Sometimes shipwrecks(沉船)contain sunken treasure, loads of gold or jewelry. Other shipwrecks are themselves the treasure—the stories of their ill-fated voyages creating a legend that makes them sparkle far more than any gold or precious stones.

The wreck of HMS Endurance, which has finally been located deep beneath the icy seas of Antarctica after being lost 107 years ago, was arguably the most valuable shipwreck ever sought. That’s because its discovery adds another thrilling new chapter to an already fascinating tale of perseverance and survival that has echoed down the decades and still inspires today.

Incredibly well preserved at a depth of almost two miles, the ship is little changed from the day in November 1914 when it finally sank beneath the ice. Endurance became embedded in ice while crossing Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. The video shot by underwater search vehicles shows painted timbers, an undamaged guardrail(护栏)and the name “Endurance” written above the five-pointed symbol of a polar star.

“I tell you, you would have to be made of stone not to feel a bit soft at the sight of that star and the name above,” Mensun Bound, the mission’s marine archaeologist, told the BBC “You can see a porthole(舷窗)that is in Shackleton’s cabin. At that moment, you really do feel the breath of the great man upon the back of your neck.” Shackleton’s leadership was crucial to getting his men out alive. The reason why Shackleton is still applauded as a great man becomes obvious when you consider what he achieved in the face of disasters and hardships during his 1914-16 expedition. The practicality and humanity he showed in the face of severe situations was arguably praised.

21What makes Endurance the most valuable shipwreck?

AThe treasure aboard. BIts inspiring stories.

CIts undamaged guardrail. DThe symbol of a polar star.

22What can we infer from Mensun Bound’s words?

AThe floating ice is as hard as stones.

    BThe well-preserved shipwreck is amazing.

CThe heroic deeds of Shackleton are touching.

DThe discovery of Endurance is challenging.

23What is the text type of the passage?

AA book review. BA news report.

    CA biography. DA travel journal.

English is the international language of science, but most of the world's scientists speak it as a second language. We shoulder an extra career challenge: Not only must we gain a command of science, but we must also be able to write in a foreign language to communicate that science.

My mother tongue is Hebrew. Fm now a researcher at Monash University. There are six people on my research team, five of whom are non-native English speakers. Writing highly technical English is crucial to our science. Our topics embrace cell biology, materials science and chemistry, so our writings must make sense to both non-experts and experts.

To be frank, English is suitable as an international language in a number of ways. On the surface, it’s easy enough to convey basic meanings when conducting trade, business and tourism, as well as on social media. In most contexts, it doesn't matter if you misuse “the” or "-ing,” or get the word order wrong. Although the spelling is chaotic, once you get a feel for the typical patterns, it’s not too hard.

However, when meanings are complex and technical, precision is a must. Then, English becomes a difficult beast to wrestle with.

The Australian poet Clive James once called English“big and baggy." I can't disagree. The vocabulary is large. Furthermore, the grammar is extraordinarily flexible, leaving us often confusing. There lies the problem: Such rich language makes it easy to produce long writings of questionable quality.

Worse still, we outsiders ta English are likely to have been taught to use complicated wording and long sentences to show our authority on a topic. However, English is the opposite: The language is at its most elegant when plain and simple. But simplicity is hard in English!

Another shock to me was the importance English speakers place on front-ending their messages. In many languages, you might expect readers to stay with the text throughout. In English, however, I’ve developed healthy fear that my readers will skim-read unless I state the essence at the opening of a paragraph, then walk backwards while explaining it.

24Why is English suitable as an international language?

AIt can be easily used to get basic meanings across.

BIt has relatively simple grammar and spelling rules.

CIt is spoken by the majority of the world’s population.

DIts huge vocabulary helps express complex meanings.

25The challenge scientists have as non-native speakers is ___________.

Ahow to convey complex and technical meanings precisely in English

Bhow to produce professional writings in complicated English

Chow to establish their authority in the field of science in English writing.

Dhow to make scientific writings in English accessible to authorities.

26What does the underlined phrase “front-ending their messages” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

Askimming for the main idea of the text

Bexpressing ideas at the end of the text

Cpresenting key messages at the beginning

Dhaving a thorough understanding of the text

    C

A new large-scale study that skipping dinner could result in weight gain and a higher likelihood of being overweight or obese.

For years, research has linked skipping breakfast with increased BMI (body mass index), but few studies have been carried out into the effect of the other meals of the day. However, researchers at Osaka University, whose study assessed breakfast, lunch, and diner habits, concluded that not eating diner is a “significant predictor of weight gain and overweight/obesity.”

The study followed 17,573 male and 8,860 female students over the age of 18 enrolled at Osaka University over an average of three years. As part of their annual check-ups, the students were asked how often they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Researchers also took into consideration the time of eating, whether participants’ meal habits changed over the course of the study, and lifestyle factors like sleep, smoking, and drinking.

The number of students who said they sometimes skipped dinner was small, but the researchers found that those who did so all the time or occasionally were more likely to be older, more overweight, a smoker or drinker, to sleep for a shorter period of time, skip other meals more frequently, and eat dinner later when they did eat it.

For both men and women, skipping lunch was more likely to coincide with all the same outcomes except having a higher BMI. Skipping dinner, the researchers found, was”significantly associated” with weight gain of 10% or more, and having a BMI over 25, which is classed as overweight or obese.

It’s worth pointing out that BMI has its limitations — someone who is incredibly muscular and lean can be classed as obese, for example, but when assessing a large population it’s generally considered accurate enough as the outliers outweigh each other, “These results suggest that skipping dinner, which was much less common than skipping breakfast, has a stronger association with weight gain and overweight/obesity than skipping breakfast,” the study said.

The researchers suggested that the reason skipping dinner could lead to weight gain is that it makes people hungrier so they end up eating more over the course of the day. Another possible explanation, they said, is that dinner is typically a meal that lends itself to nutritious foods like lean proteins and vegetables, so skipping dinner may mean a lower quality diet.

The researchers note that their study had limitations: It should be repeated to assess a wider population, and they also didn’t take into account factors like exercise, stress, or depression.

27What can be inferred about the research?

AMany studies have associated skipping dinner with overweight.

BDinner is a significant predictor of weight gain and obesity.

CAnyone with a BMI over 25 is obese.

DFew students at Osaka University skipped dinner

28What do the researchers mean in the last three paragraphs?

AThe result is scientific and accurate.

BSkipping dinner may lead to overeating.

CDinner is more important than breakfast.

DNutritious dinner means a lower quality diet.

29What is the purpose of the text?

    APresent a science report.

    BAdvocate a healthy diet.

    CRecommend approaches to fighting obesity.

DStress the importance of nutritious dinner.

30Which of the following is the best title for the text?

ASkipping dinner might be making you gain weight

BNutritious dinner means a high quality diet

CStudents skipping dinner tend to develop unhealthy habits

DPeople with increased IBM tend to skip dinner

If you’re a teenager, you are in a very powerful position. Starting good money habits now will put you ahead for the rest of your life. Here are money tips for you.

    Understand the power of time.

You probably aren’t making a ton of money right now, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is time. ____31____ Let’s look at an example: At the end of your summer job, you have $1000. You invest it at a rate of return of 5%. At the end of those 50 years, you will have $11,467.49.

    Start a money saving habit.

If you start the habit of saving money now, that habit will always be with you. Every dollar you get, whether it’s a gift, an allowance, or pay from a job, get into the habit of saving a portion of it. Half of it would be ideal. ____32____ The older you get, the harder it can seem to save even 10% of your money.

    ____33____

There is so much information available on the internet You can find articles that will teach you how to make $100 fast. There are also so many personal finance books to choose from to know where to start. You can talk to your parents about money, too.

    Avoid FOMO.

FOMO is fear of missing out. ____34____ It’s important, though, to not give up what you want most for what you want now. What you want now is to take the money you made at your summer job and go on Spring Break. What you want most is to graduate debt free. Or to be able to quit a job you hate because you have a big emergency fund to see you through to your next job. It might not seem like it when you’re eighteen. ____35____

    AAsk for advice.

    BGet Educated.

CAnd your money has a lot of it.

DBut all of that will be true in time.

ECash tends to burn a hole in our pockets.

FIt’s time to start now because you don’t have many expenses.

GYou’ll think everyone is having more fun than you as a teenager.

In the far away land, there was a beautiful kingdom with its unique rule. The rule said, everyone may become the king, with all of his rights to govern the country for five years. After that he must be caught, his body will be tied and he will be thrown away to a remote island where the jungle is thick and there are plenty of wild animals and no human.

Then, one by one, people became the king. The first man said, ‘‘Ok, I'm ready to be the king." And he became a king for five years. What he did in his five years was enjoying his position. He threw big parties, went to many beautiful places, married many women, collected many luxurious things and did other things that pleased himself Those were all he did and he never prepared anything for his future. Until one day the time came. One morning when the king woke up, suddenly strong soldiers came to his palace and said, " We came here under the order of constitution. Now it's time for you to be thrown away to the remote island." The king wasn't surprised but he felt that time passed by too fast. He had enjoyed himself in the past five years but now he had to accept his destiny with tears in his eyes. The soldiers sent him to the dangerous island and left. All they heard was the voices of the wild animals and the long scream of the former king; and then silent again.

Every other king was the same until a young man came and declare his wish. By the constitution he was granted his wish. He would be a hug for five years before being thrown away to the island. But if other kings would follow their passion for having fun, he didn't. The king was always seen to be thinking.
