ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot (聊天机器人) tool, has bee very popular all over the world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework assignment (任务).
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes (食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assignments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread inaccurate (不准确的) information.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all schools say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting policies (起草规章制度) on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor (副校长) for education at the University Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software (人工智能软件) like ChatGPT are wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told the school newspaper the university. What we need to do is “change our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can have integrity (诚信) while recognizing (认可) the use of the tool”.

When I was a boy, we had a tiny (微小的) television set. It only had one channel. Still, I would always be in my chair when cartoons came on.
The one I liked best was The Jetsons (《杰森一家》). It was a cartoon series that was set in a future and it was full of fantastic machines that could do anything. I always smiled when I watched it and dreamed of a day when I would have machines like this to do all my work, so I could just sit back and relax.
Now my life is full of machines like these. But if anything, I seem to have more to do than ever. Just today I had to spend most of the morning downloading (下载) a new version (版本) of my word processing program (文字处理程序) so I could write this article. When I first started out, I wrote my stories on lined notebook paper and it took half the time. Last week, I spent most of another morning trying to get my new coffee maker (咖啡机) to work right. I seem to be drowning (溺死) in a sea of new rules and problems that come with new technology.
Now don’t get me wrong. Computers and machines have done a lot to help all of us. I just want us to be able to use them without them using us. We always seem to be busy because we’re spending all of our time using these machines.
I hope that in the future, machines can be more user-friendly (方便使用的) so we don’t spend all our time on them. With machines we can live an easier life, but they can never replace time spent with family and friends.
9.Why did the writer mention his childhood cartoon?
A.To remember his happiest time.
B.To introduce his favourite cartoon.
C.To tell his dream life with machines.

A.Machines cost people lots of money.
B.Machines are helpful but take people too much time.
C.Machines are useless and stupid.
D.Machines won’t be used by people one day.
12.What does the writer suggest?
A.Machines should be made more user-friendly.
B.We should spend more time on machines.
C.We should live with family gather than machines.
D.More machines should be created for an easier life.
What does it mean to be green? Green is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. Buying a green product is a small step everyone can take. Deciding whether a product is green, however, isn’t always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product, even after it’s of no use. Here is what we may keep in mind.
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. What is it made of? Are there any harmful chemicals in it? Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.
Packing is important. How is a product packed? Is it over-packed? We’d better choose glass, metal and paper packing, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packing or even choose unbagged products whenever possible.
Location matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? Think about how much energy was used to get it to us. Try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmers, shop at markets and buy fruits in season. Buying from stores near our houses is also a good choice, because we can go there without driving a car.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural”, but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible.
The greenest thing is certainly the one we don’t buy. Things like food and clothing are necessary for life. But many others are not. Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store and doing without. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces waste and keeps the planet healthy.
13.What do we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Green is just a kind of color.
B.Green also means taking actions to protect the environment.
C.Deciding if a product is green is easy.
D.It is a big step to buy a green product.
14.What is talked about in Paragraph 2?
A.Why we first focus materials of a product.
B.What green products are made of.
C.How a product is packed.
D.Where a product is produced.
15.We’d better choose this kind of packing except _______.
A.glass B.metal C.paper D.plastic
16.According to the writer, we should choose a product that is ______.
A.made of unnatural materials B.produced abroad
C.locally produced D.over packed
17.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Reducing Energy Use. B.Keeping Healthy. C.Recycling Waste. D.Buying Green.

Robots are helpful in many ways. They can help us wash dishes, cook, and clean rooms. Some of them can even help look after old people. Now they’re turning their attention to fighting climate change by helping to plant trees.
Milrem Robotics, an Estonian company, together with some scientists, has developed two robots that can plant young trees. The two robots are the size of a small car. They can work as a team—one prepares the planting area, the other plants trees.
Both robots are driverless. They sense the environment around them and operate(操作)on their own. They can travel at speeds of up to 20 km/h. In five or six hours, the pair can put down as many as 380 young trees covering ten thousand square meters. It means the two robots can plant thousands of trees a day! While working, they can also record the location of each new tree.
The world loses about 100 thousand square kilometers of trees every year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization(联合国粮食及农业组织). Scientists say that we need to plant a trillion(万亿)trees to solve the problem of forest cover loss and help slow down climate change. Besides, it’s more important to plant the right trees in the right place to get a satisfying result.
It is great news that two tree-loving robots can help solve the big world problem.

CODA, a simple yet powerful (有力量的) film, won best picture at this year’s Oscars ceremony. Held on March 27 in Los Angeles, it’s always one of film industry’s biggest nights. CODA is a remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Belier (《贝利叶一家》). It’s about a deaf family. Set in a small town in the United States, 17-year-old girl Ruby is the only hearing person in her family. She is called a CODA, short for “child of deaf adults”. Ruby faces a problem. She wants to be a musician, but as the only translator for her family, she worries that following her dream will influence her family.
It’s a simple and sincere film. The deaf characters are performed by real-life deaf actors, said the Fiction Horizon website. Most movies traditionally would have non-deaf actors in such roles. Indeed, in La Famille Belier, both parents were played by hearing actors.

You may have known about many traditional Chinese festivals such as Spring Festival or Lantern Festival, but have you ever heard of Dragon Heads-raising Day?
Dragon Heads-raising Day is also called Spring Dragon Festival. It is on the second day of the second lunar(农历) month. It’s on February 21st this year. It came from an old story. After that day, the Dragon King will wake up from his winter sleep and bring more rain. So that day is the start of spring and farming season.
One of the most interesting things related to the day is about haircut. People believe that a haircut during the first lunar month is not a good idea. It may bring bad things to your uncles. So people can only cut it on or after Dragon Heads-raising Day. Although it’s not true, many people still do it.
There are also other ways to celebrate this festival. For example, people eat food with dragon names. People call noodles dragon’s beard(胡须) . Dumplings are dragon’s ears and spring rolls(春卷) are dragon’s scales(鳞) .
People also do dragon dances and make dragon lanterns. The lanterns stand for people’s best wishes and good luck.

High on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau lies China’s “water tower” Sanjiangyuan — the source of three important rivers: the Yellow River, Yangtze River, and Lancang River. The three rivers provide water for about 50 percent of people in China. However, during the mid-20th century, the area of snow, grasslands and lakes in Sanjiangyuan were becoming smaller because of climate change and human activities. Many wild animals living in the area were facing extinction.
On Jan 24, 2003, China set up Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve to better protect the area and the wildlife there. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the setup of the reserve. The government is continuing to improve the environmental protection management system. That is why Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve has become part of Sanjiangyuan National Park, standing for the strictest protection measures.
Local people have improved their understanding about environmental protection and have tried hard to look after the environment in Sanjiangyuan over the years. In Nangqen County, most people live on selling caterpillar fungus they’ve found in grasslands. They used to carry food with them in plastic bags and left the bags behind. But now, local people are regularly called on to pick up waste on the grasslands. People also take their food waste down the mountains. The grasslands have put on a new look.
Social organizations have also worked hard to protect Sanjingyuan. They are working on nature education. By taking teenagers to mountains and lakes, the organizations are trying their best to encourage young people to take part in their environmental protection activities.
Thanks to these efforts, Sanjiangyuan is changing for the better. In these years, the population of wild animals has been rising. According to Xinhua, more than 70,000 Tibetan antelopes now live there. And more than 1,000 snow leopards can be found in the area. It is now green, lively and peaceful.
But Sanjiangyuan is still facing some difficulties. The biggest challenge now is the possible reduction of grasslands and melting frozen soil caused by global warming. So it is hoped that more people can join in the environmental protection of Sanjiangyuan and keeps improving its environment.

It’s OK to say you’ve never heard of grime(伦敦地下音乐)—unless you’re from the UK. That’s because this music type was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.
To someone who doesn’t know much about underground music culture, it’s not easy to tell the difference between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t even want to know it, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and Hus led this year’s Mobo—“music of black origin”, an award in the UK. Just like UK electronic music and hip-hop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly shows the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects(方言) with strong accents, giving a special taste to their songs.
Lady Leshurr, known as the “Grime Queen”, said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want to be laughed at. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the soul(灵魂) of grime music: be yourself.
Grime has challenged modern music in its expressions. It is also different from the hip-hop culture, which is mainly about being rich. Grime singers pay more attention to what happens in society like those who are badly influenced by disasters and the gap between the rich and the poor.
Although still quite a young music type, grime seems to be getting loved by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead.
However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted widely or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.

People are encouraged to recycle. Recycling helps cut back the need to use the planet’s natural resources. It reduces the waste in rubbish dumps (垃圾场) and saves the energy it would take to make more new products. But some people say there’s a better way for people to protect the planet by reducing. It means using and buying less, so there’s less to throw away later. Others argue that reducing shouldn’t take away from efforts to recycle. What do you think? Is reducing more important than recycling?
Yes-reducing is best for the planet
Many people might be shocked to learn that in the UK, only two thirds of packaging waste that is put into recycling bins is recycled. Many recyclable things get put in the wrong bin, polluting everything so it all ends up in rubbish dumps instead. Also, lots of plastic waste is sent to other countries, where it is sometimes illegally(非法地) dumped. We need to recycle better—but more important is reducing the waste we make. Reducing can be fun, by exchanging things with friends. This costs nothing but goes a long way towards protecting our planet.
No-it’s very important to recycle
Now, recycling succeeds in keeping around 46% of the UK’s household waste out of dumps, so we should be supporting people to recycle even more. Everyone wants to relax after working or studying for a long time. I have many ways of relaxing myself. Let me tell you some of my favorites.
I am a big sports fan, so the usual way I relax is to watch or play many kinds of sports. My favorite is tennis, but I am interested in all kinds of sports. When I am playing tennis or watching a game on TV, it is exciting to see team members doing their best. It’s amazing to see players playing very well. It’s true that playing sports is not physically(身体上地)“relaxing”, but I find it really cool and a good way of “relaxing” my brain after a day’s hard work.
I enjoy listening to music, and I always have some music playing during my free time. I listen to all types, but I enjoy listening to beautiful piano music most. Some people can’t study while listening to music, but for me, I believe I can study better by listening to light songs.
Some people choose to relax by traveling. I don’t have a favorite place, but I hear that traveling in Japan is really enjoyable. I like visiting different kinds of places and eating famous snacks there. I also enjoy sightseeing and seeing how the culture and people change from place to place.

A young boy received an unexpected message in the mail from his father Joseph, who died two years ago.
Rowan’s dad was a hard-working man who wanted to give his son the best life he could. It was why Rowan’s mother, Julie Van Stone, said Joseph joined the Navy and went to MIT to get two Master’s degrees.
While at school in Boston. he would often write to Rowan. Even when he left school and was driving back to Colorado, he would send postcards from each state he stopped in. Those postcards were sent in 2007. “I remember him saying he had sent 5 or 6, but Rowan had only got 3 or 4 in the mail. But I never thought anything of it,” Van Stone said.
Those postcards and pictures are priceless memories for Van Stone and her son, especially after Joseph passed away from a rare brain disease. Rowan never had a chance to say goodbye. But, on Saturday, just days before the two-year anniversary of Joseph’s death, a postcard arrived in the mail. It arrived on March 11, 2015. The message read: “Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much. See you soon. Love, Daddy.”
Neither he nor his mother knows how it happened, and they may never know. But they have their own ideas. “I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn’t get to say,” Van Stone said. Van Stone says Joseph’s last words to her before he died were: “Everything is a circle. We will see one another again. All that matters is love.”
