ: our overall knowledge of AI tools, our mastery of clues, and our ethical awareness. ChatGPT is going to change everything and nothing. Creativity, imagination and ethics — these will all remain unique human domains. It is the AI’s very limitations that will make us appreciate our own.
32.What can we learn about ChatGPT?
A.It helps generate an artificial voice.
B.It provides instructions on writing skills.
    C.It generates natural language responses.
D.It offers a service for language learning.
33.What does the underlined word “disruptive” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Evil.
    B.Reliable.
    C.Profitable.
    D.Revolutionary.
34.Why does the author consider ChatGPT as a bullshit generator?
    A.It makes up lies constantly.
B.It can’t tell right from wrong.
    C.It often makes unfair judgement.
D.It always takes a neutral standpoint.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A.ChatGPT Makes Us Human
    B.ChatGPT Is Causing Panic Now
C.ChatGPT: Treat It Like a Toy, Not a Tool
D.ChatGPT:Why It Is Bound to Generate Bullshit
    【答案】32.C 33.D 34.B 35.A
根据第一段中“ChatGPT is a new AI system that sounds so human in conversations that it could host its own radio programs.(hatGPT是一种新的人工智能系统,它在对话中听起来非常像人类,它甚至可以主持自己的广播节目)”可知,ChatGPT可以与人聊天,进行非常自然的语言应答。故选C项。
根据第二段中“Some compare the emergence of ChatGPT to the impact of the iPhone, but that doesn’t do it justice.(有些人将ChatGPT的出现与iPhone的影响相提并论,但这并不公平)”可知,对于有人将ChatGPT与iPhone相提并论,作者并不赞同。
根据第四段中“Unfortunately, ChatGPT will reproduce misinformation from any of its input sources — it is not an intelligent system that tries to balance or weight different perspectives. In this sense, everything that ChatGPT writes is bullshit.(不幸的是,ChatGPT会从任何输入源中复制错误信息——它不是一个试图平衡或权衡不同观点的智能系统。从这个意义上说,ChatGPT所写的一切都是胡扯)”可知,ChatGPT只是复制信息,不能辨别信息的真伪,所以作者认为它是一个胡扯生成器。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第二段中“And yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world is upon us. On the contrary, ChatGPT, I would argue, might serve to make us more aware of our irreplaceable human qualities.(然而,这并不一定意味着世界末日就要来了。相反,我认为ChatGPT可能会让我们更多地意识到我们不可替代的人类品质)”和最后一段中“ChatGPT is going to change everything and nothing. Creativity, imagination and ethics — these will all remain unique human domains. It is the AI’s very limitations that will make us appreciate our own.(ChatGPT会改变一切,也不会改变什么。 故选A项。

Standing at the Police Outpost Lake’s edge, I was fishing with Isaiah, my cousin, our fishing tackle box nearby on the shore. Actually, I’d learned to fish from my dad. He’d taught more to fish alone, in silence, lost in my own thoughts. Like meditation. He’d taught me everything I knew about fishing. Then, he passed away.
“Jacob, where should I stand?“ asked Isaiah.
“Be quiet or else we won’t catch any fish,” I whispered.
    Isaiah frowned,pouting(撅嘴),but it was"message received.”
”Why do I have to be so quiet? "asked quietly Isaiah. “All those birds are making way more noise than I ever could!”
I ignored him. Pulling back on my rod, squinting into the glare of the sun. Out of the corner of my eye,I caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons(潜鸟) gathering together not far from the shoreline. My mind traveled back to the past. My dad had been a fish and wildlife officer. He loved his job, especially the part where he protected nature from humans. When he returned, we sat on the couch together, and he amused me with stories of life on the road. He once mentioned the loon could easily stab(刺) people to death with its beak!
Suddenly, Isaiah’s voice brought me back, “Look, something was coming.” Following the direction, he was pointing, I saw a loon, wailing and making sounds, swam away from the group, toward us.
Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw thin wire wrapped around its neck and blood spots by its wing. Fishing line maybe? Was it the hook(钩)on the line that made it bleed? Was the loon asking us for help?
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Afraid, I held it out at arm’s length, and Isaiah cut away the fishing line using the scissors.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    __________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
    Para1:
Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red hook embedded in its body, and the fishing line was wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t survive. It was asking us to help! But if freed, would it stab us to death with its beak? I hesitated. Somehow I felt my dad’s presence, “Jacob, the bird won’t hurt you. It needs your help. Be brave!” Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes for a second to calm myself. “Isaiah, go grab the scissors from the fishing tackle box.” I said firmly. Soon he came back with the tiny pair of scissors and I bent down to pick up the loon.
    Para2:
Afraid, I held it out at arm’s length, and Isaiah cut away the fishing line using the scissors. Luckily, the loon was silent and things went well. “Now take out the hook, Isaiah. Hurry! ” “All right! I will.” Isaiah bit on his lower lip. Slowly, his slim fingers worked to loosen the hook and pulled it out. Finally, the loon was freed. Isaiah and I breathed a sigh of relief. As I set it down on the water, it slapped its wings down slightly on the surface of the lake, seeming to be saying, “Thank you, boys.” Big smiles formed on our faces with a sense of accomplishment filled with our heart. I decided to protect wildlife like my father and felt it our duty to protect nature.
    (1)犹豫:hesitate/without hesitation
